A podcast for car guys, car girls, automotive enthusiasts, and casual observers. We cover everything from Aston Martin to Volkswagen in search for the answer to our most pressing question: WHY CARS? "Why Cars" celebrates the diverse world of automobiles, delving into the cars we adore, critique, and reminisce about - both past and present. Join brothers Nick and Hunter for humorous, candid discussions that embrace our love for cars, from everyday vehicles to exotic collections.
In this episode, we break down McLaren's surprising Formula 1 dominance (thanks to Zac Brown) and Ferrari's rare strategic win. Nick shares the best cars he spotted on a drive through Southern Utah, and we both drove some monsters — including the Ford Raptor R and the Tesla Cybertruck.Hunter bought a 2016 Range Rover Autobiography LWB, and Nick tries (unsuccessfully) to sell his ML500.We rant about the absurd size of the Bronco Raptor, the horror that is the new Subaru Outback, and debate whether new cars are too good compared to the raw, analog feel of old ones.#CarPodcast #Formula1 #Cybertruck #FordRaptorR #RangeRover #CarEnthusiast #McLarenF1 #SubaruOutback #CarCulture #AutoTalk
In this episode, we kick things off by naming the different “groups” of car enthusiasts—what do you call a group of Subaru owners? Then we dive into a lively debate about the worst automotive design eras, narrowing it down to the 1970s, 1990s, and today's tech-heavy snoozefest. But even in dark design times, there were gems—so we highlight the best cars from each ugly era. We also reflect on the specific cars that sparked our love for driving, and wrap up with the harsh truth of shopping for the perfect budget car when your standards are sky-high.#CarEnthusiastLife #UglyCars #AutomotiveHistory #BadCarDesign #BudgetCarHunt #CarGuyProblems #CarBrandFans #ClassicCars #WorstCarDesigns #AutomotivePodcast
In this episode, we dive into the latest Formula One drama—Ferrari is doing what Ferrari does best: blowing it.We also talk about the absurd food prices at ski resorts, the wild Porsche condo tower in Miami, and the Martini-liveried Porsche 944 that drove past us (potentially carrying Dog the Bounty Hunter).Plus, we debate the worst Porsche we'd dare take to a Porsche Club of America meeting, Hunter sells his Audi SQ5 (what's next?), and we discuss why muscle cars just don't do it for us. Oh, and our friend totally bought an expensive watch but won't admit it.#Formula1 #FerrariFails #PorscheClub #Porsche944 #SkiResortPrices #MuscleCarDebate #AudiSQ5 #CarEnthusiast #LuxuryCars #F1News
Nick and Hunter (re)introduce themselves and discuss why so many car podcasts are boring. Hunter reflects on his old Volvo S70, and we roast modern BMW's and their awful advertising strategies (and everything else, really). We dive into why modern cars feel like profit-driven products rather than exciting machines, even in brands like Porsche. Plus, we preview the upcoming F1 season, new drivers, and why Nick prefers IndyCar.#WhyCarsPodcast #CarCulture #BMWFail #PorscheInteriors #F1Season #IndyCarRacing #VolvoS70 #ModernCars #CarPodcast #AutomotiveInsights
Today's episode is packed with everything from luxury cars to childhood trauma. We discuss the Carhartt Edition Dodge 1500 and how Carhartt has been hijacked by hipsters. Nick shares a tragic tale of being bitten by an old horse, while Hunter talks about a client's insane Bentley collection—and the mystery cars hidden under covers. We also debate the true cost of EV charging (spoiler: it's not as cheap as you think) and why flying cars will never happen. Plus, we break down the WEC racing series and its F1 connections before Nick assigns new nicknames and mascots for every F1 team. Don't miss this one!
In this episode, Nick embarks on a thrilling adventure...adding power steering fluid to his ML500, which had begun sounding like a humpback whale. Meanwhile, Hunter drops off a Tacoma and ends up piloting his father-in-law's Jeep home under unexpected circumstances. We dive into the world of used Porsche classifieds, rank potential replacements for Nick's ML500, and discuss whether Nick's car-selling impulses are fueled by ADHD, anxiety, or just a deep-seated love for shiny new things. We also debate the pros and cons of vinyl wraps and PPF, discuss a hilariously rusty Fiat X1/9, and question why non-car people still think Maserati is the pinnacle of automotive luxury. Plus, Hunter shares a horror story about dealership incompetence—are dealerships even worth the hassle anymore?
In this episode, we cover a chaotic mix of stories, car sightings, and questionable life choices.Nick spots anE60 M5, an oldMercedes, and aMartini-liveried Harley Davidson Road King—because why not? We witness a man oncross-country rollerblades (yes, that's a thing) and can't stop laughing. We also roastSubway's new footlong Oreo, discuss longboarding disasters (involving deer, moose, and hot glue), and Hunter shares his wild days working atHarley Davidson. Plus, Nick finally fixed his wife's Suburban, which means it's officially time to shop for a new car and say goodbye to his beloved ML500.Oh, and Nick appeared onThe Salty Horologist podcast, where he felt insecure about his watch knowledge—so naturally, he's now committed to learning more about cars. (We're not holding our breath.)Buckle up. Do we love different cars in different life situations? In this episode, Nick rediscovers his love for skiing and how it has changed his perspective on cars. Hunter takes a deep dive into Thailand—learning some unexpected facts and admiring the cool/terrible cars (and scooters!) that never make it to the U.S. We also discuss how modern technology is making life (and driving) too easy, making people lazier and less connected to their cars. Finally, we call out some of the most embarrassing cars you can currently buy—vehicles that are overpriced, purposeless, and all about making a statement instead of being genuinely great. If you own a Hummer EV, Cybertruck, or an SUV coupé, we apologize in advance. Oh, and Hunter drove some cars. As usual. #Podcast #CarTalk #AutomotiveNews #Cybertruck #HummerEV #SUV #Driving #TechGoneTooFar #ThailandCars #Skiing #CarCulture
In this episode, Nick finally confesses to destroying his parents' Jaguar...in the dumbest way possible. We also reminisce about our early motorcycle misadventures (one crash, one abandoned bike), dive into the upcoming Formula One season, and discuss Lewis Hamilton's shocking move to Ferrari. Plus, Hunter might be buying a Range Rover LWB Autobiography, and he got behind the wheel of a stunning 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS in Miami Blue. Tune in for chaos, car talk, and a healthy dose of ADHD distractions!
What could go wrong with a 25 year old twin-turbocharged German V8, anyway? NOTHING!! Season 3 kicks off with a bang as we dive into all the cars Nick drove over the break—ranging from a tire-shredding Dodge Demon (with all of its seats) to delightfully practical Mercedes wagons, and most intriguingly, a 2000 Audi RS6 that might just have a new home. Meanwhile, Hunter gets behind the wheel of some hot hatches, including the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R, and shares his thoughts. We also take a detour to chat about our skiing adventures and good times in Park City. Whether you're here for the cars or the chaos, buckle up! Also like, share, and subscribe. To those in the automotive community, let's have a chat. This episode takes a long, hard (that's what she said) look at how the once-beloved website "Bring a Trailer" has transformed into a battleground for pedantic braggers and lost its charm. Nick shares a tale of chatting with a Porsche 911 owner who surprisingly didn't know much about his own car, while Hunter recounts his experience behind the wheel of a 996 Porsche 911. Plus, we dive deep into why the Toyota Prius might just be the most soul-sucking car ever built—and, don't worry, we've got some way more exciting alternatives lined up for you. If you love cars with personality, this one's for you! #WhyCarsPodcast #BringATrailer #Porsche911 #ToyotaPrius #CarCulture #CarTalk #CarEnthusiast #DrivingPassion #FunCars #AutomotiveLife
Let's do some shopping, but for things we'll actually enjoy... Come along as we dive into some car things: Nick shares his list of potential replacements for his current ride, while Hunter runs through cars he's hunting down to help a friend find their perfect match. We also break down the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season—was it everything we hoped for?—and take a hard look at Jaguar's bafflingly terrible new direction. Tune in for car shopping insights, F1 wrap-ups, and plenty of laughs along the way. #WhyCarsPodcast #CarShopping #Formula1 #F12024 #JaguarCars #CarCulture #Supercars #AutomotiveNews #CarDebates #CarTalk
Let's get controversial and discuss why we think (know) German cars are better than Japanese (and American) cars—prepare for some spicy takes! We also dive into the tragic, disgusting, disappointing re-launch of Jaguar and why it's been such a letdown. And just to keep things fair, we reveal which American and Japanese cars we'd buy if we absolutely had to. First! Let's chat about the struggles Lamborghini is facing with the new #Revuelto—because even supercar giants have their headaches. Our dilemma: what super car would you buy? Deciding between the 2024 Porsche 911 GT3RS, Lamborghini Huracan STO, and the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Plus, we brainstorm some highly questionable names for upcoming holiday car sales events. It's fast cars, tough choices, and a dash of humor—don't miss it!#WhyCarsPodcast #LamborghiniRevuelto #Porsche911GT3RS #HuracanSTO #AventadorSVJ #CarShopping #Supercars #comedy #conversation
What's your pick: Toyotathon, VW Sign and Drive, A December to Remember? Something else??Also, Hunter shares his recent encounter with a, let's say, over-aggressive, city sanitation worker who shut down his street-side detail appointment (that involved a Bentley Bentayga and a Range Rover...).We also talk about what could possibly replace my beloved Mercedes-Benz ML500, the chaos of upcoming holiday car sales, and more. Join us for laughs, rants, and some relatable car-owner frustrations!#Automotive #Porsche #Cars #CarCulture #CarTalk #Comedy #Funny #Mercedes #Ferrari
Anyway, what are your thoughts on the new Ferrari halo car?? This week we go off the rails a bit with a discussion on high-end watches (because, why not?). Our studio is perfect for car spotting, and we can't help but be distracted by the flood of beautiful Range Rovers we spot passing by. But the main event? Our brutal, unfiltered thoughts on the new Ferrari F80 and why it's the poster child for the downfall of the modern car. Buckle up for our old man car guy opinions, car-spotting, and automotive hot takes. #WhyCarsPodcast #FerrariF80 #FerrariSF90 #RangeRover #LuxuryCars #CarCulture
Let's jump into the ultimate car buying debate: Should you buy a high-mileage car with a solid service history or a low-mileage car with zero service records? We weigh the pros and cons and share our own experiences. We also take a fun detour to brainstorm new names for the Utah Hockey Club and talk about the joys (or nightmares) of driving in the rain. Finally, we discuss the release of the new Ferrari F80 and why, honestly, we couldn't care less. Get ready for a mix of humor, car insights, and plenty of hot takes. #UsedCarBuying #FerrariF80 #CarDebates #DrivingInTheRain #UtahHockey #Cars
I mean, God PROBABLY drives an old ML. But we know he doesn't drive a Nissan Rogue. Come along as we dive into why modern cars are loaded with too much unnecessary technology, and why we long for the simpler days of old-school car design. From our love of analog driving experiences to poking fun at the soul-crushing Nissan Rogue, this episode is a mix of nostalgia, car culture, and some good laughs. If you miss the days when cars were built with heart and not just software, this one's for you. Listen in for our hot takes on why less tech could mean more fun behind the wheel. #CarCulture #OldSchoolCars #AnalogDriving #CarTech #NissanRogue #AutomotivePassion
Today, we tried something... different. We thought it would be a brilliant idea to record from the front seat of my amazing 2003 Mercedes ML500 while simultaneously doing some car spotting. Spoiler: it was an absolute ADHD nightmare. Between the shiny Porsches and questionable Chryslers, we barely held a single thought together. If you've ever tried to talk about anything serious while car spotting, you'll relate to this one. Join us as we get hilariously distracted, lose our train of thought (a lot), and somehow still have a blast doing it! #CarSpotting #ADHDStruggles #WhyCars #PodcastingGoneWrong #AutomotiveCulture #MercedesML500
We had some DEEP reflection on what it means to love cars, and if we truly love them or their status. There are plenty of people who purchase cars because they're loud, flashy, and get noticed. Does this mean that they aren't TRUE automotive enthusiasts? Also, some consumer advice: proofread your used car ad before you post it (and make sure you price it right)!
Car guys like what they like, but should they be more open to other car buying options? Such a tricky question, and one that we'll explore in this episode. We also look at how electric cars are (still, and more apparently than ever) not the solution people think they are. Have a listen, like, and subscribe!
I've seen dozens of Jeeps, curiously decorated with rubber ducks - now I know why. Also, there is a new BMW M5 Touring slated for American release. It got me thinking: what is the greatest wagon that's currently for sale? There aren't many, but what we do get to choose from is LOVELY. Like, listen, and share. And as always, ignore the check engine light.
You'll never believe the cars that were spotted in the kindergarten pickup line today. Multi-six figure cars, just dropping 5 year olds off at school. No big deal. Plus, we continue our live car spotting commentary, and come across some BANGERS. As always, listen, subscribe, and like. Please.
Ford has officially made an entrance into the conversation for the greatest factory wheels of all time... and they're fitted to a compact truck. We'll discuss what makes them so cool and where they came from. Also! We play a word association game, talk about being attacked by a bee in the Fiat Abarth (and a cricket in a Camry), and uncover the most amazing school shuttle of all time - a Lamborghini LM002 with a wagon conversion kit. Let's have some old fashioned fun talking about cars and discussing the cars that drive past the studio in real time.
To our car guys (and girls): what's your deepest, darkest automotive guilty pleasure? I promise you we're not here to judge. Maybe a little bit. But this is a safe space. We also do some LIVE car spotting from our studio, and provide some very helpful consumer advice. #WhyCars #AutomotiveCulture #CarTalk #CarSpotting #GuiltyPleasures #CarEnthusiasts
We present our list of the 5 car modifications that need to be abandoned. Fast. It's also road trip season, and Hunter and I have been on a couple of good ones. Shoutout to the Chevy Suburban, by the way, which is the greatest road trip vehicle ever constructed by human hands. We also celebrate Independence Day, lament the disgusting state of current BMW's, and discuss the merits of the first generation Honda Fit. We cover a lot.
Purchasing a used car through a third-party can be intimidating; I'll help you find red flags to avoid when searching through your local classifieds. Consumer top tips, if you will. Also, please start buying colorful cars again. White, silver, and black are too boring.
Is the Ferrari 6.5-liter V12 the greatest engine of all time? It's certainly in the conversation. We're absolutely over-the-moon excited for the new Ferrari 12Cilindri and talk about why. Also - what's the craziest automotive / designer collaboration you can remember? Today's top-5 list covers all of our favorites (and we provide a few more no brainers that need to be done).
Let's chat about the cars that, although they were cool when they were new, haven't stood the test of time. Not cars that were bad when they first came out (leave the poor Pontiac Aztec alone), but cars that looked great when they were introduced. Let's face it - the PT Cruiser was cool for a minute...
Have you ever looked at a car and wondered why it had such a terrible name? Who at McLaren decided it would be a good idea to name a car the MP4-12C? Hunter has listed out his top 5 worst car names, and there are some bangers.
Does it make sense to purchase the cheapest new car available in the United States? I present my reasons that spending $20,000 on a new economy car is a terrible, no good, very bad idea, and present five worthy alternatives (and some notable mentions). Let's also discuss how the Pininfarina-designed Coke Freestyle machine needs to be retired.
What amazing cars have you driven that fly under the radar of the common car guy? We have thoughts (of course). Hunter provides us with his 5 favorite cars to drive that deserve more attention. We also discuss purchasing cars with rebuilt titles, being addicted to browsing automotive classified ads, and Nick tells elephant story that must be heard to be believed.
What car from an everyday(ish) brand is the most off-the-wall? We have some thoughts, and I provide my top-5 strangest cars from normal brands. Also, stick around until the end of the pod for one of the wildest stories we've ever heard...
Toyota has completed an amazing study on true E.V. carbon footprints, and the results are shocking (electricity pun). Their 1:6:90 rule might just redefine how we look at the true impact of the automotive industry's lurch towards full electrification. At least, we hope it does.
Turns out, the ugliest car ever made just might not be the ugliest car ever made. Was the Pontiac Aztec ugly? Undeniably so. But given today's current design trends, it's not as ugly as it used to be. In fact, we think it would sell quite well in today's market. Let's chat about what other long-lost cars would be a hit today.
What's the biggest automotive repair bill you've ever had to take on? Hunter's 2006 BMW M5 recently went under the knife to diagnose a faulty transmission, and may have had a major automotive win. We also talk about getting tuberculosis (well, probably tuberculosis, but definitely not just a cold), our favorite automotive background extras, and a friend's hilariously terrible Cyber Truck ownership experience.
Can driving like a hooligan actually help you become a better driver? We think so, but there are definitely a couple of caveats... Also, winter tires are an absolute must if you drive in any sort of snow on a consistent basis. All-wheel-drive is great, but it's not the invincibility shield some people want it to be! Finally, we welcome my newborn daughter Millie to the world. Don't forget to like and subscribe!
Is it a good idea to finance a car purchase over a 7-year term? The average financing term for a new car purchase in the United States in 2023 was nearly 6 years! This is a terrible, awful, no good, very bad idea. Also, what's the heaviest mass-produced (non-industrial) vehicle you can purchase from a dealership? There's no shortage of massive vehicles to choose from. But, the heaviest one is nearly too large to drive without a commercial driver's license... Listen, like, share, and subscribe!
What are the worst car models made by our favorite automotive brands? Even our favorite automotive manufacturers have a couple of models they might want to forget about - but we'll never let them! Also, what's the most frustrating car buying experience you've been through? Hunter and I are in the midst of (another) car search, and I've had a couple of less-than-lovely experiences.
Is there a car that you used to love, that you're now embarrassed by? We explore this very thing, and upon internal reflection, there aren't too many cars that we're actually ashamed of liking (but there are a few...). We also discuss how much we miss cool car names (special shout out to the Subaru Brat, Cadillac El Dorado, and Ferrari Daytona), and the incomprehensible names that auto makers currently give to their cars. As always: listen, like, share, and subscribe!
Is there a car brand that you absolutely refuse to buy? We ended last week with a cliffhanger, and we're not sorry. Along our "Why Cars" journey, we're always trying to figure out why cars make us tick, and why some cars produce absolutely no emotion in us whatsoever. We answer this question once and for all - let us know if we got it right, or if we offended you to the point of physical rage. As always, listen, like, and subscribe!
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when repairing your car? We've all made a few mistakes, and Hunter and I share a couple of our biggest automotive blunders - please don't judge us. This episode is dedicated to stories from our past; there are a bunch. My favorite involves a disheartened friend, a local restaurant, and revenge served cold (some might say... Frosty). Have a listen, like, share, and subscribe!
There's no greater time to be an American F1 fan than this weekend. Have you always dreamed that you could watch a Formula One race at, say, 11pm, and follow it up with a $9.99 all-you-can-eat shrimp buffet? Because the Las Vegas Grand Prix is here to grant your wish! Not only are we excited, but Nick took the time to name EVERY CORNER on the new Vegas circuit - and there are some bangers. We also chat about Thanksgiving being the best holiday, being crushed by an airbag, and tires as bald as Jason Statham. Listen, enjoy, and SUBSCRIBE!
Have you ever purchased a car that you told yourself you'd never buy? For car guys, that's typically the question that gets asked right before or after they purchase a minivan. In this episode, we ask ourselves this very question (but it's worse than a minivan...). There's also an update to Nick's magnetic brain remapping that seems to be going well, though he dearly misses caffeine. OH, and we finally have new microphones! Sweet, sweet intro-level podcasting microphones. The sound difference is just lovely! Take a listen, subscribe, and let us know what you think.
What's your favorite automotive coach builder? We're here to discuss just that. (Hint: it's absolutely NOT Mansory.) Leave a comment and let us know if we got it right... There is a special car driven this week by Nick. This particular car combines his love of Volvos, vintage Volkswagens, and absolute randomness. We also have a heart-to-heart about living with mental health struggles and current plans, tools, and treatments that we're using to overcome them. As the immortal Tommy Callahan would say: "Don't run away from your feelings!" Promised links: RUF Yellowbird at the Nurburgring Senna in an NSX at Suzuka Nick's random weekly drive: the VW LT40 Come along with us on this episode. Subscribe. Share. Get out and drive something fun!
Do you love your car? Really? This week, I, Nick Dall, crushingly realized that I am not mechanically inclined and questioned my status as a car guy. Through trial and tribulation, I developed a new metric to measure whether or not I truly needed to hand over my man card / automotive fandom pass and buy a Prius. Hopefully this new metric will help you decide - do you TRULY love cars? Hunter and I also discuss online addiction and the needless rage and discontent produced by our endless classified scrolling. Pro tip: don't grow attached to anything you don't fully intend to buy... Plus! I've been on a heavy Oasis kick, and added a new intro song. You're welcome.
Is there a current production car (non-super car...) that will be collectible in 25 years? We have some thoughts. Also: does it make more sense to collect expensive watches or expensive cars? Our collective ADHD drives the conversation to our favorite fast(ish) food, the E60 M5's dodgy infotainment system, and my 8-year-old who is destined to be the next great American soccer star.
How much money should a car manufacturer make from each car they sell? Today's show was recorded al fresco! Listen closely for crickets, which was rude but possibly appropriate. We just learned how much profit Rivian makes on every electric truck and SUV they sell, and we are shooketh. Do you have a guess? If so, you're probably wrong... Our ADHD also leads our conversation down a road to the English Premier League, the best cars at Porsche's Rennsport Reunion, and Real Salt Lake. What a journey.
What is the greatest cold cereal of all time? Sure. That question has been asked before. But we are absolutely qualified experts in the field, and our conclusion is more valid than any other conclusion ever reached. We also build our ultimate sans-Porsche 5-car garages (there are some WILD answers). Come along and see how much you agree/disagree with our lists.
Who ya got - Seinfeld or Friends? There's only one acceptable answer, no cap (is this how you say it, youths? I'm old). Since we're talking about TV, it's also time to discuss the best Top Gear episodes from the Jeremy, James, and Richard era. AND, what are the best/worst car modifications you can do to your whip (is this still cool to say?).
What is the most iconic stock car wheel of all time? We have some opinions about all of the greats, and a bunch of the not so greats (looking at you, wheel designers from the 2020's). Here in Utah, we have one of the greatest private classified ad platforms in the country - KSL Classifieds. This is a problem for Hunter and me, as we spend FAR too much time scrolling through the ever-changing bounty of poor but exciting automotive decisions.
