Adrianne Theetge moved to the Hudson Valley from Georgia after doing disaster relief in NYC for 9/11 in the AmeriCorps NCCC program. After several years working and serving our elections and our political system, she just recently went back to graduate school to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She loves her new career as an ENL teacher serving students who are learning the English language. Experiencing grief after the loss of her brother and father she shares with us some of what has helped her through that process. She is a proud mother of two daughters. One of which, Aliza, has been a guest on the show in the past. She enjoys being outside running on the beautiful trails in the Hudson Valley, playing soccer, reading, thrift store shopping, exploring new places, and meditating (a new found invaluable tool).I loved our talk today that actually took place at my house over tea. Adrianne is so warm and thoughtful and shares deeply from her heart space about grief, talking through the hard bits, career change, overcoming fears, letting people in, saying yes or no when that's her truth, being a mom, and the secrets to her happy marriage.Today's bonus conversation with Warren is about brain health.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas
Atalaya Sergi (https://americorps.gov/leadership/director-americorps-seniors) is Director, AmeriCorps Seniors, AmeriCorps (officially the U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service or CNCS) which is an independent agency of the United States government that engages more than five million Americans in service through it's various programs including AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps NCCC, AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps Seniors, the Volunteer Generation Fund, and other national service initiatives. The agency's mission is "to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering." While a government agency, AmeriCorps acts much like a foundation and is the nation's largest annual grant maker supporting service and volunteering. It was created by the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. Ms. Sergi brings 20 years of experience in service, community engagement, and education to this role. She has worked in public school districts and the nonprofit sector, bringing private and public organizations together to ensure citizens of all ages, and those in under-served communities, thrive. Ms. Sergi most recently served as the vice president of strategic partnerships & programming at Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc. There she managed AmeriCorps State and National and AmeriCorps Seniors programs from the grantee level, launching her former organization's only Foster Grandparent program. Ms. Sergi has been a member of several advisory committees, councils, and coalitions, including as a founder of Los Angeles Generation to Generation, which focused on engaging older adults to support young children across Los Angeles County. She was also selected as an Encore Fellow, using her time to write about the positive impact seniors can have in educational settings. Ms. Sergi earned a master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University and a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Virginia.

I met Cyntya Uriegas in 2016 during our AmeriCorps NCCC service year, where Cyntya was one of the cool kids on a specially trained wildland firefighting team. After that she eventually landed on a small island off the coast of Boston. There she spent about a year working with Outward Bound helping inner city kids build life confidence in the great outdoors. Her “kiddos” taught her many surprisingly deep lessons while they worked and played together on the island – about overcoming fears, gratitude, and the power of community. Toward the end of the show, Cyntya gives us the rundown on how her unusual life experiences of the last few years prepared her for her biggest adventure yet – a year-long mission trip with The World Race. For anybody who loves a good calling story, this is one you'll want to hear. You just never know where life will take you! “It was a smack in the face, but in a good way. I'd never been out of the country, and I was going to a place with so much poverty, but so much kindness. This country—I felt it open its arms and embrace me.” Shauna Riddensdale is something of a serial adventurer—at age 18 she completed a 10-month service year with AmeriCorps NCCC and has not stopped exploring. She's since hiked the Appalachian trail, traveled the country in a van, and even spent time abroad in Nepal as a disaster relief worker. For two months, Shauna lived in a tent city with a hundred other All Hands and Hearts volunteers while rebuilding a school after an earthquake. She shares what it was like to eat Nepali momo and dal bhat with villagers, build relationships with traveling volunteers of all ages, and explore the Himalayan countryside after her service. Shauna wholeheartedly recommends All Hands and Hearts for those interested in both travel and disaster relief volunteering. Go to Allhandsandhearts.org to apply!
Cecilia Montesdeoca is graduate Applied Community and Economic Development fellow at Illinois State University studying anthropology. Her previous service work experience includes working as a project manager for a non-profit in Peru, and serving terms with AmeriCorps through Illinois Public Health Association AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps NCCC in Denver, CO as a Team Leader. Cecilia is currently in her second year of her graduate studies completing her field practicum in North Dakota. Her 11-month field placement is with Dakota Resource Council where she is a community organizer with communities impacted by oil and gas extraction to help shape public opinion and influence public policy.
At age 20, fresh out of training with AmeriCorps NCCC, Devin Mott helped set up two disaster relief warehouses in response to devastating floods in Louisiana and tornadoes in Georgia. · He shares what it was like being dispatched overnight to disaster zones on just hours' notice and waking up to scenes of devastation · Mucking and gutting houses overrun with mold in Louisiana and clearing tornado debris in Georgia · Sleeping on cots in crowded shelters and showering in trailers · And learning how to operate a forklift and run security to keep relief supplies flowing. Devin also tells us why it's important to be kind to volunteers during any crisis, who are undergoing a tremendous amount of stress to help the rest of us; why you should carefully consider what sorts of goods you donate in the aftermath of a disaster; and what it means to rise to the occasion, put our own discomfort aside, and step in to help others if we can. “It's a stressful work environment . . . but without a question I would do it again, because someone needs to do it. Someone needs to be the guy that says, ‘Hey, I got the time. Hey, I got the ability to make other people's lives a little easier.” -- Show notes: Download the episode on Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Anchor.com For more info on AmeriCorps NCCC: www.nationalservice.gov For more info on the Adventist Community Services Disaster Relief team and disaster warehousing: http://www.communityservices.org/disaster-response
Autumn's service year with AmeriCorps NCCC was the hardest, worst, and best thing she ever did. She shares what it was like to travel the country for ten months with a team of nine 18-24-year-olds, cleaning up after disasters, revitalizing neighborhoods and surviving gator infested waters while basically living out of a suitcase with AmeriCorps NCCC. “… it was something that was so wild, so adventurous, so unique, and it was with people that at this point I had just spent nine months with, and we all just had this experience that we were all going to remember for the rest of our lives."
