Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Cruel Jewel was not the outcome that I was looking for with regard to finishing. The details are shared in this podcast. The questions came earlier. Am I too old, too slow to run these races? Why am I doing this to myself? At 48 hours post race it sank in. It is more about the start line than the finish line. It is about taking a chance on the unknown. I had the opportunity to confront a struggle that I chose which is different from having a struggle cast upon me. I was able to experience that moment when all that exists is now. I focused on the trail. I watched for snakes, turns, rocks and roots. I climbed for miles and pushed my limits. I practiced going down through roots and rocks. I heard birds, saw beautiful rocks and traversed lush green forests (some secondary to poison oak). I experience the struggles of others and the help and encouragement of strangers and friends. I felt immense peace in the struggles. I am better for having started. My finish line came earlier on Saturday, but I am anxious and grateful for the ability to find another start line and all the unknowns that it will bring. Each time I start, I learn and grow. Rarely is it perfection as defined by the outcome. It is not so different from life. We plan and rehearse, but the reality is that life is often much different. It is not so bad, if we learn to enjoy the journey. Thank you for listening to my journey. I met Bob Watters at the 2nd crew meetup aid station at Cruel Jewel this year and then again saw him at the turnaround point. He was crewing and pacing his son and I was crewing my friend Jamie. I noticed him wearing that awesome Southern States 200 buckle and introduced myself. I wanted to record a recap for the podcast and then fate would have it that my friend Amber peer-pressured me into running it this year. So, selfishly I was looking for tips. Bob is an accomplished ultra-runner having finished Pinhoti 9 times and other challenging races such as Blood Rock 100 and No Business. He was also the state champ in cowboy style shooting a few years ago, hench the nickname "cowboy" which came from me, not him. I think you will enjoy getting to know Bob and the Alabama races a little better and I bet you'll be wanting to check some of them out. Links below. On May 18, we took on the grueling Cruel Jewel 50 miler, which is actually a 57.5 mile trek through the Georgia mountains with 17K feet of climbing! It was beautiful, it was awesome, and it was tough! And as it turned out for both of us, our race ended just past the 50K mark. Check out the full episode to hear how we prepared, what went well, and what ultimately led to the decision to pull the plug. This week on the HappyCast, we venture down to a place in Georgia that not even the devil would go: The Chattahoochee National Forest for the 2024 edition of Cruel Jewel 100. Considered one of the hardest 100 mile foot races in the country, with over 30k feet of climbing and a 48 hour cutoff, and a buckle that is the size of a small child's head, Cruel Jewel attracts some of the bravest (and craziest) runners from around the world. As the organization running the race, DUMASS events, likes to proclaim: poor decisions make for better stories. We are joined by returning guest and fan favorite Regina Massingill as she talks us through her experience running the 100 miler, and why this may have been her toughest race yet. Andrew, who continues to refuse to pace Regina, talks about the overall race experience from a crew perspective as well. We are sure to cover every aspect of this race for this one! So sit back and join us, and as always, our poor decisions will lead to even worse stories. But that's exactly why you listen. Be on the lookout for some Tahoe 200 coverage in the near future as we are now in the middle of 200 miler season!Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. I was fortunate to go to Blue Ridge and Blairsville Georgia this past weekend to toe the line at the Cruel Jewel 50 mile ultra race. The ultra running community are my people. Tenacious, positive, and tremendous athletes all humble at the same time. It did not goes as I would have wished for, but it did go for how I was trained. I got to see where I was at a fitness level and experience some of the most beautiful and peaceful forests. That area crosses the Appalachian trail. People on the trail give other hikers trail names. I had a trail angel this weekend. I gave him the name of Russ Angel because of time he gave to rescue me and others after we pulled the white flag. I hope you enjoy my trail tails. It was a great weekend despite coming up short. Ultra running and life are so much alike. You need a plan and you need to work the plan. When it does not work, you need to adjust the plan. The bottom line is forward progress. Maybe not that day, but the next day it is time to get back on the journey whether it is trail or health. If you would like some help with your health journey, visit our website to fine out how you can join our practice. Thank you to Russ Marlowe and Sandy Geisel for your support. Shout out to Rich and Tony and the swanky red pick-up. Thank you to Sarah Snyder and her staff as the race director. Like Sarah says, poor decisions make for better stories. She is most famous for saying, try not to be an asshole. Words to live by. Coree Woltering is a professional trail runner, known for his ultra running Speedo, his Eco Challenge effort and many other things related to running including putting up the supported fastest known time (FKT) of 21 days, 13 hours, and 35 minutes on Wisconsin's 1,147-mile Ice Age Trail in 2020. We talk about the expectations that others have occasionally put on Coree as an openly gay African American male. On his way to Maine (watch them gators), Coree met up with his friend Bessic (from the podcast) and they went for a run on Sleeping Giant. We also get a vivid insider's view of what it's like to race 800 meters on the track. Then we talk about everything else including the pressure of sponsorship, Western States WSER and the joy of sobriety. We also get a commitment for a revisit after he runs Cruel Jewel with Bessic. One word. Carnage! Our mission is to help runners take their next step along their ultra running journey. With this series of Race Spotlight episodes, we want to introduce you to races that you may or may not have heard of by speaking directly to the Race Directors to give you all the information you need. This week, we take a look at the Cruel Jewel 100. The race takes place in the Chattahoochee National Forest in the North Georgia Mountains. The race is 104 miles, with over 33,000 feet of gain/loss. That is over 300 feet of gain per mile. The race does have a 48 hour cutoff. For perspective, the race has been around for 8 years and has had only 5 finishers run it in a sub 24. The race is tough. But, as ultra runners, we choose tough. Joining us on the show are the co-race directors, Sarah Snyder and Sean Lawford, to help give us the inside scoop about everything the Cruel Jewel 100 has to offer. Enjoy the show? Please leave us rating and comment to share the love! We appreciate you taking the time to join us. This was the 50th Year of the Western States 100 that starts in the Olympic Valley and ends at the Placer High School in Auburn. On the chat, we've got three of the four Floridians who took on the course! This year Tyler Peterson, Joseph Pinter, and Zach Hanna crossed that finish line to get that belt buckle. Tyler Peterson has done 100 Milers like the Long Haul 100 here in Florida, the Yeti 100, Burning River 100, Mohican 100, Kettle Moraine 100, Indiana Trail 100, and the Umstead 100. He finished the Western States 100 this year with a time of 25:24:44. Joseph Pinter has done races like the Cruel Jewel 100, Grindstone 100, Massanutten Mountain 100, and the Pinhoti 100. He also ran at the 2019 Western States 100! In 2019, he ran a time of 29:42:39... this year he ran a time of 29:13:11. Zach Hanna has done races like the Hennepin 100, Pinhoti 100, No Business 100, Rio Del Lago 100, and the Umstead 100. He finished the Western States 100 this year with a time of 28:37:16. For almost five decades, the Western States 100 has been home to some of the sport's most amazing and legendary competitions. It's essentially the Super Bowl of the trail running scene in the United States. With more than 1,500 dedicated volunteers helping to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the race has stirred the spirit of runners from all walks of life and from all over the globe.
Lunar Moth? What!? You will have to listen to my awesome conversation with Miller Groome to see what in the world this is about! Although I have never met Miller in person until our conversation, we both ran in the Cruel Jewel 100 this past May. He is also close friends with many that I run with, so it was so fun getting to know him myself. Miller has been extremely successful in the Ultra world, with many podium spots in the races he has done, including coming in third overall at Cruel Jewel. Miller also recently obtained the FKT on the Linville Gorge Hiking Circuit-a 34 mile grueling run that circles the Linville Gorge Wilderness in its' entirety. Yes, he is a competitor, but he simply runs for the enjoyment. Being outdoors is where he finds his peace and joy. As an ER nurse at Mission Hospital, I can't imagine the chaos he sees on a daily basis, but he has the most laid-back personality, and I love his zest for life. Thank you, Miller, for spending time chatting with me. I look forward to seeing you out on the trails! This episode is SO important to me because it highlights the people that helped me accomplish my goals at the Cruel Jewel 100…my pacers! Without Lara, Evan, Lisa and Tom, who knows if I would have even crossed the finish. But fortunately, I don't have to know that feeling because they were there for me. I don't even know if they realize how they important they are to me, and how grateful I am for each one of them. You will hear about their experience pacing me and what they learned during the process. Enjoy! My Cruel Jewel YouTube video is out! Hear my journey taking on the beastly Cruel Jewel 100 mile trail race in the mountains of North Georgia. It may be called a 100 mile race, but in reality it is somewhere between 103-106 miles with around 30,000 feet of elevation gain, and I felt every bit! After hitting a mental and physical low early in the race, I thought I was never going to finish, but with so many prayers I was able to pull through and finish stronger than I ever imagined I could. 2nd place female and 13th overall still seems absolutely unreal to me, and I could never have accomplished this epic feat without the help of my crew, Jonathan and Kayda Jordan, and my pacers...Lara and Evan Dykes, Lisa Busche (& the whole Busche family), and Tom Sharkey. You kept me going, you kept my mind sharp, and you kept me laughing...THANK YOU will never be enough. My very special guests, Jonathan (husband) and Kayda (my youngest), will also share their experience crewing through 30 hours in unfamiliar woods. I hope you get a glimpse of what it might be like to be a part of something so completely cruel, yet so incredibly rewarding. God has created us to do so much more than we could ever think or imagine. This is one I will never forget.
James Boler is a lifelong Memphis resident who has had a lifelong love of being active. He says he's always been an athlete mainly in the baseball world. He played competitive softball from age 22-38. After that, he started running, at age 40 .He made a bet with his wife that he could run a half marathon without training. He ran the race and regretted not training as had to walk pretty much the entire race. Once he ran the half he decided to run a marathon the next year but would actually train for it. Since then, he's finished three hundred milers and tried a 200, but dropped at (only) 140 miles. He will return to Cruel Jewel on May 19 and plans to conquer the Cowboy 200 in September, after last year's DNF. He is going to be a first-time race director in November when he is in charge of the Mamba 100. There are shorter distances, too. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thestubborntortoise/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thestubborntortoise/support

We are diving right into the Green Swamp of Florida with the 2023 Skunk Ape's Revenge! On this episode, we are chatting with some of those 60k runners! At this years race, nearly half the 60k field dropped down to the 30k distance... so these 60k runners are some real warriors! On the chat we've got your overall champion, Kalo Axsom! He took the win out there with a new course record in a time of 5:09:31! He also recently won the Long Haul 100 and the Sandridge 7 Hour! He's run races like the Skunk Ape Night Run, Forgotten Florida, the Keys 100, and the Skydive 100! Also on the chat is Shala Reifinger! She traveled down to the race from Georgia! It was awesome to have her out at the race and to have her family supporting and even running out there! Her brother also ran his first ultra at this year's Skunk Ape's Revenge! She's done races like the H9, Cruel Jewel 50, Mystery Mountain, Huff-n-Puff, the FATS 50k, and the Mountain Mist! Then we've got Ryan Jacobson! He's one of those Skunk Ape Runners who was at the inaugural year for the Revenge race! He's a guy I swear I see at nearly every single race. He's done races like the Long Play, the Long Haul 100, Colt 45, Croom Zoom, John Holmes, and he's done the Ice Age Trail! Then we've got Aaron Ware and his first ultra-marathon! But not only to that, it was really first ever organized trail race. He got it done with a time of 9:07:31! He absolutely crushed it!!! Your top four women for this year's Skunk Ape's Revenge 60k! 1. Amanda Richmond - 6:07:08 2. Sage Lyons - 6:14:34 3. Daylee Sheppard - 6:24:06 4. Cheryl Shelhart - 6:45:02 Your top four men for this years Skunk Ape's Revenge 60k! 1. Kalo Axsom - 5:09:31 2. Steven Anderson - 5:27:52 3. Matt Krauss - 6:15:24 4. John Benham - 6:44:13
The Forgotten Florida 100 Miler was back for another year! On the chat, we have your back-to-back champion, Max Bennett! He took the win this year with a time of 18:18:47! At last year's race, it was a three-way tie with Max, Aden St Charles, and John Parker who went 19:58:59. So it was awesome to see Max back out there again this year! Also on the chat, we have your DFL with 33 Hours, Jusup Sandoval! He has an amazing story going from a wheelchair to 100 miles. This guy has overcome so many hurdles that many, even doctors, would consider impossible. He first attempted the 100 distance at the Idaho Mountain Trail Ultra Festival, but you will hear what happened there. Then we've got Joshua Ham from Fort Benning! He got the 100 done with a time of 29:03:41! He's done races like the Blackbeards Revenge 100, Beast of the East 25 Mile, Merrill's Mile, and the Run Undead Trail Party 100 Miler! And, we've got Michelle Speer who ran her first 100 miler! She got that first belt buckle with a time of 32:41:54! She's done races like the Cruel Jewel 50 Miler and the Tick Tock. This year she plans on taking on the Cruel Jewel 100, so this race was perfect for her to get that time on the feet training! The Forgotten Florida is located east of Orlando crossing multiple state forests, conservation and wildlife management areas presenting runners with one of the most biodiverse terrains. Large sections of it utilize the extensive Florida trail. While the terrain is mostly flat, it provides plenty of challenges to runners with its hot and humid climate and sometimes swampy and rainy terrain.
Poor decisions make for the best stories! This is a quote from Sarah Snyder's website. This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Tara Dower. Tara shares her last 13 months which was amazing and very successful. Here is her list; attempted Benton MacKaye FKT in September of 2021. Injured myself badly. One month later I raced my first 100 miler called Uwharrie 100. Won for women. Raced my second 100 in Alabama called Blood Rock and came in 2nd overall behind Jeff Browning. Umstead 100 in April was my next 100 and placed 3rd women. Cruel Jewel was the next month in May and got 2nd woman. One month later went for the Benton MacKaye FKT again and smashed the overall record with sub 5 days. I think it was 4 days and 21 hrs and some change. Went on a little vacation to California a month later and finished backpacking the JMT. Started training for Run Rabbit and working hard to prepare for CO with different methods. The race went well and placed 2nd woman behind Annie Hughes with a huge 6 mile push at the end where I ran sub 8 minute miles and passed #2 woman. Whoa right?! also check out Tara's YouTube channel. What an amazing person. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
Today on the podcast we have one of the most fascinating people I have even spoken with - Canyon Woodward. Canyon is a championship level trail and ultra runner, political campaign manager, and climate activist. Canyon's new short film, RURAL RUNNERS, is an intimate look into what it takes to show up, rain or shine, and how to balance running for yourself and running for your country. The film follows Maine State Senator Chloe Maxmin's House & Senate runs, as well as Canyon's demanding trail running career. It's a unique pairing of affairs - a fun, relevant and inspiring story that humanizes the political process and extends beyond the dark state of party politics. It's also about avoiding burnout - a common occurrence on the campaign trail - by prioritizing self-care, and bringing a bit of joy and purpose to everything we do. Canyon and Chloe also co-authored Dirt Road Revival, a fascinating book that details their work together and a path forward for important political work in rural communities. Here are some of Canyon's amazing recent race and FKT results: 10/01/22 - The Naturalist 30k // 2:15, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 8/26/22 - Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc // 25:08, 48th Overall // Chamonix, France 7/14/22 - S.C.A.R. // 13:33, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Great Smokies National Park, NC 7/01/22 - Art Loeb Trail // 5:38, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Shining Rock Wilderness, NC 5/21/22 - Sun Mountain 50k // 4:04, 1st Overall // Winthrop, WA 8/8/21 - USATF 50K Trail Championship // 5:18, 5th Overall // Danbury, NH 5/14/21 - Cruel Jewel 100 (106mi, 30,000 ft of elevation gain) // 22:36, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Blairsville, GA 3/20/21 - Assault on Blackrock // 1:06:21, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Sylva, NC 1/18/20 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 3:57, 1st Overall // Almond, NC 10/5/19 - The Naturalist 50k // 5:02, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 4/20/19 - Hellbender 100 Miler (24,000+ ft of elevation gain) // 23:22, 3rd Overall // Asheville, NC 1/20/19 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 4:10, 2nd Overall // Almond, NC You can learn more about Canyon at and watch RURAL RUNNERS at www.dirtroadorganizing.org and www.canyonwoodward.com. This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Jason Thienel. Mountain running is something that Jason is very passionate about. Being a Mountain Athlete for LaSportiva is a perfect fit because he is always dreaming big in his mountain pursuits. He has several big belt buckles as part of his accomplishments including UTMB and CCC in the Alps, Bigfoot 200, Cruel Jewel 100, Bryce Canyon 100, and Cloudsplitter 100. A few of his passion projects include the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the Double Art Loeb and Warner Parks 100. He also has completed the NoNo which is doing the No Business 100 twice, both directions, in one push. When Jason is not running, which isn't often, he enjoys gravel biking and rock climbing. He can also be found drinking espresso, playing hockey in the backyard with his Weimaraner puppy, Blanche, or adventuring with his wife of sixteen years, Amber. You can also find him at the local outdoor retailer in Nashville, Cumberland Transit, where he is one of the owners and general manager. Thanks for listening! This year at the Tahoe 200, several Floridians took on the challenge of coverage this years out and back course. I'm chatting with Melody Diehl, John Becker, and Justin Yonker! John and Melody finished 21 minutes apart (96:29:25 and 96:50:19) with Justin taking the great achievement of holding the 2nd to last finisher spot with a grand total of 99 hrs, 15 mins, and 30 seconds of the 100-hour time limit! Melody has done races like the Sand Spur, Long Haul 100, Iron Horse 100k, Gate2Gate, and Death at Depuis! John and Justin are also no strangers to the distance and mountains. John has done races like the Lake to Ocean, the Trident, Quest for the Crest, the Georgia Death Race, Barkley Fall Classic, and the Jacks 50k! Justin has done the Cruel Jewel, Long Haul 100, Ancient Oaks, the Javelina Hundred, and some awesome DNF's at the Bear 100 and the Hell Bender 100! This crew is in it for the challenge! The Tahoe 200 is the first and only 200-mile single loop mountain trail race in the United States on a typical year, however, this year it was an out-and-back due to wildfires and forestry recovery. This course this year was still upwards of over 31,000 feet of elevation! You also still get to see the clear blue waters of Lake Tahoe and run through the aspen meadows, rock gardens, powerline roads, and long ridge lines with stunning views of Lake Tahoe. There is even a section of supposedly evil garden gnomes!
Obviously, Tara Dower is amazing! She also holds the overall FKT for completing the entire Mountains to Sea trail. Needless to say, we had a lot to talk about! Enjoy! This year Mike Alberts, Courtney Joseph, Carmen Brockdorf, and Stephen Grieger were a few of the Floridians who took on the Cruel Jewel in the Chattahoochee National Forest of the North Georgia Mountains. This is a course that takes you on a wild ride through the Duncan Ridge from Vogel State Park to Blue Ridge and back. For Mike, Carmen, and Stephen… they all took on the “100” mile course that adds up to roughly 106 miles with 33,000 feet of gain and 33,000 feet of loss just to keep it interesting. Now for Courtney, she took on the 50 miler as her first ever 50 miler! The Cruel Jewel 50 is a point to point “50” miler that rounds up to roughly 56 total miles for 15,000 feet of gain and 15,000 feet of loss.
In this episode, Joe is going solo as Dave is getting ready to set out on his record breaking cross Canada attempt. In this episode, Joe and Dave catch up in the final pre-Transcon episode. Next time the two hosts talk Dave will be on the road and working his way across Canada. The two discuss mindset and preparation as Dave has just ten days till he starts running. Dave also talks to Joe about his upcoming race, the Cruel Jewel 100. A lot of big efforts are ahead for the two hosts, that is for sure.
