Sheldon Kennedy never dreamed of being a 20-year-old kid who would be in and out of psych wards. He never dreamed of being in a hospital on suicide watch, and he never dreamed of going through drug and alcohol treatment eight times. But that became his reality. From a young age, Sheldon was sexually abused by his junior hockey coach, Graham James, a prominent figure in his hockey community. And for 11 years, Sheldon struggled in silence — the first five while the abuse was going on, and the following six during which still no one else knew the truth about what had happened to him. As Sheldon rose through the ranks of professional hockey, the weight of his secret drove him down some dark paths. It wasn't until 1996, when he came forward with what had happened to him, that Sheldon could finally see a future for himself as a husband and a father. Still, looking back on his NHL career is complicated because there are feelings of shame and guilt around who he was. What he does take pride in is the fact that he can be happy now – scars and all. In 2014, Sheldon was honored with the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian ranking. And to him, that should be a symbol of hope for anyone struggling to become the person they did dream of becoming. *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. Twenty-five years ago, Sheldon Kennedy was playing at the highest level of hockey in the world, living the dream of millions of Canadian boys. But he was facing an impossible decision: whether to go public with his story of sexual abuse by his junior hockey coach. Sheldon shared his traumatic experience and it changed his life. Speaking out about abuse and, eventually, addiction hasn't always been easy. It's taken an enormous toll. But Sheldon keeps listening to other survivors, and encouraging the rest of us to listen as well. Sheldon has been a big part of the changes that have allowed others to come forward with their stories. But that work isn't finished. Like his own recovery, it's an ongoing process, and he continues to fight every day for himself and others. Sheldon's message is powerful and inspiring, filled with hope, strength, and an important lesson: take care of yourself so you can truly take care of others. In this conversation, former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy, himself a victim of abuse, and his fellow Respect Group Inc. founder Wayne McNeil discuss their work helping sports organizations and businesses of all kinds combat abuse, discrimination, bullying, and harassment.

Former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy says we need to continue to learn important lessons and do better after former Chicago Blackhawk Kyle Beach recently shared his story about how he had been sexually assaulted by a former video coach with the team more than a decade ago. Guest Bio: Sheldon Kennedy, Respect Group
When Sheldon Kennedy was just 14 years old his hockey coach began sexually abusing him. Terrified, ashamed and certain nobody would be believe him, Sheldon kept the abuse a secret. It continued for five years. Years later, as an adult by then years removed from the actual abuse but still reeling and utterly broken from it, Sheldon finally opened up about what happened to him and, by sharing his story, started the long and winding road to healing.Sheldon joins Kelsie for a conversation about his story, about how he has devoted his life's work to the cause of raising awareness and educating people about sexual abuse, harassment, bullying and discrimination of all types, about being a voice that people turn to and about affecting tangible and lasting change in this space. He talks about what it has been like to watch former Chicago Blackhawks prospect Kyle Beach go public with his own story of sexual abuse in the hockey world, about where hope his lies and about recovery.
Lots of talk about hockey culture in both, the Welcome Matt and Price is Right. Patrick Johnston of Post Media joined Matt and Blake and start off by talking about Bob Murray and the latest NHL scandal. Hockey is a pretty good game but it’s not a great game. It’s things like this that keep it from being so. Referenced Blackhawks trying to bury their problems thinking it doesn’t matter, but it does. Murray has had a nice life in ANA the last decade but they haven’t been that great. It’s about how he has dealt with staff and how you talk to people. This seems to be the early indication of what this is about. Talked about what he has coming in the Province on the culture of hockey. Talked to Sheldon Kennedy. Wants to know how to create a culture of listening and understanding. Talked about what we will see from the Ducks, who PJ had at the bottom of the Pacific. They’ve found some decent players and have some good defensemen. There is an argument that they should have moved some of their guys. Talked about the Ducks rival status vs the Canucks. It was a Sekeres day to sizzle on Hot Take Tuesday, could he do it? A couple of different giveaways, listen for your chance to enter!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Ray & Benny have the latest on the Winnipeg Jets, a look at the Leafs, Carey Price return to Montreal, Chicago firing of head coach, Sheldon Kennedy's take on the Chipman and Cheveldayoff commitments to improvement, Aaron Rodger's immunization, OBJ clears waivers, Bombers in the CFL continue to dominate.

*** In light of revelations that the NHL Chicago Blackhawks covered up a case of sexual abuse of one it's players by a member of it's coaching staff, we are re-posting this powerful interview with former NHL player and sexual abuse survivor Sheldon Kennedy. This interview originally aired in January, 13th, 2021. *** ***This interview contains subject matters and details that may not be appropriate for young listeners. *** Sheldon Kennedy is one of Canada's leading campaigners in the fight against child abuse. The retired NHL veteran and founder of the Calgary Child Advocacy Centre joins National Chief Bellegarde to discuss ways in which the pandemic has made child abuse worse, what can be done to improve that, his own history of abuse by his hockey coach as a teenager, and how telling that story gave him the strength to get his own life on track and help others, including First Nations survivors of Residential Schools. And, on a lighter note, Kennedy talks about how winning CTV's Battle of the Blades renewed his love of skating. Sheldon Kennedy played eight years in the National Hockey League, with the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins. As a teenager he led the Swift Current Broncos to a Memorial Cup championship, the best team in Junior Hockey. But it was also at Swift Current that Kennedy was sexually abused for years by his coach, Graham James. When Kennedy revealed this abuse publicly towards the end of his pro career, Graham James was convicted and sent to prison. He has since been convicted for the abuse of several more players. For Kennedy, this marked the start of a life dedicated to supporting and speaking out for sexual abuse survivors. His leadership, including founding the Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary and the Respect Group, saw him being awarded the Order of Canada in 2016. In the fall of 1996, the Canadian sports world was rocked by a major sex abuse scandal. NHL player Sheldon Kennedy courageously went forward to police to reveal he suffered years of abuse at the hands of his childhood coach, Graham James. When Kennedy broke his silence, it started an important conversation around sexual assault and opened the door for others to do the same. In 1997, James pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two former players -- including Kennedy. He admitted to sexually assaulting the boys hundreds of times. Since then, according to the Parole Board of Canada, there are six victims named on his record but the board notes he’s “admitted to have had sexual intercourse with around 20 hockey players he was coaching ... using manipulation, control and his position of trust and authority to facilitate the assaults.” One of the other hockey players James has admitted to sexually assaulting, is former NHL star Theo Fleury. In this episode of the Global News podcast, Crime Beat, crime reporter Nancy Hixt shares the stories of four men who James abused as boys. Learn the shocking details of how signs were ignored -- so were outright requests for help from hockey officials. These men now work every day to empower victims and take control back from their abusers. Our Shifting The Employee Experience series has allowed us to speak with some amazing guests who are all working to make mental health and mental wellbeing a widely talked about topic. We feel very fortunate to have been joined by Sheldon Kennedy, former NHL player and long time advocate of Respect in the Workplace and Respect in Sport. Through Respect Group, he works to bring educational programs to workplaces, in sports and schools. These programs give people a baseline understanding and make it possible to build a climate of openness, so people are empowered to not only self-advocate about their mental wellbeing but to check in with others. Sheldon’s perspective that it’s not about being perfect, but being available to listen and give feedback from an honest, caring place helps to highlight how we can all play a role in making our workplaces, schools and sports teams safer for everyone.

Brady Leavold is joined by WHL and Minor pro legend Kimbi Daniels. Daniels holds the record for most goals in one game in the WHL with 7, while starring for the Swift Current Broncos. Kimbi won the Memorial Cup in 1989 with the Broncos with players like Sheldon Kennedy and Joe Sakic. Kimbi was one of the highest ranked junior players coming out of the Western Hockey League but suffered from a degenerative knee condition that altered his lights out skating ability. After being drafted by the Flyers in 1990 Kimbi only played 27 games in the NHL due to his knee injury, all though he was able to reinvent himself and have an extremely incredible career in the Minors. He won a Kelly Cup with the Alaska Aces in 2006 and played close to 1000 professional career games averaging almost a point a game. Kimbi is now retired living in beautiful Anchorage Alaska. Leavold also shares his second journal entry from a time when he was incarcerated during the summer of 2019.Visit H2H Website to enter to win free Team Issued Ltd. ARTWORK AND INTERVIEW BY CHRIS. W TUTTY Hi guys. I'm with rodeo royalty, right? Dow, your buddy Chris tody, and I am here interviewing none other than Jason Glass. Now, I have been a fan of this guy for probably 25 years at least it seems like. I mean, the first time, uh, I came down here with, uh, Sheldon Kennedy and I mean, things were a lot different back then, man. Like, I think we drove up in the Envoy and, uh, uh, they let us park arrayed on the Gates. Uh. I'm just wondering how our things changed since that has changed a lot. You know, I've been here for 48 years since I was born, and, uh, you know, it's a, it's a whole different world back here. It's a, you know, it's a lot more of a business. Um, you know, everyone used to have, I would say everyone still has fun,but it's, uh, it's not the party. It used to be. You know, we put a lot of time and effort and money into race and wagons and, uh, taking care of horses as best we can. So it's changed a bunch. I think that both of us have grown up a little bit more, you than me, for sure. You got the wife and the lovely kids twins too, as well. Yeah. No, things have changed in my life too. I've got way more control over my life and, uh, you know, I've got a great family, uh, two twins that are eight years old and the beautiful wife. Brianne, so it's a, I live in a beautiful world. No, absolutely. I mean, like I said, the good old days, there was big campfires down here.

They are skating for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. Manitoba born, former NHL superstar Sheldon Kennedy has had a successful career. Kennedy has become an advocate and inspiration for survivors of abuse after courageously coming forward to shine light on the abuse he faced as a teenager at the hands of his coach. The former NHL star has kept quite busy. He has received numerous awards including being named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015, the David Foster Humanitarian Award in 2014 and many other honours. Kennedy also co-founded the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre, which provides youth with tools to empower and prevent online bullying and harassment. Chuck Bastie interviews skater Kaitlyn Weaver as well as her reasons for choosing Canadian Tire Jumpstart as her charity of choice! Chuck also chats with Marco Di Buono from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart about the wonderful partnership they have with Sheldon Kennedy and Kaitlyn Weaver! Kaitlyn Weaver is competing with Sheldon Kennedy. They are skating for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. Kaitlyn Weaver was born in Houston, Texas and began skating by the age of six. By 17, Weaver moved to Kitchener, Ont. where she began skating alongside her current partner Andrew Poje. Weaver and Poje won a bronze medal in ice dancing at the Canadian Championships after only five months skating as teammates. Together, both Weaver and Poje have represented Canada internationally for about 13 years. The two have gone on to win three World Ice Dance medals, gold medals at the Grand Prix Final Championships, as well as three Canadian Ice Dance titles. The pair placed seventh in both the Sochi 2014 Olympics as well as the PyeongChang Olympics in 2018. She is currently an ambassador for Right To Play, and is also a co-founder of Skate To Great, a charity dedicated to giving Canadian children the opportunity to get on the ice regardless of their economic or physical circumstances. Weaver is competing with Sheldon Kennedy as her partner. They are both skating for Canadian Tire Jumpstart — a national charity that helps kids overcome barriers in their lives, whether it be financial or accessibility barriers to sport and recreation in an effort to provide inclusive play for all. When Battle of the Blades contestants throw it down on the rink, they are not chasing personal riches. They are in it for their favourite charitable cause, which sounds like a perfect summary of Sheldon Kennedy's life work. The former NHL player, who is strapping on toe picks for the first time for BOTB, is quick to say his life and career was permanently scarred by the sexual abuse he suffered as a youth. Before Sheldon, nobody talked about coaches as predators. And, in fact, the silence surrounding the issue nearly killed him. But Sheldon Kennedy has changed the world, and his own life story, by advocating for victims and training more than one and a half million sport volunteers and workers to end the abuse. How's he doing now? Well, he's a new farmer and a new father and he's having fun on the new skates. Host Anastasia Bucsis checks in with that rare hockey legend whose greatest work is happening off the ice.

Welcome to a special Agree or Disagree:Facebook Live Event as we reflect on the outpouring of emotion Hockey. It’s a part of the identity of Canada. We all dream of playing. We all watch. Some of the best Canadian memories and moments are on the ice.Rain, snow, or shine, families would wake up at 5:00 AM to take their kid or kids to the rink. They will stay up late. There are many of nights that there would be games on the street or on ice and we would just…play. Then some would be good enough to advance to another level. And that dream of one day playing in the NHL would continue. For players. For broadcasters. For coaches. They would travel on busses down the highways and roads of this country. Pursuing the passion that they loved. It brought smiles to faces, bonds of friendship, and lessons learned. And now, that just seems…different. This weekend was a weekend of sorrow, sadness and grief. The Humboldt Broncos were on their way to a playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks. A crash killed 15 and injured 14 others.,It’s hard to say. It was hard to write. The outpouring of grief was felt across Canada and the world. You heard just a piece of that from Connor McDavid, Glen Gulutzan, Mike Babcock and Sheldon Kennedy. There was more. Much more.Where we go from here? How do we support the victims, some obvious, others connected in many different ways. Joining me is Adele Desjardins-Lepine. BIOAdele Desjardins is strongly connected to her roots. She is a proud coal miners daughter raised by her dad at 10 months of age with the support of her aunts, uncles, grandparents and her community. She has faced many adversities in her life. Some people look for escape in self-destruction or addiction...but not Adele. She has taken the lessons learned through pivotal points in her life to become the amazing person she is today. She is dedicated to raising her 2 girls in Drumheller Canada. She is a pillar in her community, an inspiring friend and an Achievement Club Leader.Adele is a Transformational Weekend Master Trainer and speaker. She is passionate about sharing the principles taught to her through positive psychology and how we strengthen our willpower, challenge our beliefs, understand love and choose happiness to succeed. We cover a number of different topics. We hope this podcast gives some sort of comfort and peace.Thank you for listening and watching.
