Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, June 13, 2024. West Virginia's excellent business climate continues to attract top-notch, major companies…to thru-hikers, historic Harpers Ferry is the heart of the Appalachian Trail…and the founder of Lafayette Flats shares what inspired her to create this boutique lodging in the New River Gorge…on today's daily304. #1 – From CHIEF EXECUTIVE – West Virginia has turned a new leaf in economic development. After notching nearly $20 billion in capital investment commitments since 2017, the state has shown that CEOs, as well as its residents, understand West Virginia is a great place to live, work and play. Michael Graney, executive director of the West Virginia Department of Economic DevelopmentT, references West Virginia's great business climate. That's due in part to unique education opportunities, ample raw materials and quick access to important markets. The state also has America's second-lowest workers' compensation insurance rates, the least manufacturing workforce turnover in the nation and a highly responsive economic development team that out-quicks the competition. Major companies, including Procter & Gamble, Toyota Motor and MHI RJ Aviation Group, have taken advantage of locating and staying in West Virginia, while new entrants include Nucor. North America's largest steel-products company two years ago selected a site near Apple Grove for its new, $3.1 billion sheet mill which will employ about 800 full-time workers. It takes five to seven months for hikers who want to hike the entirety of the trail from Maine to Georgia as it winds through forests, rural countryside and small towns. Of all the towns on the AT, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia could be considered the heart. It's home to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the organization that is responsible for maintaining the trail. It's also home to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, loads of Civil War history and historic buildings, and beautiful mountain scenery. Hikers may want to rest up for a few days here to explore, grab a tasty meal, or even raft or tube on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Several campgrounds are available outside the park boundaries, providing a comfortable place to rest up for the rest of the journey. F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
One of the most under-appreciated photography locations in the United States is Appalachia, a region that stretches from Alabama in the south to New York in the north. Appalachia is not home to towering mountains, arid deserts, or epic displays of geology; however, a skilled photographer who takes care to connect with this place is able to create fantastic photographs that are personally expressive and evocative. Today's guest on episode 306 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast, Michele Sons, is one such photographer. Her attention to detail and personal connection to Appalachia, fog, and geographic peculiarities has given her photography a voice in the crowded space of nature and landscape photography. Michele has come to specialize in quiet, contemplative images of the Appalachian region and beyond. She has worked with National Geographic for years on their Beautiful Landscapes calendars, and other clients of hers include The Wilderness Society, Great Smoky Mountains Association, Eastern National, Gladstone Media, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. If you want to learn how Michele is able to make stunning images of this seemingly less-than-iconic location, then you have come to the right place. On this week's episode, we discuss: Michele's 111-page e-book, Riversong, all about the New River Gorge in Fayetteville, West Virginia (Use the code FSTOP20 for 20% off). Michele's personal connection to place and how she goes about making images that are connective in this way. Michele's approaches to making images from less than iconic destinations. How photography has served Michele in a healing capacity. How Michele's mental health has shifted since she took up photography full-time. Michele's strategies and challenges for monetization as a full-time photographer. How knowing yourself can lead to better photographs. Michele's "The Feminine Landscape" project. Our mutual obsession with fog. And a lot more! For this episode of The All-Around Adventure Podcast, I'm joined by Rue McKenrick; originator and Executive Director of the American Perimeter Trail. Rue has walked many miles through America's trail systems! He grew up in western Pennsylvania, with the Appalachian Trail running through his backyard. Back in 2003, he walked the entire length Appalachian Trail to complete his first thru-hike. Afterward, he sought out conservation and educational work through several non-profit organizations. Such as the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Outward Bound, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and Ameri-Corp. Over the next several years he would go on to backpack the Triple Crown. Having already completed the Appalachian Trail, the two remaining trails were the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. Not long after completing the Triple Crown, Rue came up with the idea of the American Perimeter Trail and its respective conference. Rue started his scouting trek for the trail in Bend, Oregon back in 2019. And has now completed the 12,000 mile loop around the country! In this episode, Rue shares his experiences from his time doing the Triple Crown and while scouting the American Perimeter Trail. The original southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail was at the summit of Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia. But that changed in 1958 when the Appalachian Trail Conservancy agreed to move the terminus to Springer Mountain because of...(wait for it)...chickens. Really. When Jocelyn Smith was growing up, she told her friends and family she didn't want to go to college. Instead, her goal was to hike all 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail, a rugged journey spanning from northern Georgia to central Maine. Last year, she finally realized that dream in a seven-month long, life-changing adventure. But as soon as she started her descent from the last mountain summit, she started to wonder… what now? What did all of this mean? For the thousands of people who “thru-hike” the world's longest trails, this is actually a well-known phenomenon. They call it “the post-trail blues.'' If getting out into nature is supposed to be restorative, why do so many long-distance hikers report feeling depressed after they finish? In this episode, we explore how an epic hike turns into a new identity, and ask why some of the biggest achievements of our lives can leave us feeling strangely empty. Don't be an asshole. That's the name of the game. Tumbles and Cranky go over some social media faux pas that have come up recently on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Instagram as well as get a hearty hello from some nice folks in Africa. The episode is rounded out with talking about how your hiking/backpacking kit works well preparing for potential real world issues. Enjoy!
Another exciting update from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has crossed our desks and we're here for it. The organization has repeatedly proven that they care about everything but hiking, hikers and their AT achievements. We implore you to explore other hiker loving organizations such as the Appalachian Mountain Club (www.outdoors.org) and the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association (www.aldha.org). My guest today is Max Mishkin. I met Max on our first day of college at the College of William of Mary, almost a decade ago. Together in 2009, we hiked over 300 miles of the Appalachian trail, coursing our way through several southern states including Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Since that time, Max has followed his passion for nature and re-dedicated his life to preserving and protecting the outdoor spaces that he loves. He was worked with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy based in Harper's Ferry WVA and has been a caretaker for the Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail. As part of his work in our natural spaces, Max has documented its beauty through photography and uses it to tell stories of places and the people that love them. On his site: http://www.mishkinphoto.com Max contributes to the ongoing story of conservation. For as he sees it, photography is a means to connect the essential human experience with the imagery of our most cherished natural wonders, all in an effort to better understand our relationship with nature and the stakes of its preservation. Whether he is managing his conservation photography company, working as a park ranger or thruhiking the Appalachian Trail, Max's story is all about following your dreams in the face of conventional wisdom. In our conversation today, Max shares a piece of his life's journey, navigating his way through societal norms to eventually discover that his passion for nature, his spiritual purpose and his practical talents all overlapped as part of his work IN THESE NATURAL SPACES THEMSELVES. Breaking down the walls of work and play, recreation and livelihood, Max offers us a poetic yet realistic portrayal of what can truly happen when you follow your dreams and do what you love. I hope you enjoy this heartwarming conversation from two close friends. For all those who have struggled with attentional deficit or hyperactivity issues, various learning disabilities and otherwise challenging school and working environments, I believe this episode with Max will touch your spirit, giving you more fire to know what is truly possible when you disregard those who say you cannot, and live in the empowered spirit that says of course you can.
