**Warning: sensitive material is discussed in this podcast** Ally Carlton was recently on the podcast after she grabbed the FKT both North and Southbound on the Art Loeb Trail within three weeks of each other. Pretty astounding to say the least. And then, in March, Ally crossed the finish line of the MST 100 as the female winner and third overall, despite the horrible weather conditions. But, this episode contains so much more than a race recap of her grind through this race. This episode is raw and real. Ally mentioned in our first episode together that she experienced trauma as a teenager but did not elaborate. But on this episode she was ready to talk about her experience for the first time in a public setting. Yes, her accomplishments are impressive, but her bravery to share, to hopefully help others, is so much more impressive. I am so proud of you, Ally. Your strength, your bravery, your heart to help others, your honesty and your authenticity is beautiful. You are beautiful. Thank you. Ally wants you to reach out to her if need to talk to someone. You can find her on Strava, and message her through this platform. Click here: Ally's Strava I have no affiliation with this website, but according to RAINN.org, every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. If you need help, they ask that you call 800.656.HOPE (4673). Follow Facing Vert on Instagram, @facingvert. As always, thank you for listening and sharing with others.

Today on the podcast we have one of the most fascinating people I have even spoken with - Canyon Woodward. Canyon is a championship level trail and ultra runner, political campaign manager, and climate activist. Canyon's new short film, RURAL RUNNERS, is an intimate look into what it takes to show up, rain or shine, and how to balance running for yourself and running for your country. The film follows Maine State Senator Chloe Maxmin's House & Senate runs, as well as Canyon's demanding trail running career. It's a unique pairing of affairs - a fun, relevant and inspiring story that humanizes the political process and extends beyond the dark state of party politics. It's also about avoiding burnout - a common occurrence on the campaign trail - by prioritizing self-care, and bringing a bit of joy and purpose to everything we do. Canyon and Chloe also co-authored Dirt Road Revival, a fascinating book that details their work together and a path forward for important political work in rural communities. Here are some of Canyon's amazing recent race and FKT results: 10/01/22 - The Naturalist 30k // 2:15, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 8/26/22 - Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc // 25:08, 48th Overall // Chamonix, France 7/14/22 - S.C.A.R. // 13:33, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Great Smokies National Park, NC 7/01/22 - Art Loeb Trail // 5:38, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Shining Rock Wilderness, NC 5/21/22 - Sun Mountain 50k // 4:04, 1st Overall // Winthrop, WA 8/8/21 - USATF 50K Trail Championship // 5:18, 5th Overall // Danbury, NH 5/14/21 - Cruel Jewel 100 (106mi, 30,000 ft of elevation gain) // 22:36, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Blairsville, GA 3/20/21 - Assault on Blackrock // 1:06:21, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Sylva, NC 1/18/20 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 3:57, 1st Overall // Almond, NC 10/5/19 - The Naturalist 50k // 5:02, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 4/20/19 - Hellbender 100 Miler (24,000+ ft of elevation gain) // 23:22, 3rd Overall // Asheville, NC 1/20/19 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 4:10, 2nd Overall // Almond, NC You can learn more about Canyon at and watch RURAL RUNNERS at www.dirtroadorganizing.org and www.canyonwoodward.com. This week Clint and Dawson talk with Skyler Baker. Skyler was born and raised on Signal Mountain Tennessee and since he was a child he was immersed in the outdoor community and music scene of the Chattanooga area. Every spring and fall his family camped in a pop up trailer in the surrounding state parks. As a teenager that developed into hiking with friends and doing short overnight trips around Walden's Ridge. His senior project included work with the Cumberland Trail Conference before setting off for the college of engineering at UT Knoxville. In his second year at UT he went on a whim of a day hike in the Smokies which sparked a love. In my third year he was invited to spend spring break backpacking on Cumberland Island, his first multiple night trip. While working a summer internship in Chattanooga he began to trail run every day after work. Once he graduated that became his hobby and it further developed in the Smokies. His approach to travel also changed as he took trips to South Africa, the Alps, Canada, and Alaska. After running a few ultra marathons he ticked off new trails in the Smokies one by one, eventually completing all of them in July 2020. Following the Smokies 900 he looked for new goals including the SCAR, R2R2R, the Art Loeb Trail, and he even got into gravel biking. Nothing was filling the void so he set his sights on the Pacific Crest Trail in April 2021. After completing the trail he spent a month seeing the National Parks before returning to Tennessee. Skyler shares his PCT experience with us and a few other stories from his adventures. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm

The Art Loeb Trail is one of the premier backpacking and running trails in Western North Carolina. It begins (or ends) at a Boy Scout Camp near Black Balsam Knob, crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway, traverses a prominent ridge in Pisgah National Forest, and terminates near the small town of Brevard. On Spring Equinox, I set out to run the length of the Art Loeb Trail with no goal other than to finish before dark. The next day, while picking up my car from the trailhead, I crossed paths with a friend who was breaking his own record to establish the fastest known time.    Music on this episode by Seeking Madras, Jason Shaw, Wesley Davis, Figure Ground (I could not find contact info for Figure Ground, but many of us loved their tunes as they appeared in skate and snowboard soundtracks back in the day. Ever since she was a small girl growing up in Ohio, Julie has been intrigued by the Appalachian Trail. She and her Dad would have many conversations and dreams about hiking the AT and without her knowing it, the AT climbed into her heart. Julie ended up in Charlotte, NC, and realized that, as an educator with summers off, she could begin work on pursuing her AT dream. So, in 2006, Jester loaded up her pack, put on her boots, and set off on a 2,189-mile journey. For the next 12 summers, she would venture out to the trail and hike; sometimes for a week, other times for multiple weeks and hundreds of miles. She soon turned into a “serial section hiker.” Along the way she also learned that just about every hiker has an amazing story and now Julie has her own podcast where she shares section hikers stories with other dreamers out there. Jester is currently in the process of completing her second section hike of the Appalachian Trail with about 700 miles left to go. She has also hiked the Art Loeb Trail, the Foothills Trail, The Narrows in Utah, Yosemite’s Half Dome and Cloud’s Rest, and most recently completed Mt. Rainier Wonderland Trail.
