Netflix's new documentary Ancient Apocalypse was on top of the charts for quite some time. The show is hosted by Graham Hancock, a writer who has written several books regarding his theory of a lost stone age civilization. The series is based on Hancock's books "Magicians of the Gods" and "America before."But how well do Hancock's claims hold up when examined? In this episode, Fredrik, with his background in archaeology, looks into the origins of the theories of Hancock. We will learn more about what he is about and where these ideas originated. This journey will be through esoterism, Blavatskian Theosophy, philosophy, and archaeological methods. We're also joined by Dr. Jeb Card and Brian Dunning, who shares their knowledge about these ideas. Dr. Card is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Miami University and a pre-Hispanic Maya political history specialist. He has also been dealing with pseudoscience for a long time. Dr. Card has written Spooky Archaeology and co-edited Lost city, found pyramid. He is also the co-host of the podcast "In research of" and, previously, co-host of Archaeological Fantasies.Brian Dunning is the host of the award-winning show Skeptoid, that's been going on for 16 years. He has also produced several documentaries, but recently "Science friction." It's a documentary about how filmmakers edit scientists out of context, something people have witnessed happening in Ancient Apocalypse. Brian also has a new documentary that will soon be released called "The UFO Movie THEY Don't Want You to See".In this episode:Intro and setting of the stageJeb Card Interview (4:30)Atlantis (23:40)Hyperdiffusion (35:02)Atlantis: Rebirth (39:40)Ignatius Donnelly (42:28)Esoterism (50:32)Helena Blavatsky and Theosophy (51:13)Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophy (54:18)Edgar Cayce (55:18)Brian Dunning Interview (59:36)Social Media:Facebook: facebook.com/Digging-up-Ancient-Aliens-108173641647111/Twitter: twitter.com/DUAncientAliensInstagram: instagram.com/digging_up_ancient_aliens/TikTok: tiktok.com/@digging_up_ancient_alienContact:https://diggingupancientaliens.com/contactThe intro music is Lily of the woods by Sandra Marteleur, and the outro is named “Folie hatt” by...

Important players include (returning podcast fave) Margaret Murray, Egyptologist and writer of 'The Witch Cult In Western Europe' and Robert Fabian, Detective Superintendent of the London Met and early true crime tv celebrity. Both took the murder as a clue that something sinister, long-lived, and magical was brewing in the rural English countryside. And of course we can't get to them without covering Flinders Petrie, James Frazer, The Golden Bough, Dennis Wheatley, and Victorian ideas about witchcraft, archaeology, and the supernatural. Mothman has been done. A lot. So here at the cabin in the woods, we said we wouldn't cover this weirdest of all cryptid creatures unless we had a personal take on it. So in this episode, we investigate extra elements associated with the Mothman mythos. In 1966 and 1967, the West Virginia town of Point Pleasant endured a 13-month period of seeming invasion by MIBs, UFOs, and a winged bird-like creature known as the Mothman. Writer John Keel immortalised this period in his 1975 book the Mothman Prophecies. That much is known by most fans of the strange. So here we investigate: -witness Linda Scarberry's love for a visiting Swedish UFO researcher -an earlier British Mothman story from 1963 -how genuine was Keel about all this anyway? -who were the Ultraterrestrials? -the 2017 Chicago Mothman flap -original newspaper reports of the Scarberry sighting -the lasting legacy of the Prophecies within paranormal culture NOTES: The Saucer Life Podcast https://saucerlife.com/ American Lore Theatre Charlotte Ahlin Interview https://www.americanloretheater.com/post/design-a-stunning-blog AP Magazine Interview With Hakan Blomqvist http://www.apmagazine.info/index.php?id=852&option=com_content&view=article Loren Coleman's Article on Cryptozoonews http://www.cryptozoonews.com/mothman18/ The Mothman Prophecies by John A Keel https://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/cienciareal/mothman_prophecies/mothman.htm In Research Of Podcast (Blake Smith & Jeb Card) https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/in-research-of-william-blake-smith-q8IyYbhNXOj/ Flying Saucer Review March-April 1964 (Saltwood Mystery Article) http://www.noufors.com/Documents/Books,%20Manuals%20and%20Published%20Papers/Specialty%20UFO%20Publications/Flying%20Saucer%20Review/FSR,1964,Mar-Apr,V%2010,N%202.pdf Allison Jornlin at the Hythe Kent Mothman Sighting Location https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_llCmVF6ipM&t=221s Article from Point Pleasant Register, Nov 16th 1966. Watch this episode of In Search Of... on YouTube. Nimoy Fashion - once again speaking to us from a Los Angeles rooftop. Around the 9 min mark, we mistakenly say the Bay of Fundy is in Newfoundland. Nope - it's between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. (Does everything in Canada have to have "new" in its name??) Thanks to Stephanie J. Jeb Card and Blake Smith discuss the In Search Of episode: KILLER BEES.  Will aggressive Africanized honey bees destroy the world? Is every problem a metaphor for colonialism? Tune in and find out! Watch episode on YouTube   I've attached some relevant articles from the time, one on bees and one on ISO. Also, I've set the episode to "Explicit" because of all the sexy, sexy bee talk. Radioactive Wasps (Correction: Location was at HANFORD not HANSON site - corrected here, but I'm not cutting out my joke about Hanson. -B) Jeb mentioned Japanese Giant Wasps - those are described here. (They're wasps, only giant - and from Japan. That's good marketing in the name.) Jeb was right to bring this beastie up in conjunction with bees.  From the Wikipedia article: In Japan, beekeepers often prefer European honey bees because they are more productive than the endemic Japanese honey bees.[citation needed] However, it can be difficult to maintain a captive hive of European honey bees, as the giant hornets are devastating to the bee hives.[citation needed] Once a Japanese giant hornet has located a hive of European honey bees, it leaves pheromone markers around it that quickly attract nest-mates to converge on the hive. An individual hornet can kill forty European honey bees per minute, while a group of 30 hornets can destroy an entire hive containing 30,000 bees in less than four hours.[4] The hornets kill and dismember the bees, returning to their nest with the bee thoraxes, which they feed to their larvae, leaving heads and limbs behind. The honey and bee larvae are also taken to feed the hornet larvae. Another correction - I think I called them "hornet killers" or something similarly stupid, but I was talking about the very large American "Cicada Killer" wasps.  But that's not what Jeb was talking about (see above).  The Cicada Killer is big enough to - you guessed it - kill a cicada.  They're not as insanely beefy as the Japanese hornets, but they're big beefy units. Frequently on-screen expert Dr. Norman Gary is a Bee Wrangler for Hollywood, working on Candyman, X-Files, etc. Dr. Gary playing clarinet covered in bees.

He has been a co-host for the popular podcast Archaeological Fantasies and a repeat guest on the podcast Monster Talk. Jeb is joining us here today to discuss his latest book “Spooky Archaeology, Myth and Science of the Past" Outside of scientific journals, archaeologists are depicted as searching for lost cities and mystical artifacts in news reports, television, video games, and movies like Indiana Jones or The Mummy. This fantastical image has little to do with day-to-day science, yet it is deeply connected to why people are fascinated by the ancient past. By exploring the development of archaeology, this book helps us understand what archaeology is and why it matters. In Spooky Archaeology author Jeb J. Card follows a trail of clues left by adventurers and professional archaeologists that guides the reader through haunted museums, mysterious hieroglyphic inscriptions, fragments of a lost continent that never existed, and deep into an investigation of magic and murder. Card unveils how and why archaeology continues to mystify and why there is an ongoing fascination with exotic artifacts and eerie practices. The History of Pseudoarchaeology: The Moundbuilders Myth

Archaeological Fantasies Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 5, 2018 11:18

The first thing to look at any time you start a new project is the history of the topic. Our topic is practically as old as the field of archaeology itself, some might argue even older (Card 2018). The reason for this is that before the field of archaeology ‘professionalized’ there was a time of Antiquarians. This Time of Antiquarianism is very much like what Jeb Card (2018) calls mythic science time, a time before names and before organization. It’s not as mystical as it all sounds, but that area of fuzzy memory where the mists of time are a little harder to see though, that’s where trouble starts. We don’t need to walk through the history of the field of archaeology or drown ourselves in theory (thank god). A few highlighted moments will do us nicely. What we want to understand is that the way archaeologists interact with pseudoarchaeology and the public today is very different from the way early antiquarians and archaeologists did. The field itself used to be much more open and communicated with the public better. True, the field was far less professional and had issues that the modern professional field is still learning to detach from. I don’t want people to think I’m trying to ignore this, archaeology has issues, but it’s the worst of these issues that pseudoarchaeology tries so damn hard to hold onto. Slight disclaimer here, we’ll be focusing mostly on North American archaeology and pseudoarchaeology. We may make a jump outside of these borders occasionally, but mostly we’ll stay here. The main reason for this is most of today's’ popular pseudoarchaeology seems to come back to the Americas at some point, and secondly, it’s the area of archaeology that I am most familiar with and speak to with the most authority. So with that, let’s look at the what I consider the first real clash of archaeology vs pseudoarchaeology. Archaeology vs Pseudoarchaeology, Begin! When settlers and explorers first came to the Americas, they noticed the monumental structures that dotted the continent (Kolodny 2012). However, Europeans at the time couldn’t understand how people as ‘primitive’ as the Natives could have created anything as impressive as the great earth mounds in North America, or the stunning temples of South American. And so, lacking either the knowledge or the belief in the humanity of Native Americans, the Europeans decided that there must have been another race of people here before the Natives. One that was advanced and clever, and probably white like themselves. Having no evidence of any kind to point to who these advanced peoples were, early antiquarians fell back on myths, folklore, bible stories, and mythic documents like the Icelandic Saga’s to help them figure out who it was that settled the Americas first (Feder 1990, Kolodny 2012). The most popular candidates for First were the Lost tribes of Israel, the Phoenicians, and the Norse. The Celts and random British figures also factored in, but the top three were (and still are today) the first grouping. There are lots of reasons for these different groups, spanning political, religious, and just plain racist ideals, but the important thing to take away at this point is, none of this was pseudoarchaeology….yet. Even those who are usually put forward as early champions of a Native First theory were not as noble as we’re led to believe. This whitewashing of archaeological history feeds into Jeb Card’s (2018) argument of mythic scientific time. Card defines mythic time in his book Spooky Archaeology (2018) as “the time before names” and “time before human society.” He further applies this idea to mythic science time, a time before professional organization and scientific accountability. A time when the field of archaeology was just starting to develop and solidify into what we like to recognize as professional archeology today. The case of the Moundbuilder myth encapsulates this. Not only as an example of how archaeology was developing at the time,

Things changed drastically as archaeology developed and professionalized. During the pre-professional time, or the Romantic Era of archaeology as Jeb Card and David Anderson (2016) call it, archaeology was really more of a jumbled collection of competing methodologies, antiquarians out looking for epic adventures chasing down mythic locations, and making extraordinary claims to establish racial dominance and promote nationalist agendas (Card and Anderson 2016). However, as the field of archaeology matured, it began to challenge these behaviors, choosing scientific procedures over frivolity, demanding evidence to support wild claims, and in general, growing up. For example, Alternative theorists love to point out a couple early hoaxes that archeology had to deal with. The most famous of these would be the Piltdown man hoax. Ever so briefly, the Piltdown man was an early 1900’s hoax were the lower jaw of an ape was altered to look like it belonged with the cranial part of a human skull. It was ‘discovered’ in 1912 in Sussex England and was lauded as the missing link (Feder 2010, 1990). Though the hoax wasn’t one-hundred percent debunked until 1949, it did have its early detractors (Feder 1990). Many thought it was just a little too convenient that Piltdown man was discovered where it was, and as time went by and more actual hominids were found around the world that predated Piltdown’s supposed age, more suspicions were thrown at it. 1949 was the beginning of the end for Piltdown man as a series of tests revealed that the bones that made up the skull were not the right age or even from the same species (Feder 1990). Piltdown man fits because of the desperate need by the British government to have, not only an early hominid discovered on their soil but to have it be *the* missing link. British archaeologists at the time were willing to overlook clues that this was probably a hoax. Yet 40 years later, after a lot of questions from inside the field, the Piltdown man was exposed. The reason this case is so well known is because it played out in the public eye, mainly by the circumstances of the time. Newspapers carried stories and images of the Piltdown man (Feder 1990). The public loved it and talked about it. It was even presented by the researchers to the public. Because of this, other researchers were able to know of and examine the hoax, and call it into question long enough to finally get it disproven. Now when we talk about the Piltdown man, we’re talking about the hoax and not the supposed missing link. The development of Institutional Professional Archaeology. Honestly, this is where things start to decline as far as the interactions between archaeology and pseudoarchaeology are concerned. Leading up to the 60’ Archaeologists were all over the place publicly. During the 1800’s they were traveling around speaking and presenting findings. Granted this was a necessity of the times, but the side effect was a great deal of public engagement. As time moved on, Archaeologists began to appear on the radio and then TV (Card and Anderson 2016) embracing the new media as ways to communicate with the public. They wrote popular books about archaeology and, again, spoke publicly about the topic. This all seemed to work out best over in the UK. Sir Lenord Woolley was all over the radio, Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Glyn Daniel were named TV personality of the year in 1954, the UK show Animal, Vegetable, Mineral was a success where the US version What in the World was not (Card and Anderson 2016). Overall, it seemed like everything was going good. Then the New Archeology moment began in archaeology, symbolizing a shift in archaeological theory and practice. This time was important, it was a time when archeology began to look critically at itself and evaluate itself. It started important theory groups like gender and queer theory, started a realization of the colonial practices of archeology and called out the racism of the field.

The Importance of Myth and Oral Traditions – Episode 30

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2016

Episode 30 has dropped and it's chocked full of Ken and I ranting about how important Myth, Oral Traditions, and even local lore can be to archaeologists and archaeology as a field.  I know that I harp a lot about the misunderstood and misused records of Native American mythology, but there's a good reason for it. Too often the fringe likes to turn to the myths and oral traditions of a random tribe in order to try and support a story they are trying to sell. The problem they inadvertently run into is taking a myth or oral tradition out of context. Context, as we know, is Queen, much like the GPS is God. When you chose to ignore context, you can make up anything you want and probably find something out there to support it. That doesn't make it true or correct, and the refusal to see that is just insulting at best. I've lost count of how many times I've seen or read some fringe theorists spouting off about how they know more about what a Native tradition "really meant" than the living decedents of that tradition. What's more, is by trying to force traditions that aren't yours to fit your favorite story, you're missing out on actual information that is being conveyed via these rich and varied traditions. So give the episode a listen, or a second listen, and let us know what you think! We're on YouTube again!
