Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

On this week's Keepin It Real, It's August in Alabama, which means two things: the air conditioner is running non-stop, and somewhere in a house near you, a married couple is fighting over the thermostat. Cam is losing that fight. ----- It's the time of year in Alabama where when the temperature tops out at only ninety degrees we feel like it's a crisp fall day. The mercury is so high so often that ninety degrees feels like a cool breeze. And right now, the weather report online says the "feels like" temperature is one hundred twelve, a full twenty degrees higher than the actual temperature due to the humidity. And it will go higher. It's days like this that I wonder why I live here. I beg for clouds and rain. As awful as it is out there, it's uncomfortable inside, too. Each day I'm on the losing side of a battle over the thermostat. My wife and daughter are wearing sweatshirts. They like it cool, so they drop the temperature to a degree that makes wearing sweatshirts in August comfortable. Me? I complain. "Maybe we can raise the temperature a bit," I say, "and save some money and take off the sweatshirts. It is August, after all." There's no budge. Then my wife assures me I have no idea what she's going through, and she needs it cold and to go find a sweatshirt. I've learned to stay quiet about other's unverifiable discomforts, only to trust that they're awful and that they're real. Life is safer that way. Meanwhile, Alabama Power is rolling around in bathtubs filled with the money we're paying for the air conditioners to operate non-stop. They struggle all day long to keep up. Which brings me back to the empty nest topic I've been focused on lately. In about a week there will be only two of us in this house that has held six of us for twenty years. There's unused rooms now, and I predict that in a short amount of time my wife and I will have settled in different sections of the house to spend our days. Hers on the frigid side of the house where her air conditioner is set to arctic and mine where I can comfortably work and the air conditioner is set on temperate or normal or sane. We'll visit in the kitchen when we eat, otherwise we'll text and call across the house from our preferred climates. Once fall comes, we'll once again share living quarters as there are both outside and inside temperatures in the fall that we can agree to. And we are both drawn to fires in the fireplace, even if takes leaving doors and windows open to make it cool enough inside to warrant one. This temperature battle has been replayed in houses and amongst couples forever. It probably started in Eden, though my memory of that story is fuzzy. I think Satan led her to the tree of good and evil and showed her the thermostat. She kept it a secret, knowing as soon as Adam found it things would   get bad. And he did. I'm convinced a line cut from Gensis is Adam saying, "Wait. So Eden doesn't have to be this cold?" and Eve snapping back, "Don't you touch that thing. Go put on a sweatshirt." I'm Cam Marston, just trying to Keep it Real.

You've probably heard the political ads for people running for PSC in which they tout their conservative bona fides and then attack their opponents as tree-hugging hippies. Those ads don't really help us understand what goes on at the PSC, but they certainly get stuck in your head...""Always totin' Jeremy Oden"" comes to mind. Unfortunately, Alabamians often know very little about positions in our state government that impact them the most directly. The Public Service Commission (PSC) is certainly at the top of the list of those extremely important elected positions Alabamians need to know and understand. This week Bryan is joined by PSC President Twinkle Cavanaugh to hear her story and how she got into politics. Twinkle also gives us a rundown of what exactly it is that the Public Service Commission does. Naturally, the first question is always whether Twinkle is her real name. You'll be surprised by the answer and enjoy hearing how she got it. You'll also hear about all the other ways she has served in state politics and the roots of her passion. More to the point of this podcast, Bryan asks the tough questions surrounding the PSC's responsibility in regulating Alabama Power rates and what their role is in the coal ash cleanup. - Are our rates in Alabama really among the highest in the nation? - Why are our power bills so much higher than other states? - When was the last rate audit on Alabama Power? This informative podcast will give you a window into the role and powers of a very important office in our state government that affects your wallet daily.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2024 20:38

Not gonna lie, when the writing staff saw the phrase “energy audit” pop up in the podcast this week, we became very concerned that The Overlap Podcast might now be some sort of digital media arm of the Church of Scientology and that our boys Sid and Keith were now being held on some ocean liner being tested for thetans (the remnants of immortal spiritual beings that have some sort of supernatural residue in humans … or something) and hanging out with John Travolta and Tom Cruise. We are pleased to report back this is not the case, though we do feel compelled to say that we do believe Shelly Miscavige is obviously still alive and has been on one of the Sea Org cruises for … like 17 years now and just doesn't like land and has developed agoraphobia … totally plausible. So, instead of indulging in L. Ron Hubbard's tax dodge … er … religion, we're taking a deep dive into the exciting enclave of energy - how we generate it, how we expend it, how we best distribute it and how Reddy Kilowatt, the mascot designed in 1926 for Alabama Power, might be the most terrifying company mascot of all time (note: we will do three of those things in the podcast this week; one of them is food for thought we will explore further in the future unless that demon power bug murders us in our dreams Freddy Kreuger style). Aligning your energy with your core values, revitalizing your routine, finding ways to develop lucid dreaming to avoid ancient power company mascots trying to unalive you in your sleep … great advice for your everyday life that's practical, applicable and necessary to avoid an untimely end for you and your business. Tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast … and remember, Shelly Miscavige is definitely still alive. Definitely. We would never say anything to the contrary. Ever. So leave us be, David.
