Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! This past Saturday night at 11:53 PM, Tara Dower set the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days 18 hours 5 minutes, besting Karel Sabbe's 2018 mark by 13 hours and 32 minutes.Starting August 12th at 5:47 AM, Dower averaged 54+ miles per day over 2,197.4 miles of rugged and relentless terrain from Maine to Georgia to set the mark.In masterfully riding a fine line of passion, grit, faith, and resourcefulness, Tara and her crew have set a new standard on this trail. I said this on an Instagram post shortly after the news broke, but I'll say it here as well - it's easy to get caught up in the moment, especially in a year that has seen the likes of the first female Barkley finisher, a UTMB course record, and a Hardrock course record - but is this the female performance of the year? Or better yet, is this the overall performance of the year regardless of gender? This is an amazing time to be in the sport. With all that said, we were fortunate to have Tara on the podcast shortly after her feat. In this conversation, we cover topics all about the Appalachian Trail record around her background, preparation, strategy, execution, mindset, and processing of this monumental achievement. If you want more long-distance hiking trail or Appalachian Trail trail-specific content, be sure to check out our interviews with Will Peterson, Warren Doyle, and Jennifer Pharr Davis from the past year. We talk about all aspects of Will's effort including mental and physical preparation, multi-day strategy, highlights from his race report, the skillset to accomplish something of this stature, whether he plans to stay in this type of arena in the future, and some fun topics generated by listeners and viewers (like whether he'd do the full Appalachian Trail).Timestamps:00:00 Introduction and Initial Feelings06:40 The Long Trail and Other Routes10:38 Background and Skillset15:17 Motivation and Competition19:14 The Evolving FKT Scene24:17 Creating a Competitive Narrative and Mental Strategies27:04 Training and Preparation36:22 Planning and Adaptability in FKT Attempts55:46 The Future of FKTs: Amateurs and Professionals01:01:41 Data-Driven Goals for Optimal Performance01:09:18 Instigating Participation in the Multi-Day Scene01:11:06 Future in Multi-Day FKTs01:17:21 The Debate on Expanded FKT Leaderboards01:19:32 The Appalachian Trail and Future Challenges01:23:38 Reflections on FKT of the Year Snub01:26:06 The Unique Challenges of the 100 Mile Wilderness01:31:24 Regulating External Communication on Unsupported Efforts01:41:11 Gratitude for the CrewPartners:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK20 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 20% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack10 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 10% off your next order.deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20) to get 20% off your next order.Pillar Performance - use code Singletrack15 at checkout on their website (https://pillarperformance.shop/) to get 15% off your next order. We talk about filling out your dash, living a full life. Then I interview Liz Derstine, an accomplished trail runner and FKT (Fastest Known Time) record holder. We discuss Liz's trail name, her experience on the Appalachian Trail, her connection with Warren Doyle, and her transition to self-supported FKT attempts. Liz also shares her challenges with blisters, animal encounters, sleep deprivation, and hallucinations during her FKTs. She discusses balancing her running and music careers and expresses her love for long-distance trail FKTs. The episode concludes with Liz's recent FKT attempt on the Colorado Trail and her support for her friend's FKT attempt on the same trail after hers ended. Follow Liz on Instagram Takeaways Liz Derstine, also known as Mercury, is an accomplished trail runner and FKT record holder. She gained her trail name from a song she listened to while preparing for a practice hike on the Appalachian Trail. Liz's first through-hike and FKT attempt was on the Appalachian Trail, with Warren Doyle as her support. She was inspired by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Scott Jurek's books and attended a workshop by Warren Doyle to mentally prepare for the AT. Liz transitioned to self-supported FKT attempts on trails like the Long Trail and the Penhody Trail. She faced challenges such as blisters, animal encounters, sleep deprivation, and hallucinations during her FKT attempts. Liz balances her running and music careers, using her run commute as a way to decompress at the end of the day. She finds joy in long-distance trail FKT attempts and plans to continue pursuing them in the future. Liz also values the supportive nature of the trail running community and the willingness to help each other achieve their goals. This week, a chef has created a hidden culinary hot spot in Asheville, North Carolina that's attracting national attention for its eclectic menu and Filipino hospitality. Also, every thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) begins with a first step. Famed hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis shares hers. And the holy month of Ramadan ends with a feast. But war and famine in Gaza muted some of this year's celebrations. We'll have these stories and more this week, Inside Appalachia.
Jennifer Pharr Davis is perhaps best known in our community for her two fastest known times set on the Appalachian Trail in 2008 and 2011. The latter record, in my humble opinion, stands as one of the most important and influential feats in the ultra-endurance community during the 2010s.Jennifer is also the author of an excellent book called 'The Pursuit of Endurance', which profiles well-known athletes from the long-distance Fastest Known Time (FKT) scene, including Scott Jurek, Heather Anderson, David Horton, and Warren Doyle. During this conversation, we gain insights from Jennifer on the state of the FKT world. We discuss whether the current media attention, regulations, and styles that drive many modern athletes are a net positive for this space. And Jennifer also shares how she approached the trail and provides updates on what she's currently involved in.Sponsors:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 20% off your next order.Kodiak Cakes - use code Singletrack15 at checkout on their website (https://kodiakcakes.com/singletrackpodcast) to get 15% off your next order.Brooks Running - check out their High Point clothing collection and new and improved Cascadia 17 shoe at this link (https://www.brooksrunning.com/singletrack).Oladance - use code ST at this link (https://oladance.com/ST) to get $30 off the Oladance OWS2 headphones.Links:Follow Jennifer on Instagram, Personal Website, Pursuit of Endurance BookFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, Twitter, Youtube, and PatreonSupport the show

This week, we step on the Appalachian Trail with one of America's most accomplished hikers, Jennifer Pharr Davis. We also talk to the director of the Augusta Heritage Center. Each summer, dozens of students attend workshops to learn traditional skills. This year, the center is turning 50. We'll also visit the steel drum capital of America – which, believe it or not, is right here in Appalachia. You'll hear these stories and more this week, Inside Appalachia.
On this West Virginia Morning, the Appalachian Trail stretches from Georgia to Maine, and North Carolina native, Jennifer Pharr Davis has not only through-hiked the trail three times, but she has also set records for speed. Inside Appalachia Host Mason Adams talks to Davis about her love of hiking and what it takes to get started. If we are talking about Women's Performance, how does hiking 2190+ miles in less than 47 days sound to you? Jennifer Pharr Davis describes herself as a part of nature. Thru-hiking on 6 different continents, Davis has set multiple fastest times on multi-day trails around the world. This week, Sara welcomes Jennifer to the podcast to discuss the drive and grit it takes to wrestle with your body and mind on these gruelling long-distance thru-hikes. At 21, with an Ironman finish under her belt and a history in high-school athletics, Jennifer decided that hiking the Appalachian trail was the next "step" for her. As Jennifer and Sara discuss, it was on this first thru-hike where she realized that her heart was on the trail - and she made sure to centre the rest of her life around it. Sara and Jennifer get real with one another and discuss the power of grit, determination, and the difference between stopping and quitting. Caet also details how her backcountry goals have shifted since being diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, how she manages EDS, and why she thinks it's important to be vocal about this chronic condition. We wrap the show with an overview of our AT road trip thus far including Chaunce's absurd sun burn, a triple crown of emotional high points on trail, a listener voicemail, and a listener educates us on the Philmont Poop Rating. Scott is the best US Male Ultra Runner ever. That may change, but for now, no one can match 7 consecutive wins at the WS100 plus wins at other marquee events. He set the S-N FKT on the fabled Appalachian Trail in 2015, with a desperate effort at the end, eclipsing Jennifer Pharr Davis' time by 3hrs 13mins. The next year Scott's friend Karl Meltzer lowered it by 9hrs 29mins, then "the Belgian Dentist" Karel Sabbe demolished the overall AT FKT by doing it 41days 7hrs 39mins. Scott and his wife Jenny co-authored, "North: Finding My Way On The Appalachian Trail" and were the 3rd ever guests on the Fastest Known Podcast. Karel was actually our 2nd guest ever (take a look and listen - three years ago and these episodes are worth it). Time to catch up! On August 4, Scott went back for another go. This time with plenty of preparation and knowledge, unlike the first time when he and Jenny "On-sighted it". How did that go? "I started to feel my left quad on the 4th day. I shifted weight to the right, then that tightened up badly. I tried to slow down and walk it off, but that is not possible on the northern section of the AT." Very disappointing. Listen as Scott describes his specific training for this effort, as well as nutrition specifics. He feels that starting in the north, where the terrain is more difficult than in Georgia may have been a factor. "You don't get warm by sticking your head in a furnace." It's still too early to think about this, but we have to ask .... will he go back? "I still have so much to learn, and I still have more to give.” "You had to go and wake the dragon". - Jenny to Scott
Today is our centennial show, and oh boy, is it a beast. For starters, as a thank you to you, our beautiful listeners- we are giving away some awesome prizes, including a Gossamer Gear tent, pack, and trekking poles- but really that just scratches the surface. We're chatting with Jennifer Pharr Davis and Brew Davis about their current COVID Recovery Tour- a family road trip touring the national parks, and a concerted effort to both prioritize their mental health and inspire others to do the same. In hilarious Hiker Trash fashion, the Davis fam conducts this interview from their hotel room's bathroom floor, because, kids. We wrap the show with a wild and somewhat inebriated series of segments- including some newbies such as Never Have I Ever backpacking edition, Gross or Not Gross, and Random Backpacking Advice of the Day. And to really crank this one to 11, the segment portion of the show features our bud and resident yeti, Jabba aka The Real Hiking Viking aka Tom. Strap in. [divider] Listen Download this episode. This week we spoke with Liz Anjos, aka “Mercury,” who just finished and set the new women's South to North supported record on the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine. 51 days, 16 hours, and 30 minutes. Liz’s record attempt was supported by Warren Doyle, who was also in the studio with us and is a hiker, educator, and expert on the Appalachian Trail; who set an endurance record on the trail in 1973, completing it in 66 days. He currently holds the informal record for hiking the entire trail the most times (18!). Liz was also supported by family in Virginia and Pennsylvania, and friends throughout the long distance hiking and trail running communities in the Eastern US. The women’s overall record stands at 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes, set by Jennifer Pharr Davis in 2011 hiking North to South. Thanks for listening! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
We first met Chloë de Camara a few weeks ago on the show, informing us about the critical Leave No Trace principles and, in a follow-up conversation, it was clear that Chloë had her own Appalachian Trail story about her trek in 2015. She was very intentional about how she came to the trail, writing a thesis about Appalachian Trail thru-hiking as a spiritual experience and volunteering for the ATC. As you'll hear, meeting the inspirational Jennifer Pharr Davis was a great motivator for her own journey. If you'd like to see more of what Chloë does, click on this link to the ATC's Start Smart program https://youtu.be/J_-evEG3fFg Also today, we have the start of a new series; A Woman of a Certain Age, where Kate Stillwell prepares for and then attempts a thru-hike of the AT from April 1. In this episode, Steve and Kate talk, along with Kate's daughter Alexa, or Tinkerbell. Our new book, Grandma Gatewood's Walk, by Ben Montgomery, teaches us more about the harshness of Emma's life and the early days of her epic journey. Jennifer Pharr Davis is a hiker, author, speaker and National Geographic Adventurer of the year who has covered over 14,000 miles of long distance hiking on 6 different continents. In 2011, Jennifer covered the 2185 mile Appalachian Trail (AT) in 46 days, 11 hrs and 20 minutes and she became the first women to set an overall record. She received the ultra runner performance of the year award for this feat. In this interview we talk about growing up on the AT, playing sports, and transitioning into the world of endurance sports (running, ironman, ultras). At the age of 21, Jen had a feeling that she just couldn't shake and knew she had to go hike the AT...solo...without any backpacking experience. Little did she know this experience would change her life and set her life on an entirely new trajectory. We discuss hiking while pregnant and with small children, working through adversity on the trail, how she got her trail name and so much more! Back in 2011, Jennifer Pharr Davis set the record for fastest thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail for both men and women. Afterward, she backpacked over 14,000 miles on 6 different continents, wrote 8 books, and started Blue Ridge Hiking Company in Asheville, NC. Needless to say, she knows the trail well and is a leader in the outdoor industry. After all this hiking, she’s come to know herself in a unique way. Those days and nights spent outside taught her that it’s not about distance covered, but about self-awareness, mindfulness, connection, healing, positive body image and persevering joy. We also speak with Sommerville Johnston, a licensed therapist and wilderness guide, to figure out what role nature has in mental health and recovery from life's busy-ness. Alyssa is a “Professional Triathlete who can’t seem to shake her ultrarunning habit”. She has finished 30 Ironman Triathlons, 40 ultra races, and once finished 4th in the Taiwan Ironman using all borrowed gear. On July 31, 2018, she set a new women's FKT on Vermont’s 273mi Long Trail of 5 days, 2 hours. Alyssa describes being inspired by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Nikki Kimball, both of whose Long Trail times she bettered, while noting, “Last year was my 4th as a professional triathlete. I needed to do something different - I needed to keep my fire lit”. She once did two Ironmans on successive weekends in different continents, but notes, “The Long Trail was way harder - the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The terrain is so variable - unless you’ve spent time on this trail it’s hard to describe - it changes every few hundred meters - it’s soul-crushing. Alyssa notes that women tend to want to be very prepared before they undertake something, while men are willing to jump in, even if they’re not 100%. So her advice to women? “Go do it. There’s nothing stopping you, because you get to make it your own. It’s like your own version of The Amazing Race - you get to do that yourself with FKTs”.

Buddy Wier is something of a late bloomer. He became interested in hiking after his retirement, accumulating gear though not immediately getting out to hike. He had always been a traveler and soon combined his love of travel with the various opportunities that arose to hike. Having traveled extensively and hiking when and where he could, Buddy was inspired to hike the AT when he heard the inspirational Jennifer Pharr Davis speak about her FKT record. So, over the next couple of years, Buddy took on this monumental task at the age of 69, finally reaching Katahdin at the age of 71. Buddy would be happy to field any questions that you may have and he can be reached at wieriii@att.net. Instead of If I Did It Again this week, I have a couple of parents, Kathi and Bob Bucklin, who endured, and enjoyed, their daughter's hike back in 2014. Jennifer Pharr Davis has hiked the Appalachian Trail three times, won the 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award, has written five books on her adventures outside and at one point, held the record for the fastest known thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. But before she was an icon in the American hiking community, in 2005, she set out on her first thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail as a recent college graduate with little knowledge of the outdoors in hopes of taking a risk and finding something else along the way. In Episode 2 she talks about her youth, the tragedy she encountered on the trail, and how she learned to be confident in who she was and overcome her own insecurities. "My book is about endurance; specifically, it’s about this emerging sport known “fastest known times,” which are basically trail records on the super long trails like the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. But it also talks about the really amazing people who have set these records, and some of them are my friends and mentors. I wanted to talk about them and then also share my experience as a record setter and illustrate how it was so empowering for me to realize that there is no gender divide when it comes to endurance." The Pursuit of Endurance empowers readers to unlock phenomenal endurance and leverage newfound grit to achieve personal bests in everything from sports and family to the boardroom. National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and Appalachian Trail record setter Jennifer Pharr Davis sets out on a new quest to find out what defines endurance, where it comes from, and how we can harness it to achieve our dreams. On July 31, 2011, Jennifer Pharr Davis set the FKT (fastest known time) record on the Appalachian Trail, completing the trail in just 46 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes—a feat that takes most hikers six months. Hiking an average of 47 miles per day, Davis was the first woman to claim the overall title on the Appalachian Trail. Since her thru-hike record, which she held for four years, Davis has set out on a new quest—the quest to find out what exactly defines endurance, where it comes from, if gender plays a role, and how we can we harness it to achieve our dreams. THE PURSUIT OF ENDURANCE: Harnessing the Record-Breaking Power of Strength and Resilience, aims to answer those questions, and more, through interviews with renowned endurance athletes, fellow record setters, an exercise physiology expert, and through her own accomplishments in the world of endurance hiking, backpacking, and trail running.
Adam Haritan is the founder of Learn Your Land, as well as a wild food enthusiast, researcher, and forager. He learned the value of wild food foraging while studying nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh, where he discovered just how beneficial wild foods could be in optimizing human health. Wild plants, on average, are more nutritious than their cultivated counterparts (i.e. wild blueberries vs. domesticated blueberries, wild lettuce vs. iceberg lettuce). The wild food diet is the diet that we, as Homo sapiens, have been consuming for the majority of our time on this planet, and it is the diet that we are most adapted to. Today, very few Americans consume any wild foods, and instead subsist on nutrient-deficient products that scarcely resemble anything real or natural. It’s no wonder that degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, and chronic inflammation are so prevalent. We have abandoned our natural diet and are suffering as a result. This realization has led Adam to pursue a lifestyle of wild food foraging while unearthing the forgotten knowledge we once cherished. It is Adam’s hope to share the enthusiasm and passion he has for wild foods with you! Adam’s Challenge; Attend a nature walk where someone is going to teach you about the natural world. If you liked this interview, check out episode 37 with Jennifer Pharr Davis where we discuss her record-setting hiking career.
My guest today is Jennifer Pharr Davis. She is an author, speaker, and a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Jennifer is among the most well known of American long distance hikers. She holds the record for the women’s FKT for a thru-hike of the Appalachian trail; a record which was the overall outright record for several years and fell by only 3 hrs 12 minutes in the summer of 2015. She has hiked over 12,000 miles on six different continents, including thru-hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail (three times), the Colorado Trail, the Long Trail in Vermont, the Bibbulmun Track in Australia, and numerous trails in Europe and South America, including the Tour du Mont Blanc, which ultra marathon runners will be familiar with. Connect with Jennifer: 1) On the trail! 2) Facebook: Jennifer Pharr Davis 3) Twitter and Instagram: JenPharrDavis 4) Her company: BlueRidgeHikingCo.com 5) Books: Becoming Odyssa and Called Again: A Story of Love and Triumph She answered many questions on this in depth interview, including: You hiked that AT in 2005, 2008, and the overall record setting year 2011. Your first women’s record of the trail in 2008 was a bit over 57 days; in 2011 you destroyed that record and did the trail in a bit over 46 days. How did that enormous improvement come about? Would you describe the demands of a long-distance thru-hike? Granted that weather can have a big impact, what does a ‘typical’ day look like for a long distance thru hiker? Are you ever running/jogging during a thru-hike or is it all hiking? Tell us about your training for a thru-hike. In your experience, would a 3-4+ week thru-hike be good training for ultra marathons of 100 miles or longer? How do you handle sleep deprivation, or functioning on little sleep, for weeks on end? Tell us about your nutrition for a thru-hike. Tell us about your foot care on a thru-hike. You wrote an article recently for the New York Times for which you explored the topic of sex differences, or lack thereof, in ultra distance events. Tell us about that. Tell us about the psychological demands of a major thru-hike. As an exceptional, experienced, and accomplished ultra-endurance athlete, you have surely had some very dark moments (mentally). After graduating from college with a Classics degree, Jennifer wasn't sure what she wanted to do with her life. She is drawn to the Appalachian Trail, a 2175-mile footpath that stretches from Georgia to Maine. Though her friends think she's crazy and her mom worries about her safety, she sets out alone to hike the trail, hoping it will give her time to think about what she wants to do next. The next four months prove to be the most physically and emotionally challenging season of her life. She quickly discovers that thru-hiking is harder than she had imagined: coping with blisters and aching shoulders from the 30-pound pack she carries; sleeping on the hard wooden floors of trail shelters or trying to put up a tent in the dark; hiking through endless torrents of rain and even a blizzard. With every step she takes, Jennifer transitions from an over-confident college graduate to a student of the trail. She learns that she is stronger than she thought she was as she braves situations she never imagined before her thru-hike. The trail is full of unexpected kindness, generosity, and humor. And when tragedy strikes, she learns that she can depend on other people to help her in times of need. Read more about her 2005 AT journey in her adventure memoir, Becoming Odyssa. It is a drama filled, laugh out loud, coming-of-age story that will be enjoyed by both hikers and non-hikers.
