How do birds build their nests? By instinct, of course—at least that's what the conventional wisdom tells us. A swallow builds a swallow's nest; a robin builds a robin's nest. Every bird just follows the rigid template set down its genes. But over the course of the last couple decades, scientists have begun to take a closer look at nests—they've weighed and measured them, they've filmed the building process. And the conventional wisdom just doesn't hold up. These structures vary in all kinds of ways, even within a species. They're shaped by experience, by learning, by cultural tradition. When we look at a bird's nest, we're looking at the product of a flexible mind.   My guest today is Dr. Susan Healy. Sue is a Professor in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews and an expert in birds—their behavior, their cognition, and their evolution. For more than a decade now, Sue has been pioneering a new chapter in the study of birds' nests.    Here, Sue and I talk about some of the most impressive nests (as well as some of the least impressive). We do a bit of Birds' Nests 101—the different forms they take, the functions they serve, which sex does the building, how these structures evolved, and more. We dig into the mounting evidence that birds are in fact quite flexible in their building practices, that they learn from others and from their own experience. We discuss recent evidence from Sue's team that cultural traditions shape the weaver nests of the Kalahari. And we talk about what nests might have in common with songs and tools. Along the way, we touch on: pigeon nests and hummingbird nests, dinosaur nests and chimpanzee nests; Alfred Russel Wallace; commonalities in the techniques of human weavers and weaver birds; whether bird personality might be reflected in nest style; the brain basis of nest-building; and a whole lot else.    Hope you enjoy this one, friends. On to my conversation with Dr. Sue Healy.    A transcript of this episode will be available soon.   Notes and links 2:30 – An example of a post on the (seemingly inadequate) nests of pigeons.  7:30 – An article featuring a variety of weaverbird nests. 10:30 – Alfred Russel Wallace's essay on birds' nests is available here.  15:00 – A paper from another branch of Dr. Healy's work, on hummingbirds.  16:00 – The 1902 book by Charles Dixon on the science “caliology.” 17:00 – An example of research done by the Colliases on weavers.  19:00 – For an up-to-date primer on birds' nests—covering a number of the questions we discuss here—see Dr. Healy's recent primer. 22:30 – An article about hummingbird eggs.  28:30 – A paper by Dr. Healy and colleagues on the use of human materials in birds' nests.

Vandaag gaan we dat doen Rutger Hoekstra, Manager Business to Business and Innovations bij ViaBOVAG.nl.

Can renewables really save the day? Auke Hoekstra, Director of the NEON Research Program, says they can. The renewables researcher firmly states that we can power this society on renewables energy, dramatically reducing the harms caused by our current energy system and providing equitable access to energy. However, he does not think this means the renewable roll-out is inevitable thanks to political and economic forces built on fossil fuelled power. Known as the “Debunker in chief”, Auke and I have a lengthy, nuanced, tense and joyful discussion about the question of renewables: their effectiveness, limitations, and how to use them responsibly. On the scientific side of the conversation, we cover the nitty gritty of energy density, materials access, and land use. We also situate the conversation in the wider socio-political context, leading to a conversation on shared values and responsibility.Planet: Critical is 100% independent and community-powered.

Hoekstra wasn't swimming regularly, though, and certainly not sprinting regularly. However, after the idea of sprinting a 50 free for 100 days straight was presented to him, Hoekstra decided to give it a go. His first 50 was 22.2 (25-yard pool). After the first week, he switched from a brief to wearing a tech suit. He didn't do any in-pool warm-up or warm-down before or after the 50 sprint, but he did do a dryland warmup routine for safety and injury prevention. He didn't do any other form of exercise outside of this during the 100 days. On day 100, Hoekstra swam his fastest 50 of the entire experiment, 20.4. Listen to what Hoekstra learned during this process as well as what he will now carry over into his workout routine moving forward.

And by always walking through the door together, PT and OT, I think it kind of muddies our practices, and it reduces our ability to be more specific and more potent with our treatment sessions.” 14:36  Bryan  “we all tell patients frequent, shorter bouts of activity  and, and if. If I know that Paul is going to go focus on this, on whatever he's doing with the patient, I'm going to titrate it so that maybe the patient just needs an hour between our sessions or three hours, maybe, but I can still do quality treatment that allows the patient to have full access and the time and energy to be able to work with Paul later. And then the patient's getting a second session.”

I loved this conversation for a few reasons. One, Auke is an incredibly smart person. You'll pick that up quickly. Two, I don't agree with everything Auke believes, which makes for a fascinating conversation. Auke is a staunch renewable energy advocate. I'm on the fence. I think we can live somewhere in between where fossil fuels play their role, and if it is economical and just as good, renewables should be there too. We spend almost 90 minutes discussing: The bull case for renewable energy Mythbusting popular renewable bear cases Copper versus Aluminum Fixing The Electricity Grid And more. If you're interested in energy, renewables, or electrification metals, you will love this episode. Finally, a big thanks to the following sponsors for making the podcast a reality. It's episode 76 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Lots of material in this week's episode, including Pat's examination of new Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra's record as a former congressman, ambassador, Tea Party founder, Trump-backer, and lobbyist. Sure, Pete Hoekstra doesn't believe in demonic possession unlike his predecessor (at least, he hasn't publicly said he does) but there's no ideological daylight between Hoekstra and the now-ousted chair, Kristina Karamo. In fact, Pat has more information about Pete Hoekstra's past than he could talk about on the show this week. Click here for more! Then, Pat continues to delve into the White Christian Nationalist movement, which is taking over the Republican Party, both in Michigan, and across the country. And if Donald Trump wins this Fall, the Christian Nationalists will gain more power than we could ever imagine just a decade ago. Dr. Sara Moslener is a researcher, writer, and lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Anthropology, and Religion at Central Michigan University. Dr. Moslener is the author of "Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence," and she hosted an eight-part docu-series podcast called, "Pure White." She joins Pat to discuss history of White Christian Nationalism, and how it's steeped in the white culture myth that's prevalent in our nation's history.  Finally, Pat's "Last Call" takes Gaza protesters to task for choosing to attack only progressive allies while refusing to protest Donald Trump and his White Christian Nationalist followers.  Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com
