The FCS quarterfinals kick off tonight and continue tomorrow in Fargo as North Dakota State hosts Southern Conference champion Mercer for a berth in the semifinals.   The Bears (11-2) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time after beating Rhode Island 17-10 last week in the second round. They are led defensively by a team that has racked up 23 interceptions, including two separate players with seven picks.   They racked up individual postseason awards for their success; Mike Jacobs in his first season was named SoCon coach of the year, running back Dwayne McGee was named offensive player of the year, Bradyen Manley took defensive player of the year and defensive end Andrew Zock was the freshman of the year.   Mercer has a true freshman leading them at quarterback in Whitt Newbauer. Newbauer took over during the middle part of the season for DJ Smith. He's completed 57% of his passes for 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.   North Dakota State enters the quarterfinals for a 15th straight year after knocking off Abilene Christian last week. The Bison will face a SoCon team in the quarters for a fourth separate time. NDSU played Wofford in 2012 and 2017, East Tennessee State in 2021 and Samford in 2022.   The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo preview the matchup and look ahead to the other games in the quarterfinal round.

Multiple seasons of mediocrity and missing out on the NHL postseason has finally caught up with DJ Smith, as the Ottawa Senators fired him on Monday after a seriously disappointing start to the season that was supposed to look a whole lot different for an Ottawa team boasting such elite-level talent as Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Josh Norris and a lot of other fantasy-relevant names. Tuesday's episode also looks into what is going on yet again with the Vegas Golden Knights goaltending situation. One year removed from employing five different goalies, the Knights are once again dealing with multiple injuries to No. 1 'tender Adin Hill, who returned over the weekend to only leave the game once again with injury and did not play again. Logan Thompson should become an immediate target should any fantasy hockey GM need a little support in the blue paint until Hill's prognosis is available. We wrap the show with Tuesday's big-time NHL betting board and a look into the impressive heater from fantasy hockey stud and Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon, who is riding the NHL's longest active point streak of 15 games. It may be November but the temperature in three Canadian hockey markets is rising by the day. Jeff and Elliotte key in on Edmonton, Ottawa, and Toronto as these three NHL teams continue to struggle out the gate. In Edmonton the scrutiny is being placed on the goaltending (03:16) and they discuss whether Jay Woodcroft should be on the hot seat (13:00). In Ottawa they're chanting "fire DJ Smith" and Brady Tkachuk did his best to distract from it (20:30). In Toronto, the criticism is placed on the new players (29:00). Why has it been so difficult for them to translate in Toronto? They also touch on the San Jose Sharks giving up 10 goals in back-to-back contests (41:10). What is the way forward for San Jose and how will ownership tolerate a season like this? They wrap the pod by talking about Jack Hughes' injury and how it may not be as bad as originally feared (1:11:24).Jeff and Elliotte answer your questions in the Montana's Thought Line (1:00:22).Email the podcast at 32thoughts@sportsnet.ca or call the Montana's Thought Line at 1-833-311-3232 and leave us a voicemail. This podcast was produced and mixed by Dominic Sramaty and hosted by Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
