Shoot us a Text.Episode #1057: Nissan eyes a fire sale to survive, Trump's tariff plan hits legal trouble, and GM claims Canada's EV crown from Tesla—at least for now.Show Notes with links:As CEO Ivan Espinosa wraps up his first quarter in charge, Nissan's financial stability hangs in the balance, with a massive debt wall looming and rumors of a fire sale to raise cash.Nissan has $5.12 billion in debt due in 2026 and plans to refinance up to $4.15 billion of that.Espinosa's turnaround strategy involves slashing 20,000 jobs, closing seven global factories, and cutting $3.46 billion in costs by 2028.To free up capital, Nissan may liquidate high-value assets—including its stake in Renault, prime real estate in Japan, and even its iconic Yokohama headquarters, which could be sold and leased back. With nearly half of its U.S. sales coming from imports, Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier is leading a $2B cost-cutting push focused on boosting retail sales, margins, and managing tariff risk.“We are not yet at the stage where we have to do something desperate,” said a board source.A federal court ruled Trump's use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs was illegal—but for now, those tariffs remain while the legal battle unfolds. The U.S. Court of International Trade said Trump exceeded authority under the IEEPA, targeting tariffs not tied to a valid national emergency.IEEPA-based tariffs targeted a wide range of imported consumer goods not tied to national security—covering electronics, clothing, and some vehicle accessories. The ruling gave the government 10 days to unwind the tariffs, but an appeals court temporarily paused that order.Tariffs under Section 232—covering cars, parts, steel, and aluminum—remain, keeping vehicle prices elevated.Retailers like Walmart warn prices may rise further, though Trump has publicly told them to “eat the tariffs.”GM claimed the top EV spot in Canada after more than doubling its electric vehicle sales in Q1, driven by fresh model launches and Tesla's sharp drop.GM sold 5,750 EVs in Q1, led by the Chevy Equinox EV and new Cadillac OPTIQ, outpacing Tesla's volume.Silverado EV and Hummer EV variants also contributed, with Hummer Pickup sales up 232%.Tesla's registrations in Quebec plunged 87%, impacted by paused EV rebates at both federal and provincial levels.Despite year-over-year gains, GM's Q1 total is well off the 15,000 units sold in Q4 2024.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Do we love different cars in different life situations? In this episode, Nick rediscovers his love for skiing and how it has changed his perspective on cars. Hunter takes a deep dive into Thailand—learning some unexpected facts and admiring the cool/terrible cars (and scooters!) that never make it to the U.S. We also discuss how modern technology is making life (and driving) too easy, making people lazier and less connected to their cars. Finally, we call out some of the most embarrassing cars you can currently buy—vehicles that are overpriced, purposeless, and all about making a statement instead of being genuinely great. If you own a Hummer EV, Cybertruck, or an SUV coupé, we apologize in advance. Oh, and Hunter drove some cars. As usual. #Podcast #CarTalk #AutomotiveNews #Cybertruck #HummerEV #SUV #Driving #TechGoneTooFar #ThailandCars #Skiing #CarCulture

Rising from the ashes of the defunct Hummer brand, the team at GMC gave the oversized off-roader a new lease on life as a model in its lineup. Leaning into Hummer's legacy, this GMC Hummer is appropriately large and carries a hefty price tag. Unlike its stand-alone predecessor, the reborn GMC Hummer showcased GM's massive Ultium battery-electric platform and previewed the rollout of the company's larger battery-electric offerings. Packing a 205 kWh battery pack underneath its shell. This large battery pack feeds either two or three electric motors, depending on how your rig is configured. In top trim, GMC says the Hummer EV throws 1,000 hp and over 1,200 lv-ft of torque toward the wheels. This potent power unit can shuffle this nearly five-ton pickup truck to 60 mph in an astounding 3.3 seconds. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Mark Vaughn climbs behind the wheel of a 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the GMC Hummer EV and highlights some of his favorite features and what it's like to experience in person. Later in the show, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the reborn Hummer brand, using the Hummer EV pickup as a pickup, and more. Closing the show, the pair try to wrap their heads around this massive EV.

Wednesday and wheels up for us as we delve deep into Colorado's controversial proposal to charge owners of large, pedestrian-unfriendly vehicles. We also unpack the surge of affordable EV leases under $400 a month and the impact of the expanded UAW strike on GM and Stellantis. Not long after GM announced their Q3 earnings the UAW has initiated a strike at General Motors' high-profit SUV plant in Texas, impacting the production of key models and deepening the financial blow to the Detroit 35,000 workers at GM's Arlington Assembly in Texas were ordered to strike by UAW President Shawn Fain. This plant manufactures the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.UAW President Shawn Fain said "Another record quarter, another record year. As we've said for months, record profits equal record contracts. It's time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share."GM responded by expressing disappointment in the UAW's decision, highlighting that they had increased their previous proposal's value to the union by 25% just last week. The UAW's strike expansion also affected Stellantis' profitable Sterling Heights Assembly in Michigan yesterday, which produces Ram 1500 pickups.A proposed bill in Colorado seeks to introduce a “vulnerable road user protection registration fee” for heavier vehicles, with the intent to funnel the revenue into pedestrian and bike safety projects. The fee aims to generate around $20 million annually. However, even a 9,000-lb vehicle like the Hummer EV would only be subjected to an extra fee of $29.90 each year. The fee will only be charged Colorado's 12 most populated counties, where most pedestrian and bicycle accidents occur.State Senator Lisa Cutter said that “Data shows us that higher vehicle weights directly correlate with vulnerable road user deaths. It just makes sense to tie funding to that."Electric vehicles won't be exemptrom the registration fee.In 2024, Washington D.C. will raise registration fees based on weight: from $155 to $500 for over 6k lbs, from $155 to $250 for over 5k lbs, and from $115 to $175 for 3500-5k lbsA range of automakers are now offering electric vehicle leases for under $400 a month, making EVs more accessible to the average consumer and ramping up competition in the market.Multiple automakers including Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia are offering leases for electric vehicles like the 2023 Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Kia Niro EV for under $400 per month. Some buyers are utilizing a "1-day lease" The lease tax "loophole" allows all vehicles to access benefits, irrespective of the $7,500 IRA tax credit income eligibility. Lease it for one day, they buy out the lease. Ralph spends the entire hour with co-founder of RootsAction.org and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy, Norman Solomon, to discuss his latest book, “War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine,” which examines how our “military-industrial-media-intelligence complex” conspires to suppress the truth about war.Norman Solomon is co-founder of RootsAction.org and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy. He is the author of War Made Easy, Made Love, Got War, and his newest book, War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine. The tacit motto of huge media outlets like the New York Times is: Being pro-war means never having to say you're sorry. If a journalist or a media outlet is in favor of the US engaging in war, that is couched as “objective.” If a journalist (such as Phil Donahue on MSNBC) in the leadup to the war even raises questions, serious questions critical of an impending invasion or ongoing US war then that's considered “biased.”Norman SolomonThese wars are treated as though they aren't wars. That they don't exist. That “there's nothing to see here, folks!” Because we say so. We have our own criteria. And part of that is the jingoism and the nationalism and the racism that says if the people at the other end of US firepower don't look like us, are not in a country aligned with us, then we don't think there's really a reason to consider it a major problem. It's only a problem when Americans are dying.Norman SolomonThis was a real sociocide—thousands and thousands of bombs and missiles dropped on Iraq. And here's the New York Times, being fed by one of their reporters Judith Miller total lies about Saddam importing uranium from Niger and Africa and other falsehoods that made page one in the New York Times. What is clearly probably its darkest journalistic chapter… There doesn't seem to be anything learned today. They could just as well do it today against another country.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard1. On Wednesday, The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the online retailer “tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions [for Amazon Prime] without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money,” according to FTC Chair Lina Khan. Khan added “These manipulative tactics harm consumers and law-abiding businesses alike.” According to internal documents “Amazon named [the cancellation] process ‘Iliad,'…refer[ing] to Homer's epic about the long, arduous Trojan War.” More about this lawsuit is available at the Washington Post.2. As the Teamsters continue to negotiate for a better deal with UPS, the membership has voted overwhelmingly to approve a strike. This vote – which passed with 97 percent support – gives the union “maximum leverage to win demands at the bargaining table,” according to the union's statement. The statement goes on to note that the Teamsters represent more than 340,000 UPS package delivery drivers and warehouse logistics workers nationwide. Teamsters president Sean O'Brien added “The strongest leverage our members have is their labor and they are prepared to withhold it to ensure UPS acts accordingly.”3. For the fist time since 2019, the Democratic-controlled Senate Banking committee will hold a “mark-up” session on a bill – a key step toward enacting any legislation. This bill – sponsored by Senators Sherrod Brown, who chairs the committee, and Tim Scott of South Carolina – seeks to claw back excessive compensation from executives at failed banks and penalize them for misconduct. This legislation was almost certainly drafted in response to the failure of Silicon Valley Bank. The draft text of this bill is available at Punchbowl News.4. The American Prospect reports that, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, Tesla's “Full Self Driving” or FSD has led to at least 736 crashes – causing 17 fatalities – since 2021. Mile for mile, Tesla's FSD system is “likely…ten times more dangerous at driving than humans.”5. Leaving aside self-driving, a CBS News report sheds light on new dangers associated with electric vehicles. “Their batteries make the vehicles heavier, offering better protection to the passengers inside, but that extra weight — hundreds to even thousands of pounds — has traffic safety advocates concerned about the potential risk to other drivers.” To give some perspective on how heavy these vehicles are, “GMC's Hummer EV weighs more than 9,000 pounds…more than 3,000 pounds heavier than the GMC's full-size pickup. The Hummer EV's battery alone weighs about the same as a Toyota Corolla.”6. The Washington Post reports that the strike at Insider magazine, the “longest ever [strike] in digital media,” has ended. The new deal raises the minimum salary for Insider staff and prevents any further layoffs this year, along with an immediate 3.5 percent raise upon ratification of the contract. The strikers got a boost in public support when the editor-in-chief was filmed “tearing down fliers bearing his face with the phrase, “Have you seen this millionaire?”' Insider, formerly Business Insider, was acquired by German media conglomerate Axel-Springer in 2015; Axel-Springer's later acquisition of POLITICO was covered in the first edition of the Capitol Hill Citizen.7. Yahoo Finance reports that, in a major reversal, Shell plans to “[pivot] back to oil to win over investors.” The company will forego its goal to reduce oil outputs by 1-2% each year, and its CEO Wael Sawan emphasized that “shift[ing] to low-carbon businesses cannot come at the expense of profits.” No word yet on whether life on planet Earth can come at the expense of corporate profits.8. This month, American troops will begin arriving in Peru, where they will be stationed until the end of the year. These troops, invited by the wildly unpopular Peruvian Congress and unelected president Dina Boluarte, are charged with “preparing Peru's intelligence command for “joint special operations.” The timing of this arrival is notable; while protests against the antidemocratic Peruvian government peaked in February, resulting in 70 deaths, a new rash of protests are planned for July. This from CounterPunch.9. The Catholic News Agency reports that a restaurant in Sacramento, California “had an individual impersonate a priest to encourage employees to confess their “sins” against their employer,” – the catch? He wasn't a priest at all. The Department of Labor called this “among the most shameless” of employee intimidation methods they'd ever seen. In addition to the priest fiasco, investigators said the restaurant “denied overtime pay to employees and illegally paid managers from the employee tip pool….[and] threatened employees with retaliation and immigration-related consequences for cooperating with investigators.” The employer has agreed to pay $70,000 in back wages and $70,000 in damages to 35 employees, as well as $5,000 in civil penalties to the Department of Labor.10. Daniel Ellsberg, the legendary whistleblower who exposed the lies being fed to the American people regarding the Vietnam War via the Pentagon Papers, has passed away. He was 92. Ellsberg, who had been in hospice following a diagnosis of inoperable pancreatic cancer, wrote a final note in March. This note mostly focused on the nuclear peril posed by the war in Ukraine, but the last few lines should be repeated here:“I'm happy to know that millions of people–including all those friends and comrades to whom I address this message!–have the wisdom, the dedication and the moral courage to carry on with these causes, and to work unceasingly for the survival of our planet and its creatures.I'm enormously grateful to have had the privilege of knowing and working with such people, past and present. That's among the most treasured aspects of my very privileged and very lucky life. I want to thank you all for the love and support you have given me in so many ways. Your dedication, courage, and determination to act have inspired and sustained my own efforts. My wish for you is that at the end of your days you will feel as much joy and gratitude as I do now.Love, Dan” Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Since FTX could invest in FDIC Insured banks, why can't the drug cartels? Plus, the lie of green energy in one, single photo - Zach Abraham joins! When a single picture can put the lie to your movement--in this case, “green electric vehicles”--your entire movement is a lie. When FTX, a clearly shady, pretty obviously scammy cyber-currency firm located in the Bahamas can invest made-up money in an FDIC insured bank, why would we think the drug cartels and other terrorist groups are not doing the same? Zach Abraham joins and somehow gets me--Todd--to tell one of my favorite stories of narrowly avoiding being killed by the mob. What does God say?We live in an age when politics and finance have become faux-gods to so many. But, why? Could it be that, because we were designed to seek God, in our sick culture, people prefer their fake gods of human power? We are not the first age to see people make fake-gods:Acts 17: 22-2722 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.'] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.' Proud member of The Party, Visiting Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, focused on mobility, cities & tech. Words in @CityLab, @Slate, @TheAtlantic: “Biden is giving free publicity to the Hummer EV, a 4.5-ton behemoth so inefficient that it pollutes more per mile than a *gas-powered* sedan.”
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/18/23): 3:05pm- The winner of a local school board race in Monmouth County, New Jersey has been changed after it was discovered that there were multiple electronic voting machine errors. After investigating the tabulating irregularities, it was determined that Jeffrey Weinstein defeated Steve Clayton by a single vote. 3:10pm- Earlier in the week, Springfield Township in Montgomery County voted to ban the “Thin Blue Line” logo from its government buildings. According to a CBS3 news report, one member of the Board of Commissioners even compared the logo to the Confederate Flag. 3:25pm- According to a Wall Street Journal report, “[t]he Justice Department considered having FBI agents monitor a search by President Biden's lawyers for classified documents at his homes but decided against it.” 3:30pm- During her Wednesday press briefing, White House Press Secretary refused to directly answer questions about why there wasn't a visitor log for President Joe Biden's Delaware homes considering how frequently he works from home. 3:40pm- According to a report from Jessica Chasmar at Fox News, President Joe Biden “met with at least 14 of Hunter Biden's business associates while he was vice president in the Obama White House, casting further doubt on the president's repeated claims that he had no knowledge of his son's foreign business dealings.” The report contradicts President Biden's 2019 statement—when he vociferously stated he had never met with any of Hunter Biden's business associates. 4:00pm- Fox News White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich questioned Karin Jean-Pierre about whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) or White House would be investigating possible national security risks to President Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents. Unsurprisingly, Jean-Pierre declined to answer the question and instead referred reporters to the DOJ—which, according to several reporters, is also reluctant to provide comprehensive answers. 4:25pm- On Twitter, billionaire Elon Musk wrote, the World Economic Forum “is increasingly becoming an unelected world government that the people never asked for and don't want.” Panelists during one of the WEF's meetings predicted that there could soon be a catastrophic cyber attack. 4:35pm- Eli Lake—Contributing Editor at Commentary Magazine & Host of The Reeducation Podcast—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest article, “American Nomenklatura.” In the piece, Lake writes of social media's content moderators and the role they play according to revelations in the “Twitter File” releases: “In just a few short years, this nomenklatura has come to constitute an implicit ruling class on the Internet, one that collectively determines what information and news sources the rest of us should see on major platforms. Talk about ‘free speech' and ‘the First Amendment' may actually be beside the point here. The Twitter that Musk bought was part of a larger machine—one that attempts to shape conversations online by amplifying, muzzling, and occasionally banning participants who run afoul of its dogma.” You can read the full article at: https://www.commentary.org/articles/eli-lake/twitter-files-reveal-american-nomenklatura/ 4:50pm- On Tuesday night, Flyers' defenseman Ivan Provorov chose not to participate in pre-game warmups—citing a reluctance to wear rainbow-colored “Pride Night” gear. Speaking with the press after the game, Provorov stated “I respect everybody. I respect everybody's choices…my choice is to stay true to myself and to my religion.” Despite his explanation, sports journalists from outlets like Sports Illustrated and The Athletic expressed outrage over his decision not to wear “Pride Night” equipment. 5:00pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Research Fellow for Regional Economics in the Center for Data Analysis at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the expectation that the United States will hit the debt ceiling on Thursday. In a letter to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned, “[f]ailure to meet the government's obligations would cause irreparable harm to the U.S. economy, the livelihoods of all Americans, and global financial stability.” Meanwhile, Congressman James Comer (R-TN) told Jake Tapper that “our national debt is one of the biggest threats to our national security.” So, who is right? Dr. Antoni breaks it all down. 5:10pm- During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, former Vice President Al Gore stated that we aren't doing enough to combat climate change and, consequently, we are “boiling the ocean.” PLUS Rich and Matt obtain exclusive audio from the elites in Davos… 5:25pm- In an interview from October 2022, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab stated that the “future” is a global economy that embraces “stakeholder capitalism.” In fact, Schwab wrote the book on stakeholder capitalism: “Stakeholder Capitalism: A Global Economy the Works for Progress, People and Planet.” 5:50pm- A man on social media discovers it will take 5-days to charge his brand-new Hummer EV… 5:55pm- President Joe Biden ordered a cheeseburger for lunch—and The Washington Post wants you to know all about it. 6:15pm- James Varney—Writer at RealClearInvestigations—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to talk about his latest editorial, “Shopping Spree 101: How Refunds of Federal Loan Overpayments Leave Student Borrowers with Your Money to Burn.” 6:25pm- Zeoli is preempted for sports!

This week Marques sits down to chat with Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything. Yes, his name is Zack, not Jerry. They talk about the beginnings of how the name came about before diving into the Hummer EV project, how Zack gets devices for his videos, and the Not A Wheelchair project. Of course, we end up with A Race to Z to see how fast Zack can type the alphabet.
