XVIII. The FamilyGod has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption.Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God's unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race. The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation.Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord. Parents are to demonstrate to their children God's pattern for marriage. Parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values and to lead them, through consistent lifestyle example and loving discipline, to make choices based on biblical truth. After briefly discussing the "bitcoin bubble" and Judge Roy Moore's election loss, Bob airs part of Matt Slick's opening statement as a lead in to the continuation of Will Duffy's cross-examining of the popular Calvinist theology from their December 1, 2017 Open Theism debate. Duffy is the founder of opentheism.org (the official home of the debate) and Slick is the founder of carm.org, the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry. * Actions Cannot Be Figures of Speech: Matt Slick in his opening statement misunderstood this point, thinking that Will Duffy and Bob Enyart claim that a figure of speech cannot include an action verb. That has nothing to do with this observation. Here it is, explained in detail, from opentheism.org/verses#regret:  13 - God Shows Regret (similar to "repent"; uses the same Hebrew word, nacham) I greatly regret making Saul king 1 Sam. 15:11 therefore God deposed Saul from the throne and gave the dynasty to David. For "Samuel said to Saul, 'You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD…  For… the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue…'" 1 Sam. 13:13-14. (An "action" cannot be a figure of speech. Why not? Because an action is not only speech; it is an action. God "repenting" that He made Saul King 1 Sam. 15:11, 35 could theoretically be a figure of speech (but if so, then as a figure, it would have to convey some actual meaning). However "to repent" does not refer only to words or thoughts, but it can also refer to an action (to turn from). When any word, including the word "repent", refers to an action, then it cannot be a figure "of speech", because it is an action. When God removed Saul from the throne, and then actually gave the dynasty to David, that deposing of Saul was an action that God performed. (This powerfully illustrates a reason why God inspired His Word as a historical narrative rather than merely as a series of abstractions, so that we would constrain our interpretations based on the biblical accounts.) The Lord repented that He had made man on the earth and was grieved Gen. 6:6-7 so He destroyed the earth's population, which is not speech but an action (except for Noah's family Mat. 24:37-38; 1 Peter 3:20) * Quotes from Calvinist John Piper: Piper wrote an article about one of his own articles. The second is titled, Will we be finally ‘saved' by faith alone? to which Piper answers, "No." To get to that false conclusion Piper rejects using the terms justified and saved as synonyms, and he unwittingly conflates the Christian's life in heaven with our life here. For in heaven we are delivered from our flesh whereas here we are not. By these tactics Piper twists the Scriptures to arrive at his legalist goal, that you cannot be saved by faith alone. He begins his second article (actually, a transcript) like this: "[In] an article titled 'Does God Really Save Us by Faith Alone?' ... you answered no — we are not saved by faith alone" and urging Christians to not use "the term justification interchangeably with salvation" and that "Justification... unites us to Christ by faith alone" but while "works play no role whatsoever in justification" John Piper then contradicts himself by immediating adding that "works... are the necessary fruit of justifying faith..." Confusing what happens in this life as compared to what happens in "the day of redemption", John Piper writes, "we are not justified through sanctification. But we are finally saved through sanctification..." And because Piper doesn't rightly divide between law and grace (i.e., between Israel and the Body, and between Paul and James), in confusion he adds, "faith without works is not the kind of faith that justifies anybody... these works are necessary." And of course, by reject Christ's teaching through Paul that we must "rightly divide the word of truth", Piper arrives at a dispensationally erroneous conclusion that contradicts the Gospel of Grace that God gave to Paul for us, which says: "to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness." Romans 4:5 See Piper make the same legalistic case in his foward to another book.

The section of https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2018.1-9 (Psalm 18:1-9) expresses David's love for God and his praise to the Lord for delivering him from his enemies. We see similar expressions from David in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Sam%2022 (2 Samuel 22), as well as https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%203-5 (Psalms 3-5). As we break down this verse, there are five metaphors that David uses to describe God's relationship with him. 1) He views God as his rock 2) He views God as his fortress 3) He views God as his shield 4) He views God as the horn of salvation 5) He views God as his stronghold What is important about these metaphors? They identify David as a warrior. He fought enemies, often much stronger than him (remember Goliath?). Yet, he relied on God for protection. God as the rock: We see examples of these same metaphors used to describe God throughout the Psalms, such as in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2019.14 (Psalm 19:14); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2028.1 (28:1); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2062.2 (62:2); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2094.22 (94:22) which all describe God as a rock. God as David's Fortress: What is the purpose of a fortress? It's meant to protect against enemies. Throughout Scripture there is an incredible truth to be seen here: no fortress built by human hands could ever provide as much protection for David as the fortress of the Lord. God as David's Shield: We see the Lord protecting David from his enemies on several accounts throughout the Old Testament. David recognizes this as he writes in the Psalms, calling God his shield, covering him as a soldier. God as the horn of salvation: This one may be tricky at first to fully grasp without some cultural context surrounding this phrase. In David's era, horns were a symbol of strength. This is why we see them being used as metaphors for kings in rulers (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Dan%207.8 (Daniel 7:8); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Rev%2017.12 (Revelation 17:12)). Therefore, as David's horn of salvation, he is saying that the Lord empowered and delivered him. God as David's stronghold: For believers today, we have Jesus Christ as our stronghold – our refuge and shield. The apostle Paul refers to our lives as “hidden with Christ in God” in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Col%203.3 (Colossians 3:3). As you go about your day today, keep in mind these incredible truths from this Psalm. It is only through our belief and acceptance as Jesus as our savior for us to be “hidden with Christ in God,” and through this belief, we are Scripturally able to rely on God to be all of these same things for us.

"The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent." - Exodus 14:14 This phrase of “The LORD will fight” has been true throughout the history of Israel (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Sam%2017.47 (1 Samuel 17:47); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Chron%2014.10-11 (2 Chronicles 14:10-11); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Chronicles%2020.15 (20:15); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2024.8 (Psalm 24:8); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Zech%2014.3 (Zechariah 14:3)). When reading this verse, be sure to also read the previous verse, 13, along with it. So both together read, “And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent. With these two verses Moses issued three commands to the Israelites: 1. Do Not Be Afraid 2. Stand Firm 3. Be Silent (or in some translations, “Stand Still”) “Do not be afraid…” this is what grammarians call a negative imperative. Currid tells us that this is “the strongest possible form of expressing negation in the Hebrew language.” This is important to realize the tone of the original language because it lets us know the entire context and tone in which Moses was speaking, and therefore how we can interpret and apply his same emphasis to our own lives. With this phrase being the strongest form of expressing negation, we see that Moses was not comforting the Israelites whatsoever, instead he was rebuking them. What he is telling them is true for us as well, he's telling all to not be afraid because there is no reason to fear – for all we need to do is “stand (our) ground, quietly waiting to see what God (will) do” (Ryken). This scripture is very much true today as well. We know from the Bible that there is a spiritual war waging (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%206.2 (Ephesians 6:2); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/1%20Pet%205.8 (1 Peter 5:8); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Cor%2010.3 (2 Corinthians 10:3)). The Devil pursues us constantly and in every circumstance wants us to fall. Yet, like Moses told the Israelites, we needn't run, for all we need to do is stand firm without fee and see the salvation of our God. Consider this: the Bible is not about what you or I can do to become better people. No, the entirety of the Bible is framed around what Jesus Christ accomplished – his complete atonement for sin, which turned asides God's wrath, and now offers this atonement through the gift of grace for our faith. It is through Jesus that we are able to enter the kingdom of Heaven and into the resurrection of life. What do you need to do to be saved? Nothing. Jesus already did it, and to think that in some way you can earn any part of it is to lessen what Jesus did on the cross. Once you've accepted Jesus, you need to stand your ground. Spiritual warfare is being constantly waged, and we're told a similar thing in Ephesians to what the Israelites were told by Moses: “Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand…” (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Eph%206.13 (Ephesians 6:13)). This is far easier said than done, as standing still and trusting in Jesus isn't what our humanly nature wants to do. When true evil really comes for us, we want to run, cry out in fear, or fix it ourselves. God tells us to stand our ground. We don't need to fight the war, God will fight it for us. And who better to have on your side than the Lord Almighty? “When we are caught between the desert and the sea, all we need to do is be still and look for his salvation.” Sources: 1. John D.
