In this episode of the Landmark Recovery Podcast, we are joined by the inspiring Judge Mary Beth O'Connor, who shares her incredible journey from addiction to the bench. We delve into her life story, discussing how she has recovered not only from substance abuse but also from trauma and anxiety. Judge O'Connor provides insight into the importance of addressing multiple issues to sustain recovery and highlights the power of determination in achieving goals and dreams once held back by addiction. After the break, we explore the significance of proper evaluations and learn about LifeRing Secular Recovery, an alternative approach to recovery that emphasizes "Recovery by Any Means for Anyone." - Mary Beth O'Connor has been sober since 1994 and has used her recovery as a foundation for remarkable achievements. Six years into her recovery journey, she attended Berkeley Law, went on to work at a large firm, and then litigated class actions for the federal government. In 2014, she was appointed a federal administrative law judge, a position she held until 2020. Mary Beth is a director, secretary, and founding investor for She Recovers Foundation and a director for LifeRing Secular Recovery. She is a passionate advocate for multiple paths to recovery and frequently speaks to groups such as Women for Sobriety. This week the girls are joined in a spirited discussion with Allisons childhood friend, Katie Kinder! Katie is a married mother of two, who faced a very scary pregnancy; hemorrhaging and fearing losing the baby right in the beginning of her second trimester, that sent her into a deep depression. Even though she was raised in a very health-conscious household, she really dove into that after this incident. She was prescribed an antidepressant that she wasn't comfortable with, so she set out on another path, which sparked lots of changes in her household products, food that she fed her family, and even the way she approached western medicine. Katie is valid in her feelings - and choices - and she has every right to decide these things for herself and her family. As Moms, we are all valid in our feelings and choices and we know what we need in our life. We are huge advocates for making choices for yourself. We are huge supporters of mom utilizing ANY MEANS of helping themselves to be happy. Medication. Herbs. Workouts. Naps. ANYTHING YOU NEED. After a one hour long discussion with Derek Minor about his The Trap album, we took another hour to dive into some heavy questions. The Trap and the conversation about it, unveiled the hardships of a disenfranchised African American community as they struggle to Fly High Above The Trap by Any Means. Coming into this interview, I found another opportunity. Let's have an honest and nuanced conversation about race. Yes, not an original idea, but let's do something a little different. Let's pretend for a moment, that YOU, not a person of color, had the opportunity to sit down with a black person and ask them anything without recourse. What would you ask? It is in this vein that Derek Minor and I spoke about racial stereotypes, misconceptions, and solutions to help people understand each other better. Instead of shouting and arguing, this is a teachable moment, that takes many of the “rebuttals” toward the African American community, and gives a more thoughtful answer. It is also important to note, and he acknowledges it, Derek Minor, does not speak for all black people. He is aware that some people may agree with the rebuttals and that others may even fall in the middle. This is his take and interpretation toward the questions being asked. In 1978 two families hatched a daring plan to escape East Germany: They would build a hot-air balloon and sail it by night across the border. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow their struggles to evade the authorities and realize their dream of a new life in the West. We'll also shuffle some vehicles and puzzle over a perplexing worker. Intro: In 1993 Tom Peyer and Hart Seely found that Yankees announcer Phil Rizzuto's utterances can be cast as free verse.
