We're honored to welcome a local Alaskan hockey legend, JJ Johnson, to the podcast. JJ's journey through the Alaskan hockey scene, donning the jerseys UAA Seawolves and the Alaska Aces, is impressive.JJ Johnson was the definition of an enforcer on the ice, the player you'd send out to maintain order and, when necessary, drop the gloves to defend his teammates. But his story goes far beyond the semi-pro & pro rinks. He's one of the few Alaskans who made it all the way to the NHL, and while his NHL career may have been relatively short, his impact was immense. One of the memorable moments in JJ's career was his 2014 fight against the legendary John Scott, a battle that has been viewed 1.3 million times on YouTube, a testament to the unforgettable nature of that knockout. But JJ Johnson isn't just a tough guy; he's also a man with a heart of gold. In this episode, he opens up about his other passions, particularly his mission for mentoring kids from all walks of life. His commitment to positively impacting the youth is as inspiring as his on-ice exploits.Through our conversation, JJ sheds light on the grueling realities of professional hockey, emphasizing that sometimes there are alternative paths to fulfilling your dreams. Join us as we delve into the life and career of this Alaskan hockey hero, learning about the man behind the enforcer and the lessons he has to share.New episodes every Monday.Hosted by Kyle Reading & Steven CornfieldContact us…Email Us:hey@gofixyourselfpodcast.comInstagram: https://bit.ly/GFYInstagram@kyleareading@stevencornfieldTwitter:https://bit.ly/GFYTwitterFacebook:https://bit.ly/GFYFacebook

When the NHL announced its return-to-play plan back in May, the result was the end of the season for seven teams with the likelihood of an extended offseason. Those seven teams have now gone almost eight months without playing a game. With an anticipated start of season date to be sometime in January, it could be a total of 10 months with no game action. Ottawa Senators assistant coach Davis Payne and the rest of the Sens coaching staff will be now tasked with preparing a young, rebuilding team coming off of one of the longest off-seasons in NHL history. The struggling Senators have finished as a bottom two team in the league in each of the past three years. While times have definitely been tough, a young core of Brady Tkachuk, Thomas Chabot, and 2020 top five picks Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson provide a core that is giving reason for some hope to Sens fans. Payne will be heading into his 11th consecutive season as an NHL coach and his second as an assistant in Ottawa. The Kamloops, BC native got his coaching career started in the ECHL, spending seven seasons split between the Greenville Grrrowl, Pee Dee Pride and Alaska Aces. He would lead the Aces to a Kelly Cup championship in 2006. The St. Louis Blues took notice of his ECHL success, hiring him to coach their AHL affiliate in Peoria in 2007. Just three seasons later, Payne would replace Andy Murray midseason and become head coach of the Blues. His next stop was in LA as an assistant to Darryl Sutter for five seasons, highlighted by a Stanley Cup Championship in 2014. After two seasons in Buffalo, Payne landed in Ottawa to join DJ Smith's staff. In this week's podcast, we’ll discuss the art of guiding a team through a rebuilding process, dealing with the extended offseason, and Payne's advice for developing individual skills in your players.
Welcome to Season 3:Episode 4 of 'The Player And The Fan' featuring David Noel III and Quierra Luck. They are excited to bring you an official podcast highlighting both, equally important, sporting elements, the player and the Fan. They will declare their viewpoints weekly, featuring various sporting topics and games around the ACC, specifically North Carolina. Welcome to the new season! David and Quierra are happy to welcome you back with more hot topics, debates, and of course, featured special guests. This year has been incredibly difficult for all of us. As we try and navigate our way through elections, racial injustice, and political division, the duo hopes to provide you with a short escape full of laughs, David's dramatic storytelling, and of course, analysis of the upcoming college basketball season. On episode four, 'The Player and The Fan' welcome 2009 NCCA Champion Justin Watts. Watts spent four seasons with North Carolina, increasing his playing time as his leadership and strength evolved. The versatile Durham native played in multiple spots for Coach Williams, ranging from point guard to power forward. Though he didn't spend much time on the court, Watts' contribution or athleticism was the punch Williams needed in games. Notably, Watts' most memorable play comes during the final minutes of the 2009 National Championship scoring the last two points against Michigan State. After graduating from North Carolina, Watts has spent the last nine years showcasing his superior athleticism and skill. He played with teams such as Rockhampton Rockets, Mineros de Caborca, Takamatsu Five Arrows, Al Gharafa Doha, Fribourg Olympic Basket, Alaska Aces, and MKS Dąbrowa Górnicza. Watts continued his championship streak with an All-Star recognition in 2013 and a BJ League champion in 2015. Impressively, during his time with the Alaska Aces, Watts scored 62 points and 26 rebounds during his two-game stint with the team due to a calf injury. Returning overseas, specifically to the Netherlands, will be like returning home. This episode is has dynamic storytelling by Watts details the moment he knew he was playing for Roy Williams at UNC and just who he likes to start the upcoming season. So, sit back, choose your side, and enjoy the dialogue! Make sure you let your voice be heard! Are you with The Player or The Fan?!
