How Media Is Fueling A Risky Sexual Practice Among Teens

In today's episode, Dr. Delaney Ruston talks with author Peggy Orenstein about a media-fueled risky sexual practice that is happening among some teens today — choking, also called sexual strangulation. Orenstein, who has spent many years researching sexuality among youth for her books “Girls and Sex” and “Boys and Sex,” investigated the topic of sexual choking for a New York Times article that was published last month. Today, Orenstein shares some of her findings from that investigation, including the influence of pornography and other media on this new trend.  What are the psychological and physical risks of this practice? And what are ways to have productive conversations with young people on this and related topics? This episode also includes a 19-year-old discussing her concerns about sexual choking. This episode is intended for adult audiences.  Featured Expert Peggy Orenstein Research References The Troubling Trend in Teen Sex -New York Times Article by Peggy Orenstein What is rough sex, who does it, and who likes it? Her man used to enjoy chewing tobacco, and it messed up his teeth. He has quit at her behest, but now he really needs to see a dentist. She doesn't want to shame him for his nasty mouth, but she also doesn't want to kiss him. How can she gently guide him into a dentists chair? A trans man is having a hard time finding women to date him. He insists he's a catch, but the ladies aren't biting. Why?  On the Magnum, Dan welcomes Peggy Orenstein, author of eight books including Boys & Sex and Girls & Sex. Her essay in the New York Times about the ubiquity of erotic choking among young people went viral, freaking parents out. She and Dan talk about the dangers (both physical and emotional) of choking and then move on to more pleasant subjects: Like the Madonna/whore complex! And wanting someone you cannot have.  Lastly, a gay man has a wet & messy kink. Lube wrestling? Let's go! Pie in the face? Yes please! Holy Baby Bump, talk about the best sex of your life! For readers of Peggy Orenstein and Rebecca Traister, an authoritative, big think look at pornography in all its facets - historical, religious, and cultural. In the 1960s, sex researchers Masters and Johnson declared the end of the fake orgasm. Nearly two decades later, in 1982, evangelical activist Tim LaHaye foretold that the entire pornography industry would soon be driven out of business. Neither prediction proved true. Instead, with the rise of the internet, pornography saturates the American conscience more than ever and has reshaped our understanding of sexuality, relationships, media, and even the nature of addiction.Dr. Kelsy Burke has spent the last five years researching and interviewing internet pornography's opponents and its sympathizers. In The Pornography Wars, Burke does a deep dive into the long history of pornography in America and then turns her gaze on our present society to examine the ways this industry touches on the most intimate parts of American lives. She offers a complete understanding of the major players in the debates around porn's place in society: everyone from sex workers, activists, therapists, religious leaders, and consumers. In doing so, she addresses and debunks the myths that surround porn and porn usage while showing how everything from the way we teach children about sex to the legal protections for what can be published is tied up in the deeply complicated battles over pornography.Sweeping, savvy, and deeply researched, The Pornography Wars is a necessary and comprehensive new look at pornography and American life.Kelsy Burke is an award-winning sociologist and author of Christians under Covers. She has spent the last decade studying how people talk about sex in America and is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her work has been supported by multiple grants and fellowships, including an award from the National Science Foundation, and her writing has appeared in The Washington Post The Huffington Post, Newsweek, Salon, and Slate.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781635577365

#62 Are Women Entitled To Pleasure?

The Good, The Bad, and The Whoreable

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2023 51:13

Scarlett posted a video about women's pleasure in the GBW Discord server and discusses some of the important points with Vixen and Lila. The video in question is a TED Talk from Peggy Orenstein, who has spent time investigating what girls are taught to feel about their sexuality at a young age. Bringing up this video launches Scarlett and the girls into a conversation about the orgasm gap and why women are less likely to expect or anticipate pleasure from a sexual encounter than men are. Scarlett shares that women statistically feel entitled to sex but not to receiving pleasure from sex, to which both Lila and Scarlett anecdotally agree. Vixen, however, has had an opposite experience–she describes herself as hyper-orgasmic with her partners and has only had very few sexual encounters that did not end in orgasm. The girls begin to break down the potential reasons for their differing sexual profiles, beginning with their experiences with sexual education in grade school. The girls take turns discussing their childhood experiences with their sexuality and the education methods their schools and parents followed on the matter. Scarlett also brings up the connection between pain and pleasure during sex and why so many more women report feeling pain during sex than men do. The girls discuss the lack of education they received as young women on their own anatomy–leading them to believe that men are even less equipped for truly understanding female pleasure. Scarlett shares some of the most crucial advice for men when having sex with their female partners: allowing space for a woman to feel relaxed and without pressure to orgasm is the best way to help her achieve that pleasure during sex. This leads to Vixen schooling the girls on the variety of different types of orgasms and approaches to sex, as well as her own advice to Scarlett and Lila and other women who have a harder time achieving orgasm during sex. Before the end of the conversation, Scarlett brings it way back with a history lesson showing just how long women's pleasure has been debated. Sound off in Discord! What do you think–where does the shame surrounding women's pleasure come from? And where does the orgasm gap really come from? Purity culture? Lack of educational resources? Bad communication? We are on Discord! If you ever wanted to know what it felt like to be in a GBW group chat, this is the place to find out! “Women spent so much time in the ancient world spinning, like they spent all their time, any spare moment. And spinsters were not bad, it wasn't bad to be a spinster the way we think of it, spinsters were, you know, respected members of households, single women who didn't have the responsibilities of husbands or children, who could spin more, and make money. And, you know, you think about things like marauding around when they sailed across the Atlantic and their little hats and everything, but you don't think about the sails. You don't think like, who made those sails? Who made the thread that made all those sails? Who do you think did that? How many years did it take those women to make one lousy sail, you know, I mean, it took two years of women's labor to make a sail. So the kind of invisible labor of women in all of that…” So says, Peggy Orenstein, a celebrated journalist who is acclaimed for her insightful analysis of gender, sexuality, and identity issues. She's written several best-sellers about the topic, including Girls & Sex and Boys & Sex. But that's not what we're going to talk about today. During COVID, Peggy took a right turn, and an entirely different type of book emerged, one that is actually just as radical. In Unraveling, she explores the depths of her grief and tackles societal issues through the process of making a sweater from scratch—including shearing a sheep and carding and dying the wool—ultimately discovering the power of creativity and connection. While sharing her journey of making the sweater, which is actually riveting, she also unravels the rich history and culture of spinning and weaving while exposing the sobering reality of fast fashion and its detrimental impact on our environment. This is a book about something that sounds simple, yet is actually about everything, offering the potential for a genuine shift in how we perceive the world.  MORE FROM PEGGY ORENSTEIN: Unraveling: What I Learned about Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World's Ugliest Sweater Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hook-Ups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape Don't Call Me a Princess: Essays on Girls, Women, Sex and Life Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of New Girlie-Girl Culture Peggy Orenstein's Website Follow Peggy on Instagram and Twitter To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Life lessons are where you find them. Peggy Orenstein found them in her quest to build a sweater from scratch. When I say that Peggy created a sweater from scratch, I mean wrestling a sheep to the ground and relieving it of its wool. Carding said wool by hand while Zooming with her father, who sometimes knew who she was. Spinning that lovely fluff, with all the typical push-pull-stop-go of a beginning spinner. Dyeing the yarn with colors from her backyard and beyond. After that, knitting the sweater was a breeze, sort of. (And despite the title of her book, Unraveling: What I Learned About Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World's Ugliest Sweater, it's definitely not the world's ugliest.) But there were more lessons to be taken from this year-long odyssey. Lessons about fast fashion, regenerative agriculture, ancient goddesses, a planet at risk. The list goes on. The handmade thread, metaphorical or physical, ties together our human history, not neatly but with complicated and important entanglements. Unraveling is not a how-to book. If you know much about any of the steps in the process of turning wool into wardrobe, you will smile or sometimes wince at the author's fearless approach. But so much to think about! She gives us so much to think about! Visit the Long Thread Podcast website (https://longthreadmedia.com/podcast). During the darkest days of the pandemic lots of people read books, played video games, mastered Zoom (sorta) or tried their hand baking sourdough. Peggy Orenstein did those things, too, but she also handmade her very own sweater and then WROTE a book about it. So what, you may be thinking, lots of people knit. No. She really made her own sweater. Like she found a sheep (well, three actually) and learned to shear them for their fleece in order to make her own yarn kind of sweater. But, truly, that was only part of the experience she shares in her book Unraveling: What I Learned About Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World's Ugliest Sweater. She also learned a lot about herself, her family, her grief and her grit in the process.  If you have questions or guest suggestions, Ali would love to hear from you. A couple of years ago, penned in by the pandemic, writer Peggy Orenstein “felt an inexplicable, unquenchable urge to confront a large animal while wielding a razor-sharp, juddering clipper; shear off its fleece; and figure out how to make it into a sweater.” Her new memoir, “Unraveling,” tells the story of that journey – from shearing a sheep named Martha and spinning and dyeing her wool, to designing and knitting that sweater. Woven through, Orenstein reckons with the environmental and cultural toll of the textile industry, the history of women's work, the evolution of fairy tales and her own midlife change and loss. We also do a bit of a deep dive on masculinity and how just now Levi feels like he is choosing what that means for himself. Today on the show, we are talking all about dicks. Like why is erectile dysfunction so common? Can you become dependent on Viagra? And can you still have sex after you ejaculate?  To help me answer your questions about dicks, I share my interview with sex therapist and clinical sexual health educator, Paul Nelson. Paul emphasizes that sexual health education should address the entire self and how for many cisgender men, they think it's only about their dicks. We also talk about how common erectile dysfunction is and the work Paul does as part of Maze Men's Health. Resources from the Show! The new Pixar film, "Turning Red," sparked debate online over the "appropriate" way to discuss puberty and menstruation with young girls. Peggy Orenstein, gender issues expert and author of the book, Girls And Sex, joins for a conversation about helping kids understand the changes their bodies go through, and how euphemisms like "monthly visitor" and "Aunt Flo" can be damaging to internalize.

Today's conversation started with noticing how often women from Christian background find themselves disconnected from their bodies, desire, turn-on and pleasure. We talk about how this disconnection brings about difficulty identifying consent within oneself and makes it confusing to figure out if you're doing something for someone else more than for yourself. Finally, we offer our best practices for getting in touch with your turn-on. While this episode uses primarily language referring to women, what we talk about can be relevant to people of any gender. Lurie mentions the book Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape by Peggy Orenstein.
