Guitar Master Grant Green: "Green Street"

Tonight's Jazz Feature is a round about tribute to St. Patrick's Day in that our Jazz Feature tonight is the initial album by master guitarist Grant Green entitled "Green Street". It was recorded by Blue Note Records on April 1,1961 but despite the date, Mr. Green was no fool! It put Grant Green who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri on the national Jazz map.as one of the two foremost guitarists to emerge in the 1960's along with Wes Montgomery. Green played the guitar like a saxophone and emphasized single lines and delivered these with his huge pure sound. He's featured here with just a trio, Green with Ben Tucker on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. The album consists of five selections with Monk's classic "Round About Midnight" being one and "Alone Together" being the other standard tune. The other three are Green's original tunes. This shows Green's talents in a pure light all the way and marked a great debut recording. "Green Street" is tonight's Jazz Feature...relax and enjoy.

In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Corbomite Maneuver, which aired on November 10, 1966, Star Date 1512.2. Novice navigator Lt. Dave Bailey spots a large spinning multi-colored cube floating in space. He advocates attacking it with phasers. Kirk instead orders the ship to back away from the object. The cube pursues them, emitting harmful radiation, and Kirk reluctantly destroys it. Thereafter a gigantic glowing sphere approaches the Enterprise, explaining that the destroyed cube was a border marker and the First Federation will destroy the Enterprise for trespassing into their territory. Kirk tries to bluff Balok, telling him that the Enterprise contains "corbomite", a substance that automatically destroys any attacker.  Kirk, McCoy, and Bailey form a boarding party to render assistance. They beam over and discover that the "Balok" on their monitor was an effigy. The real Balok, looking like a hyperintelligent human child, enthusiastically welcomes them aboard. He explains that he was merely testing the Enterprise and its crew to discover their true intentions. As Kirk and company relax, Balok expresses a desire to learn more about humans and their culture and suggests they allow a crew member to remain on his ship as an emissary of the Federation. Bailey happily volunteers, and Balok gives them a tour of his ship. Compliance Takeaways: Never pass up the chance for cross-cultural exchange. Should discipline have a remedial component or be simply punitive? How much stress can you or should you put on your employees?

Hello world! This is Dave Bailey and I'm the writer of the Founder Coach blog, which is now read by millions of entrepreneurs each year. If you've read any of my essays, you know I'm very open about the mistakes that I made when founding and building three venture-backed tech businesses. So I'm on a mission to share the stories of other CEOs that are also willing to be open about the harsh realities of raising venture capital, growing a team, and the mistakes that they've made—or are making right now. We'll be focusing on CEOs that have raised their Series A. Why Series A? Well, there are many thousands of entrepreneurs that want to raise a Series A, and if you're one of them, you'll learn what it actually takes to raise growth capital from people that just did it. And if you've already raised a growth round and you're scaling your business, you'll hear from others facing the same problems that you're facing—and maybe a few problems that are just around the corner. And for sure, some of these conversations are going to hit home. If you're into entrepreneurship, the Series A companies I'm speaking with are fascinating to learn about. After all, there are millions of ideas, but only a small number have the chance to really scale. So join me and listen in on powerful conversations with scale-up CEOs where they talk about things they may have never talked about before. Hit subscribe . . . the journey begins next week.

On today's show, I spoke with footwork expert Dave Bailey about how we can improve our movement on the court. Dave is the creator of the Bailey Tennis Footwork Method, used by top professionals all the way down to the amateur level. Dave has worked with over 21 Grand Slam Players, including Monica Seles, Jarmilla Gajdosova, Zang Shaui, Jelena Dokic, Bethanie Mattek, Anne Kethavong, Misaki Doe, Irina Falconi, and Vince Spadea. Dave has spent over 30 years studying and researching the steps and movements of the top tennis professionals. Clearly, he really knows his stuff about footwork. After his intensive study of the best players in the world, Dave created the Bailey Tennis Footwork Method, which is arguably the most advanced and comprehensive tennis footwork training program in the world today. Dave was a real pleasure to speak with, and I hope to someday take him up on his offer of doing scissor kick smashes in the sand dunes of Sydney, Australia. I'll try not to puke though :) Many thanks to Dave for the fantastic tips and information on how we can all level up our tennis footwork. And if you can only remember one thing that Dave said (originally from Nick Bollettieri), remember this: "it's footwork, not footwalk." We have the fantastic acts of Winter Foenander (who runs The Comedy Defect podcast), Dave Bailey (Kent legend) and Reverend Ravi Holy (Semi-Finalist of So You Think You're Funny 2016 and practicing Reverend of the village of Wye) We talk about being a comedian, the gig we just had and the different nuances of performing. We also discuss hostile crowds and weird gigs. We have some great anecdotes for our pilot episode.  If you like it, please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for :  Twitter: @DrunkComPod Facebook: The Drunken Comedian Podcast -  https://www.facebook.com/DrunkComPod/ Also check out  www.matthosscomedy.com for Matt Hoss live dates and shit. Topics discussed include the evolution of space exercise equipment, the ton of interesting shots used in this episode, space salads, and the horrible fate of Dave Bailey. Plus salient points on how odd looking, but well cast, Clint Howard is (we say it with love, Clint). Next on Random Trek: VOY S1E4 Time and Again. Host Scott McNulty with Clayton Morris.

Gerry Mulligan was one of the most distinctive of all the exponents of the modern baritone saxophone but that wasn't all there was to Mulligan. He was an ace arranger, composer, band leader and a more than competent pianist. Among his many bands it's his pianoless quartet that stands out in people's minds. The first one was put together in Los Angeles with trumpeter Chet Baker and was in many ways the most magical. The second was a while later with valve trombone master Bob Brookmeyer and the third is the subject of tonight's Jazz Feature and it has Mulligan with trumpet giant Art Farmer, bassist Bill Crow and drummer Dave Bailey. This definitive album was made for Columbia Records in late 1958 and early 1959. It's called "What Is There To Say?" after on of the songs. Two other standards are heard as well as several Mulligan compositions. It captures the best of this group and makes this version of The Mulligan Quartet arguably his finest Quartet. I leave it to you, the listener to decide.

When Grant Green first came on the international Jazz scene and signed, upon the recommendation of alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, to Blue Note Records, the owner of the record company, Alfred Lyon, was unsure how to present Green. Green was a solid blues player and was well versed in bop and standards. Lyon featured Green in an organ trio context but Grant wanted and loved the more accoustic setting with piano, bass and drums or just bass and drums. Many of Green's albums in an accoustic setting were not released until his death at 43 in 1979. Our Feature album was released early in Grant's recording career and stands as one of his most personal recordings. It's called "Green Street" and has Grant playing with Ben Tucker on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Three Green originals are presented along with two standards,"Alone Together" and one of the finest versions of Thelonious Monk's classic ballad, "'Round About Midnight." Pure unadulerated Grant Green.....visit Green Street tonight.
