Miles Adams and Max Lemper-Tabatsky of Loyal Share Their Story of Starting a Company in the Death Care Industry

This is a great story for neophyte entrepreneurs. If you are fearful of striking out on your own, or if you believe there are no new niches to develop in the current marketplace, think again. These motivated co-founders will explain how hard work, a strong sense of responsibility and a passion for creating an outstanding customer service environment can take a committed young entrepreneur a long way. First, let's introduce Miles Adams. Miles received his undergraduate education at George Washington University with majors in Economics and History. He followed up with an MA in International Relations at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). His first jobs in banking and consulting left him unfulfilled and uninspired, so he began the hunt for something that would excite him. He thought he might be interested in becoming involved with a startup, thus he began to research. He ended up networking with a couple of British entrepreneurs who offered him a position with their startup cremation business, Tulip Cremation. Miles became their operations manager with no previous experience, but with an abundance of enthusiasm. He was impressed by Tulip's commitment to customer service as well as their desire to restructure pricing and to challenge similar but outmoded business models. The company was eventually bought, and Miles moved on to create his own cremation business. He had absorbed a great deal and was confident he was now ready to begin a startup of his own. Max Lemper-Tabatsky started out consulting after he finished school at Connecticut College where he majored in Economics and Sociology. He met Miles when they were consultants for the same company. Max, too, felt that consulting work was underwhelming. And while Miles moved on to the cremation startup, Max thought he wanted to travel for a while and explore other possible opportunities. He was looking for something that offered more mobility, and would draw on his creativity and need for independence. He wanted work that would lend itself to personal growth. He left his steady job for those purposes, but then Covid-19 hit. His immediate travel plans needed to change. He got in touch with Max and well, as you'll hear, the rest is very recent history. Together Miles and Max, with their company Loyal, have reimagined a business that many don't like to think about. It is also one that up until lately, has not changed much in many years. As Max says, “It isn't sexy.” But with fresh eyes, some newly acquired experience and knowledge of modern technology, Miles and Max have created a new niche in an old industry. With the unfortunate onset of the pandemic, they are now truly utilizing their skills to help many families deal with the end of life process for a loved one. They both pivoted early on in their careers into jobs they now find fulfilling and challenging. Listen to them describe how their business has caused them to stretch, grow and learn. You will be energized by their enthusiasm and sincerity. Listen to this success story and you might come to believe there's a place for you too somewhere in today's new e-commerce world.   Topics in this episode: Why making mistakes early can be a good thing How to choose a business partner for the right reasons How mindfulness can help your business The importance of synergy in working relationships and with customers How e-commerce can revitalize old industries when you think outside the box What does it take to move out of your safety zone? Mark’s great friend, Democrat Congressman Max Rose, joins him on the podcast today. Max is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the London School of Economics, who has served as an active duty officer in Afghanistan from 2012-2013 and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Max is Ranger-qualified, continues to serve in the National Guard, and is the first post-9/11 combat veteran to represent New York City. The passage he has chosen to discuss with Mark is Exodus 32:4, the passage which he has decided will be his son’s Bar Mitzvah portion 13 years from now. Max begins today’s discussion by sharing his summary of the passage and how it provides an example of speaking truth to power, and then he and Mark offer differing perspectives on Aaron’s leadership within it. They follow with an in depth investigation into the nature of leadership both in the passage and in the world today, particularly in relation to Max’s work with the military and in politics, and they review the moral obligation we all have to question authority as Moses did. The conversation finishes with Max sharing the lessons he has learned about mankind. Today’s episode exemplifies the beauty of the Torah in its openness to interpretation as well as its timeless guidance. As Max states, everyone has an opportunity to lead at some point in their lives, and today’s passage and resulting analysis offer listeners valuable perspective to consider when their opportunity arrives. Episode Highlights: Max’s summary of the passage Speaking truth to power Differing perspectives on Aaron’s leadership The hardest thing to do in leadership The moral obligation to question authority Strong leadership in times of failure The lessons which Max has learned about mankind Quotes: “Moses subsequently speaks truth to power…pushes back upon God using God’s own words.” “One could also argue he bought some time.” “We don’t teach leadership enough to young people.” “Who among us knows what we would do if we were in Aaron’s position?” “It is confidence in God. It is confidence that God will not put ego first, will not put arrogance first, but that God will put His own sense of moral clarity, moral consistency, and rightness first.” “Moses always defends his people externally, and criticizes them internally.” “He leads his leader.” “We have far too much arrogance in our society today.” Exodus 32:4 This he took from them and cast in a mold, and made it into a molten calf. And they exclaimed, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” https://www.sefaria.org/Exodus.32.4 Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en

K.B. Wagers is the author of A PALE LIGHT IN THE BLACK (HarperVoyager). It’s a good vibes military space opera that follows the Near Earth Orbital Guard, essentially a spacefaring Coast Guard protecting humanity within our solar system. The Neo-G crew of the Interceptor ship Zuma’s Ghost prepares for the annual Boarding Games — a multi-military competition which carries huge prestige, bragging rights, and useful inter-branch clout. But this tight-knit found family faces destabilization as their lieutenant commander is promoted off the ship, replaced with Maxine Carmichael, a capable but awkward young woman whose family name carries a great deal of influence and baggage. As Max works to gel with the team’s volatile mechanic and conflicted captain, their Neo-G missions uncover a strange pattern of interconnected mysteries — worried smugglers who die suspiciously in military custody, colony ships lost for generations turning up without their suspended animation crews, and corporate intrigues that might just haunt Max’s own family’s company. A PALE LIGHT IN THE BLACK is diverse and accessible science fiction that arrives March 3rd from Harper Voyager books.

This brand experience is a result of one of the following things- or maybe a combination of several of these.  The right attitude and behaviors within the employee- Amanda is just like this. It’s who she is and what makes her tick. Whether the bank intended to hire her on purpose to capture this behavior is unlikely However her attitude and behaviors are what opened the opportunity to have the job. The right training to show her how she can help- Someone connected the dots and said “if you see this; Then this is what you should do” The right leadership to allow her to make this call. She’s a teller at a bank AND she’s able to make account decisions without someone approving. TRUST The right customer- I have more than one account and I’ve been loyal to the bank, They’ve financed two cars, They’ve given me seed money to start Done Desk, I have money in the bank, I pay my bills. I am the right customer to receive this extra attention. When Amanda Executed: The Brand Was Elevated I’m not just ‘satisfied’, I’m thrilled I directly benefitted from her engagement in her job I trust her because she cares I become more loyal- and make a podcast about the experience. This is why we created High Trust Practice, So let’s look at applying this to your practice. Right now. A few questions and a few ideas. Do you have the right people who are interested in supporting your brand? As Max says “do they get it, want it, and can do it’? Have you trained them on what it means to provide quality care, your expectations of them, and connect the dots for them in their work. Are you honing your skills as a leader, setting the right expectations, hiring the right people, and shedding people that don’t fit? Are you hearing your patients, addressing their needs, teaching them about a relationship with you, and do your people put the patient’s first?

We couldn’t be more pleased to start off these inspiring and thought-provoking discussions with none other than the beloved pastor and speaker Max Lucado. For decades, Max has been leading us with warmth and good humor, gently asking us to think about who we are in the world as people of faith and what we’re striving to represent, especially in these divisive times. Max and Jen talk about some of the biggest issues on our minds—namely, what unity can look like among different groups who disagree with one another among believers and non-believers alike. Max implores us to work together to communicate, to love one another, and to model this for others. As Max says, “We can be respectful. We do not have the right to be arrogant and to point a finger. Of all the people who should not be arrogant it is those of us who believe we are saved by grace.”

Every person has important gifts that need to be shared with others and the church, but many families face real challenges with finding acceptance and a place to serve. Today on the podcast, Crystal is sharing a powerful message of hope from Emily Colson, daughter of the late Chuck Colson and mother to Max, her adult son who has a diagnosis of autism. Emily’s perfect world turned upside down following a painful divorce when Max was just a baby. As Max grew, challenges with autism became increasingly difficult for Emily…she was able to go out less and less and eventually even stopped going to church altogether. Emily never imagined that she’d be so disconnected from the spiritual life of the church because of Max’s diagnosis. But God used the words of Joni Eareckson Tada to encourage Emily’s heart: “Your church would be so blessed to have people with autism running up and down the aisles.” Emily took those words to heart and decided to find a way for her family to cross the threshold of the church. Anna drags Max out to the edge of the desert where they find Slake and the other Waiting Ones looking out at the endless expanse of sand.

Global Dispatches -- World News That Matters

Max Boot is a foreign policy commentator and historian. Just this week he was named a contributing writer to the Op-ed page of the Washington Post. He is the author of several books;  his most recent is The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam  Lansdale was a CIA officer who was the inspiration behind the title character of the famous Graham Green novel, The Quiet American. As Max explains Lansdale pioneered a "hearts and minds" approach to the Vietnam quandary and sought to avoid a massive American military buildup in Vietnam, but was ultimately overruled.  We discuss this history in detail and also the relevance of Lansdale to American foreign policy today. We then have an extended conversation about Max's background, including his own intellectual evolution. And here, Max explains how the Trump administration is causing him to re-think certain assumptions he once held as a movement conservative and Republican.

Instrument Pilot IFR Tips – Using GPS on a VOR or ILS approach, Foreflight + GA News

Aviation News Talk podcast

Last week we talked about briefing the approach and said one of the first things you should do is check to see whether GPS is in the title of the approach. For example, you might look to see whether the title is just VOR 21 approach or if it’s VOR 21 OR GPS. If it’s the latter, it’s obvious you can use GPS in lieu of a VOR signal for the entire approach. But what’s less clear is when you can use GPS for a portion of the approach if it says just VOR 21 and doesn’t have GPS in the title of the approach. Although GPS receivers have been around for over 20 years, pilots are still unclear as to when they can use GPS on non-GPS approaches such as ILS and VOR approaches. As Max explains, the rules are different for VOR and ILS approaches. The regulatory basis can be found in FAA Advisory Circular AC 90-108, dated March 3, 2011, and in the AIM, the Aeronautical Information Manual, in section 1-2-3, sub-paragraphs c4 and c-5, updated May 26, 2016. These tell us that for a VOR or NDB approach, you can now use GPS for the entire approach, even if GPS is not listed in the title of the approach. So in our example, if the title of the approach is VOR 21, and GPS is not in the title, you can still now use GPS for the entire approach, but with one caveat. The VOR or NDB signal MUST be in service, and you MUST monitor that signal for the final approach course. But for an ILS or Localizer approach, as soon as you turn onto a localizer or ILS, you need to display course guidance from the Nav radio. On the Garmin 430/530, that means as soon as you turn onto the localizer, you must push the CDI button so VLOC is displayed. You can, if you wish, monitor RNAV (GPS) data as you fly along a localizer, but GPS cannot be used for primary guidance at any time while on a localizer. Five months into the podcast, the Priority team is starting over—or, at least, talking about starting over. Our hosts don't decide on a topic until after they start recording, and a wide-ranging discussion of fresh starts (and grocery store life hacks?) ensues. As Max points out, it's often the not-so-fresh-start, picking up the project anew each day, that gets us where we're going. Caitie agrees, and observes that so much of the magic of the fresh start is, in fact, sleight of hand. We create the illusion of change, or trick ourselves into making better choices. But whether you are after real change, or just need a momentary shot of inspiration, today's episode of Priority has something for everybody. Sometimes it seems that innovators and value-adders just can't win. They're dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. Fly too close to the sun and your wings melt. Fly too far away and you achieve nothing. As Max and Laurence discuss in the latest Naked Strategy, what entrepreneurs and risk-takers need to know is how close is too close, how far is far enough. They need to know where the line is and – if they're very lucky – develop some sort of sense as to when they're in danger of crossing it. Yet instead of celebrating those who try but fail to achieve everything they set out to achieve, society's army of second-guessers and armchair quarterbacks like nothing more than to criticise those who have tried to achieve something but failed. And then there are the politicians who spout the mantra of accountability when what they're really looking for is someone to blame. All of which makes up enough criticism and derision to make you wish you never tried to fly at all. So let's remember that there is a huge difference between someone who tries but fails to make something better and someone who is just doing a lousy job.
