March is 'New Chronology' month! We'll not only be looking at Anatoly Fomenko's idea about how history is far too long, but we'll also dip into some other alternative histories too. Today we try to wrap our heads around Fomenko's hardly groundbreaking idea that history is wrong, and try to understand the general points of it. Spoilers, it's basically all made up. ____ Show Notes: (Why do I use Wikipedia in my show notes? Usually because it's not a bad place to start researching things, especially pseudo-theories. Once again we welcome Sara Head from ArchyFantasies on to talk about the strange television show The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch. Is it good? [some explicit language in this episode] Jeb and Blake look at the very strange coverage of Mayan Mysteries on In Search Of season 2. (Watch this ISO episode on YouTube) The term Blake was trying to remember at the beginning of the creation story was "ethnogenesis." This is a relatively new word, coming from the mid-20th century. We mention Star Wars and Tikal. The story from David Anderson is in this ArchyFantasies episode, about 5 mins in. The De Landa Letras - how we came to understand the Mayan alphabet http://www.famsi.org/ https://www.mexicolore.co.uk/maya/ Mural detail from the episode: The poet (and frequent speaker in this episode) Alurista. (Wikipedia) Some discussion in the episode is about the wheeled caiman or crocodile toy in the museum. This is a detailed screen-cap of that. We briefly discuss the United Fruit Company. The role of fruit companies in manipulating politics and behaving badly is long, depressing, and too much to fit into this episode. But it is worth reading about. Reenacment of an Auto-da-fe: We talk a bit about cacao and chocolate. I got curious and asked Jeb if he could help me find some somewhat authentic recipes for those audience members who want to try something close to the original drink. First (because, duh!) some background reading on the history of cacao in Mayan culture. And some thoughts about spicy, bitter takes on the drink. The latter link includes a lengthy video on the history of chocolate by Michael Coe (who we mention in the episode). Here are two recipes that Jeb described as "pretty ok": First, the "if you go to all this trouble I hope it doesn't suck" version: https://www.instructables.com/id/Mayan-Chocolate-Drink/ Second, the "you can totally knock this one out at a regular grocery store" version: https://www.newmexico.org/nmmagazine/articles/post/mesoamerican-chocolate-elixir/ Good luck! If you try these let us know how it turns out. Nimoy Fashion! Fashion Forensics! I think we've got a repeat use of the same denim shirt from the killer bees episode. Below are some comparison shots. Let me know if you agree or disagree. I believe in the bee episode Nimoy's unbuttoned collar is hiding the thick black buttons we see in the Mayan museum. And yes, I did make a joke about "author" Jackson Curtis, as depicted in the disaster film 2012. It is a very, very, very, very silly movie but I love watching it with my kids. So - no apologies. -B Extremely cool video example of what LIDAR can do to reveal lost jungle ruins. (NatGeo) Accompanying story about the LiDAR project. Snake Kings of the Maya (PayWall)

2018 has been a bit of a roller coaster for the Archaeological Fantasies blog and podcast. I know many of you have noticed, so I figured, Let's have a rundown of what's happening here at the AF Studios... Last year I went back to finish my Masters' degree and well, between that and working full time, it's been...fun? Unfortunately, the blog suffered and will need to be scaled back some, but I still need to make monthly markers, so stick with me. We'll have a good time still. I moved in February, and though I'm in a much nicer place, moving across three states takes a bit of doing, and I'm still not done doing yet since I've been gone almost three weeks each month since I moved. Still, it's all been good, just busy. Oh, I got the flu. That was almost three weeks of my life. Get your shots folks. Just trust me on that. The most important bit here, that I'm sure you're all reading for, is.....The podcast is moving!!! Yes, we're moving the URL of the podcast, which means we will not be on the Archaeology Podcast Network anymore. The podcast will be hosted here instead, on the Archaeological Fantasies blog. I feel like this makes more sense in the long run, but in the short term, it means we have a little bit of restructuring to do. The podcast is going to be on hiatus until July 1st, at which point we'll relaunch with our new location here on the blog. You'll (hopefully) still be able to subscribe to us with Itunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and with luck Spotify. You can also listen here directly or subscribe to our RSS feed at https://archyfantasies.com/feed/podcast/ or see the full listing at our Blubrry site: The Archaeological Fantasies Podcast. (Shout out to Mike Dell at BluBrry, you rock) As always this is a labor of love, but it still costs me out of pocket, and hey, I'm happy to pay. Still, if you feel like donating some, it will help pay for the new hosting costs and the blog upkeep. You can support us monthly on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Archyfantasies or throw us a few bucks when you want on Ko-Fi : https://ko-fi.com/A8833HAS . Either option helps us out. Thanks for waiting out our dust, and I hope you can help spread the word! As always follow us on Twitter @ArchyFantasies and contact us if you have questions. Hopefully, this will go smoothly, fingers crossed. Podcast Music by the esteemed Mr. Soup at ArchaeoS0up Productions. I cannot tell you how much I love this song, thank you for letting us use it.
