In this episode Lisa and Deborah discuss:How to guide your teen through college and career discernment. The crucial role self-awareness through ongoing reflection and family conversations.Types of real-world experiences that allow teens to explore interests and develop skills. Supporting, not leading, your teen through their journey of building professional connections and independence. Key Takeaways: No matter how many resources your student's school has, work still needs to be done at the family level, especially around self-awareness. “Knowing thyself” is the purpose of education. It is about more than just a final destination; it is rather the accumulation of wisdom, truth, and beauty. Integrate deeper questions into the regular rhythms of life.Invite your teen to have curiosity conversations with those in the fields they are interested in. This will help them develop their imagination and identify potential avenues for internships and other networking opportunities. Encourage your teen to explore opportunities they are interested in. They might like it, they might not, and that's fine! Self-awareness is not a linear discovery process. Teach your teen to see the throughline of what they enjoy and who they are. No matter how many occupations they may have, who they are and how they show up does not change. “Helping students understand that part of this discernment process and knowing who they are is not done in isolation. They need to look to the wise elders around them that can speak truth and can give them some perspective.” – Deborah AllenAbout Deborah Allen: Deborah Allen has been in education as both parent and professional for over 25 years. We've all learned how to ask questions and why it is important. But what about answering questions? Have you been taught how to answer questions and why it is important? Our guest today is Dr. Brian Glibkowski, who shares with us his research and framework for how to develop and present answers. It is what he calls Answer Intelligence. His journey started with his research on questions. He authored an article on questions that has been recognized by the Association of Human Resource Development as one of ten articles that will shape the 21st century. During his research on questions, one simple observation stopped him in his tracks. We know a lot about questions. We know very little about answers. In grade school we teach children about questions, not answers. Our children learn about the six wh-questions (why, what when, where, who, how) and they learn about open and closed questions. There is no typology of answers we teach our children. Journalists, physicians, sales reps, executive coaches, and almost all professionals have been trained in questions, not answers. Business books with question in the title outnumber books with answer in the title 3 to 1. His new book is Answer Intelligence: Raise Your AQ. The book introduces a new science of answers that is nominated for a 2022 Prose award for professional and scholarly excellence. The book rights have been purchased for translation into multiple languages. The AQ framework has been adopted by universities, including the Imperial College of London Business School (global top 20). Certified AQ Partners from the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, India, and elsewhere use AQ with forward thinking organizations around the world.ABOUT BIG SKY FRANCHISE TEAM:This episode is powered by Big Sky Franchise Team. Liz has conducted significant research in the field of leadership and collective intelligence and writes for Harvard Business Review, Fortune, and a variety of other business and leadership journals. A former executive at Oracle Corporation, over the course of 17 years, Liz was the Vice President of Oracle University and a global leader in Human Resource Development. Her management research and executive development firm The Wiseman Group is focused on developing leaders around the globe who can take on the world's toughest challenges. Her client list includes Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. As you will see in this show, I met Liz when she spoke at Tesla and it resulted in one of the most memorable and emotional professional experiences in my life. On the show, we dive into the concepts of Multipliers and Rookie Smarts and she tells personal insight stories that have helped make her the person she is today. She explains the interesting reason why she decided to leave Oracle, and how that planted the seed for one of her books. We discuss her insights as a mother of 4 and a busy professional, and how her world was changed when she realized the management skill she used at work is the exact same skillset she used at home. She also shares how and why she created labels in her books to help provide a framework and language to discuss what she calls the “undiscussable” - A multiplier is a genius maker and helps to activate everyone around them to be their best by spending their energy on extracting and extending the genius of others. A diminisher does the exact opposite, by restricting others and holding them back from showing their what she calls “native genius”. We will discuss this in detail, including giving an example of the “accidental diminisher” - someone who has positive intentions but inadvertently diminishes those around them. She also gives some sage advice for parents on how to balance life and family. I'm beyond thrilled to release today's show and can thank Liz enough for being my guest so please enjoy this episode of Insight Out! Burnout doesn't happen because of too much work. Liz Wiseman, an executive advisor, suggests it's something else entirely. We normally associate burnout with being overworked, but that's not actually the cause of it. Studies show that when you're working on something you feel passionate about — when you feel impact — you're often able to go on much longer and be more productive than when you're simply going with the motions. Executive advisor Liz Wiseman shares the difference between the kinds of people who burnout easily and those who self-generate a dynamic environment for themselves in the workplace. Often people get overwhelmed by creating towering or unrealistic goals, and then don't follow-through with their resolutions. Sometimes we think so far ahead, and want to get to the end so quickly, we often miss the important steps of identifying and planning what's needed to achieve that ultimate goal. Have you ever wanted to ask for a raise, find out why something happened, or frame a question to encourage collaboration? We've all heard there is a "right way to ask a question." Chances are, if you were faced with any of these three questions, you've struggled to get the answers you want or need. Brian Gibkowski, our guest today, has a new book called Answer Intelligence: Raise Your AQ (IQ). The most interesting thing I learned was how often we ask lazy questions that aren't aimed at getting the right answer. His work helps you develop the skills to get the answers you need to make the best decisions. We talk about: How to answer questions during a job interview. How to ask questions and increase the chances of getting the "true" facts rather than the safe answers. Using story, procedure, and action to improve communication and reduce rework. How to provide discipline and intentionality in your meeting so you get the best answers. Brian Glibkowski, Ph.D. Dr. Brian Glibkowski is an author, researcher, and futurist passionate about the role of questions and answers in business and society. His journey started with his research on questions. He authored an article on questions recognized by the Association of Human Resource Development as one of ten articles that will shape the 21st century. Certified AQ Partners from the USA, UK, and UAE. The idea for this podcast came out of one of the discussions from my Moms Moving Forward group. We were talking about how being a mom forces us to grow and become more aware of our unconscious patterns. A couple of moms in the group shared how the Enneagram helped them understand their personality type. This helped them see their unique strengths but also it enabled them to see their blindspots which had negatively impacted their mothering. Becoming aware of these blindspots or unconscious patterns allowed them to change the pattern and have a much more rewarding relationship with their son or daughter. I wanted to bring in a guest who is an expert on the Enneagram to explain what it is and how it can be useful to you. Enneagram is not a religion; it's a tool to help you understand your personality type. Blaine Bartlett joins the show to discuss a sweeping array of topics on everything from self awareness, business ethics, and aspects of globalization and shifting market forces. Blaine is President and CEO of Avatar Resources Inc, a consulting firm he founded in 1987. He has served clients in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the United States. While living in Japan in the early 1980's, he managed the business and international consulting division of one of the largest and most successful Human Resource Development and Consulting organizations in Asia. Blaine is also Founder of the Institute for Compassionate Capitalism, a Managing Director of the Global Coaching Alliance, an Adjunct Professor at China's Beijing University, Dean of Education at the World Business Academy, and a member of the teaching faculty at the American Association for Physician Leadership. In this hour, Blaine helps listeners make the important distinctions between market models and sociopolitical models while breaking down the principles of what he calls Compassionate Capitalism. Blaine illustrates why he believes that the single most important purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of their employees to thrive. He shares why the practice of valuing the soul of your business, while never forsaking your core values and relationships, is a trait of so many successful ventures. In addition to discussing relationship building and leadership, Blaine and John reflect upon shared business experiences and why the tunnel vision of shareholder supremacy can be an achilles heel for leaders. Blaine is fond of saying “the primary focus of what I do is built upon a foundation that focuses on returning to or regaining the soul of your business – that esprit that gives what you do meaning and vitality and connects to everything your business touches.” This focus on your business's unique aspects along with the curation of relationships and focusing on internal relationships while avoiding the dangers of singular growth is an organizing principle in this conversation. Implementing this mindset shift from being a center of accumulation to a center of distribution lies at the core of Blaines' work and mission and John is excited to unpack that message in this episode.
