"It's the idea that how you're together matters far more than what you're doing together. It's this “how” that determines whether the relationship is going to thrive." —Michael Fulwiler of The Gottman Institute So how do good relationships work? How important are compatible relationships to our life? Falling in love can lead to a relationship, but what is needed for it to truly last? Compatibility. If two entities align: schedules, beliefs, age, culture, work ethic, the assumption is often that a match has been made. Compatibility is the synchronization of different values between partners; It is how you get along as a couple - moving, loving, and growing in harmony. Understanding your role in someone else's life is extremely important and may look and feel different to each of you. It's how one lives their life, exists, and interacts with others that will ultimately determine the quality of their life and thus the quality of their relationships. In this episode we dive into the Importance of finding a compatible mate that will go the distance with you; How to resolve conflict; and the Skills needed to manage day to day life and what an excellent day looks like. My next guest will help guide you through relationship dynamics, conflict resolution, and managing day to day life. After serving 27 years in the Army, Colonel Rob Campbell retired to the North Carolina coast and wrote a book called, It's Personal not Personnel. This book was inspired by his position in the Army and he applies leadership principles from his brigade experiences to a more personal approach in the workplace. Rob uses a people centric approach in helping organizations and businesses invest in their people, achieve better results and attract happier employees. Most Americans Live to Work whereas most Europeans Work to Live. Are you someone who loves their job and feels rewarded? According to the 2017 Gallup Poll, 70% of employees in today’s workforce are not engaged at work, meaning they are not psychologically committed to their jobs, happy in the workplace and likely to be making positive contributions to their organizations. Chances are, you are or at some point will be part of the 70% of employees who are disengaged at work, drawing a paycheck and going home. Or maybe part of the 51% of employees actively looking for another job. If you are an avid listener of this podcast you have met plenty of people who genuinely love what they do for work and feel fulfilled doing it. What do people really desire in order to be happy? The answer will obviously vary from person to person. Rob researched Desires of People, specifically soldiers and employees. He found everyone has value and potential. As a brigade leader he was charged with preparing men and women for combat and remembered what they desired to be at their very best. Rob had more than 70 subordinate organizational leaders serving under him in his two-year tenure in brigade command, each with different desires. Rob's personal study resulted in a short desires collection or "List of Six" that he uses as a vehicle dashboard to examine his own organization and people, and offers them as a way for you to implement them in your own ogranization. The List of Six are: Fulfillment, Autonomy, Praise & Recognition, Safety, Discipline, and Growth. In this podcast we break down a few of the desires on the List of Six and discuss how you can start applying them, build better relationships, and create better leaders in your own organization. We also discuss how to attract and keep employees who subscribe to company values and culture. Many people think of physical therapy, or PT, as "rehab", or something you need after surgery or an injury. There are many misconceptions when it comes to PT like you need a referral to see a physical therapist, or it's only appropriate for people who have had surgery or seriously injured themselves, or physical therapy is only exercise based. I admit, before meeting Ryan I had the misconception that physical therapy doesn't work because it hadn't worked for me in the past. Ryan Godfrey with Change the Game Physical Therapy is literally changing the game when it comes to managing pain, healing injuries, and getting people back to doing what they love. Ryan believes PT empowers individuals to take a pro-active approach to their health. He also believes Physical Therapists should be seen as the experts in musculoskeletal health, providing clients with a holistic alternative to medications, injections and surgery. Physical Therapists can also educate clients on the importance of lifestyle modifications, like nutrition, exercise, and sleep, to aid in rehab and athletic performance. It is clear when listening to this interview that Ryan truly loves what he does but that wasn't always the case. Ryan was working in a traditional clinic setting where his job was to see as many patients as possible in a day. However, Ryan wanted to work with patients on a deeper level, and have one on one time with each individual client. He wanted an opportunity to educate them on their injury, have adequate time for treatment and educate them on home exercises and lifestyle modifications to help them heal long term. In the traditional clinic setting, Ryan's focus was on quantity of patients not quality. His job was to document and move on. The clinic didn't care about quality as long as volume was high. Ryan had no real motivation to increase his productivity nor did he receive any praise or recognition for his work. The effort level to get clients better was low because there wasn't enough time to spend with each person. Ultimately led him feeling that he wasn't helping people improve in timely manner and he wasn't able to follow his passion which is to get them back to the activity or sport they were doing before. As an athlete I recently found myself dealing with a chronic issue that no amount of band-aid fixes could help. I had tried it all: massage, cupping, topicals, foam rolling, stretches, chiropractic care; all to no avail. I thought this was something I was going to have to "deal" with the rest of my life. I had heard about dry needling through my CrossFit Coach, Marissa, and I admit when I first heard the word needle, I was apprehensive. After doing research and talking to my extremely knowledgeable chiropractor, Dr. Dave Russ, I finally made the appointment to see Ryan. And I'm so glad I did. Listen to this podcast to hear my story of healing, my journey of how I got better, and how Ryan's journey has changed from unhappy employee to happy entrepreneur. Nowadays parents are clamoring to put their kids in the best sports programs, like travel baseball. Travel baseball is part of an $8 billion industry known as travel youth sports, where you have to pay to play. Youth sports has become a money making machine and it's no surprise there has been an 8% drop in the last decade on the number of kids who play competitive sports because of the increased costs. Rec leagues are dwindling and in it's place professional grade fields are being built so kids can play more competitively. Clary Baseball started in 2010 and offers player development baseball instruction and parent consultations. Casey Clary works with baseball players (and their parents) between the ages of 10 and 18 who are looking to get better and improve their skills. The sport of Baseball is always changing and in order to keep up with the competition players have to work on their skills, like footwork, hand eye coordination, and strength + conditioning. Casey found that through his 9 years of working with parents the question he was asked most often was, "is my kid good enough?" This question thrusted Casey on a journey to give parents as much information as possible about the world of baseball through his book: Baseball Parents: Is your kid good enough?. Casey's love for baseball started at age 5 and he played all the way through high school. After his senior year he received a scholarship to a division 2 college, in a small town in North Carolina. After his college senior year he signed as a free agent with a Minor League team out of Canada, called the Winnipeg Goldeyes. He went on to play 4 more years signing with 3 other teams. Casey doesn’t have many regrets, other than not staying back on the slider. He says, "the minor leagues are a lot of fun but they are also painful. It’s a cut-throat industry and everyone is a “sprained ankle” away from getting released. There are long bus rides and long flights that leave at 5:30 in the morning!" He didn’t make a million bucks but he got paid to play baseball! He says he learned a lot and he learned to listen! Casey's rookie year of pro-ball was the most challenging. He was good in college and everyone is good in the pros! He had to make adjustments and make them quick. He had to retain information and adapt daily. He loved it! Casey is passionate about baseball and wants to share that passion with others. He wants to help other kids succeed and follow their dreams and he wants to help the parents understand what it takes to get their kids there. Casey says, "if there’s anything I can’t over teach it's work ethic! If you want to get paid to play this game, you have to work at it. DAILY!" CBD, also known as hemp oil, is a hot topic right now and often comes with a negative stigma. This episode is here to give you all you need and want to know about CBD. CBD is a compound of the hemp plant that has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, neuro-protectant qualities, and healing properties. My guest this week is Dr. Pete Gemelli, a Physiatrist who works with pain patients who deal with chronic and acute pain. Due to the rise of opioid overuse and abuse, Dr. Gemelli wanted something that wasn't a narcotic that he could prescribe to pain patients. Dr. Gemelli set out on a mission to find an alternative and after months of research he decided to consider CBD as an alternative. One of the first challenges he faced was finding a product that was clean and pure where he knew what was in it. Ultimately this led him to create Physician Selected: a broad spectrum, high quality hemp oil that contains very minimal THC, offering users the peace of mind of a safe product that isn’t harmful. In this podcast episode we: Break down the common misconceptions of CBD products Share how CBD is different from THC/Marijuana. We learn: Why Dr. Gemelli created his own product and started prescribing it to his patients. How his product is made, or the extraction and filtering process. How it's different from other products on the market. Is cannabis medicine safe? Proper dosage (because let's face it, that's really important when you're taking a new product). Health benefits. I recently met up with fitness guru, Marlo Fisken, at Pole Expo in Las Vegas. She was gracious enough to share an hour of her time chatting with me about her company, Flow Movement, which is more than just a brand; it's a lifestyle. Flow movement includes apparel line, Floor Flow tutorials and teacher training, pole work, Flowbility, and events + workshops that bring in guest teachers. You may be wondering, what the heck is Flow? When we talk about Flow, we mean the exciting feeling of being in the zone. Flow is defined as an “optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best.” Experts say only 5% of workers spend their time in a blissful, high-productivity work state. Imagine the impacts on your performance and mood if you could increase your work flow! Flow doesn’t just heighten creativity in the moment, it heightens it over the long haul. In other words, being in flow actually trains us to be more creative. Marlo gushes on the importance movement has on our bodies. Movement is more than just moving our bodies; it encompasses the clothing we wear, the shoes on our feet, and the furniture we sit on. Marlo's goal is to help us into the environments we create for ourselves and think about what's valued when it comes to movement. She would like to see more things that create movement. Think movement zones, interactive exhibits; things that get people to step outside of the sedentary lifestyle, off their phones, and moving. Marlo has been dancing going on 30 years. She started competing in the sport of pole dancing in 2009 and has won 3 different titles: 2010 American Pole Fitness Association Female Champion 2011 Aerial Pole International Champion 2013 International Pole Dance Fitness Associations Instructor of the Year She is most known for her creativity on the pole; creating moves that people have never seen before. Marlo travels seven months out of the year and currently resides in Boulder, Colorado, which she dubs a "movement bubble." Filmmakers love to tell stories. My guest this week was named one of the top 25 event filmmakers on the planet. His company, Lifestage Films, is most known for their destination weddings. Learn what it's like to go behind the lens and how Matt gets to create long-lasting memories for brides, grooms, their families, and even businesses. Matt studied International Business at Appalachian State and then went on work with a non-profit in Acapulco, Mexico. Matt's job was to help raise money for an orphanage. He came up with an idea to make a video and that's when his love for filmmaking was born. When he moved back to the states he started to think about what he could do to continue his passion. He soon realized a niche in the wedding industry that wasn't being met. There were plenty of videographers that documented weddings but Matt wanted to do much more than that. He wanted to tell stories with audio and video. Matt's idea has grown into more than just weddings. He now gets to tell the story for businesses. Matt is a storyteller, not a commercial maker. His sister company, Harvest Filmworks, creates 2-3 minute brand identity films for corporations and businesses. Known for their aerial work with HD quadcopters, they had the pleasure of filming the largest home in the United States: The Biltmore Estate. One of my favorite and compelling films by Harvest Filmworks is with Hometown Hires, a company using a unique initiative to hire skilled people that just need a second chance. Matt and his buddy Ryan created Studio Sherpas to appeal to entrepreneurs. A sherpa is a guide that helps others. Their webinars and online training aim to help business owners increase profits without losing their creativity. With amazing guests and relevant topics, the Studio Sherpas podcast will give you actionable items you can actually do in your business – and in your life – to help you get the most out of it all. Check out the podcast on iTunes and Spotify. Their webinars and online training can be done anytime and anywhere, in the comfort of your home, office, or even hotel room. "Resilience is the most needed, the least known, and most ignored skill on planet earth." -Matt Domogala Chances are, sooner or later people will become sick of their job or hit a wall in their career. Chances are, at some point in our lives or career, we will experience the feeling of being stuck, unmotivated, unappreciated, or under-valued in the workplace. Matt believes that employees need to be treated as human beings, not "human doings". Building relationships between employees and management build better leaders, employees, and results. Matt says managers are result oriented and want to see hard results. Matt believes you can't get "hard results" without "soft skills", like encouragement and empathy. Matt's company, EnergiZing, is building better relationships and energy in the workplace. The biggest influence on workplace culture is the way employees communicate. Better communication produces better results. Happy people produce results. Matt Domogala is an "Edutainer", business mentor, trainer, coach, and entrepreneur who helps organizations build resiliance by helping their employees learn how to sustain the pressure and demands without compromising results. Matt has been sharing his knowledge and experience for over 15 years, hosting conferences, workshops and lectures in the U.S. and Europe. Matt's own weaknesses and eagerness to overcome them inspired him to create the concept of “Energizing us”. Initially it was difficult for him to deal with his flaws. He felt this overwhelming lack of energy and that prevented him from materializing his dreams and goals. As he was researching and reading to help himself out, he ended up building the concept of “Energizing us”. At his workshops he shows participants how to build energy and how to increase resilience in order to handle professional and life hardships. Matt has inspired many participants and has coached many companies including Metlife, Adidas, and many others. He has also performed at conferences organized by Wharton Business School, Columbia, and Yale Universities. He passionately applies the newest discoveries in psychology and human brain studies to business by presenting his concept of life and work expressed in a simple phrase: “Energizing us.” Connect with Matt: www.energizing.us
Bodysurfing is one of the oldest water sports where surfers ride waves with just their body. Bodysurfers ride with the wave, on their belly, versus on top of it. Nowadays the sport is quickly gaining popularity with plenty of competitions popping up all across the globe. The most beautiful part is you don't need any special training - anyone can do it! Be warned however, it may make you feel like a kid again. After a bodysurfing injury left Don with multiple surgeries he soon began to focus his energies elsewhere. Don was a professional fire-fighter and an active member of his local Surf Life Saving Club at Coogee Beach, NSW, Australia; the beach was where he spent his youth. He was also a strong swimmer who competed in many different sporting events. In 1983 he won the title of the World Surf Life Saving Body-surfing Champion. Through these endeavors and after several trips to Hawaii in the mid 80’s, while competing regularly in bodysurfing contests, he became interested in water flow and fluid dynamics, thus allowing the DMC Fins idea to take root. Don’s idea was to design and create a type of swim propulsion fin (or flipper) that would revolutionize his chosen sport. The Hydro Finz were born. The design of the fin was unique, as it’s “V Rail" design gave it the edge on the competition and proved functional in wave riding, particularly deep hollow tubes. The V Rail acted like small surfboard fins, only with 8 edges to add traction, instead of 2 to 3 fins found on surfboards. Don travelled extensively to secure distributors for his one and only product and due to its unique patented qualities and performance, DMC gained sales and recognition worldwide. Since then over a million pairs of Hydro fin products have been sold in over 20 countries. DMC now has several different models of fins and offers fins for swimmers of the pool and ocean. Don’s bodysurfing and swimming knowledge combined, plus product innovation, have created a line of products that suit the beginner to the serious aquatic athlete. In recent years Don won another World Championship for Bodysurfing in his 'Masters' age group and qualified as a swim coach. "I don't think you have to be someone who can swim like an olympic swimmer," she said. "You just have to be able to see when the waves are coming, when is the right time to take off, what's the right time to make that commitment and the right time to get out and that's something you can learn with experience and there's lots of people willing to help you learn that." -Meredith Rose, Three time World Bodysurfing Champion FB: @DMCFins | I:#DMCFins | Twitter @DMCFins | YouTube: DMCVids | https://dmcfins.com
Mama Maisha is an Asheville, NC-based non-profit making motherhood safer for the Luo tribe in the Mara region of Tanzania. Mama Maisha, or "Mother Life" in Swahili, was founded to provide effective, sustainable care in challenging, resource-limited circumstances. The number one cause of death of a mother in subsaharan Africa is post-partum bleeding. Pregnancy complication-related deaths are rare in developed countries, but in Tanzania, one mother dies every single hour. Mama Maisha is a safe motherhood intervention project founded by two doctors, Reta Graham, MD (OBGYN), and Jeff Graham, MD (General Practitioner), in affiliation with local and regional non-governmental services. Mama Maisha works at the village level, providing essential prenatal care and delivery services, as well as education and resources to empower women to make wise decisions regarding family planning, healthy pregnancies, and a safe delivery for every child. Women in rural Tanzania have poor access to health care services, especially maternal health care. A limited number of health facilities paired with an undeveloped road system makes it difficult for pregnant women to access quality prenatal care and delivery services. Community-based maternal and reproductive health advocates are being trained to provide support to mothers in a culture where women aren't often comfortable making choices regarding their own health and safety. Dr. Reta Graham has been an OBGYN doctor for 15 years and currently works at MAHEC. We spend a little time talking about the U.S. healthcare system, what a comprehensive healthcare system might look like, and reproductive health access for women. Learn how Mama Maisha is making a difference in the lives of women in Tanzania and how access to healthcare is one of the most important topics for women across the globe. Running wasn't always something Peyton was passionate about. In fact, he never ran a day in his life until 2012. Remnants of a former car accident left him with degenerated discs in his neck and required him to have a discectomy of his cervical spine. During his recovery, one single wrong move could leave him paralyzed. Peyton refused to let the victim stance mentality win. He resorted to walking for exercise. Walking soon led to running and running soon led to racing. 5k races led to half marathons. Half marathons led to marathons. During his second marathon, Peyton started feeling nauseous around mile 20 and did a walk/run for the last 6 miles. He chalked off his disappointment to dehydration and rookie mistakes. Weeks later Peyton was running a 10k in Oak Island where he fell to the ground just 200 meters from the finish. Peyton was rushed to the hospital and after many tests and doctor visits he was diagnosed with Bradycardia and type II Atrioventricular Block, which required him to get a pacemaker. Inspired by other adaptive athletes like Buddy 1 Leg (skateboarder/snowboarder), Misty Diaz (Spartan athlete), and Mikey Da Temple (surfer), Peyton refused to be defined by his circumstance. He hired a running coach, started training for marathons, and 11 months post pacemaker surgery he PR'd his first marathon. 2 years to the day of getting his pacemaker he qualified for Boston. Peyton is still running wild and free today, even during the eye of a hurricane. Peyton talks about his set backs, injuries, and life as a "wired athlete". He now aims to inspire and motivate others to work to the best of their ability with what they have. He is a high school counselor and expects the same of his students. Accountability is a huge factor for him. He quotes, "there are plenty of days I don't want to run but there's never a day I wish I hadn't." Addiction can be a struggle and a hard thing to overcome, especially without any help. Mike Furino struggled with addiction for 20 years. Like many people, he went down the wrong path, got with the wrong crowd, and found himself smoking marijuana at 13 years old. Mike then moved on to selling marijuana and cocaine and eventually got expelled from every high school in Duvall County, Florida. He moved out of his parents house when he was 17 and ironically was able to afford a house in same neighborhood as his parents. Mike then started doing crystal meth and taking pills (Xanax) to help him sleep. Once he reached his early 20's he transitioned into drinking hard alcohol and "leveled himself out" with cocaine. As I learned in this podcast, every addict hits rock bottom at some point but Mike's first rock bottom wasn't enough. Now a functioning alcoholic working a really good paying job, Mike was still drinking himself into oblivion every day. He ultimately wrecked a food truck, found himself jobless and at rock, rock bottom. 4.5 years sober he is now turning passion into purpose. Mike got sober without any help or 12 step program. He believes many people who are struggling just need someone to believe in them. Mike has made it a priority to give back to others by helping anyone struggling with addiction. He encourages anyone who may be suffering from an addiction to reach out to him. Oak City Cannabis owner Tim McChesney is one of the few farmers participating in the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. Tim has a small, 3 acre farm of about 2,000 plants. His farm focuses more on a high quality plant resulting in high quality CBD products. In this episode we discuss: Hemp: Plants, Seeds, Strains, and Content Farm Life: Growing Hemp, NC Pilot Program CBD: Benefits and Uses CBD Products: Flower, Oil, Edibles, and Topicals. Industrial hemp is the same species as marijuana (Cannabis sativa) but the two crops are distinguishable by their tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects. Hemp is limited to 0.2% to 0.3% THC. THC levels in marijuana are generally 3%-15%. The least processed form of the cannabis plant, known as hemp, contains most of the CBD used medicinally. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has medical benefits, including pain relief. Mitch McConnell (R) introduced Farm Bill 2018 on April 12, 2018, which could fully legalize industrial hemp. The Hemp Farming Act is a proposed law to remove hemp from Schedule I controlled substances list and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. Now, after four years of research Congress is expected in September to make the crop legal for Americans to grow for the first time in nearly 50 years. In this conversation with long time Montessorian, Patty Barshay, we explore Montessori Philosophy and Methodology. We breakdown each topic into Approach, Classroom, and Age Planes. Montessori schools are exceptionally successful, so why aren't there more of them? Patty thinks it might be due to a lack of teacher training centers. Nutrition can be powerful and life changing. At 13 years old Ola Van Zyl put herself on a diet. Ola compared herself to photos in magazines and wanted to be skinny like the women she saw. This pressure to look a certain way led to control over her eating and soon she went from being a vegetarian to reducing her food groups and the amount of food she ate until she found herself weighing 81.5 pounds (37 kilograms) as a 5'4" (1.65 meters) young woman in her 20's. Ola suffered from anorexia for 15 years until she overcame the disease but she still left with symptoms. Physically she was better but mentally she still suffered. She was eating food but wasn't eating the right foods. This resulted in Ola feeling depressed, anxious, and moody, and feeling thus, she isolated herself from friends and family. One day she realized: Everyone else was happy and she wanted to be happy too. This epiphany inspired her to study nutrition and make some life changing habits that would ultimately transform her into a totally different person. Now she eats clean, exercises, and weighs a healthy and beautiful 125 pounds (57 kilograms). Ola offers consultations through her website: www.positivevitalitynutrition.com. "The ocean is never protected, it's always being protected." -Surfrider Foundation Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter former Chair and current Board Member, Ethan Crouch, joins us to talk about making effective change in your community. We also discuss taking care of our oceans, climate change, and reducing our plastics footprint. Being environmentally conscious has been a part of Ethan's whole life. Ethan grew up gardening, spent time in the woods, and enjoyed sailing and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Ethan also enjoys surfing and fishing on the Cape Fear Coast and feels fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful waterways (a yacht basin, a river, and the ocean). This appreciation for nature is the driving force for him to be a good steward of our natural environment. Once he found out there was a grass roots organization working hard to help protect the things on this earth he loves so much he knew he had to get involved. Ethan joined Surfrider Foundation in 2004 during undergraduate studies and has been volunteering non-stop with them ever since. In addition to environmental topics we also discuss how you can make a difference in your local community. Whether it's donating volunteer hours or giving monetary support, volunteers make an important difference in this world. Volunteering can make you feel good, increase your employment prospects, meet like minded people, and build a sense of community. To find your perfect fit, check out organizations like https://www.volunteermatch.org or do a quick Google search for local organizations in need. Wake N Bake donuts and coffee owner, Danny Tangredi, always had a knack for making sweet stuff from a young age. From making pies and jams to entering them in the county fair; he always knew he wanted his own business. Things got real cloudy in college and one hazy day the idea for Wake N Bake donuts was born. With no prior donut making experience and sitting on the idea for more than 10 years, Danny Tangredi finally made the leap of faith to follow his dream and open a unique donut shop. Wake N Bake is popular for their "limited edition" controversial donuts: Snoop Dogg blunt, Tide Pod donut, Election donut, School Shooting donut, 420 donut, Avett Brothers banjo, Ludacris booty, and the Willie Nelson joint. Wake N Bake recently won the Cooking Channel's Donut Showdown, "Wake Up Call", grand prize of $10,000 and they have been named "Best Donuts in North Carolina" by Buzzfeed. They have also teamed up with a local brewery to create a Wake N Bake Stout and a local burger shop to create a donut burger. I think it's safe to say these donuts get a lot of (well deserved) attention. There's also some talk of franchising and adding more locations so be on the lookout for a Wake N Bake location coming near you. @wakenbake, https://www.instagram.com/wakenbakedonuts/
