Send us a textIn this episode we talk with Tara Dower about:Nutrition before, during and post FKTs vs UltramarathonsHow working with a nutritionist can take the guesswork out of race prepTara Dower is a professional ultrarunner, who you probably also know for crushing the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail in late 2024. Next up for Tara in 2025 is the iconic Western States 100 as a result of her Golden Ticket 2nd place performance at Black Canyon 100k. Tara also recently signed a record-breaking deal with Altra, a stunning example of her incredible rise in the sport. Tara has an incredible list of results and accolades, and says her favorite distance to tackle is the 100 miler, because it presents so many possibilities for adventure, but she's no stranger to setting FKTs, with records on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, Benton MacKaye Trail and the Colorado Trail. If you've spent the summer working yourself into peak hiking shape, there are some great trails to test your endurance, not in the mountains but by the beach. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we get into five long-distance hikes on the Oregon coast, climbing the steep cliffs and headlands, past rocky tide pools and down onto the sand. Utilizing the long, snaking trail systems at some of the best parks on the coast, hikers can find places to hike for 12 miles, 15 miles, 20 miles or even longer. What the coast lacks in sheer elevation, it makes up for in distance, with so much of the Pacific coastline taken up by public lands. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Cape Lookout's three trails can be connected for one long hike. The Fort to Sea Trail is a classic adventure on the north coast. Why Yachats is home to some of the best long-distance hiking on the coast. Ecola and Oswald West state parks have some seriously long trail networks. In this special episode of Tee'd Off, Ben and Aaron sit down with long time Myrtle Beach Golf veteran and new President of Volvik USA, Pete Kinney! Pete started his career in Myrtle Beach in 1990 as the Assistant Professional at Waterway Hills, a former popular course located on Restaurant Row. Known for it's signature gondola ride across the Intracoastal Waterway to and from the course, Pete said that manning the gondola once a week was the greatest bag boy position in town! To fuel his love for the game and to make ends meet, Pete also worked at a mini-golf course in the evenings, and even provided the famous 49 cent grip changes at Golf Dimensions! After stops at Sea Trail and Tidewater golf clubs, Pete scored his first Head Professional job at Beachwood Golf Club in 1996. During this time, Pete was involved in the inception of the Tee Time Network in the Myrtle Beach area, which was one of the first network-based tee times systems in the country! Over the next 20 years, Pete shifted into the corporate realm of the golf industry, gaining a wealth of experience in the apparel and equipment sectors with senior sales positions at major brands including TaylorMade, Slazenger, Cleveland, Bridgestone, Golf Galaxy, and Ralph Lauren. During his time with these brands, Pete became obsessed with the development and innovations of the golf ball. In 2023, Pete interviewed for a senior sales position with Volvik. His knowledge for the industry, golf ball manufacturing, and the genuine grass roots tales of his career were more than impactful, and Pete accepted the position of President of Volvik USA in August of 2023! With an impressive list of accomplishments spanning 4 decades, Pete coined this amazing opportunity with Volvik as his, "last job," but that in no way defines the ferocity and pace at which he has taken to bring a resurgence to the brand. With 13 balls in their lineup, and nearly a dozen special edition balls, Volvik is bringing the word FUN to performance on the links! Pete showed the Tee'd Off crew their new Deadpool gift set to be released with the much-anticipated 3rd film, and he also dropped a bombshell on a new partnership with Disney! With vastly popular franchises such as Cars, Monsters Inc., and Toy Story, be on the lookout for some special edition Volvik balls showcasing your favorite Disney Character. Ben and Aaron hoped that Star Wars balls would soon be available, and Pete intimated that a deal with Lucas Films is not out of the question. How cool would a Darth Vader ball be?! In addition to providing fun, Volvik is looking to tee it up for a cause; their Vista3 Pink 360 BCRF ball gives $1 to each dozen sold for the Breast Cancer Research Fund, a initiative that not only seeks for a cure, but for ways to reduce recurrence of cancer in survivors. Pete and Volvik are off to a wonderful start reshaping the Volvik brand and we cannot wait to see what's next!Being a person of authority in the golf ball sector, we could not help but ask for Pete's feedback on the golf ball rollback. From the perspective of a PGA Member and Volvik President, Pete is against the rollback, but promises that Volvik will push the envelope of what is possible and maximum the performance of their balls, regardless of any restrictions. In a very special segment of Tee'd Off, Pete shared hilarious stories about Gary McCord, David Feherty, and Tiger Woods! You will have to tune in to hear these amazing stories! The package of the episode is the Myrtle Beach Golf Trail Replay Package, where you can get great prebooked replay discounts on nearly 30 of the top courses in Myrtle Beach! The accommodations of the episode is the Blue Water Keyes in North Myrtle Beach. This oceanfront resort offers some of the most luxurious 2, 3, and 4 bedroom condos in the area, with large floorplans and great bedding options for your next Myrtle Beach golf trip!

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - More than 130 people gathered in the Village Commons to celebrate the opening of the new Rainbow Ridge Trail System. As it was a hot summer's day, most of them clung to shade beneath trees, awnings and the main tent. Rose and Brenda Hanson, from the Klahoose First Nation, opened the ceremony. “This is a song you all are likely familiar with. It's very fittingly titled ‘The Welcome Song.' It was composed multiple years ago with my mom Rose, her sister my Auntie Helen and her other sister Auntie Marge. Little did we know, at that time, that this song would travel so far. I'm so grateful and honoured that it has been used with such high purpose since its creation and I'm very happy and pleased to be here to share it with you today,” said Brenda. She used the Salish names for the Klahoose Nation and their territory, adding their song is for ‘all the people that come from other places and other lands.' “The song expresses, we are so very grateful in our hearts that you have come. Welcome, welcome to these lands.” Sandra Wood, Executive Director of the Cortes Housing Society, cut the ribbon opening the trails. “We're very excited to share with the community the Rainbow Ridge connections to our neighbouring properties. That's going to make it possible for people to walk between the Seniors Village, the Health Centre and the school towards Manson's Hall via the Rainbow Ridge property and the Village Commons property. It's a new trail system that's connecting from east to west, a number of nonprofit properties in the Manson's corridor. We've also made improvements on the north-south connection of Rainbow Ridge so that it better connects with the Siskin Forest Trail system. We've moved part of the trail to higher ground on Rainbow Ridge so that it will be a drier trail through the winter months,” she explained. “These trails are part of a bigger vision of having active transportation and a network of trails where people can walk and bicycle. It's part of climate change adaptation to use your vehicle less. It's part of getting out and exercising and being in nature, and it's part of just being in community and bumping into your neighbour on the trails. We had a lot of reasons to develop this trail network on Rainbow Ridge. Someday there's going to be 24 families who live in the rental town homes that we plan to build on Rainbow Ridge, but these public trails are something that will be there for everyone in the community, as well as visitors to Cortes.” “I think it's an important part of keeping the Rainbow Ridge property in community hands and enjoyed by the public. I also think it's part of another bigger strategy where there's a lot of key properties now owned by the Cortes Island Senior Society, the Southern Community Association which owns Manson's Hall, the Cortes Island Community Foundation and the Cortes Community Economic Development Association (CCEDA), who own the Village Commons, as well as the Housing Society that own the Rainbow Ridge property. We've got all this fantastic community land in community hands, and I think these trails are really helping us to connect all of those parcels together to make these corridors possible and connecting to the wider park system like the Siskin Trail network and even the School to Sea Trail system that will take people to Manson's dock and Manson's Lagoon. You'll be able to go all the way from that northernmost part of Manson's by trail as far south as Smelt Bay Provincial Park. It's a really important way to connect our community. I really wanted to make that a part of this project.”

The Peace of Wild Things When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. by Wendell Berry It is appropriate to start this episode description with a poem from Wendell Berry. I love this poem. I can hear the quiet sounds of the outside just reading it. And I was introduced to this poem and to Wendell Berry by Daniel Alexander. Daniel is my guest this week, and you will find out that he is a bit of a poet himself. I really enjoyed this conversation because I got to catch up with an old friend, but also hear about what it is about an outdoor space that opens his soul. This is a different kind of adventure conversation, I know you'll be inspired. We explore many different angles of the human experience and what we are all made for. One great take away I got from Daniel is that Comfort + Comparison = a Crushing of our souls. And the flip side of that same coin is that if we embrace the suffering in our lives, it can lead us to a place where our souls truly come alive. It's an inverse universe. Be sure to listen to the end for his book recommendations. Daniel has always been spot on when it comes to a good read, and these are now on my reading list. And if you want to join Daniel for any part of his Mountain to Sea Trail adventure, you can reach him at danielhalexander@gmail.com or on Twitter at @dalexander_1.
Lee, trail name Boots, shares information about his annual Hike for Healing. This year the hike will be on June 19th on Segment 1 of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Listen in to learn how you can bring awareness to this issue and be an ally by supporting the hike. "Hike for Healing is an annual hike promoting ongoing awareness to strive towards healing of divisions. Why? Because humanity is imperfect. Racism, inequity, cultural insensitivities, social injustices, and even subtle prejudices are quite real and unfortunately play a role in everyday life. These are not political problems, these are human problems." - Bootsonthetrail.comConnect with Boots:bootsonthetrail.comAll the social links and news can be found at https://linktr.ee/bootsonthetrailInstagram: @bootsonthetrailYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx3N7038qJrQF9tVztx7xGwSupport the showConnect with Hike:Instagram: @thehikepodcastTwitter: @thehikepodcastFacebook: @thehikepodcastEmail: hikepodcast@gmail.com

While you might think this episode is about completing an ultramarathon event, it's really about family and friends showing up in our lives to provide for us when we need them most. Enjoy all the highs and lows of the story and I hope it encourages you to tackle your next big goal with friends!
In this episode, Courtney talks with Lee “Boots” Fortune. They discuss the efforts Lee is making to help spread the message that the outdoors is for everyone, his controversial snack choice and they answer the question - What is Hike for Healing? About Lee: “My name is Lee but on the trail, on YouTube, socials, and even at work I am known as Boots (a name I came by honest). I have also been called a LAD (as opposed to LASH) as I routinely hike longer dayhikes (20+ miles). Last year along with my often times hiking partner, Steps, held our first Hike for Healing event in which we successfully completed the Tour de LeConte hiking over 45 miles in less than 24 hours. Through ongoing conversation, lots more interest, and vastly increased participation, we are having a Hike for Healing 2023 in which we will attempt to complete segment 1 of the Mountains to Sea Trail in less than 24 hours. I love my family, I love the outdoors, creating Youtube content, and I love hiking and exploring. I am also a musician of many years (what I actually went to school for), and, as a personal non hiking hobby enjoy making and playing cigar box guitars. :)” Follow Lee: https://www.bootsonthetrail.com/ https://www.instagram.com/bootsonthetrail/ https://www.facebook.com/BootsontheTrail https://www.youtube.com/@BootsontheTrail Remember, I'd love to hear from you on any topic that comes up in the show or if you know someone that would be a great guest for the show. Traveling to the coast this spring, but tired of the same attractions? We have you covered. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we're headed back to the north Oregon coast to explore some overlooked attractions, just in time for spring break. There's nothing wrong with Cannon Beach and the Tillamook Creamery, but have you seen the spectacular beauty of Niagara Falls? Stood beneath the Rockaway Big Tree? Spied upon elk at Jewell Meadows? If you're itching to try something new, you've come to the right place. There's a lot more to see on the north coast than rocks shaped like haystacks. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Oregon's Coast Range is full of spectacular waterfalls. Where to find the coast's biggest trees (and stumps) The Fort to Sea Trail is one of the best day hikes on the Oregon coast. Spring break may be your last best chance to see elk at Jewell Meadows. One state park offers three different environments to explore. I've got another outstanding up and comer on this week's show. Tara Dower aka Candy Mama has been thru-hiking some of the bigger trails for years now, including the AT as well as the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Eventually that led to some FKT's and now she's transitioning into ultramarathons. With a big win at Blood Rock 100 this year, second to the man himself, Jeff Browning, she has officially put her stamp on the world of trail running. This week on the Peak Northwest podcast, we discuss the Corvallis-to-the-Sea Trail. Running about 60 miles from downtown Corvallis to Ona Beach south of Newport, the long-distance hiking and mountain biking trail crosses through a dense Coast Range forest, using old logging roads and newly cut trails. Like the neighboring Oregon Coast Trail, some sections of the hike require walking along the shoulders of open roads. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tara Dower has covered a lot of ground in her life – literally. This young athlete is a hiking adventurer, who spends more time rucking across mountain trails than most of us would walk during our lives. In this episode, Tara and Rob share stories of their experiences on some of the most well-known hiking spots in North Carolina and across the country. Tara currently has the fastest known recorded time on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina. If you've never heard of it, “The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a simple footpath stretching almost 1,200 miles across North Carolina from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey's Ridge on the Outer Banks” (https://mountainstoseatrail.org/the-trail/). For a little added emphasis, this trail goes ALLLLLLL the way from the western part of the NC mountains… to the ocean… hence, “mountains to sea.” Ok, so now you understand that it takes some serious grit to accomplish something like that - and she crushed it! Tara averaged 40.1 miles per day for 30 days and, as I'm sure you guessed, it was not easy. Tara shares some of her own personal struggles and how she deals with challenges during her hikes. From anxiety on the flats to breaking bread and drinking beers in lawn chairs with strangers, this young explorer has had some memorable experiences. Just as in life, there are peaks and valleys, and we learn what we are made of when we are challenged. A highlight from this conversation is when Tara describes the difficulty she has when returning to “society” after being on the trail for so long. The simplistic nature of taking only what you need and utilizing what is in your environment tends to highlight the surplus of “unnecessary things” that so many of us are accustomed to in our daily lives. Tara explains that simplification is beautiful and being in nature helps a person embrace the important things in life- friendships, experiences, love, food, and water. We can learn a lot from this young adventurer so listen up and start planning that BIG dream that scares you right NOW! No time to waste. Happy exploring!!! Lisa Speas or "Conundrum" has been long-distance backpacking for many years traversing a variety of trails, the longest of which being the Appalachian Trail. Her AT journey was anything but typical and even included flatlining in the emergency room. Lisa and Ryan discuss her journey on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, and the Great Allegheny Passage. She also shares her experience and advice for women hikers over 50 and how her backpacking style has evolved over the years. Katie Westling is out of the Shennies at last!! The knee continues to improve, and she is past the Roller coaster. All in all, a week of success, including her picture at the ATC in Harpers Ferry. This week we look at the world of FKTs, or Fastest Known Times, which saw record activity in 2020 (and 2021 promises to see even more). We listen in on a conversation with the holders of three FKTs set in 2020, one for the entire 1,175-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and two — male and female — for the Pitchell run, from Mount Pisgah to Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, a stretch of trail that gains 11,400 vertical feet in 62 miles! The conversation comes courtesy of our friends at the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail; the discussion with Tara Dower, Tory Grieves and Kyle Curtin, moderated by Chuck Millsaps with Great Outdoor Provision Co., was a panel discussion as part of this year's annual Gathering of Friends, referred to this year as the Ungathering, since it was conducted over Zoom. On this episode of Smoky Mountain Air, we look back at an interview we recorded a few months ago with David Brill, author of the book Into the Mist, a collection of real-life stories depicting people caught in extreme situations in the Smokies and their dramatic struggles for survival. Into the Mist is published by GSMA and available at SmokiesInformation.org. Brill has also written four other books: As Far as the Eye Can See: Reflections of an Appalachian Trail Thru Hiker (UT Press–Appalachian Trail Conservancy); A Separate Place: A Father's Reflection on Building a Home and Renewing a Family (Plume); Desire and Ice: Searching for Perspective atop Denali (National Geographic Adventure Press); and Cumberland Odyssey: A Journey in Pictures and Words along Tennessee's Cumberland Trail and Plateau (Mountain Trail Press). In addition to his books, Brill's articles on science, ecology, the environment, business, health, fitness, parenting, and adventure-travel have appeared in more than 25 national and regional magazines, including National Geographic Traveler and Men's Health. He is a regular contributor to GSMA's own Smokies Life magazine. During our conversation, Brill shared excerpts from several of his works and reflected on how he came to be a writer after hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. We spoke to David Brill on an online video chat while he was at home in the Cumberland Mountains of East Tennessee.Several of David Brill's Smokies Life articles can be found online in our missing issues, including an account of his grueling, 27-mile, overnight hike on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which he reminisced about during our conversation. That story can be found in Smokies Life Volume 4, issue 1, one of the out-of-print issues online at SmokiesInformation.org/MissingIssues. Other issues of Smokies Life and the book Into the Mist are available at SmokiesInformation.org, where you can shop the Smokies and support GSMA and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This week we talk with Tara Dower, which is her God given name, but her trail name is Candy Mama. She procured the nickname during her thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2019. 7 years prior, after watching an Appalachian Trail documentary in her dorm room at East Carolina University she became focused on living a full and adventurous lifestyle. At 27, she worked in the outdoor industry since graduating and is always searching for her next active pursuit. As a competitive runner and avid hiker the Mountains to Sea Trail seemed perfect for her to explore completing as a Fastest Known Time. 29 days 8 hours and 48 minutes was what it took for her to complete all 1175 miles in the month of September 2020. Welcome back to Season 1 of The Guidebook! I'm your host Rachel. This here episode 4 features Anne “Scrappy” Baker (@ennakrek). + Anne has hiked the Wind River Travers, the Teton Crest Trail, the Sheltowee Trace Trail, parts of the Appalachian Trail and Mountains to Sea Trail, and completed the PCT in sections. She’s a PhD candidate too! + Anne wrote an article for The Trek called “Post Trail Depression: It’s Not What You Think” in 2019 and I immediately reached out to her to talk. I was so curious about her research because at the time I had just launched my Post Trail Depression survey and decided to write a book about Post Trail Depression (it’s still in the works). + This interview is more than just a talk about post trail depression – well actually post trail grief. We also discussed reconciling the person you are on trail with the person you are at home, the thruhiking community, working toward her PhD, and working in the US mental healthcare system. + Anne is incredibly smart, so relatable, and a great gear reviewer (check her out on the Trek!). I hope you’ll be able to relate to this episode and maybe put some thought into your feelings about your thruhike and yourself. + Please please subscribe and give us a quick review! Our State Magazine’s Jeremy Markovich joined the Runologie crew to discuss the upcoming season of “Away Message”, where his podcast will focus on North Carolina’s Mountain to Sea Trail. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
While we normally focus on Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, Kimberly Brookshire's story was too good to miss. She had spent the early part of her career in fashion and wanted to experience something completely out of her comfort zone. Eschewing the Appalachian and other long-distance trails, Kimberly went for the lesser-known Mountains To Sea Trail. This proved to be the perfect segue between her previous life and a new one that she discovered. But Kimberly's story didn't end when she reached the end of the trail in the Outer Banks. She was enjoying the life that she was leading and appreciated the person she had become through her adventure. So she did it again, eventually completing a yoyo of the trail, becoming only the third person and the first woman to do so. Visitjohnstoncountync.organd get to know JoCo! It is easy to remember, just take exit 95 off I-95. Don’t pass it by! TIPS FOR VISITING JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC Johnston County is a great place to visit even if it's just for a weekend or a stop on your road trip down to Florida. You can hang out and explore some festivals or go berry picking in the spring and visit pumpkin patches in the fall. Though you won't find any festivals in the winter and summer because they tend to be either too hot of too cold, there are plenty of other things to explore. If you visit the johnstoncountync.orgwebsite you can find out everything that is going on. There is a calendar of events for the entire county and a very active blog that keeps current information posted. Even though there are not any festivals during the summer and winter, there are still a ton of places to stop along the route of Interstate 95 through Johnston County. One highlight is the Tobacco Farm Life Museum, which is right at the beginning edge of the county when you are driving down from New York or New Jersey. This museum is open all year long with live demonstrations and hands on experiences your kids will love; especially after sitting in a car for hours. If you are interested in shopping and antiquing, then you should think about stopping in Selma and grabbing an orangeade to quench your thirst during your shopping spree. Going further south into Benson, NC there is a great gluten-free bakery to grab a snack. If you are bringing a dog with you on your road trip, Benson is also a great place to stop since they have an off-leash dog park! If you can’t stop for a day or two, you should think about at least stopping for a meal and get away from the fast food you find on the highway. Just by driving a little way off the highway you can grab a great meal that will only cost a little bit more than that fast food you were going to get and is so much better! Just a five minute drive off the highway you can hit Smithfield and grab some food at Simple Twist, which is a farm-to-table restaurant that is laid back and serves some great light dishes. SoDoSoPais another restaurant to try which serves a twist on southern cuisine. Beer Wine Shine Trailis really fun experience and a great way to try some local brews, wines and moonshine made in a local distillery. Of course this is more for the adults on your trip! If you like exploring the outdoors with your kids, you can check out some great hiking trails that even some of the locals don’t know about! You can learn more about the hiking trails and other outdoor adventures at Mountains to Sea Trail. If you are traveling with pets make sure to check out the Hampton Innin Benson which is new, pet-friendly, and located right across the way from the dog park. If you are looking to stay somewhere more untraditional, you should stay at the Morning Glory Innin Clayton. With its location you can walk almost anywhere in Clayton and spend your nights in a beautifully restored historic home. If you plan on spending a little more time in Johnston County you should think about visiting the Bentonville Battlefield. This area is also known for playing a big role in the Civil War . The battlefield is out in the middle of nowhere but not too hard to find and is a great learning experience. If you go in March that is when they do their reenactment of the battle. If you have any interest at all in early Hollywood or even the Royals you should check out the Ava Gardner Museum. The facts you learn about Ava Gardner will blow you away. If you are going to spend any time in Clayton you should make sure to check out the Sculpture trail which is amazing to go and see plus every year they feature a different artist so you can keep going back and see something new. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO When visiting Johnston County there are a lot of places to take a family photo. Diane’s Wild Idea: To run great distances and do what she loves while raising awareness about epilepsy and other great causes. Running 100 miles is remarkable. Running and winning 100+ mile races as a 58-year old who-has had part of their brain removed is a different level. Diane was a professional tennis player before she had epilepsy, but when she started having seizures, running helped stave them off. Ten years into her disease, she decided to have a risky, radical surgery where doctors removed a part of her brain. Once she healed, she started running, this time much longer distances than ever before. While the epilepsy went away, Diane lost some things with the surgery. Today, she struggles with her sense of time, and she has a hard time with her sense of direction, both integral to long distance trail running. Running, however has become is her ultimate medicine, and she’s set some incredible records on her journey. She won the infamous Yukon Arctic Ultra, a 430-mile footrace pulling a 50-pound sled through temperatures below 50 degrees for eight days. She climbed South America’s tallest peak. She completed the worlds’ hardest 100-mile race, running for 45 hours straight. She also ran and set record for the 1,000-mile Mountains to Sea Trail, where she traversed the state of North Carolina in just over 22 days for a cause. In addition to being an athletic force, Diane is a long-time athlete for The North Face. She is also a speaker at events like REI’s Outessa series, which is how I found out about her amazing journey. I love how endlessly positive she is, and how she relates to everyone on and off the trail. Diane is a true survivor, an amazing performer, and she has a wonderful perspective on reaching your own potential. Listen to this episode if: You’ve ever wanted to run an ultramarathon or a long-distance trail race. You or someone you know suffers from epilepsy. You’re not one to let health issues keep you from the outdoors. You want to reach your full potential. You are curious what it’d be like to miss your sense of time and direction.
