Travis McBride, a 46-year-old therapist specializing in anger management and the owner of Starting Point Mental Health in DeLand, Florida, has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder. McBride stands accused of fatally shooting 52-year-old Clinton Dorsey as part of an ongoing dispute, with police discovering Dorsey's body stuffed in the trunk of McBride's car. The incident unfolded when police responded to a "suspicious" call on South Frankfort Avenue on Thursday morning. Eyewitnesses reported seeing McBride dragging the victim's body across the road, placing it in his car, and later returning to clean the crime scene. DeLand police discovered shell casings and blood at the scene, leading them to the grim discovery of Dorsey's bullet-riddled body inside McBride's red Nissan Versa. Police were alerted to the slaying on Thursday morning through multiple 911 calls, as detailed in McBride's arrest affidavit. An unidentified caller reported to a 911 dispatcher that a murder had occurred, describing a person "looking in the road cleaning up the blood off the ground and searching for shells." According to the document, the caller identified the alleged killer as "Travis" and revealed the victim's name as "Clint." The caller stated that the perpetrator had dragged the body across the road, placed it in his car, and then left the scene. Another 911 caller, in a separate account, mentioned that the suspect was standing in front of a DeLand address. When pressed for clarity by the 911 dispatcher, the caller began whispering and disclosed that "a murder was committed last night." DeLand is approximately 40 miles north of downtown Orlando. Upon locating McBride, police observed a scratch on his arm and a red mark. McBride claimed these injuries were caused by his dogs, as stated in the document. Simultaneously, another officer spoke with the second 911 caller, who expressed fear of McBride. According to Police Chief Jason Umberger, there was an apparent ongoing dispute between McBride and Dorsey, although the nature of their relationship remains unclear. Witnesses reported McBride's prior threats against Dorsey, with one neighbor recalling a visit where McBride expressed his intent to kill the victim over a dispute involving glass in a jar allegedly meant for his dogs. McBride, despite his profession as an anger management specialist, has a history of legal troubles. His extensive rap sheet includes arrests in 1995 and 1996 for felony aggravated battery, as well as a 2017 arrest for domestic battery by strangulation. Despite these incidents, McBride completed deferred prosecution agreements in some cases. The suspect attended the University of Central Florida, earning degrees in psychology in 2005 and clinical psychology in 2007. McBride previously owned Central Florida Mental Health before establishing Starting Point Mental Health in 2009, emphasizing a commitment to building trusting relationships with clients and addressing a variety of mental health concerns. Travis McBride appeared in court on Friday and did not enter a plea. He is currently held without bond at the Volusia County jail, facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Jan. 6 at 6 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Treasury has announced that the nation's gross national debt has surpassed $34 trillion. The record high comes after Republican lawmakers and the White House agreed to temporarily lift the nation's $31.4 trillion debt limit last year after the government ran up against its legal borrowing capacity and needed to implement “extraordinary measures” to avoid a default. That agreement lasts until January 2025. Congress is gearing up for another funding fight. Most of us struggle with making those New Year's resolutions stick. This year, add some fuel — or even electricity — to your personal improvement fire with cars that can help you see your goals through to the end. Whether you want to get fit or get out, Edmunds picks five vehicles to keep you motivated. On our list are the Toyota GR Corolla, Ford Bronco, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Mercedes-Benz GLB. Four years after the last census, almost a dozen small communities in the Midwest are going to be counted again in hopes of getting more state funding. Eleven municipalities in Illinois and Iowa are the only cities in the U.S. so far to have signed agreements with the U.S. Census Bureau to recount their residents in 2024 and 2025 in a repeat of what happened during the 2020 census. The first year in which the special censuses can be conducted is 2024. The cities' populations have grown so fast in three years that they are leaving state funding on the table by not including the extra growth. Investment guru Warren Buffett topped The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the biggest charitable donations in 2023, with his $541.5 million gift to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his first wife, who died in 2004. The 2023 list of gifts from individuals or their foundations totaled more than $3.5 billion. Four universities received big gifts, along with four scientific research institutes and a health-care system. The other gifts went to a family foundation and a racial justice group. The list has 11 gifts because of ties. Eight of the donors are multibillionaires, and their combined net worth is $305.1 billion. NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has banned vendors from the Brooklyn Bridge. The change ends a bustling market that supplied cheap goods to tourists on the iconic crossing. Police officers were stationed in pairs Wednesday along the mile-long span. The ban is aimed at easing congestion on the bridge's heavily trafficked pedestrian walkway. Sellers acknowledge the bridge has recently been inundated with tabletop businesses selling such items as New York-branded hats and keychains, but the vendors say the city's total ban went too far. Mayor Eric Adams is defending the prohibition as necessary to ensure pedestrian safety and clamp down on what he described as growing disorder. NEW YORK (AP) — A new version of the federal student aid application known as the FAFSA is available for the 2024-2025 school year, but only on a limited basis as the U.S. Department of Education works on a redesign meant to make it easier to apply. That means that the application students can usually fill out starting in October isn't yet available to everyone. The redesign brings major changes such as fewer questions, the ability to list more colleges and availability in more languages. However, students will get their financial aid offers later than usual because the form hasn't been available. A soft launch period opened last week. NEW YORK (AP) — More U.S. hospitals are requiring masks and limiting visitors as health officials face a post-holiday spike in flu and other illnesses. New York City last week instituted a mask mandate for the city's 11 public hospitals. Similar measures were ordered at some hospitals in Los Angeles and Massachusetts. Flu and COVID-19 infections have been increasing for weeks, with high levels of flu-like illness reported in 31 states just before Christmas. Updated national numbers are to be released Friday, but health officials predict infections will grow in many states well into January. Crib cameras are offering a clue to a rare but devastating tragedy — when seemingly healthy young children suddenly die in their sleep and autopsies can't tell why. Similar to SIDS in babies, it's called sudden unexplained death in childhood, or SUDC, when it happens after age 1. In a small study, researchers analyzed video that captured the deaths of seven toddlers and found seizures sometimes play a role. Now they must figure out why. Researchers from NYU Langone Health reported the findings Thursday in the journal Neurology. A Connecticut woman who pushed for expanded access to Vermont's law that allows people who are terminally ill to end their lives has died in Vermont. Lynda Bluestein, who had terminal cancer, ended her life by taking prescribed lethal medication on Thursday. Her husband says her last words were that she was so happy that she didn't have to suffer anymore. The group Compassion & Choices filed a lawsuit against Vermont in 2022 on behalf of Bluestein. She claimed Vermont's residency requirement in its medically assisted suicide law violated the U.S. Constitution. The state settled the case last year, allowing Bluestein and later anyone else in her circumstances to take advantage of the law. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The falling-block video game Tetris has met its match in 13-year-old Willis Gibson. In late December, he became the first player to officially beat the original Nintendo version of the game — by breaking it. Technically, Willis — aka “blue scuti” in the gaming world — made it to what gamers call a “kill screen,” a point where the Tetris code glitches, crashing the game. That might not sound like much of a victory to most people, but it's a highly coveted achievement in the world of video games. And it's a very big deal for Tetris, which has long been described as an “unbeatable” game. NEW YORK (AP) — A small, rare herding dog called the Lancashire heeler is the latest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The organization announced Wednesday that the breed is now eligible for thousands of U.S. dog shows. Lancashire heelers historically were farm helpers that could both drive cattle and rout rats. The dogs are short-legged, long-bodied and active, and owners say contented heelers sometimes pull back their lips in a move that resembles a human smile. The Lancashire heeler is the 201st breed recognized by the AKC. Heelers' history goes back centuries in the United Kingdom, where they're now deemed a “vulnerable native breed” at risk of dying out in their homeland. HANAPEPE, Hawaii (AP) — A salt patch on the island of Kauai is one of the last remaining in all of Hawaii. Salt makers from 22 Native Hawaiian families gather here in the summer months to do the hard work of making paakai or Hawaiian salt. An important part of this cultural and spiritual practice is to give away the salt. It can never be sold. The existence of this salt patch is being threatened by climate change, rising sea levels and pollution. These challenges have shrunk the salt-making season and reduced the quantity of salt produced. But the salt makers are looking for solutions to preserve this unique practice and pass on their knowledge to future generations. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. I'm looking for decades actually. So when I was about 7/8 years old I live in Hiram behind a grocery store that I think was Kroger and close to sparkles I believe. The name of the street was Corley Circle. I hope that's how you spell it. Anyways, around the time of the 93 blizzard, there was a murder, or few that happened a few doors down from me. As a matter of fact the man who killed his family knocked on our door late at night to borrow an ax. We didn't have one so he borrowed one from people on the other side. So he then goes home and kills his wife and either her parents or his. I can't remember. That's the thing though, In all these years I've tried to find information on this story and can't. No matter how I try to look it up. So the rumor was he was caught when he was digging the graves in the backyard. The house sat vacant for years after. I remember neighbor kids would dare you to go look in the windows and in the beginning you could see bloody drag marks down the hall carpet. It was so freaking scary as a kid. As an adult I want to know all the stuff my parents wouldn't tell me about it and now it's been so long my mom only removers the basics. Does this story sound at all familiar around the time of the blizzard? Thanks guys.” Others commented: Rhonda Pentecost Cline “This happened right across the cul de sac from my house. He killed them the night before and his wife called the police, they came out didn't see anything out of the ordinary and left. The next day when he was digging the holes to bury them she called the police again and I believe he had drug one of the bodies out on the deck. It was horrible. My children were 6 and 2 and at our house with there teenage babysitter while this was all going on.” Marilyn Sawyer “At the court house up on the 3rd floor, good through the doors, turn left all the way down the hall to probate records. Walk in and the door on the left is records.. you can go in there and all the newspapers from the 50's are in books.. you can go through there.. there's death records, church records, wills, gun permits etc. you can take photos of everything.. The library in Marietta just east of the square as a Georgia Room.. They have all the Atlanta papers and computers to search what's in what papers. I found several cases here in Paulding with murders going back to 1935 from all the Atlanta papers as that's where I always start first.. newspapers I'd go there.. I'd also go to the police department and get their records. If you need help, I'll be more then happy to dig for you or with you” ChefNuri Thomas “Following this sounds like Dateline special or first 48 “ Melinda Paris “Yikes, he can get out of prison in 9 years!” From the Banned from What's Happening in Paulding Facebook page: Jamie Rickard posted “Wanted to share what other schools are offering. It's a great Thursday to be on a car lot as we talk about Kia's plan for a send-off of the Rio. We also talk about EV's effects on road conditions, as well as consumer preferences when it comes to product placement. Show Notes with links:One of the least expensive new cars on the market, the Kia Rio, is set to be discontinued after the 2023 model year.Rio's sales in 2022 were 26,996, marking a 14% drop, and as of July this year, sales have decreased by another 5%.Kia's Monterrey, Mexico plant, where the Rio is manufactured, is set to be retooled for the production of two small electric vehicles.Light trucks, encompassing minivans, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups, made up 79% of all new U.S. vehicle sales in the first half of 2023.Five Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Amidst the rapid adoption of EVs, a recent UK study raises concerns about their potential impact on road health. Researchers suggest that the added weight of BEVs, especially larger models, could lead to more rapid road wear and increased potholes, challenging existing infrastructure and sparking debates on vehicle taxationU.K. newspaper, the Telegraph, with data from the University of Leeds, reported that BEVs cause up to 2.32 times more wear on roads than ICE vehicles, especially those weighing over 4409 On average, BEVs are heavier by about 687 lbs more due to their batteries. The “fourth power formula” suggests that doubling a vehicle's axle weight can cause 16 times more road damage. As BEVs don't contribute to gas taxes, discussions arise about taxing vehicles based on weight or battery weight. Norway already taxes vehicles at a rate based on their weight.Apart from main roads, residential roads, driveways, garage floors, and public parking garages may also suffer damage from heavier BEVs. The debate on BEV infrastructure needs to consider these aspects in addition to charger availability.A BENlabs survey reveals 52% of U.S. consumers favor TV shows with product placements over traditional ads. This shift comes as ad-free streaming rises and traditional TV ads lose traction.66% of North American viewers ignore TV ads; many divert their attention during commercials; 39% believe TV ads lack relevance and value; 31% find them repetitive.Top brands in movie placements include Apple, Coca-Cola, and Nike; for TV, Apple, Nike, and Dell lead.Neil Saunders, Managing Director at Globaldata, noted, “Companies like Amazon properly monetize it on their Prime Video service with the X-ray feature which suggests products based on what characters are wearing, etc.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Tuesday is coming in hot as we talk about the very present reality of used car leasing. We also talk about the last remaining sub-$20k vehicle as well as the end of a Netflix customer experience that paved the way for streaming as we know it. Show Notes with links:Used car leasing has always been an interesting idea, but carried too many risks. It's hard enough to predict the residual value of a new vehicle, alone a 4-5 year old vehicle. But predictive analytics combined with today's wild market is helping used car leasing gain traction.Used car leasing has the opportunity to protect a lender's risk profile and support a customer in a time where affordability is a major consumer concern.Rusty West, CEO of MarketScan, believes used-car leasing can alleviate the burden of consumers taking large, high-interest loans.“If we continue to shove customers into 84-month and 96-month auto contracts, then we are going to create a difficult environment,” West says. “We must get back to what's good for the whole automotive ecosystem. Focus on getting back to a healthy transaction.”“Used-car leasing remains in the minority, but it is gaining traction. We think we figured it out. Now it's a question of getting the word out.” - Mark Chandler, Credit Union Leasing of America. As the US auto market evolves, the once common sub-$20,000 new car is nearing extinction. While SUVs and trucks dominate American choices, the compact Mitsubishi Mirage holds the title as the last car below this price point. The Mirage is the last new vehicle priced under $20,000, but Mitsubishi will be discontinuing the model over the next few yearsFive Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Remember when Netflix was just a DVD mailing service? Well, as that part of its business ends, the entertainment giant is giving a little extra love to that customer base and will send subscribers up to 10 DVDs of their choice. The final mailing will be on September 29th and current DVD subscribers can choose up to 10 extra titles to be included. Normally, customers are allowed only 8 discs.Since shipping DVDs began in March of 1998, Netflix says it has mailed out more than 5 billion discs to more than 40 million customers.Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that running the business had become increasingly difficult as the number of customers who still rented physical movies continues to shrink. “Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming,” he said. Those discs will still have to be returned apparently, with returns accepted until October 27, 2023.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

You just passed your driving test and you're ready to hit the open road with new wheels. Before you start looking for your first car, you need to consider all the costs of auto ownership. Links: Visit Car Max, Car Gurus, AutoTrader to search for cars Try using Triangle's AutoSmart tool to find your next car Check out Triangle's current vehicle rates Follow our podcast Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast. New drivers are excited about the newfound freedom that comes with a drivers' license, but to really experience true liberation you have to have your own vehicle. We just went through an auto purchase with my 18-year-old daughter who needed a car for college. Here's what we found out: the sticker price is only the beginning. Once you know your budget, you can do online searches through third-party apps like CarMax, CarGuru, AutoTrader—the list goes on and on. I would tell you it's a quick search, but it's not. We spent weeks searching for the right vehicle online. I knew the make and model of the car we were looking for and, with some online searching, I soon realized my budget was unrealistic unless I wanted an older vehicle or one with a lot of miles. When I mentioned that the search results were producing vehicles from three states away, my older daughter suggested I look at some used car lots in a town nearby—this area is notorious for small used car dealerships. I knew I didn't want to drive 5 hours to look at a car I might not buy, so I searched used car dealerships in that town. This search produced a list of eight used car dealerships. At this point, I just went to each dealerships' website to see what they had for inventory. We found the perfect car and made an appointment to look at it. The following day we arrived after school and were notified the car had already been sold. While we disappointed, we were optimistic we could find a good car with this dealer. My daughter and I were invited to walk the lot to see if there was another vehicle that would be a good fit for her. We found it and took it for a test drive! Now here's where it gets interesting. The sticker price for the car was $8,500. The dealership fee (which is a fee the dealership must pay to our state is $250) so now the price is $8,750. I have purchased three cars within the past two years and every dealership, no matter the size, must comply with this fee, which means it's passed on to you, the consumer. If you buy from a private seller, you shouldn't have this additional cost. Before we left the lot, we added insurance on the car. I made a quick call to my insurance company, which is national insurance provider, and added the car to my policy. There was an immediate payment due of $224, which is part of the prorated premium for the current insurance period. The next step is to register your car. This is a trip to the DMV, which I would pay $1000 for someone to do for me; actually, that's an exaggeration, I would pay someone at least $100. In any case, you don't have to pay anyone to go to your local DMV, but you do need to register your car. The cost of registration varies and is based upon the age and weight of your vehicle. I'm not aware of the actual formula, but for my daughters 2016 Nissan Versa sedan the registration cost for state and city was $180. For newer, heavier vehicles, like a 2022 pickup, the registration costs will be much higher. You will also need to have your car inspected, which is about $50 depending on where you live and where you have your inspections done. If you're buying a car from a dealer, the dealership will do the inspection, so the vehicle has an updated inspection sticker. OK, so let's add up our numbers: price of car ($8,500), plus dealership fee ($250), plus insurance ($224), plus registration ($180), plus inspection ($50) is $9,204. Since my daughter's car had the inspection sticker, the true cost of purchasing her car was $9,154 -- $654 above the sticker price. This may or may not be important, depending upon your income or budget, but these costs are something to remember and consider before you purchase that first car. That's today's Money Tip. While the family of Beverly J. Logan continues to pray for her safe return, investigators continue to implore anyone who knows anything about her whereabouts to give them a call. The 32-year-old mother has been missing since Jan. 25, when she was last seen by family on Ross Lane, just outside the Belleville city limit in unincorporated St. Clair Township. Chelsea Chapman, a close family friend, said it is not like Logan to walk away from family without making contact. “She was last in possession of a rented blue Nissan Versa with Alabama license CH1006,” Fleshren said. “We are actively trying to make contact with Ms. Logan to locate her and confirm her safety.” Police would not say if foul play is expected or if Logan is potentially in danger. Steve-O is making a big name for himself on YouTube these days as well as a return to Jackass hitting the big screens with Jackass Forever dropping in September of 2021. His 20 plus years in Hollywood have afforded him some luxury purchases like his $1.1 Million dollars Beachwood Canyon Home. There is also his Wild Ride Podcast camper van which is a huge step up from the 2009 Nissan Versa he was driving for years while living it up in Hollywood. He's also been able to afford himself a plethora of tattoos and some much-needed veneers. Cruising the internet the most popular net worth result for Steve O is $2.5 Million dollars but we got a feeling that this is really on the low end. Johnny Knoxville is reportedly worth $75 Million so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Steve O would be sitting on so little in the bank. With that said, researching this video we found out a ton of information about how little Steve O was paid during his early years working as a clown and during the initial years of Jackass while it was on MTV. He also opened up to Steve Will Do It on his podcast about how his money was miss managed during his early years of fame. We got lot's to get through taking a look at Steve-O's financial come up and if you want us to make more videos like this on other members of the Jackass crew be sure to let us know in the comments down below.
This is the audio version of a blog post I wrote in May 2021.Everyone eventually reaches a point in life where the need to question assumptions arises; this may manifest in different ways at different points in life. Whenever I pass the apartment nearby my girlfriend's house where the teenager loudly plays the electric guitar, I like to joke, “You don't understand me, mom!” My girlfriend says the teenager and the mother actually seem to get along quite well.A lot of people might look around in their twenties and say, “Why are all these people doing this?” Or, they might pose this question's twin sibling, “Why am I not?” Cultures, beliefs, assumptions evolve over decades, centuries, millennia. The end result for beings who can think and feel is, ultimately, the perpetuation of the human race, the reward of evolution. So, if you feel like something is “missing” or if you aren't happy, maybe it's time to take a step back and evaluate, because evolution doesn't necessarily reward us with happiness.Karen Horney was a psychoanalyst. I, decidedly, am not, nor am I a psychologist or a therapist; I'm just a person trying to figure things out. I excitedly read Karen Horney's 1950 book Neurosis and Human Growth after finding it as a footnote in another book by a social psychologist named Carol Tavris (I would recommend both her books Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion and Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me)). I really liked Neurosis and Human Growth, though I am told by Dr. Tavris, whom I emailed about it, that psychoanalysis has fallen out of vogue and is quite dated. But, I still find a number of things Ms. Horney has to say to be extremely compelling. She talks about our expectations of life, of others, and of ourselves, dubbing this, “The Tyranny of the Should.” This is how things “should” be, as we esteem them, as individuals, societies, and cultures; I “should” be doing this, you “should” be doing that, you “should” be treating me a certain way. She illustrates what she calls a “neurotic claim” (Dr. Tavris also informed me psychology students today would no longer use the word “neurosis”) with an example about a train not being available when she wants to take it, and the resulting frustration that can result. The train “should” be available at 2:30PM, when I want to take it; how stupid that it is not available then! Certainly some injustices in our day-to-day life are more grave than others, but when you learn to see how you think about little things such as the dawdling pedestrian crossing the road or the driver who is having a hard time parallel parking, you can start to calm down a bit and go through life giving other parties a bit more benefit of the doubt.People often assume they are omniscient, as any connoisseur of Fox News or CNN might notice. We think we have all available facts, that if you just do X, Y, and Z, life will fall into place, and a magical happiness and utopia will result. And in a lot of ways, if you do the things you “should” do, you might be setting yourself up for success. But, evolution didn't reward human happiness; it rewarded the conditions that led to seven billion humans on Earth, a number that has increased over 10-fold in the last 500 years. If you've ever been to the natural history museum, humans are really old;like hundreds of thousands of years old. So, you don't have to be a math whiz to gather that modernity and civilization are, relatively speaking, kind of a new thing. In light of this, if you are feeling unsatisfied, unfulfilled, unhappy, maybe that, actually, makes quite a bit of sense. Modernity isn't quite as soul-crushing as history was, so we have a lot more time to think, take it easy, and ponder what exactly is going on. If you are feeling “something is missing,” maybe a personal re-evaluation of your philosophy of life, your “shoulds,” so to speak, is in order. My friends are all doctors, lawyers, engineers, are having children, have expensive real estate, and here I am holding a uniform from Hot Dog on a Stick and I live with my parents. To a certain extent, a lot of “should” can put humans in a place where they can achieve happiness; it is easier to be happy when you have a little extra money in the bank. But if you become addicted to a certain kind of lifestyle, that potential for lasting and intrinsic happiness can morph into a form of slavery, and then you're stuck making boat payments. To be sure, many people genuinely like having a boat, others maybe would be just as happy without one. I am sure there are just as many satisfied and happy parents as there are parents who wished (or think they wished) they had never had children; and surely their answers will differ ten and twenty and forty years from now. Different things have different meanings for different people; what do you want your life to mean for you?Jonathan Haidt and Carl Rogers both point out how inescapably social creatures humans are; if we did not care what others thought, we would be sociopaths. But, as you get older, you can start to question some of the assumptions that are core to our historical human function. Yes, it is impolite and rude to fart loudly on the subway, and we really ought not to shoot other people in the head for cutting us off in traffic; I think most people, on any given day, would feel these to be simple truths. But humans are no longer on the savanna with prehistoric creatures, and a lot of the impulses and feelings we evolved with have overstayed their practical welcome. You might start to question, as you get older, the up-keeping of appearances, and start to do the things that you want to do. Social isolation can be lonely, but it is fair to assume we will still have friends and be allowed at the grocery store if we pull up in a Nissan Versa instead of a BMW. Carl Rogers said, “When an activity feels as though it is valuable or worth doing, it is worth doing... I have never regretted moving in directions which ‘felt right,' even though I have often felt lonely or foolish at the time.”Learning to trust what you want from life doesn't have to mean a descent into booze-fueled nihilism coupled with a fast car and lots of drugs. A lot of the post-WWII pop-psychologists like to talk about listening to your inner dictates, being your true self, self-realization, so on and so forth. What they're really saying is that you need to do some things with your life that you genuinely want to do. Rob Kurzban is a psychologist who writes about the “modular mind,” and how we evolved with different brain “modules” that achieve certain evolutionary goals; there is no “self” in there, in our brains, running the show. This is another way of saying that all of the potential things which could be considered humanly good do not necessarily add up to all being compatible. There is no final life solution. Life has paradoxes. There is nuance. And, there are tradeoffs. What do you want from life? What do you want from the World? These are big questions. Humans are sexually reproductive creatures. If you want the pretty girl, a BMW might help. Others will tell you that if you are relying on the fancy car to get the girl, you're getting the “wrong” kind of girl. Do you want to start a family? If you aren't sure, maybe you should put the idea on ice until you've better sorted out your personal life philosophy. We have some modern society-wide assumptions that go like this; you should go to college, you should have nice stuff, you should have a family, and you should get a good job. And if you want things from the world, and from other people, a lot of these things will be mutually complementary.I did all of the things. I was married at 23, I had a mortgage not much later, and a graduate degree in marketing. And all I wanted to do was to sock away enough money so that we could pay off the mortgage so that I could “stop working.” I felt this deep hatred for my work, which for me was a career in internet marketing that eventually became somewhat lucrative. Eventually, couples therapy failed, my marriage went kaput, and I entered a fumbling figuring-myself-out in my late twenties; things people like my own parents had to figure out while being married to one another and having two young children. And it took about ten years of fumbling and doing the same thing until I finally had saved enough money to say I could quit my job, if not forever, at least for a good long while. I had had enough and wanted to embark on “something else.”My something else wound up entailing a lot of reading. I started with “Winners Take All” by Anand Giridharadas. I read a lot of non-fiction books, books about politics, something which I had an undergraduate degree in and had always been interested in. Then I found my way from political books to pop-psychology books, since politics involves people, as well as philosophy. I eventually wound my way to literature, having previously deemed the genre of fiction as mind-smut, and non-fiction as the way one learns things. And in the course of all this reading, I accidentally found my own, better, personal philosophy of life, and realized some life lessons of my own.Dostoevsky, a Russian literature author, pointed out that existence is in fact slavery, and while this sounds like a bleak assessment on the surface, it is objectively true, in a sense. We have to eat, thus, we need to get food; it so happens that now food comes from the store and not from the savanna. I think a lot of the modern discontent which exists is a rejection of this fact, a desire to spit in its face, the dislike of reality. Philosopher Karl Popper wrote of, “a deepfelt dissatisfaction with a world which does not, and cannot, live up to our moral ideas and to our dreams of perfection... a reaction against the strain of our civilization and its demand for personal responsibility.” The “Closed Society” of history is gone; our roles are not predestined, we must find them for ourselves. Humans have capacities and need to use them. We want to work, even if it's not what we think of as “work,” as George Orwell pointed out. A lot of political philosophy revolves about how we will re-make the World to somehow better link what we want to do with our lives versus what we must do economically in the World that has evolved. This usually involves the bloody death of those deemed to be evil. Suffice it to say, a paradox of “work” exists. There might be some fortunate people who find productive work which is both economically and personally rewarding. I imagine things like physical therapist or medical doctor to be amongst these professions. I cannot say what it is like since my profession is on the more soul-sucking/evil end of things. But, I have come to embrace that which provides me with a roof over my head, food in the fridge, and have learned to better appreciate my fortune. Not all things which are economically productive in life are going to be rewarding, and vice versa; this is an irresolvable conflict in a society which has any form of freedom. Ultimately, the question of whether you get to lead a happy life or not, resides with you. People adopt philosophies of life, and if your current life philosophy is coming up short; you need to figure out a new one. Australian “spirit master” Barry Long said, “The truth is you are responsible for your life. If you're not responsible, it's not your life; and that's absurd. Similarly, if you blame something else for what happens to you, you're giving up responsibility by giving it to others. To be responsible is to be responsible for everything that happens to you, unfolding as your life. Indeed, there are continual difficulties you have to face. They may seem to have been caused by other agencies. But you have to do your best to sort them out. That's life.”I never wanted to have a family because I saw it as an elongation of my slavery, manufacturing something which needed to be supported via doing those things I already hated doing so much. Perhaps it is a decision that I will regret in older age, though I think I have mostly moved passed living with regrets. I quit my job to do what “I wanted to do,” and that was to think about “fixing” politics, and to try to help people, somehow. I came to realize one of the best ways I could do something to “help people” was to lend financial assistance to young children in my own extended family who had the misfortune of being born with no fathers in the picture and are being raised by their grandmother; this very same something that I had previously found to be a very frustrating financial burden. The idea that somehow people can be okay with bringing children into the world and then not loving or taking care of them has always been deeply troubling to me; I always viewed having children as an enormous responsibility. So, I can do what I can to try to right this wrong, however inadequate.Leo Tolstoy's character Pierre, near the end of War and Peace, gave good color to the need for perspective in life. As a political prisoner of the invaders from Napoleonic France in his own native Russia, he discovers the Aurelian truth that all is perspective. Pierre suffers from blisters on his feet from marching as a prisoner of war. Tolstoy writes, “While imprisoned in the shed Pierre had learned not with his intellect but with his whole being, by life itself, that man is created for happiness, that happiness is within him, in the satisfaction of simple human needs, and that all unhappiness arises not from privation but from superfluity. And now during these last three weeks of the march he had learned still another new, consolatory truth — that nothing in this world is terrible. He had learned that as there is no condition in which man can be happy and entirely free, so there is no condition in which he need be unhappy and lack freedom. He learned that suffering and freedom have their limits and that those limits are very near together; that the person in a bed of roses with one crumpled petal suffered as keenly as he now... and that when he had put on tight dancing shoes he had suffered just as he did now when he walked with bare feet that were covered with sores... He discovered that when he had married his wife — of his own free will as it had seemed to him — he had been no more free than now when they locked him up at night in a stable. Of all that he himself subsequently termed his sufferings, but which at the time he scarcely felt, the worst was the state of his bare, raw, and scab-covered feet. (The horseflesh was appetizing and nourishing, the saltpeter flavor of the gunpowder they used instead of salt was even pleasant; there was no great cold, it was always warm walking in the daytime, and at night there were the campfires; the lice that devoured him warmed his body.) The one thing that was at first hard to bear was his feet.”Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and author of Man's Search For Meaning, implores his reader to ask, what does life demand of you. Not to ask, what is the meaning of life. Because, the meaning of life cannot be known to humans. So, we must make our own meaning. Our greatest freedom is the choice of how to respond to life. The determinists, those who think all is pre-ordained and nothing can be changed, would say we do not even have this freedom. But if we do not have this freedom, why should we live?In my quest to do “something else” with my life, I strangely find myself back in a similar place, doing internet marketing part-time so that I can fulfill financial obligations to help my family. But I do not think of it as I thought of it before. I can think of no better use of my time to contribute, financially and spiritually, to two young children in my own family with no fathers. I still do not like my line of work, not genuinely, but it provides me with financial freedom and time to write things such as this.People make decisions. A lot of people choose prisons of their own making, maybe inadvertently, maybe on purpose. The determinist says people don't make decisions, “[W]ith them one is always a ‘victim of the environment'--and nothing else!” Are our own abilities to evaluate our lives a product of our social environment? It surely plays a role, but we must play the cards we are dealt. If you can learn to trust yourself, your “inner dictates,” a sea of anxiety and self-mistrust can begin to wash away, in time, and you can begin to live your life more in accordance with what you think you should do. I believe this because I feel it myself; I recognize my good psychological fortune in having been raised by two loving parents in a small rural Ivy League town. I like to have time to ride my bicycle and read books; riding my bike brings me great joy, and provides me with a source of happiness. Helping my family brings me a source of meaning, and one day I'd like to try to help others figure out how to better succeed at life in ways that I have. I do not accept that the only way to contribute to humanity is to have children, that there is something wrong with me because I am in my late 30s, have no car, and live with a cat. I am not here on Earth to somehow preserve someone else's standards for living. This is a public episode.
