In this episode, I am so excited to have Ann Shen (@anndanger) on the podcast. Ann Shen is an illustrator, letterer, and best-selling author based in Los Angeles. With over 10 years of industry experience, Ann has worked with major clients, such as Disney, Adobe, NY Times and she's designed everything from theme park artwork to fashion doll packaging. She has written and illustrated 3 best-selling books and has been featured on Forbes, Huffington Post, and many other major press journals. I first came to learn about Ann and her work during my year of career sabbatical, when I decided to embark on my own journey of becoming, to find and reclaim my true self. On that journey, I found her books, especially Legendary Ladies, 50 Goddesses to Empower and Inspire You, to have helped me reclaim my own femininity and personal power as a woman. I also fell in love with her illustrations that captured the magic of our imagination, creative play, and beauty. In this episode, we will be diving into her own journey of becoming and how she gave herself the permission to CREATE HER OWN PATH. In addition to writing and illustrating three best-selling books: Bad Girls Throughout History (2016), Legendary Ladies (2018), Nevertheless, She Wore It (2020), all published by Chronicle Books, Ann will be releasing her 4th book, called Revolutionary Women, on October 18th!! We talk about the export of American pop-culture and its influence globally. We debate if the impact of social media on society and individuals is ultimately more negative than positive. We discuss the decay of news media and journalistic integrity, its prioritizing of speed over truth, and its affect on our world view, emotions and relationships. ______________________ If you enjoy this show don't forget to leave a rating! We are here for racial justice and loved reading about Starr as she decides to fight the injustice in her life. There are some very significant differences between the book and movie that change whole the meaning of T.H.U.G.L.I.F.E. as it affects the Carter family. We missed the references to Fresh Prince that were constant in the book and think that Chris got the “girlfriend treatment.” Episode Drink: Milk Fortify your body so you can go out and protest for longer. Discover your creative, feminine power with my free online quiz at http://majo.coHave you ever had the urge to follow the opposite of what you learned in school? That’s a theme for my guest Ann Shen – an illustrator and author of Bad Girls Throughout History and Legendary Ladies, books that depict women as they are: complex, funny, dark and everywhere in between. In fact, her book Bad Girls Throughout History resonated so much that it has even been picked up by Universal Cable Productions to become a show. A daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Ann calls herself a reformed goody two shoes who creates art that empowers women to be their authentic badass selves. She combines incredible artistic talent with a high degree of business sense and shows us that choosing your own path does not have to mean depending on your parents, spouse, or whoever to survive. While her professors in art school pushed the students to all create very masculine, serious art, she went in the opposite direction – her own style that markets to women in a really fun, whimsical way, and of course in the time of Instagram, this style blew up. You can find her empowering, delightfully illustrated, books on Amazon and in stores like Target so definitely check them out after you hear her story. Also as a heads up, Ann and I met and recorded at the lovely all-female co-working space The Wing in Los Angeles so the audio is a little busy and echo-ey at times and I apologize in advance, but I have a feeling that you’ll be so engaged in our conversation, you will barely notice! Plus, y’all know me: progress over perfection. Highlighted ExcerptAnn: The art school I chose to go to was very militant and demanding. Majo: Okay so what were people telling you was the right kind of work and what did you discover?Ann: So in school, it was very trendy at the time to think about editorial illustration as the career, like the ultimate career. And you do like New York editorial illustration stuff that’s like in the New York Times, The New Yorker, like just very serious, beautiful. A lot of it is conceptual or just technically very, it just looks a certain way. And most of it was a very male-dominated view. Majo: Okay, and what did you discover was like what you really wanted to do and move into?Ann: That’s my favorite question because it wasn’t something that was really presented to me as an option and then I discovered this later was I just wanted to do stuff for women. Stuff that I was interested in, stuff that was floral or decorative or representative. Like just having something that’s like “oh, this is just a beautiful painting”. It either had to be a beautiful fine art oil painting or it had to have like a really brilliant concept behind it for it to be considered “good” in school. And then I left and I was like “Oh, it’s good enough for it just to be a beautiful thing that brings people joy”. Discover your creative, feminine power with my free online quiz at http://majo.co

I am so excited to have author and illustrator Ann Shen back on the podcast for the third time. On the surface, our conversation is about routines—how to find them, how to keep them, and how to stay committed to them. But once we dug deeper, I realized that this conversation was actually about how to find practices that help you release anxiety and then how to allow those practices to be a priority for you in your life. Without apologizing for what you need and who you are. Oh, right. That apologizing piece is huge, isn't it? Enjoy, enjoy and if you have any thoughts on routines and rituals, I'd love to hear them! Ann Shen is an illustrator and writer and the creative genius behind the new book Bad Girls Throughout History. In this episode, we talk about how Ann started making art in her mid-20's in a decision that took her out of her "looks good on paper" career and put her into full-time art school! We also talked about her new book, why she decided to focus on female trailblazers, and some of the surprising lessons she learned about "history" along the way. If you're curious about what it takes to create a book like this, go back to art school as an adult, or rewrite (or reinterpret) stories, this episode is for you! Bonus: Ann will also be back on the podcast next week for Part 2!
