Sam Betesh (Kings Talk) joins host Jesse Cohen crown a King of the Week and recap the twenty-second week of the 2025-26 season. The pair discuss the end of the recent home stand where the Kings went 1-2-0 in the past week with games against Colorado, New York and Montreal. The pair also discuss the impact of the new head coach, the trade deadline and what needs to happen to see the LA Kings make the playoffs.
The Oilers added big, right-shot defender Connor Murphy to shore up their defensive conscience, but when you factor in the Skinner/Kulak-for-Jarry swap and the draft capital spent, it’s fair to question whether they’ve meaningfully improved, especially with bottom-six centre still a need. On the broader D market, Tyler Myers’ no-trade indecision may be stalling movement, with names like Ristolainen, Faulk, and Parayko also in play. The Rangers’ Braden Schneider and the Blues’ Robert Thomas are drawing interest but would command massive returns, while Jordan Binnington chatter is quietly building after his Olympic performance boost. Meanwhile, Craig Berube seemed to question his team’s heart and hockey IQ and the Kings fired Jim Hiller with DJ Smith stepping in amid playoff pressure. Will teams like Boston and Pittsburgh, armed with significant draft capital, emerge as surprising deadline players? The countdown is on!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Zach Dooley joins host Jesse Cohen to discuss the announcement that Jim Hiller has been relieved of his duties as head coach and the naming of DJ Smith as interim head coach. The pair also discuss the media availability with Ken Holland.
The second coaching of the season took place on Sunday when Jim Hiller was replaced by DJ Smith - a day after a win. Also, who made a bigger statement over the weekend: The Buffalo Sabres completing a road sweep out of the break in Tampa or backup goaltenders on Sunday?Let's not forget the trade deadline is Friday at 3pm et. The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the brink after losing 3 straight to Florida, leading to questions about their star players' abilities in crucial games. DJ Smith's coaching tenure with the Senators was marked by inconsistency, leading to skepticism about his future as a head coach in the NHL. That said, he is getting some attention for head coaching jobs in the NHL again. The Senators are making significant changes in their front office, including hiring familiar faces. Carter Yakemchuk's development is a hot topic as he prepares for the upcoming season, with hopes for improvement in his game. Negotiations for Fabian Zetterlund's contract could be contentious, as differing valuations between the player and the Senators emerge. Ian and Julian tackle the Oilers decision to waive Jack Campbell, and what it means for an Edmonton team that only have two wins this season. They debate if Auston Matthews can score 50 goals in 50 games, and if Quinn Hughes can reach the 100 point plateau from the blue line? Plus, they discuss San Jose General Manager Mike Grier calling out his winless Sharks and DJ Smith returning the favour, publicly supporting his captain Brady Tkachuk, and Brady giving up on social media, at least for now. Mike Russo reports on a sad day in the hockey world on Monday, as Adam Johnson's celebration of life was held in his home state of Minnesota, and Russo chats with New Jersey Devils head coach Lindy Ruff about being a Stanley Cup favorite this season, led by the magic of the Hughes brothers, Jesper Bratt, Tyler Toffoli and Dougie Hamilton.
