Netflix's new documentary Ancient Apocalypse was on top of the charts for quite some time. The show is hosted by Graham Hancock, a writer who has written several books regarding his theory of a lost stone age civilization. The series is based on Hancock's books "Magicians of the Gods" and "America before."But how well do Hancock's claims hold up when examined? In this episode, Fredrik, with his background in archaeology, looks into the origins of the theories of Hancock. We will learn more about what he is about and where these ideas originated. This journey will be through esoterism, Blavatskian Theosophy, philosophy, and archaeological methods. We're also joined by Dr. Jeb Card and Brian Dunning, who shares their knowledge about these ideas. Dr. Card is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Miami University and a pre-Hispanic Maya political history specialist. He has also been dealing with pseudoscience for a long time. Dr. Card has written Spooky Archaeology and co-edited Lost city, found pyramid. He is also the co-host of the podcast "In research of" and, previously, co-host of Archaeological Fantasies.Brian Dunning is the host of the award-winning show Skeptoid, that's been going on for 16 years. He has also produced several documentaries, but recently "Science friction." It's a documentary about how filmmakers edit scientists out of context, something people have witnessed happening in Ancient Apocalypse. Brian also has a new documentary that will soon be released called "The UFO Movie THEY Don't Want You to See".In this episode:Intro and setting of the stageJeb Card Interview (4:30)Atlantis (23:40)Hyperdiffusion (35:02)Atlantis: Rebirth (39:40)Ignatius Donnelly (42:28)Esoterism (50:32)Helena Blavatsky and Theosophy (51:13)Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophy (54:18)Edgar Cayce (55:18)Brian Dunning Interview (59:36)Social Media:Facebook: facebook.com/Digging-up-Ancient-Aliens-108173641647111/Twitter: twitter.com/DUAncientAliensInstagram: instagram.com/digging_up_ancient_aliens/TikTok: tiktok.com/@digging_up_ancient_alienContact:https://diggingupancientaliens.com/contactThe intro music is Lily of the woods by Sandra Marteleur, and the outro is named “Folie hatt” by...

Following on from our foray into roleplaying games with bonus content adventures for the folk horror games of Solemn Vale and Shivering Circle, we explore the subject in more detail. How is folklore represented in the tabletop gaming environment? Is it all monsters and creatures, or are there other approaches which look more into our social history? What makes for a strong narrative dynamic and do these techniques draw on the oral storytelling which transmitted folklore in the first place? In an interview recorded for the 2020 Archaeogaming Convention hosted by the Archaeological Fantasies podcast, we are joined by game developer Matthew Dawkins and GM storyteller Tom Murr to examine this area. April 7, 2019 This week we are joined by Dr. Jeb Card. Dr. Jeb Card is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Anthropology at Miami University. He is the editor of The Archaeology of Hybrid Material Culture and the coeditor of Lost City, Found Pyramid: Understanding Alternative Archaeologies and Pseudoscientific Practices. He has been a co-host for the popular podcast Archaeological Fantasies and a repeat guest on the podcast Monster Talk. Jeb is joining us here today to discuss his latest book “Spooky Archaeology, Myth and Science of the Past" Outside of scientific journals, archaeologists are depicted as searching for lost cities and mystical artifacts in news reports, television, video games, and movies like Indiana Jones or The Mummy. This fantastical image has little to do with day-to-day science, yet it is deeply connected to why people are fascinated by the ancient past. By exploring the development of archaeology, this book helps us understand what archaeology is and why it matters. In Spooky Archaeology author Jeb J. Card follows a trail of clues left by adventurers and professional archaeologists that guides the reader through haunted museums, mysterious hieroglyphic inscriptions, fragments of a lost continent that never existed, and deep into an investigation of magic and murder. Card unveils how and why archaeology continues to mystify and why there is an ongoing fascination with exotic artifacts and eerie practices.   2018 has been a bit of a roller coaster for the Archaeological Fantasies blog and podcast. I know many of you have noticed, so I figured, Let's have a rundown of what's happening here at the AF Studios... Last year I went back to finish my Masters' degree and well, between that and working full time, it's been...fun? Unfortunately, the blog suffered and will need to be scaled back some, but I still need to make monthly markers, so stick with me. We'll have a good time still. I moved in February, and though I'm in a much nicer place, moving across three states takes a bit of doing, and I'm still not done doing yet since I've been gone almost three weeks each month since I moved. Still, it's all been good, just busy. Oh, I got the flu. That was almost three weeks of my life. Get your shots folks. Just trust me on that. The most important bit here, that I'm sure you're all reading for, is.....The podcast is moving!!! Yes, we're moving the URL of the podcast, which means we will not be on the Archaeology Podcast Network anymore. The podcast will be hosted here instead, on the Archaeological Fantasies blog. I feel like this makes more sense in the long run, but in the short term, it means we have a little bit of restructuring to do. The podcast is going to be on hiatus until July 1st, at which point we'll relaunch with our new location here on the blog. You'll (hopefully) still be able to subscribe to us with Itunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and with luck Spotify. You can also listen here directly or subscribe to our RSS feed at https://archyfantasies.com/feed/podcast/  or see the full listing at our Blubrry site: The Archaeological Fantasies Podcast.  (Shout out to Mike Dell at BluBrry, you rock) As always this is a labor of love, but it still costs me out of pocket, and hey, I'm happy to pay. Still, if you feel like donating some, it will help pay for the new hosting costs and the blog upkeep. You can support us monthly on Patreon:  https://www.patreon.com/Archyfantasies or throw us a few bucks when you want on Ko-Fi : https://ko-fi.com/A8833HAS . Either option helps us out. Thanks for waiting out our dust, and I hope you can help spread the word! As always follow us on Twitter @ArchyFantasies and contact us if you have questions. Hopefully, this will go smoothly, fingers crossed. Podcast Music by the esteemed Mr. Soup at ArchaeoS0up Productions. I cannot tell you how much I love this song, thank you for letting us use it.

Garrett G. Fagan is Associate Professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Penn State University. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and McMaster University Canada. His main research interests lie in the field of Roman History, about which he’s published numerous scholarly articles. He has lectured widely on topics in Roman history, and this year coedited From Augustus to Nero: An Intermediate Latin Reader. His newest book is Archaeological Fantasies: How Pseudoarchaeology Misrepresents the Past and Misleads the Public. In this interview with D.J. Grothe, Fagan explains the differences between archaeology and pseudoarchaeology, emphasizing how the science of archaeology benefits society. He explores possible motivations of pseudoarchaeologists, and challenges various pseudoarchaeological theories, such as Atlantis, the origins of the Great Pyramids in Egypt, and the theories purporting to discover great pyramids in Bosnia. He also details the various ways that pseudoarchaeology and other pseudoscientific thinking may harm society.
