On this episode we're talking about Mr. Big Stuff, The Heavster, The Overweight Lover, out of Moneyearnin' Mount Vernon, the diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly D. One of a small number of people who have done a song with both Michael and Janet Jackson. The man who is pretty much responsible for kicking off Uptown Records, since he was the first act signed to the label, and as an executive at Uptown he's was instrumental in bringing Jodeci, Monifah, Soul For Real and others to the company.Along with DJ Eddie F, Trouble T-Roy and G-Wiz aka The Boyz, he brought us hit after hit. He could do new jack swing, boom bap, reggae, pop...he could do it all. There have been very few hip hop artists who could seamlessly maneuver through so many styles and genres at such a high level, all while never compromising his authenticity. Since his untimely passing in 2011, he's been sorely missed, and that's why we're talking about none other than Heavy D.If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

Let Me Tell You Somethin' Bitch

The 90's were a lituation in many ways, they were also a hot ass mess, but I digress. When I was a girl-many, many moons ago-you couldn't tell me I wasn't the next Monifah (yes, that's a B.A.P.S reference). I wrote songs and performed them for my parents, who were really sweet, cause I was an artist and sensitive about my shit. Little did I know, at the time, some of my lyrics were sexually explicit. Heavy D & the Boyz, is a group which included dancers/background vocalists G-Whiz (Glen Parrish), "Trouble" T. Roy (Troy Dixon), and DJ and producer Eddie F (born Edward Ferrell). The group maintained a sizable audience in the United States through most of the 1990s. The five albums the group released were produced by Teddy Riley, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, his cousin Pete Rock, and Eddie F. Myers also released four solo albums and discovered Soul for Real and Monifah.  Heavy D & the Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records, with Heavy D as the frontman and only rapper. Eddie F was his business partner in the group, DJ, and one of the producers. The other two members, T-Roy and G-Wiz were the dancers. Their debut, Living Large, was released in 1987. The album was a commercial success; Big Tyme was a breakthrough that included four hits. "Trouble T. Roy" died at age 22 in a fall on July 15, 1990, in Indianapolis. Dixon's death led to a tribute on the follow-up platinum album, Peaceful Journey. Pete Rock & CL Smooth created a tribute to Trouble T. “It IS a good morning. No matter what it is or what's going on in life — there's always someone else in a different situation.” Terence Thompson brings his positivity and joy for life into his album If I Only Had A Band. Whether it's embracing the day through his track “Good Morning,” or feeling welcomed into a warm, inviting restaurant like in “Yassie's Cafe,” If I Only Had A Band will have you feeling good for all 20 tracks. It's not just the message that feels good — each tune really grooves. Terence combines his rap and R&B influence into this pseudo-jazz offering. While rap might seem like a far cry from jazz, Terence says they're really not so different — he even calls them intertwined. Each genre carries similar themes, both are continually trying to push the envelope creatively, and they're both truly American art forms. And, as he says, great music is great music. Terence Thompson is also a notable and versatile producer for hundreds of independent artists and has collaborated with some major artists — he worked with producer Teddy Riley on the song “Heaven Can Wait” on Michael Jackson's Invincible album, and can also be heard on Monifah's “Too Late” and “How Ya Gonna Luv Me.” He brings that expertise to his own songwriting, along with a team of wonderful musicians. Listen to the full interview with Terence Thompson to learn more about how he transitioned from DJing as a teenager to a versatile producer, what his role as producer entails, and the stories behind his album If I Only Had A Band. Learn more about Terence Thompson at www.mrterencethompson.com. You can find If I Only Had a Band anywhere you stream music. It's also available for purchase on Amazon Music. Party Favorz started the Ultimate 90's House Classic series in the fall of 2020. The overwhelming response to this series has been tremendous — certainly bigger than I thought it would be. A year later, we're now reaching the end of the decade and have pulled out all the stops for what is certainly considered the golden age of House Music. As we noted in earlier editions, the musical landscape began changing in the second half of the decade. After bubbling in the underground for several years before moving into the mainstream, Trance music took on a life of its own. While those tracks are not featured in this series (they'll get their own ultimate classics series soon enough) — Progressive House was the alternate powerhouse genre in the movement fueled by Hex Hector, Victor Calderone, Thunderpuss, Jonathan Peters, Peter Rauhofer (a.k.a. Club 69), Danny Tenaglia, Rosabel, Razor N Guido, Pablo Flores, Junior Vasquez and Johnny Vicioius who blurred the lines between Progressive House and Trance. Probably one of the biggest unsung heroes from this time period is Soul Solution who consisted of Bobby Guy and Ernie Lake. These guys were the go to for many commercial remixes and there's a story there that I can't seem to dig up so I'll just go by what I remember. Don't hold this as gospel because I'm only going by what I remembered. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this story. Soul Solution was their brand but if I remember correctly, the trademark was owned by a major label. When they attempted to leave the label, they weren't allowed to take the name with them. Since their brand was built under this name, it was near impossible to market themselves independently. Though, Ralphi Rosario from Rosabel managed to break out on his own as did Chris Cox from Thunderpuss and Guido Osorio from Razor N Guido but Bobby Guy and Ernie Lake were not household names. It's likely why Hex Hector (who had worked with the guys on the breakthrough remix of Toni Braxton's "Un-break My Heart" in 1996) picked up the slack in the coming years even though he was already in high demand. You'll likely remember a lot of their remixes but less so who remixed them. Party Favorz is here to set the record straight as much of their work will be featured over the next several sets. The major change in club music was no accident but something that was in the making for the better half of the decade and is fondly remembered by club kids (including myself) with 1999 through maybe 2001 being the best the genre servered up. As musical tastes changed, Progressive House eventually gave way to Electro House — another genre that came up through the underground. From some of the more obscure tracks, the biggest club hits including that whole short-lived Ibiza sound — TU90HC has got you covered. I had a lot of fun creating this first set and was taken back by Monifah's "Touch Me," which I had completely forgotten about. There will be a lot of these gems over these remaining sets that are gonna jog your memory and put a smile on your face. Until the next time...ENJOY! Christopher Williams (born August 22, 1967) is an American singer–songwriter and actor. Williams, who emerged during the late 1980s as a recording artist for Geffen Records, has scored many R&B hit singles, notably "Talk to Myself" (1989), "I'm Dreamin'" (1991) and "Every Little Thing U Do" (1993). The single "I'm Dreamin'", from the New Jack City soundtrack, became a No. 1 single on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts. After a six-year hiatus from recording music, he returned to the scene with Real Men Do on the indie label Renegade, in 2001. It received a glowing, flattering review in Ebony Magazine that summer. In between solo pursuits, he has been a contributor to Alex Bugnon's "As Promised," with a smooth-jazz version of Mary J. Blige's "All That I Can Say," featured on "In Your World" with Twista & The Speedknot Mobstas, a very up-tempo track on the soundtrack of "Doctor Dolittle," and on the Cafe Soul All-Stars CD with a single titled "Used To Be." Other soundtrack contributions include: "Tha 2 of Us" from the film Bulletproof, "Superhero" from the film Butter, "Boom and the Bang" (featuring R&B songstress Monifah) and "I'm Yours" from the soundtrack of the stage play Men Cry in the Dark, and "Stranger In My Life" from the film Gunmen. Additional collaborations throughout his career include: "Round and Round" and "No Sunshine" from the CD Phuture Flava, "Love You More Than Words Can Say" from the CD Soul Blitz Allstars, "I Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" (a duet with Miki Howard), "You Are So Fine" (a duet with Shae), "Can't Wait To Be With You" from the DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince release Code Red, "I Wanna B Ure Lover" from the F.S. Effect release So Deep It's Bottomless, and "Sexual Healing" (a duet with reggae dancehall queen Patra).Acting[edit]Williams appeared in the 1991 film New Jack City in the role of Kareem Akbar, one of Nino Brown's assistants. He also had a cameo appearance in the 1990s police drama New York Undercover as "the singer," performing "Stranger in My Life," in the episode titled "The Shooter." He had another cameo in Gunmen, starring Christopher Lambert and Mario Van Peebles, singing a song titled "Stranger in My Life". Williams has also starred or co-starred in several successful off-Broadway theatre productions during the 2000s, including A Good Man Is Hard to Find, A House Is Not a Home, Men Cry in the Dark, and The Man He Used to Be. Recently, Williams played a main character in the stage play The Clean-up Woman, written by JD Lawrence, alongside actresses Telma Hopkins and Jackée. Williams also appeared in the stage plays Guilty Until Proven Innocent starring K-Ci & JoJo, and The Man of Her Dreams starring Shirley Murdock and Dave Hollister of Blackstreet fame. Williams also played the role of "Ned" in the Reuben Rox 2002 B movie comedy/horror/thriller film Revenge of the Unhappy Campers (bootleg alternate title Night of the Unhappy Campers). This particular work has not been released to DVD for sale, though it can be rented in some larger markets. Christopher Williams was born August 22, 1967 in Bronx, New York. Williams is the nephew of jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. Known for his passionate baritone voice, Williams has been called the "Modern Teddy Pendergrass"; he is praised till this day for "sounding just like he did when he first hit the music scene". Many are in awe as to how Williams has maintained such stellar vocals for thirty plus years. He attended Purchase College; now known as State University of New York in Harrison, New York. He is an actor, singer, songwriter, and producer. Williams is known for roles in New Jack City(1991), Bulletproof(1996), and Gunmen(1993). He is currently very active in theater productions and musicals. After releasing three albums, all of which charted on the Billboard 200, he took a break from recording from 1995-2001. Over the course of William's career, he has enjoyed four Top 10 hits on the U.S. R & B charts:Talk to Myself, Promises, I'm Dreamin, and Every Little Thing You Do''. Williams has a son, Christopher Jr, who was born in 1988, from a relationship with a stylist. Williams has another son Austin, who was born in 1991, with actress Stacey Dash. He also has a daughter, Cierra Barnes–Williams, born in 1993 from a relationship with Heather Barnes. https://www.instagram.com/officialchristopherwilliams/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Adina Howard (born November 14, 1973) is an American singer, and songwriter.[1] She rose to fame during the mid-1990s with her debut album, Do You Wanna Ride? and her debut single, "Freak Like Me". Some of her other minor hits include "What's Love Got to Do with It?" (with Warren G), "(Freak) And U Know It", "Nasty Grind", "Freaks" (with Play-N-Skillz and Krayzie Bone) and "T-Shirt & Panties" (with Jamie Foxx). 1993–1996: Do You Wanna Ride? and the hit success of "Freak Like Me"[edit]Her debut album Do You Wanna Ride?, featuring the Platinum-certified hit single, "Freak Like Me", was released in 1995 and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Her follow-up singles included "My Up and Down" (#32 R&B, #68 Hot 100) and "It's All About You" (#58 R&B).In 1996, she collaborated with Warren G for the Police Story 3: Super Cop soundtrack with the single "What's Love Got to Do with It" which featured a sample of the Tina Turner hit. The single was another hit for the two, peaking at #36 on the Hot 100, #32 on R&B, and #2 on the UK charts. The music video also featured Jackie Chan in a cameo. Also that year, she collaborated on a track with Somethin' for the People titled "Damned If I Do" which appeared on the soundtrack for A Thin Line Between Love and Hate as well as their self-titled debut album. She also recorded the track "For the Funk" for the Sunset Park soundtrack.1997: Welcome to Fantasy Island and acting[edit]In 1997, she prepared for the release of her second album, Welcome to Fantasy Island (originally titled Portrait of a Lady).[2][3] It garnered critical raves and a moderate hit with the lead single, "(Freak) And U Know It", but was shelved by Elektra Records in 1997. The album was leaked to the internet a few years later and promotional copies sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay.One of the shelved album's tracks, "T-Shirt & Panties" (a collaboration with Jamie Foxx) ended up on a soundtrack the following year. It was originally slated for the soundtrack to his film Booty Call but it eventually ended up on the soundtrack to the 1998 feature film Woo. It was released promotionally as a single, and the remix featured Cam'ron and Charli Baltimore. Also this year, she collaborated with Cydal on a track titled "Chocolate (Cuties & Condoms)" which was released as a single for the Bulletproof soundtrack. The track was also included on their debut album Cydalwayz the following year.During this time, she made her feature film debut in the independent film High Freakquency, starring Deon Richmond and John Witherspoon. In 2002, she filmed her second movie role, in the still-unreleased Casanova's Demise for director Tigre Hill.[4]1998–2005: New label and The Second Coming[edit]By 2004, Howard released her third album The Second Coming on Rufftown Records. A video for the first single, "Nasty Grind", played on BET during early morning hours. The album sold poorly due to lack of promotion and only managed to gather 40,000 copies on store shelves and she was later sued by the label.[5] A second single, "(Outside) The Club" was slated to be released, along with a remix album The Second Coming: Remixed & UnCut but both were cancelled following her departure from the label.Later that year, she collaborated with Play-N-Skillz and Krayzie Bone for the track "Freaks" which sampled her hit single "Freak Like Me". The single appeared on the Play-N-Skillz album The Process and became a hit, peaking at #52 R&B and #69 on the Hot 100 (her first-charting single in 7 years). She released an official mixtape album (with DJ RIP) featuring new songs, remixes, and unreleased tracks titled Let You Hit through SoundJewelz.com on August 5, 2005.[6]2006–2007: Private Show[edit]In 2006, she announced that the single "Phone Sex" was going to be released, but the following year, the song "L.O.V.A." was released digitally as her lead single. Additionally, a song titled "Hips" was announced to be her second single.[7]Her fourth album, Private Show was delayed many times by Arsenal Records, almost to the point of being shelved.[8] However, it was released on June 26, 2007 along with a promotional single, "Picture This". As of 2008, the album has sold 4,000+ copies.[9] Following the album's release, a remixes EP for "My Hips" (appears as "Hips" on her album) was released on iTunes & other digital services in December.[10] A third official single, "Tease" was slated to be released, but as Howard parted ways with the label shortly after the album's release, it was cancelled. In 2008, she appeared in the short film Poke the Sleeping Bear which won the Grand Jury Award at the 2008 Solstice Film Festival.[11]On September 25, 2009 a UK compilation Independent Soul Divas 2 was released on Lola Waxx Records. This compilation album featured "What Do I Do", a song recorded by Howard in 2008. The album version is different than the version that was originally included on Howard's MySpace page.2008–2014: Culinary school, marriage and documentary[edit]In 2011, she started work on her Culinary Arts degree, a cookbook, a new album and a restaurant in Austin, Texas.[12] She graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu with an Associates in Culinary Arts in October 2012.[13][14]In 2012, Howard released two buzz singles online: "2 Close" and "Ooh Wee". “One Moment,” is written and produced by Quennel Worthy and Monifah. It is a soaring mid tempo ballad that takes you on a lyrical and musical journey; that will captivate listeners upon first listen and pierce the hearts of everyone who hears it. ? Monifah states: *It speaks to the heart of a very basic need we all share. The need to access that place inside of ourselves, be alone, quiet the 'noise' and tune into the voice of our creator. When you take time to slow down, be still and  listen, this is when your creativity and healing have a chance to flourish. I'm sharing my personal wake-up call with the world. "One Moment" is my open letter. After re-emerging to the spotlight thanks to TV One's franchise R&B Divas, Monifah returns to her passion of music. It's been 14 years since Monifah released an album.” When she gave you memorable melodies with top Billboard hits like her super hits "Touch It", “I Miss You (Come Back Home)” and “You Don't Have To Love Me" among many more. Monifah is preparing to carve a new path along the trail of R&B Soul, Adult Urban Contemporary and Pop music.East Harlem, NY born Monifa Carter was a child prodigy at the tender young age of seven, exuding talents as both a singer and an actor. She appeared as a principal in the first national Hi-C Drink Box commercial and can be credited with several other national commercials. Monifah's theatrical debut was at the age of eleven when she landed the starring role as “Hermia” in an off-Broadway production of Shakespeare's, “A Midsummers Night's Dream “. Monifah was a “triple threat” and a force to be reckoned with.

About Jurni Jurni Rayne is not your average vocalist/artist. This Dallas, Texas native has a great sound and unique flair. Do not judge a book by its cover because this anomaly of a diva will have you melting over the sultry sounds of her voice and the depth of her lyrics. Jurni Rayne is well versed in guitar, piano and flute; however, it is the voice that pulls everything together. Jurni Rayne is has a fierce determination and an undefeated spirit. She doesn’t allow the difficulty of being an independent, “starving” artist control her destiny in music. With support from many friends and family, she has consistently been encouraged to keep on striving toward her musical goals. Her hard work and determination has gotten her many opportunities. She was warranted a chance to open for Fantasia Barrino and Monifah and she had her song, "What Happens When," placed in a film titled “The Last Fall.”  While music is important to Jurni Rayne, it is equally important for her to be an OUT lesbian artist. Jurni feels that your race, socioeconomic background, “hood” or sexual preference does not define the person or the talent. Because Jurni Rayne is a feminine identified lesbian, it would be east for her to pretend to be heterosexual or, from the advice of many, just keep silent and let people make whatever assumptions they would like to make. Jurni Rayne takes a visible and vocal stand against “hiding” by intertwining her lyrics and lifestyle without fear or regret. Jurni Rayne uses any opportunity to educate the public and eradicate stereotypes and stigmas, whether that is homosexuality or HIV/AIDS awareness; she stands for justice in all forms.
