We are living in a world that seems to be unraveling at the seams - where chaos, polarization, and anxiety have become our default settings - we need a different way of being. Today, I'm sitting down with Eric Clayton, who's been wrestling with the question: What if peace isn't just the absence of conflict, but a transformative way of living? Eric's new book, "Finding Peace Here and Now," isn't another self-help manual. It's an invitation - a roadmap drawn from Ignatian spirituality that challenges us to look deeper. How do we build peace when everything around us seems designed to tear us apart? How do we find stillness in the storm, not by escaping the world, but by showing up differently? We'll explore how peace starts within us, how it's cultivated through compassion, creativity, and a willingness to see the humanity in everyone - even those we disagree with. This isn't about being passive. It's about a strength so profound it can disarm violence without raising a hand. If you're feeling overwhelmed, if you're searching for hope in a world that seems to have lost its way, this conversation is for you. So join us as we walk through what peace really means. Eric Clayton is an award-winning writer and author of three books on Ignatian spirituality and everyday living, including, "Finding Peace Here and Now: How Ignatian Spirituality Leads Us to Healing and Wholeness," "My Life with the Jedi: The Spirituality of Star Wars," and "Cannonball Moments: Telling Your Story, Deepening Your Faith." He has a children's book, "Our Mother, Too: Mary Embraces the World," which was co-authored by Shannon K. Evans releasing this year. Eric is the deputy director for communications at the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States where he manages the award-winning weekly column, "Now Discern This," guest hosts "AMDG: A Jesuit Podcast" and provides filming, writing and audio support for a range of multimedia projects. He has an MA in International Media from American University, a BA in International Studies and Creative Writing from Fairfield University and a graduate certificate in the Ignatian Tradition from Creighton University. Preaching for Palm Sunday, Anne Arabome, SSS offers a reflection on what makes Holy Week holy: "The holiness of Holy Week is in our story, writ large in the passion and triumph of Jesus of Nazareth. This week calls us to focus our gaze on Jesus and to follow him closely along the way. If we do so, we discover an immense treasure: a life of total self-giving that trumps selfishness; a gift of self-sacrificing love for the weakest and most vulnerable among us; a fullness of life that neither death nor despair can threaten, steal, or destroy."Sister Anne Arabome, SSS, is a member of the Sisters of Social Service in Los Angeles, California. She has served as the Associate Director of the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Marquette University and recently founded the Sophia Institute for Theological Studies and Spiritual Formation in Namibia. She holds a PhD in Systematic Theology from the University of Roehampton, UK, and a Doctor of Ministry in Spirituality from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/04132025 to learn more about Anne, to read her preaching text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.

John 10:27    Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE!    Fr Joseph shares with us about how he got involved in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and a few of the parallels he sees between CGS and Ignatian Spirituality.  Fr. Joseph Hill, SJ was born in Phoenix, AZ, raised in a Catholic family with his three brothers. At nine years old his family moved to England, where he attended Catholic schools and then the University of Oxford, earning a BA in theology in 2003. In 2004 he entered the Jesuit seminary in south Louisiana. Taking religious vows after two years, he was sent to study philosophy at Fordham University in New York, graduating with an MA in 2009. He then spent three years teaching theology at Jesuit High School, New Orleans. In 2012 he was sent to study theology at FAJE in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, earning a MA in 2014. Then he returned to Boston, earning a MEd at Boston College in 2015. He was ordained a Catholic priest on June 13th, 2015. For one year he worked at Parroquia San Ignacio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and served as chaplain of Academia San Ignacio parish elementary school. It was in Puerto Rico that he became familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. With the help of two excellent catechists and the school leaders, they implemented CGS Level I in the school. In August 2016 he moved to St. Louis, where he taught and worked in campus ministry at St. Louis University High School. During this time Fr. Hill, SJ completed a Doctor of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. Since July, 2021 he has lived in Tampa, FL, working as a Province vocation promoter.    Growing Seeds     Become a Growing Seed Donor HERE    Growing Seed Donor Form.  Access will also be granted to all existing recurring donors as of January 15, 2025. Hello Friends,I just wanted to send out a little video to let you know more about the Habits for the Spirit course that's starting up this week.So many of us fit into the cliché of getting all ramped up at the beginning of the New Year, only to feel deflated soon afterwards.Believe me, I fall into that category too, which is why I felt drawn to offer this course. Here are 3 things I'll be focusing on throughout the course:1) Small and manageable habits: Identifying very small and manageable habits that will be able to improve our day to day life. Sometimes it's the small and easy changes that can actually make the most difference – but we need to give ourselves the space and time to reflect on how to go about doing that.2) Holistic habits body, mind, and spirit: in the habits workbook I sent out recently you'll see that I find that overlap and intersection really important and we often focus too much on one or the other (body, mind, or spirit) and found ourselves imbalanced, and sometimes that can be more depleting rather than life-giving3) Crossover between sacred and secular – in the resilience trainings I've taken over the past few years, I've realized how important the connections are between what we're learning about the body, the brain, the nervous system, and how it connects with our spiritual lives. In fact, spirituality and spiritual practices are a resource for our wellbeing – they might be different practices for each one of us, but they are a huge source of balance, joy, strength, hope.In the course, I'll be drawing from resources for spirituality such as Celtic and Ignatian spirituality, resilience skills, productivity mindset. In the modules I'll be covering- stillness and silence that helps us listen to ourselves and to God- tending to our living spaces and environments in a way that weaves into our spiritual life- movement that not only builds strength but clears our minds and lifts our spirits- finding ways to introduce more beauty into our days- the power of word to enrich our lives, whether that be through writing or reading- nourishing our bodies with what's beneficial to us, that energizes us and makes us feel most ourselves- connecting with people – communities with like minds, people who are different from us and have a lot to teach us, connecting with others as a part of our spiritual practiceThere's still time for you to join us for this course! This is the last announcement I'll make about it, but what I'll do is anyone who wants to become a paid subscriber before Friday (when the first module will go out) and lets me know they're interested, I'll add you to the list.Have a great day, and may you feel the light of Epiphany shining into this New Year.KiranHabits for the Spirit8-Week Digital CourseAre you wondering how you can flourish in 2025? This is a conversation about racism and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Put more precisely, this is a conversation about how the Spiritual Exercises might better form us to understand and push back against the repercussions of racism in America. The question that frames this conversation is one that comes from the global Society of Jesus. At the last General Congregation—GC 36—when Jesuits from around the world gathered to elect a new superior general and examine the most pressing issues facing our world today, this question was raised: Why do the Exercises not change us as deeply as we should hope? In short, how does injustice and racism and violent persist, even after so many of us have made the Exercises? The Exercises, after all, are meant to change our hearts and minds, to help us better understand God and who God desires that we be with and through community. This question is at the heat of a new book from Liturgical Press. It's called “Praying for Freedom: Racism and Ignatian Spirituality in America.” It's a collection of essays and reflections that attempt to wrestle with this question and try to envision how we might build a more just and compassionate society. We have three guests today. Dr. Laurie Cassidy, the editor of the anthology, currently teaches in the Christian Spirituality program at Creighton University. She is an award-winning author and editor, and has been engaged in the ministry of spiritual direction for more than 30 years. Our two other guests, Elise Gower and Justin White, both contributed chapters to this book, both reflecting on their own experiences of a retreat called “The God of Us All: Praying with Black Spirituality.” They both share with us personal and powerful insights into their own prayer life. Elise has an extensive background in Ignatian spirituality, higher education and leadership, having served as associate director of Contemplative Leaders in Action—a formation program for young adults—and at Loyola University Maryland in the offices of Campus Ministry and the Center for Community Service and Justice, and more. Justin White has a long career in Jesuit education, having taught theology for 8 years at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore and having held several roles at Loyola Blakefield, most recently as a counselor for middle school students. If you have ever prayed through the Spiritual Exercises or if that's something you hope to do, this conversation will add a helpful frame to your prayer and challenge you to examine those places in our lives where we are resistant to God's love—those places where we are not free. Our prayer today is one of freedom—as we begin this conversation, let us pray that we all may recognize those places of unfreedom in our lives, and take the necessary steps to step beyond those obstacles. https://litpress.org/Products/6791/Praying-for-Freedom

Welcome to the latest episode of Soul Care for Therapists. In this episode, titled "The Transformation of Spiritual Direction," we have the pleasure of hosting Dan Kane, an experienced spiritual director who has been involved in Dawn's life for several years. Dawn Gabriel shares a bit about her personal journey in a school for spiritual direction. Dan, the leader of the school, started out as a civil engineer turned missionary engineer, and how his experiences led him to the practice of spiritual direction. Stay tuned till the end of the episode where Dan leads us into a guided spiritual exercise “The Practice of Being Know.”  Meet Dan Kane Dan is a spiritual director and supervisor who teaches with the Sustainable Faith Schools of Spiritual Direction. An enthusiast of Ignatian Spirituality, Dan has also been trained by Sustainable Faith to accompany individuals through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, a deeply formational journey for those hungry to grow in their experience of God. He is also a pilgrimage guide along the Camino de Ignaciano, a recently developed route in northeastern Spain that highlights the journey Ignatius of Loyola made in the year 1522 and invites modern-day pilgrims to a growing understanding of God's direction for one's life. Over the last 20+ years, Dan has served churches as an elder, staff member, and volunteer ministry leader, worked full-time with a few different mission organizations, and in 2022 began serving with InterVarsity USA as an Associate Director of Spiritual Formation. Understanding Spiritual Direction Dawn asks Dan to shed light on the difference between spiritual direction and Christian therapy. Dan refers to a definition provided by William Barry and William Connolly in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction, saying, "We define spiritual direction then as the help given by one believer to another that enables the latter to pay attention to God's personal communication...to grow in intimacy with this God and to live out the consequences of the relationship." He emphasizes the importance of companionship and helping individuals become more aware of God's presence in their everyday lives. Spiritual direction involves noticing, exploring, reflecting, and responding to the ways in which God communicates and reveals Himself. Dan also highlights the focus on the present and the desire to become more like Christ through experiential encounters with God. Cultivating Heightened Awareness "Did you know that God is present in every moment of your life, even the ordinary ones?" It's true! To experience God's presence, start by paying attention to the small wonders around you. Notice the vibrant colors of the flowers, the gentle breeze on your face, or the laughter of your friends. As the speaker in the episode suggests, "When you're brushing your teeth or playing with your pet, remember that God is there with you, loving you and guiding you." By developing a heightened awareness, you'll begin to see the fingerprints of God in the beauty and simplicity of your everyday experiences. The Transformative Power of Spiritual Direction Dawn shares her personal experience of attending Dan's school, where she learned not only about spiritual direction but also engaged in experiential practices that deepened her intimacy with God. She explains that therapy often focuses on coping skills and rearranging the "furniture" in the lower room of our lives, while spiritual direction delves into the upper room of the soul, exploring the spiritual realm and experiencing God on a deeper level. Dawn expresses how her journey toward becoming a spiritual director has been transformational, not just informational. Dan expands on this distinction, saying that while knowledge and information about God are important, true transformation occurs when that knowledge shapes our encounters with and experiences of God. Spiritual direction aims to help individuals become more like Christ, cultivating intimacy, and living out the implications of their relationship with God. Through the episode Dawn and Dan explore the differences between knowing about God and experiencing God's presence.  Experience God with a Personal Connection The conversation emphasizes that experiencing God's presence goes beyond mere knowledge. It highlights the importance of developing a personal relationship with God. Similarly, knowledge about God involves understanding concepts and teachings, but experiencing God's presence involves a deeper connection that touches the heart and soul. Knowing about God is good, but experiencing God's love and guidance in our everyday lives is even better. It's like reading a book about your favorite historical figure versus actually meeting them and feeling their strength and kindness. Experiencing God with a Personal Encounter Where is a place where you experience God? It is not always in a church or place of worship. It can be doing a service project, in a forest, on a walk, or having deep conversations with people. While knowledge about God involves understanding concepts and teachings through learning and study, experiencing the presence of God requires a personal encounter and direct experience. It surpasses intellectual understanding and touches the depths of our hearts and souls. Learning about God is like studying a beautiful painting, and understanding its colors and composition. Experiencing God's presence, on the other hand, is like stepping into the painting, feeling the warmth of the sun, smelling the flowers, and hearing the whispers of the wind. Where can you step into an experience with God?  Engaging in Experiential Learning Dawn reflects on the structure of Dan's teaching and the experiential nature of their learning environment. She describes how they engaged in exercises that facilitated a deeper presence before God, allowing space to notice thoughts, feelings, and even bodily sensations. Through this process, participants were able to share their experiences and learn from one another. Dan adds that this collective learning enhances the awareness of God's presence and communication, fostering a hunger for a more intimate and deep relationship with Him. Dawn recalls a particularly impactful exercise in which they listened to one another's stories, paying attention to how God had shown up in their lives. This exercise highlighted the importance of being listened to and receiving observations from others, helping individuals recognize God's presence in their own stories. Experiencing God Through Sharing Stories and Encounters Imagine the excitement of sharing your own stories of encountering God with others! When you open your heart and share these experiences, you not only inspire others but also deepen your own understanding of God's presence. It could be as simple as sharing a moment when you felt God's comfort during a challenging time or when you experienced joy and gratitude for the blessings in your life. By listening to other's stories as well, you'll learn to recognize God's hand at work in the lives of those around you. So, let your voice be heard, and let your stories of faith shine brightly! Experiencing God Through Seeking Spiritual Companionship Embarking on a spiritual journey is always better with a companion by your side. The speaker encourages us to find a spiritual director or a trusted mentor who can guide and support us along the way. This person can be someone you trust, like a teacher, a family member, or a community leader. They will help you understand and interpret your encounters with God, providing valuable insights and encouragement. Remember, you're not alone in this journey of faith. Your spiritual companion will walk alongside you, nurturing your connection with God and helping you navigate the wonders of everyday life. Live a Life Expecting to Experience the Presence of God Dan Kane enlightens us about the practice of spiritual direction and its transformative power. He emphasizes the distinction between informational knowledge and experiential encounters with God, highlighting the importance of living out the implications of our relationship with Him. Dawn shares her personal journey and the impact of engaging in experiential learning in Dan's school. The episode concludes with a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore our own experiences of God more deeply. Tips for Increasing Your Spiritual Awareness Take time to notice and reflect on how you experience God in your everyday life. Share your experiences and stories with others, paying attention to how God has shown up in your life. Seek out companionship and support from a spiritual director or fellow believers to help you grow in intimacy with God. Engage in experiential practices that facilitate a deeper presence before God, allowing space to notice thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. Foster a hunger for a more intimate and deep relationship with God through collective learning and sharing experiences with others. Preaching for the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jessica Kerber, aci, offers a reflection on resistant hope: "It is interesting, then, in our Gospel reading, that when Jesus speaks about the need to be persistent in prayer, he does not pull out the example of Moses, but rather, he turns to the widow: a poor widow who has not actually seen manna falling from heaven, a poor widow who has not witnessed water being poured forth from a rock, and a poor widow who is not watching the Israelite forces defeat the great forces of Amalek's army. She is a poor widow, rather, who desires that justice be done for her…in her daily life, in the smallness of the life. This is the example that Jesus pulls out. Here too we experience - in the daily, in something that relates much more to us and to the people that we know and love – Jesus speaking of this need of continued persistence and resistant hope. For this poor widow must resist three things..." Sister Jessica Kerber is a Handmaid of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an international congregation of Women Religious with Ignatian Spirituality and a charism of Eucharistic Reparation. Preaching for the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Laurie Cassidy offers a reflection on the familiar parable of the prodigal son: "Don't these family dynamics feel familiar? Aren't these circumstances the very places where we feel lost and stuck. It is tempting to want the parable to spell out a resolution, to offer a roadmap home, give an assurance that in the end 'we can all get along' if we just follow the divine directions. But could it be that parable invites us to experience something better and beyond our imagining -- God's compassion right at the very places we feel lost, vulnerable, stuck, and powerless? Jesus seems to be offering us compassion as 'a way out of no way'." Laurie Cassidy, Ph.D. is a theologian, anti-racist activist and spiritual director. How do you heal from trauma—whether individual, familial, or collective? Can Christian spirituality help? The tumultuous time we find ourselves in serves up regular doses of the suffering and pain of others—war wages destruction, migrants are left to die of heat exposure, hate crimes based in bigotry and fear of ethnicity or orientation or identity leave us all feeling numbed to our humanity; and with the aid of our phones, we even risk a dependency relationship with that trauma. It's constantly leveraged for political gain, power, money, or ugly fame. If we see the game of human culture as a zero-sum struggle for power, someone's political gain is always another's loss. Someone's joy another's sorrow. How are we supposed to find our human siblings? Add to this the unspoken trauma that haunts so many of us—myself, you listeners, that person in your life who seems strong and impervious to harm—we all carry our lifetime's worth of trauma even if we act like it's not there. But as Bessel Vander Kolk's best selling title captures so well, even when your conscious mind does that surreptitious work to ignore, deny, suppress, or forget trauma—"the body knows the score." But perhaps so too the spirit knows the score.Today, Bo Karen Lee joins Ryan McAnnally-Linz for a conversation on trauma and Ignatian spirituality. Bo is Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology and Christian Formation at Princeton Theological Seminary, and has written and taught contemplative theology, prayer, and the connection between spirituality and social justice. This conversation is a beautiful and sensitive—and sometimes quite raw—exploration of trauma and the human experience. But the clarity and courage reflected in Bo's presentation of how trauma threatens the human mind and body is matched by a powerful empathy and peace, as she reflects on moving through a spiritual journey from victim or bystander of trauma to a beloved, seen, known, and loved by God and other deeply caring helpers. The discussion that follows offers a concise introduction to the Ignatian spiritual tradition, as well as a holistic comment on how trauma at the individual, genetic, family, and national level can be acknowledged, addressed, and acted on.This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. A Word from Our Outpost: Faithful Formation for Catholic Missionary Disciples on Prayer, Evangelization, Scripture, and Disci

This is the second of two classes that Joseph taught to new missionaries this summer. Ignatian contemplation, or the imaginative entering into a scene of scripture, is a classic way to pray, and we hope that this helps you!

As a writer of spiritual nonfiction, one might wonder: Do any of these seemingly random stories, these anecdotes and details and bits of personal history, matter to anyone but me? What good is all this storytelling doing for other people? After all, the goal of good spiritual nonfiction isn't to be another entry in a personal diary; it's meant to help all people glimpse something new of their own spirituality. Our guest today helps us tackle this question — and many more. Christine Marie Eberle is the author of two books of daily meditations based on her own true personal stories. She sees her personal mission like this: she passionately connects spirituality, Scripture and everyday life. And with 26 years of experience as a campus minister under her belt, not to mention her current work as a retreat leader, it's clear she has a wealth of stories to draw from to live out this mission. Her latest book, "Finding God Abiding" from Woodhall Press, drops us into these personal, at times humorous, at times heartbreaking, stories from her life. And it is through the utterly specific details of her life that we are drawn closer to God in our own. After all, God deals with us in the specific, not the abstract. Today's conversation with Christine is all about Ignatian storytelling, what it means to tell and share stories from the tradition of Ignatian spirituality. Hopefully you find something in this conversation that helps you explore your story in a new way — and maybe, share with others. Kathy Powell is currently the Creative Director, working with Becky Eldredge, LLC | Ignatian Ministries. But ever since the loss of her first child, Francis, through miscarriage, Kathy has dedicated a great deal of time and energy to walking with families who have had to lay their babies to rest all to soon. In this episode, we hear Kathy's story. We learn from her how to walk with others. And this is important because there's a good chance you know someone whose pregnancy has ended in a loss. Maybe you're that person. And if so, this episode is for you. St. Catherine of Sweden, whose feast day is March 24, is the patron saint of miscarriage. Kathy tells us a little about Catherine and how her legacy helped in a moment of darkness. We end our episode in prayer: Kathy leads us through an examen for a day of crisis. Whether that day was last week or ten years ago, whether the crisis was a miscarriage or something else, take this time for prayer. If you like the Examen of a Day of Crisis, we invite you to visit the Guided Audio Ignatian Prayer Library (https://beckyeldredge.com/guided-audio), made possible through the Ignatian Media Lab, a program of the Jesuit Conference of the US & Canada. With over 30 guided audio prayers, including an extended recording of the Examen of the Day of Crisis (https://soundcloud.com/beldredge98/examen-of-a-day-of-crisis?in=beldredge98/sets/you-are-not-alone), this is a resource for your personal prayer and one you can share with others. We know this topic is heavy. Please see the links below for more prayer & miscarriage resources.
