    Ivy Insights

The Fishnet Flix podcast is an absolute gem that has been flying under the radar for far too long. As a longtime listener, I am thrilled for their relaunch and cannot wait to see what they have in store. Blaire and Marie's extensive knowledge of style on the big screen never fails to impress me. Their passion for costume design shines through each episode, especially when they bring in incredible guests like Mona May and Mandi Line, who share their experiences working as costume designers. From classic 90s films to cult favorites, Fishnet Flix covers a wide range of movies that will satisfy any fashion and film enthusiast. Overall, this podcast is an obsession-worthy listen that deserves more recognition.

One of the best aspects of The Fishnet Flix podcast is the depth of knowledge displayed by Blaire and Marie when discussing fashion in film. Their insights into the intricacies of costume design are both fascinating and eye-opening. They uncover hidden details and Easter eggs within outfits, making listeners appreciate the artistry behind wardrobe choices even more. Additionally, their selection of movies is impeccable, covering both beloved classics and lesser-known gems. The interviews with industry professionals provide valuable insight into the world of costume design.

While there aren't many negatives to highlight about The Fishnet Flix podcast, one aspect that could be improved upon is the length of episodes. As a fan who can't get enough of Blaire and Marie's discussions, I often find myself craving longer episodes to fully indulge in their witty banter and insightful analyses. Sometimes it feels like the episodes fly by too quickly. However, this is a minor complaint given the high quality content provided in each episode.

In conclusion, The Fishnet Flix podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of fashion and film. Blaire and Marie's infectious enthusiasm combined with their extensive knowledge make for an engaging and entertaining listening experience. Whether you're a die-hard cinephile or a fashion lover, this podcast offers something for everyone. I highly recommend giving it a listen and joining the community of dedicated fans eagerly awaiting each new episode.

Happy 25th anniversary to the 1999 classic, 10 Things I Hate About You! We've talked about Kim Tillman's work on the pod before (Doppelgänger, Wild Things). This time, she created thoughtful and fashionable costumes for the Seattle teens in this reimagined Taming of the Shrew. Kim dressed Julia Stiles's character in low-slung pants, cropped camo, and Frankenflops, opposite her sister's (Larisa Oleynik) ultra-girly style. Heath Ledger (in his breakthrough role) got the stylish bad-boy treatment in custom-dyed tank tops and PVC pants. We also discuss the iconic prom looks, name the film's Surprise Style Icon, revisit Andrew Keegan's alleged cult (and then fantasize about becoming cult leaders ourselves). Dolly's outfits are a serious boudoir chic feast for the eyes, with ruffles, lace, feathers, sequins, and floor-length “ringmaster red” garments, costumed by the late, great Theodora Van Runkle (Troop Beverly Hills). One day, Ginger gets her period for the first time, AND bit by a werewolf, and becomes a real ravenous b****! There are a lot of parallels between this and Jennifer's Body, such as the opposites-attract dynamic between the sisters, the blood-hungry transformation, and even the makeover moment reveal that happens during an iconic slow-motion, walking down the hallway scene. We are absolutely thrilled to have the fabulous Bri Luna of The Hoodwitch on the podcast today to talk about one of her favorite movies, She-Devil! The 1989 flick stars Roseanne Barr as a jilted housewife who devises a long-con revenge on her cheating husband and the romance novelist who stole him (Meryl Streep in one of her most underrated roles). Costume designer Albert Wolsky takes the characters through a fantastical voyage of clothes, beginning with caricatures of extreme femininity and stereotypes of the forgotten housewife, then into a transformation that is both sartorial and spiritual. It's a makeover like no other! Bri opens our eyes to the movie's many unseen layers: looking at it through a magickal lens, and how the two main characters can be interpreted as Lilith and Eve. It's so much more about revenge (one of our favorite genres); it also explores the dichotomy of womanhood, female repression and oppression, and the power of the underdog. You're going to want to eat an eclair in the bathtub while you tune into this extremely Taurus, Libra, and Scorpio-esque movie now! We have fun breaking down the looks of our favorite staunch character-slash-style icon while comparing to the OG Grey Gardens documentary from the 1970s, and then somehow go from talking about the Edith Beales to guessing the zodiac sign of Jigsaw from the Saw movies? Don't ask…just tune in. Bye! 200 Cigarettes (1999)

Break out the crab dip, baby! November may have just begun, but we've already got our minds on New Year's Eve—specifically 1982, when a little ol' movie called 200 Cigarettes was set. The movie came out in 1999 and featured numerous familiar faces, many who were just lil baby celebrities at the time (Kate Hudson, Christina Ricci, Ben Affleck, Courtney Love, Paul Rudd, and SO many more). We follow all of the characters during one fateful NYE night as they make their way across New York City to get to a party. The ‘fits are FAB and costumed by thee Susan Lyall who we talked about in our Empire Records and also did Molly's Game, the Trial of the Chicago 7, Being the Ricardos, and more. Listen, if you've ever found yourself compelled to don leopard print, or a furry coat, tights and heels as a New Year's Eve outfit, this movie might have been why.  Off topic rambles include the Mothman (hit Marie up if you are a Mothman luva), the Jeepers Creepers man…excuse me, but how did he get a personalized license plate?, lesser known early aughts teen thrillers (hint: we MAY have a themed month on the docket), and we butt heads over imitation crab. To close out Vampire Month here on Fishnet Flix, we've got a new gothic romance film in the lineup, and one that will no doubt inspire some new fangbangers to come out of the woodwork. The Invitation (2022) is about Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), a New Yorker who finds out she has long-lost family members so she travels to the English countryside to meet them. There, she also meets the hunkety-hunk lord of the manor, Mista Walter De Ville (Thomas Doherty). As Evie eases into her British aristocratic surroundings, her outfits go cool, artsy, NYC-funky to stunningly elaborate, thanks to costume designer Danielle Knox. Spoiler: We loved them all! The movie is described in one review as one part Get Out, one part Ready or Not, and one part Dracula, so if that also tickles your fang-cy, give it a watch and tune into our episode! Obsess Much includes the new Interview With the Vampire TV show and the new M3GAN trailer with her killer moves. We also discuss our favorite Spice Girl, Lodge 49 (RIP), the baseless rumors of a Death Becomes Her remake with Lady Gaga, horn out over Thomas Doherty, then discover that he's Harry Hook from The Descendants, and declare that IF "they" ever dare try to remake Witches of Eastwick, he'd make the perfect Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson's devilish role).  For visuals of the costumes, follow us on Instagram at @fishnetflixpod and TikTok @fishnetflix !
