Many of us would like to be more creative. Some would even aspire to make a living with their creativity. Yet without legendary role models like Melanie Gideon, it's hard to learn what it really takes. Melanie Gideon is willing to get real with us and go deep about her experience in making it happen. She is a New York Times bestselling fiction author of monster hits like Wife 22, The Slippery Year, The Valley of the Moon, and much more. Her new book, Did I Say You Can Go, is one of the most anticipated novels of 2021. In this episode of Follow Your Different, we dig into what it really takes to be a professional fiction writer and how Melanie works on her craft. If you care about creativity, I think you're going to fall in love with Melanie and what she has to share on the topic. Melanie Gideon on Tours The discussion starts off with a question about Melanie, and how she approaches book tours as an introvert. She shares that it can be quite an excruciating experience for her. She loves the writing aspect of her craft: from thinking of the story's design and structure to writing and even editing it afterwards. “I do (love editing) because you're streamlining the story. You are sometimes finding the story in the editing. And you're just making it tighter and creating what you want for your reader. What I want for my reader is to create a page turner where they just have to know what happens next, no matter what genre I'm writing in. That is what I endeavor to do. So I love that.” – Melanie Gideon Though Melanie says she's starting to like the publishing aspect more nowadays, since everything can be done online. Being able to do it from the comfort of your home, and engaging with fellow authors rather than just having a conversation with herself was a nice change of pace. Not only that, her family can attend her virtual book events now that everything is online, not to mention all her fans from different places. How to be Like Melanie A lot of people certainly would love to achieve their dreams like Melanie. I remember asking her once how she did it. Her response was: “I just didn't stop writing” – Melanie Gideon She thinks not giving up is a huge part of being successful. This applies to a lot of things in life, but for Melanie it is more so when it comes to writing. Plus, her urgency and passion for storytelling was always there to drive her forward. “You know, since I was eight years old, I read voraciously. I always just wanted to be in another world alongside the world I was living in. I was a weird little kid. And I would walk around in the woods, and hope that I would find the portal to Narnia. As I grew older, and I became more serious about writing, I realized that every book that I wrote, I was creating a portal to another world that I got to live in for however long it took me to write the book. So that was magic. I found the secret that solved the mystery.” – Melanie Gideon Melanie's Approach to Writing While some people get inspiration to hit them from their surroundings, Melanie prefers to go out and look for it herself. She often goes out to find inspiration, to find the story. For some writers, they wait for the story to materialize, to develop in their mind and they go from there. That does not work for Melanie. “I'm always actively looking for the story that will make something flutter inside me. And I know I have to follow that. It might not be the book that I write. But it will probably bring me to another path and another path, and eventually I'll stumble upon it.” – Melanie Gideon When asked where she goes to find her story, Melanie shares that she reads, a lot. Magazines, articles, sometimes other fiction novels that strike her interest. Which is interesting, as most writers would say, “I don't have time to read, I'm too busy writing”. Clearly, Melanie is not like most writers. To hear more from Melanie Gideon and her new book, Did I Say You Can Go, download and listen to this episode.

A reminder that I've moved to a once-a-month webinar format, held on the third Thursday of the month at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The topic is different each month, and I jam-pack them full of content. To learn about the next webinar: https://mastercoachwebinars.carrd.co Through various groups I belong to and sites I visit regularly, there is a lot of talk about being in a “toxic work environment.” Today, I want to drill down on what actually constitutes a toxic work environment and what to do if you are in one. I also want to talk about what isn't a toxic work environment and how to manage these situations. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about a toxic workplace: It is marked by significant infighting, where personal battles often harm productivity. Here's a quote: “It is reasonable to conclude that an organization can be considered toxic if it is ineffective as well as destructive to its employees.” Here's what monster.com has to say about a toxic work environment: A toxic work environment is one wherein dysfunction and drama reign, whether it's the result of a narcissistic boss, vindictive co-workers, absence of order, et cetera. In addition to harming your morale, this kind of climate can also be damaging to your health, says Paul White, co-author of Rising Above a Toxic Workplace. “Stress takes a toll on your body,” White says. Health problems stemming from a hostile workplace include hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and decreased mental health, and can lead to fatal conditions, research from Stanford and Harvard Universities found. “A toxic environment keeps people in a fight or flight mindset—the constant pump of cortisol, testosterone, and norepinephrine generates physical, emotional, and mental stress,” says Cheri Torres, an Asheville, North Carolina-based business leadership coach and author of Conversations Worth Having: Using Appreciative Inquiry to Fuel Productive and Meaningful Engagement. She says you can't do your best work when you work in a toxic workplace, and your health and well-being is at risk. As I was researching for this episode, I saw a lot of things credited as contributing to workplace toxicity that simply aren't. No boss, coworker, or CEO is perfect – and a boss who isn't organized or a coworker who is chronically late doesn't make a workplace toxic. Here are the signs Monster gives for a toxic workplace: 1. You are chronically stressed out. Take this quiz to find out how stressed you are: https://www.stress.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Workplace-Stress-Survey.pdf 2. You're being overworked. 3. You're being bullied. The Workplace Bullying Institute defines bullying as “repeated mistreatment of an employee by one or more employees; abusive conduct that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating; work sabotage; or verbal abuse.” While 61% of bullies are bosses, 33% of bullies are peers with the same rank as their targets, and a surprising 6% of bullies are subordinates, a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute found. 4. You're a contributor to – or recipient of – office gossip. 5. Your boss is a hothead. 6. Communication is poor/nonexistent, and it is affecting your ability to do your job. Here are additional signs from Bustle.com: 1. An absence of work/life balance (or, as I like to call it, work/life blend) 2. You are constantly getting sick. 3. Family and friends are noticing a difference in your character. 4. Your employer culture is “competitive conflict.” 5. Your time boundaries are not being respected. (Think “Two Weeks' Notice”) 6. Your boss encourages bad/unprofessional/unethical behavior 7. Your gut-check tells you that your ethics and morals are eroding the longer you work there – you are losing yourself. Here are clear-cut situations of workplace toxicity: 1. Sexual harassment 2. Bullying 3. Illegal behaviors (stealing, cheating, misrepresenting results) 4. Being asked to participate in or look the other way with illegal/unethical behaviors 5. Workplace safety or environmental issues that aren't addressed 6. Lies/undermining that are affecting your ability to do your job or get the results you are expected to achieve So what are your options when you find yourself in a toxic work environment? There are at least three: 1. Approach the perpetrator directly. A quote from Monster: “You should be able to resolve many interpersonal problems without intervention. “Generally, your best first step is to have a gentle backstage conversation with the person who's causing you harm,” says Sutton. But, rather than focusing on how someone's behavior makes you feel, focus on the negative consequences of the person's actions.” 2. Confront with a team and go up the chain of command. According to Monster: “If the direct approach is futile, you may have to get help from your superiors (assuming they're not the problem) to resolve serious issues with co-workers. But before you request a meeting, there are a couple measures you should take. “First, figure out if any of your peers are having similar problems. “The more fellow victims you have, the more power you have,” Sutton says. Obviously, you don't want to bombard your co-worker; one or two representatives in addition to yourself should suffice. “Second, gather hard evidence to prove your case. For example, if your colleague is frequently trying to sabotage your work by turning their assignments in late, compile emails that show times when this has happened and present what you have in the meeting.” 3. Plan your exit strategy. “Some companies simply have a culture of dysfunction. If the toxicity is coming from the top down, you may be better off coming up with an exit strategy,” according to Monster. Finally, let's talk about what doesn't constitute workplace toxicity. These are all contextual, because if one of these non-toxic things is happening and, as a result, your health is suffering or your friends and family are noticing a negative change in you, then there is evidence that that thin is toxic FOR YOU. What I want to make clear with these four things is that you have within your power the ability to shift your mindset around these things so that your experience at work is more positive. This DOES NOT mean you have to stay in that job…it simply means that, while you're still there, you can have a better experience. 1. You don't want to go to work. 2. You aren't as happy as work as you used to be. 3. You don't feel respected. 4. Your point of view and ideas aren't being heard. What can you do in these situations? Here are my suggestions: 1. Do a pros/cons exercise – what reasons do you have for not wanting to go to work? Why don't you feel as happy about work as you once did? In what ways DO you feel respected at work? When have your POV and ideas been heard at work? 2. Take a careful look at your cons – what shifts can you make to move some of these items out of this column? Maybe they won't end up in the pros column, but at least you can neutralize them. For example, if one of the reasons you don't want to go to work is a particular co-worker's attitude towards you, what can YOU do about that? You could schedule a time to speak one-on-one with this co-worker. If one of the reasons you aren't as happy at work as you used to be is because you've been passed over for a promotion, perhaps you could meet with your boss about why you weren't chosen and what you could do to increase your chances of success next time around. 3. Engage in a gratitude practice – Every morning, I write down three things I am truly grateful for, and I really FEEL that gratitude. 4. Mindfulness – Become more aware of when the negative thoughts are creeping in and choose to think something more positive instead. For example, if you find yourself sitting in your car in the parking lot every morning not wanting to enter the building, this is likely because you are thinking something like “I hate my job.” Once you realize this thought, you can shift your thinking to something like “I like _____ about my job.” A slight shift that can make all the difference. 5. Focus on what you CAN control – nothing exacerbates a feeling of powerlessness more than putting yourself in the role of victim. If you don't feel your POV is being heard at work, how can YOU show up to meetings differently to increase your chances of being heard? 6. Engage in a bit of perspective-adjusting. We tend to think the grass is always greener over there…but it often isn't. If you choose to go elsewhere, keep in mind that there may be similar problems there…or even worse ones. Enterprises nowadays are engulfed by data floods, with data sources ranging from cloud services, applications, to thousands of internal servers. The massive volume of data that organizations must process presents data ingestion challenges for many large companies. In this episode, data security engineer, Vitalli Rudenskyi, discusses the decision to replace a vendor security information and event management (SIEM) system by developing a custom solution with Apache Kafka® and Kafka Connect for a better data collection strategy.Having a data collection infrastructure layer is mission critical for Vitalii and the team in helping enterprises protect data and detect security events. Building on the base of Kafka, their custom SIEM infrastructure is configurable and designed to be able to ingest and analyze huge amounts of data, including personally identifiable information (PII) and healthcare data. When it comes to collecting data, there are two fundamental choices: push or pull. But how about both? Vitalii shares that Kafka Connect API extensions are integral to data ingestion in Kafka. The three key components to allow their SIEM system to collect and record daily by pushing and pulling: NettySource Connector: A connector developed to receive data from different network devices to Apache Kafka. It helps receive data using both the TCP and UDP transport protocols and can be adopted to receive any data from Syslog to SNMP and NetFlow.PollableAPI Connector: A connector made to receive data from remote systems, pulling data from different remote APIs and services.Transformations Library: These are useful extensions to the existing out-of-the-box transformations. Approach with “tag and apply” transformations that transform data into the right place in the right format after collecting data.Listen to learn more as Vitalii shares the importance of data collection and the building of a custom solution to address multi-source data management requirements. As they say... "Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater." What if you could keep those things you deem "bad" in your life and turn them into "great" things?? Is it even possible to do that?

This is Episode 300 of the My Morning Devotional PodcastFind us on Instagram:@mymorningdevo@alisonelizabethcoJoin our Facebook Community by clicking here!Join me, Alison Elizabeth as we read out of Ephesians 2:8 which says "8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God""Today is a reminder that God takes broken unqualified people and He uses them for His glory. Nothing about this podcast is for me, it is all for Him. I am no one special. I don't know what doubts cloud your mind but let me remind you that it is because of God's grace that we get to live our lives of freedom, of purpose and of love. So much so that I wanted to remind you again and again that it is because of Grace and Grace alone. We don't have to be perfect for Him to use us. Titus 2:11 says “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.” Romans 11:6 says “ And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” Acts 15:11 “11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.” Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Hebrews 4:16 Approach his throne with confidence . It is because of grace that we can do so. Thank you Jesus, use us today. "

Luxury Listing Specialist - Dominate High End Listings In Any Market
This week brings a major milestone for the Luxury Listing Specialist - we've published 150 episodes. Can you believe it? Thank you, everyone, for tuning in and sharing with your friends! It was a year ago when we launched our 100th episode. And what a year it's been. The pandemic brought about many changes in housing and lifestyle needs. The luxury real estate market is still hot. The average home sale price has gone up across the country. Even houses that languished on the market for months are selling. So to mark the occasion, rather than looking back at all 150 episodes, I'm just going to focus on episodes 101 to 150. My favorite episodes, takeaways, and how-tos the industry experts have offered real estate agents over the past year. “In this industry, it's easy to get dragged down...whether it's from the competition, a difficult client, or just life in general. We need to continue to build each other up and build ourselves up.” -Michael Lafido Three Things You'll Learn - Environment begets mindset: Environments shape mindsets. The people we interact with - at home, at work, and in other organizations influence mindsets. Approach difficult tasks first... “Eat the frog” - it's an old military saying that means do the difficult stuff first. - The importance of getting involved: If you are not part of any associations, I highly recommend getting involved with one. Not only from a networking standpoint, but also from a referral standpoint. - The importance of empathy: Buying or selling a home is stressful. Moving is stressful. Be empathetic to your buyers and sellers. It will make your client's experience better and will help you earn more referrals. Are you enjoying the show and getting value from it? If so, please: Rate/review the show. Please consider rating or leaving a review on whatever service you use to listen to it on (iTunes, Stitcher, etc.). April and Jen lament the last of our episodes celebrating the hits of the 1980s! But, as a wise woman once told us, “This is an astrology podcast” - so let's get to it! In this two-week period, five planets change signs: the Sun and Mercury enter LEEEooo (cue singing!), Venus and Mars enter Virgo and look for things to organize, and Jupiter backs into Aquarius for five bonus months of water-bearer goodness. Plus, an Aquarius Full Moon fit for a Muppet, and a Taurus Last Quarter Moon that highlights the magic inside all of us. Plus: the music of 1989, fizzy water, and… where did we put that box of shreddables?? Podpals: Please note that we are releasing episodes every two weeks for the summer! The next episode will drop on Aug. 2! But if you find you're missing us, let us know! Or leave a comment with your favorite songs from 1989, won't you? https://www.BigSkyAstroPod.com Read a full transcript: https://bit.ly/3xJhC7P 00:30 – A reminder: We have a lighter summer schedule and are releasing episodes every 2 weeks! If you'd like weekly updates, sign up for April's newsletter! https://bit.ly/3hK8MBt . 01:11 – Do April & Jen hear a sound in the distance? Is it podpals cheering (or weeping)? Our 1989 songs welcome one more into the Venn diagram of 1980s Musical Overlap: Jen selects “Steady On” by Shawn Colvin (April's first choice too!). Her other songs include “Ladies First” by Queen Latifah (April had it close - she is a Pisces with a Leo Moon! https://bit.ly/3hF1mPU), and “Closer to Fine” by Indigo Girls. April picks “Nick of Time” by Bonnie Raitt, “Language of the Heart” by David Wilcox, and “Love Shack” by the B-52s! Hear all our 80s picks: https://bit.ly/3fHbbKY. We also post our episodes on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3uQtlPR! . 05:17 – The Sun enters Leeeoo (July 22), the sign of its rulership! Most notable aspect is its opposition to Saturn at 10.11 Aquarius (Aug. 1). . 08:54 – Mercury also enters Leo, the sign of its fall (July 27). On Aug. 1, it also opposes Saturn. . 10:10 – Venus enters Virgo on July 21, the sign of its fall. The next day, it makes an opposition to Jupiter in Pisces (July 22). . 11:55 – Mars enters Virgo (July 29)! Earlier in the day, at 29.52 Leo, it opposes Jupiter in Aquarius. . 15:44 – Jupiter retrograde backs into Aquarius (July 28 - Dec. 28), after being in Pisces since May 13. It turns direct Oct. 17. Revisit late Dec. 2020 – mid-May 2021: What began then that you want to finish up? (To find where this is in your chart: https://bit.ly/3xEpQOJ. Or get a reading with April: https://bit.ly/3z39X4J!) . 18:18 – *MOONWATCH * We have a Full Moon at 1.26 Aquarius (July 23) on the Sabian symbol “An unexpected thunderstorm.” The Sun is on “An epidemic of the mumps.” This lunation calls us back to Jan. 24, 2020 and Feb. 11, 2021. It also reveals the progress of what we began at the July 9 New Moon. . 21:49 – This Full Moon is near where Jupiter and Saturn met up in Dec. 2020! (Review Ep. 61 https://bit.ly/3B5IYqZ.) . 24:04 – We also have a Last Quarter Moon at 8.33 Taurus (July 31)! This lunation makes a t-square with Saturn/Uranus! The escape route is in Scorpio: alone time, magic time, deep talks with a trusted friend, or transform yourself in some positive way. Venus asks us to be curious, especially related to money, values, and relationships! Approach life with beginner's mind (https://bit.ly/3eu8Gf5) and rational thought. (For more on the Nodes in Gemini/Sag, revisit Ep. 24 https://bit.ly/36FLKoT). . 30:59 – Big thanks to donors SHEILA MILLER, MARIA NOBRE, and ANNE MARIE FINCH! Your nice hosts come together for their first Nice Games Jam in person in a very long time! Did seeing each other together result in even wilder game jam shenanigans than you'd expect? Listen to the episode to find out! PlayThinker Deck - The Game Crafter Prompt We used Ellen's PlayThinker Deck to make this game! Goal card was "Efficiency", interaction cards were "Combination", "Approach", and "Exploration". Game type Card game Player count 2-4 Materials Basic 52 card deck (no jokers) 4 Meeples 12 Powerup tokens (3 different colors) Setup Shuffle deck and place cards in a 4 by 4 grid. Give each player one meeple to represent them. Rules Player can move onto any card on their side of the grid as their first turn. On their turn each player moves one card and reveals it, potentially giving you an ability Revealing a face card gives you an item, which gives you one of the following abilities: One gives the ability to move one more space. One gives the ability to peek at one more card. One gives the ability to move diagonally. Getting three items allows you to take one turn to bank three items, losing those three abilities but giving you one point. Revealing an Ace removes all items that player's have not banked. Bank your items to prevent losing a point! Revealing the four corners refresh all unrevealed cards except cards that a player is on. When the deck runs out, the game ends when all the board is revealed (no more refreshes, fill out the rest of the board with a shuffled discarded deck). Whoever has the most points after that last round wins the game!
Adam and Dan discuss the process behind how they come up with fake NBA trades, and how they prepare for the negative backlash of them. This was a fun, fantastic conversation, and we strongly recommend listening to it in its entirety. After that, though, we talk about actual fake trades involving the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers and much more. Finally, Dan discusses the impact of Kawhi Leonard's partially right torn ACL on his future, as well as the Clippers' outlook. TIMESTAMPS⬇️
Kate Grayson is a Money Coach and Founder of Beyond Money, where she specializes in helping people improve their financial lives on their own terms; no jargon, no shame, and no boilerplate solutions. On this episode of CFO at Home, Kate and Vince discuss tips for starting a budget, ideas for developing sustainable budget habits, debt pay-off methods, and more. Key Takeaways: Tips for starting with Budgeting Understand where you are financially right now Get it on paper (spending, debt, assets) Estimate your monthly expenses Manually track your actual spending against those estimates for a couple of months Brings to light misalignments between how much you think you're spending on certain items and how much you're really spending. Some common areas of misalignment Groceries Shopping (in-person and on-line) Child-related expenses Ideas for developing, good sustainable budget/money habits Regular “Money Dates” for couples Budgets, like life, are dynamic and change. Keep the budget regularly updated so you can spot issues and “course correct” in a timely fashion Use “Value-Based Bookkeeping” - View your spending through the lens of your values, then use that information to prioritize spending Helps you to align your spending with your values, not someone else's Debt pay-off methods Paying highest interest debt first (Debt Avalanche) - Often appeals to those with analytical minds based on the math. Not always the most emotionally motivating Paying the lowest balance debt first (Debt Snowball) - Can provide more “quick wins” in terms of eliminating individual debts which can provide motivation Pay the most hated debt first - Can be effective when there's debt resulting from difficult life circumstances (injuries from an accident, divorce, etc) The best method is usually a personal decision - whatever best motivates you Credit Scores An important financial datapoint, but not the “end-all, be-all” Maintaining good, fundamental financial habits (paying bills on time, etc) can help your credit score without resorting to more “creative” methods Approach the subject of money with your “Non-CFO” partner with compassion Ways to contact/follow: BeyondMoney.co BeyondMoney.co (Instagram) Contact the Host - vince@thecfoathome.com

Air Date: 07 08 21 Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? New Testament writers are never satisfied with theology alone. Belief must be followed by life. If at any time the behavior of Christ's disciples appears to be less than they should exhibit, then apostolic writers wasted no time in goading them to a life consistent with the call of Christ. The author of Hebrews is no exception. Evidently he has a number of concerns that surface at various times in the course of the epistle. Unlike Paul, who gathers all his exhortation after his theological presentation, our teacher-exhorter interrupts his teaching any time the material brings to his mind some weakness in his readers. At that moment he will subtly or forthrightly launch into a goading exhortation. The passages of exhortation are 2:1–4, 3:7–4:16, 5:11–6:20, and 10:19–13:17. A common pattern appears in each, although there may be additions or variations. That pattern includes, first, exhortation or command, then a warning, and, finally, a supporting, reasoned explanation. The themes of the exhortation passages may be described as follows: 2:1–4: “Give the more earnest heed to what we have heard!” or, “Hold fast your confession!” 3:7–4:16: “Trust and obey!” (The danger of the disbelieving heart that leads to disobedience and a hardened heart.) 5:11–6:20: “Go on to maturity!” (A plea against slowness of growth and a warning against the danger of apostasy.) 10:19–39: “Approach with holy boldness!” Listen to Abiding in Christ Ministries with radio host Lesha Cantrell Monday through Friday at 6:45am (MT) on AM670, KLTT in Colorado; online at 670kltt.com; or via your mobile device on the free KLTT app. May God richly bless you as you abide in Christ!

Marketing doesn't have to be Big Bucks spent on advertising. In fact, some of the best marketing you can do is free or low cost. If you're just starting out there probably isn't much left in the budget for paid marketing. We've been there! In this episode, we've dug deep to find all the tools we used instead of heavy investments—and some we still do. One thing to note, you'll need to invest something in your marketing—if it's not money, it's your time. This episode we'll cover: * Revising keywords * Tweaking your blurbs * Reach out to other authors for Facebook group intro / newsletter swaps / social media interviews * Writing another series "lead in" as a giveaway on bookfunnel * Revise your Goodreads strategy (see our interview with Alessandra Torres for ideas - https://spagirls.libsyn.com/spa-girls-ep235-interview-with-alessandra-torre) * Run some social media giveaways using ebook / bookfunnel * Review your author bio * Refresh your website and social media graphics with canva * Create quotes from your books and book review quotes for social media on canva (for example) * Join another social media platform and have fun - try Tik Tok - front facing videos "raw" are very popular and effective when done well. Free advertising! * Set up a free store on a merchandise site like Cafe Press, create some "reader focussed" designs yourself in canva (eg quotes if you're not artistic) and use them as giveaways and for sale * Run a newsletter subscriber - specific poll or competition to encourage sharing of your social media posts * If in KU, use your 5 day free runs on Bk1s and run as many ads as you can afford on Day 1 with smaller advertiser lists like book vixens, book sends, book gorilla etc. * Paid per click ads like bookbub ads, Facebook ads and AMS ads generally cost more than $100/month so we're focusing on lower priced ad lists with free book, concentrated over the 5 days, to give you a sales boost on back list * Box set your existing series books to create another product * Research the top 100 of your genre every day for the next 90 days - see who's on top, who's upcoming, what covers and what blurbs are selling. There'll be things you can learn in there. *Not selling? Get honest feedback on whether you're hitting the market tropes / reader expectations / cover expectations from other authors before you invest more time and energy into writing something off market *Goal is to make more money so you can invest back into your business. The key is investing in Great Product though, so all the effort you put in now into understanding your market and your readers will pay off big time in the future -write a bonus epilogue that readers must sign up for your email newsletter to download. Try doing it in public – start a blog about your journey into publishing and try to engage with fans right from the start. Create a journey for your readers on social media – plan out a campaign that takes them from being not interested, to being engaged. How do you do that? People love to talk about themselves, ask them engaging questions. Know your brand/readers really well. Look for the places where they'll be. Think outside the box in terms of finding readers. If you have a book that is set on a boat, look for boating magazines that might be interested in featuring you. Go live. Remember people don't want perfect. Be vulnerable. Don't be afraid to be who you really are. People want authenticity over perfection. We hate feeling like something is too slick. Approach local media outlets. HARO. Welcome to the Siim Land Podcast I'm your host Siim Land and today our guest is Richelle Brooks. Richelle is one of the founders of the Balanced Aesthetics Medspa that's like a clinic that offers different kinds of wellness and longevity treatments like peptides or hormone replacement therapy. In this episode, we're going to talk about the benefits of these peptides. This episode is brought to you by Kaatsu Training. Kaatsu Bands incorporate blood flow moderation training that tricks the body into thinking it's lifting heavier weights than it actually is. When traditional weightlifting requires you to reach 70-80% of your 1 repetition maximum to stimulate muscle hypertrophy, then Kaatsu bands achieve that effect only at 20-30%. So, it's perfect for treating injuries or used when you don't have access to heavier weights. Research about Kaatsu bands also shows it lowers blood pressure, speeds up recovery from injuries, releases stem cells, builds muscle, burns fat, and prevents age-related muscle loss. These things are amazing and I use them almost every day to recover from my heavier workouts. If you want to try out the Kaatsu bands, then use the code SIIM for a 10% discount at kaatsu-global.com. Text LEARNERS to 44222 for more... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Julia Galef is co-founder of the Center for Applied Rationality. She is the author of The Scout Mindset: Why Some People See Things Clearly and Others Don't. Notes: What is the scout mindset? “The motivation to see things as they are, not as you wish them to be.” The Scout Mindset allows you to recognize when you were wrong, to seek out your blind spots, to test your assumptions and change course. It's what prompts you to honestly ask yourself questions like “Was I at fault in that argument?” or “Is this risk really worth it?” As the physicist Richard Feynman said: “The first rule is that you must not fool yourself – and you are the easiest person to fool.” The three prongs: Realize that trust isn't in conflict with your other goals Learn tools that make it easier to see clearly Appreciate the emotional rewards of scout mindset She closes her TED talk with this quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." "The biggest bottleneck is not knowledge. It's motivation. You need to cultivate the motivation to see things clearly." “Julia Galef is an intellectual leader of the rationalist community, and in The Scout Mindset you will find an engaging, clearly written distillation of her very important accumulated wisdom on these topics.” -- Tyler Cowen We should assume that we are wrong. We need to build the skill to change our mind. "Our goal should be to be less wrong over time." How do you work on this? The key principle is the way you think about being wrong. "Don't accept the premise that being wrong means you screwed up." Jeff Bezos left his job on Wall Street to start Amazon and acknowledged the uncertainty. He estimated that his idea had about a 30% chance to work. The Scout versus Soldier mindset: A lot of times, humans are in a soldier mindset - "Belief was strong, unshakeable, opposed argument. A soldier is having to defend." Scout mindset - survey and see what's true. Form an accurate map. Practical application: Be cognizant how you seek out and respond to criticism. Don't ask leading questions. Recognize the tendency to describe the conflict accurately. Also... Not all arguments are worth having. Show signals of good faith. Distinguish between two kinds of confidence: Social - Poised, charismatic, relaxed body language, be worth listening to Epistemic - How much certainty that you have in your views Persuade while still expressing uncertainty: "I think there's a 70% chance this won't work." Lyndon Johnson - Need to understand why someone wouldn't agree with you... We are all the sum of our experiences... Approach people, places, and things with curiosity Life/Career advice: You're creating a brand - Be conscious of the type of people you're attracting. Work to attract those that make you a better version of yourself. Make the choice to attract people who like intellectual honesty like Vitalik Buterin (founder of Ethereum)
Striving to achieve a ‘balanced life’ on a daily basis sets you up for failure. Approach it instead from a long-term perspective. Aim for self-awareness. Go all-in on what lights you up. Along the way, be gentle with yourself. We are here to follow our curiosity, not mercilessly judge ourselves. Awareness is key. Shame is counterproductive.Welcome to another edition of ‘Roll On’, wherein myself and Lord of the podcast manor Adam Skolnick wane and wax on philosophical, spiritual, and practical ideas both big and small. He is the author of One Breath and is currently awash in his umpteenth draft of an untitled novel—slowly losing his mind in the process.Topics explored in today’s conversation include:the ultramarathon tragedy in China and why there must be better protocols and oversight in this growing sport;thoughts on Adam Grant’s recent NYT article, There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing;Rich’s current approach to writing, motivation, and why balance is overrated;SriMu’s Father’s Day Special, 10% off not-cheese boxes for all hard-working dads;Hellah Sidibe’s impressive, history making ultra-run across the United States;an update on the Iron Cowboy’s history-making Conquer 100;Van Neistat’s The Spirited Man series on YouTube;the Malcolm Gladwell vs. Chris Chavez journalist / influencer 1-mile challenge; andthe legacy of Duke KahanamokuIn addition, we answer the following listener questions:How do you create time to care for yourself without disappointing others? How do you avoid late-night hunger pangs following a day of rigorous training? What is the best way to transition from road to trail running?Thank you to Sierra (or Ciara) from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kevin from Northern California, and Ben from Columbus, Ohio for your questions.
