This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief visits Frankfort, Kentucky, to sit down with Jeff and Cam Mattingly of J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery and Bourbon 30—where tradition is honored, craftsmanship is respected, and every bottle carries a legacy. For nearly two centuries, the Mattingly family has played a vital role in shaping the bourbon industry, their expertise spanning nine whiskey operations and countless collaborations with some of the most respected names in the business. Jeff and his son Cam continue that tradition, refining the single barrel selection process into something truly remarkable. But their work extends beyond whiskey—they are committed to giving back, donating $10 from every bottle sold to veteran organizations across the country. Their dedication to honoring those who have served is a testament to their values and the deeper meaning behind their craft. Big Chief begins the show with Bourbon 30 at 100 proof—a pour that carries rich, nutty character with a warm rye spice that lingers on the palate. He then moves to their core SKU at 116 proof, a whiskey layered with deep, dark fruit sweetness, balanced by a spice that stays with you long after the last sip. The second half of the show is a tribute to those who have sacrificed for our nation. The 82nd Airborne expression, bottled at 128 proof, is bold and unwavering—much like the paratroopers it represents. Its spice and tobacco notes command respect, a reflection of the courage and grit required to serve in one of the most demanding units in the military. To close out, Big Chief raises a glass to another military tribute—The Combat Infantry Badge, Batch 6. At 135 proof, this light whiskey is powerful yet refined, with buttery richness, seasoned oak, honey, and a touch of smoke. The finish is long and meaningful, much like the service and dedication of those it honors. This episode is more than just a whiskey tasting—it is a moment to recognize and respect the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. As a veteran, I extend my gratitude to the Mattingly family for their commitment to both bourbon and the brave individuals who defend our freedoms. So pour a glass, take a moment to reflect, and join us for another meaningful journey on The Whiskey Trip. Cheers!

The disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. A lack of strategy to face China. Indifference in the face of Iranian protests. In-fighting over the correct policy to support Ukraine. Is it any wonder that the American people are wondering about the efficacy and longevity of America's power? A hard look at American history suggests that the reasons behind American decline have more to do with choice than with circumstances. Decline, after all, is a choice for American presidents persuaded the nation is not a force for good in the world. Leaders in Washington who are willing to adopt strong and decicive military policy are few and far between, on both sides of the aisle. How do we fix decades of decaying interest in American power? How do we market American security in the global context to reluctant internationalists? These questions and more with today's guest, Senator Tom Cotton. Sen. Cotton is the U.S. Senator for Arkansas, and just released the book, Only the Strong: Reversing the Left's Plot to Sabotage America. His senatorial committees include the Judiciary Committee, the Intelligence Committee, and the Armed Services Committee. He previously served in Iraq with the 101st Airborne, and served in Afghanistan with a Provincial Reconstruction team. He also served with The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, and has received the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Ranger Tab.Download the transcript here.

Jan Scruggs went to Vietnam in 1969 to serve as a rifleman in the U.S. Army. By the end of his service, he had received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, and an award for gallantry. After the war, he researched post-traumatic stress, which led to him testify before congress in support of establishing the nationwide Vet Center Program. In 1979, Scruggs decided he wanted to create a memorial to all the Americans who died in the Vietnam War in order to help the country heal. Three years later, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was completed in Washington D.C.
Six. That was the number of black bags Army Veteran Frederick Bourjaily and his comrades carried back to base after completing his first operation control assignment while serving in the Vietnam War. And though the experience happened over half-a-century ago, that memory lingers deeply in Bourjaily's mind today.Bourjaily shares this story precisely because he wants others to hear it. He wants today's young service members and military prospects to understand what war is like and to be prepared for all its brutality. He also wants Veterans who may be coping with their own traumas to know that they will never be alone. In this episode of Borne the Battle, Bourjaily shares what his war time experience was like while also being a father, and some ways he continues to help the Veteran community today as the national commander of the Combat Infantrymen's Association. More than just being a group that brings together Veterans who received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bourjaily leads the group agitating for military-oriented legislative reform in political arenas.Bourjaily was also a mentor with the Genesee County, Michigan Veterans Treatment Court. These Veteran-oriented courts – which regularly coordinate with VA – help many Veterans who commit non-violent offenses avoid falling into a cycle of trouble with the law. And Bourjaily helped Veterans who participated in this program follow a strict but manageable plan to get their lives back on track and get their crimes expunged from their record.Bourjaily struggled to readjust to civilian life because of the images he saw while serving. Podcast26: When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: the Truth & the Pulse of what matters Hello Everyone! Welcome back to iIrish; Songs, Stories & Shenanigans. After listening, I hope you will feel we have a great show for you today. What’s the News, What’s the News? What’s the news today? Well, Passover begins at Sundown tomorrow; the virtual Lincoln & The Irish Presentation is Saturday at 1; my interview with the LAOH and Marilyn Madigan is Sunday at 1; the spectacular print edition of the April issue comes on Wednesday; Friday is Good Friday (and last Fish Fry of the year); Sunday the 4th is Easter; and the last day before we podcast meet again on April 9th, is Holocaust Remembrance Day. There is a varied mix of celebratory and solemn events, for sure, each deserving of our attention. Did you get the jab yet? I got my 1st one on Monday, at the Wolstein Center. If you haven’t, I highly encourage you to call the 833 number, rather than try and book online – I got an appt the next day. The Army Airborne’s were manning the Center – The speed, graciousness and organization just blew me away. I had a 3:30 Appt, got there at 3:20; because of me auld cane was escorted to check in, then another soldier escorted me to a seat. Within minutes, a soldier came to me, holding a tablet, asked a few questions, and said left or right shoulder? I chose the left, since I heard it might ache for a while after. About 10 minutes later, another soldier came over, verified me, and administered a Pfizer shot. I kid you not, I did not feel a thing. He said he had been doing medical duties for about 2 years – In a lifetime of RA and back shots, this fella was better than most I have encountered. He then set me up for the 2nd shot appt. in 3 weeks. I got up, walked out, and went to my car; it was 3:45. I cannot adequately describe how impressive the whole process was. I am grateful, AND I never felt any shot pain that day, or since. I’d like to share a celebratory story from the coming issue with you, written by John Myers: Donnybrook: The Greatest Generation by John Myers Robert James O’Malley died in February 2021 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 98. O’Malley, a proud son of Cleveland, was like so many Irish Clevelanders of his generation; he had a hard scrabble childhood growing up on the near-west side of Cleveland. He joined the building trades; fought fascist dictators as a soldier; was a good public servant and a great human; living a life of little fanfare, middle class economics, and thousands of friends. We salute the quiet, everyday contributions to our community, our Nation, and our world by these members of the Greatest Generation, living and watching history each day. Bob ‘earned’ his Purple Heart on the same snowcapped mountain in Italy, on the same day as his fellow 10th Mountain Division member, Senator Robert Dole. This Bob left Cleveland to join the Congressional Staff of his good friend, Robert Emmett Sweeney, in Washington, but he always had Cleveland in his head and heart. He was a cherished friend of Cleveland Congressman James V. Stanton. Every Sunday, Bob took a taxi to St. Stephen’s on Pennsylvania Avenue, a church close to the Whitehouse, also frequented by JFK. O’Malley lived in a modest efficiency across the street from the historic Omni-Shoreham Hotel, the sight of everything from FDR’s inaugural ball to late night, bipartisan poker games with President Truman, to hosting the Beatles on their first trip to the U.S. Not being much of a cook, Bob walked across the street every day for most meals at the Shoreman’s dining room. In fact, the hotel staff put a plaque up at his ‘usual’ table. Bob will be buried at Arlington Cemetery, and now more than ever, we all state the 10th Mountain’s motto: “Climb to Glory” Bob, you deserve it. Purple Heart Winner Several years ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid honored his good friend with these words, which were entered into the Congressional record in 2010: Mr. Reid: Mr. President, every one of our servicemembers deserves the unqualified appreciation and admiration of the Senate and our entire Nation. Today, I wish to salute the service of one such soldier, a man who first answered his country’s call in World War II and has not stopped. Bob O’Malley served our nation with distinction in the 10th Mountain Division in combat in Europe. He was a sergeant and a squad leader who led his men bravely and with honor. He put his life on the line on many occasions to protect his men and to fight for freedom against Nazi Germany and was recognized with his squad’s admiration, the Combat Infantry Badge and, because he was wounded, a Purple Heart. But he has not stopped serving his country. Bob came to Washington in 1965 and worked for Congressman Robert E. Sweeney before starting a 27-year career with the Doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Representatives. That is where I first met him, as a young Member of Congress. The Doorkeeper, Mr. Molloy, and Mr. O’Malley had a suite of offices and it was kind of a hangout for Democratic members of the House; especially it was a way for new Members of the Congress to become acquainted with what was going on over there. They were very caring about new Members and always pointed us in the right direction. I have always remembered those two men for all the good deeds they did on my behalf. His was a 27-year career with the Doorkeeper. As I indicated, that is where I met him. By the time the war in Afghanistan started in 2002, Bob had retired from service in the House of Representatives. Most retirees are content to seek a well-earned life of leisure, but Sergeant O’Malley did not. He signed up for a new and worthy mission, waking every day to serve our Nation’s wounded warriors. When the war started, he went back to work as a volunteer-supporting and caring for the men and women of the 10th Mountain Division, his old unit. He has made countless visits to Walter Reed, this great medical center where these wounded warriors come to recuperate. On all these visits to Walter Reed, he spent countless hours talking and sharing stories about the Division and taking his fellow veterans to ball games and other events, including the sharing of meals on many occasions. When many of these wounded warriors could not make it home for the holiday, Bob would reach into his own pocket and pay for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s dinners for soldiers and their families at some of the finest eateries in the Washington, D.C. area. Bob says that helping soldiers recover from their war injuries has added years to his life. We know it has added years to the lives of those he helps. Bob O’Malley would be the first to tell you this is not a one-man mission. He has had help from many different areas. When he decided to help those wounded on the battlefield, for example, he enlisted the help of another veteran and fellow Clevelander, Dom Visconsi, Sr., an original member of the 10th Mountain Division in World War II. He asked Dom to help, and Dom was happy to help entertain and support these troops. Many of Bob’s friends soon joined the cause as well, and they are a constant presence for the soldiers, whether here or at home. Our Army would not be the best place in the world without the work of veterans such as Sergeant O’Malley, whose life has been synonymous with service, sacrifice, and selflessness. He is an inspiration to me, our Armed Forces, and our country. He is a hero, and I am proud to call him a friend. Our April issue comes out on Wednesday. It is our 172nd issue. I kid you not, it may be the strongest issue we have ever put out. Stories on the legendary Sarah Makem; The Captures of Cash, which is a new feature highlighting Irish historic sites today, by photographer John Cash; Cleveland IrishBaseball in America, The Gaelic Football and Hurling Tournament coming to Cleveland next month; an Illuminating story on The Whiteboys, relative to today’s world; new Toledo Irish Columnist Molly McHugh’s Levi & Lilacs Coffee Pub; and a new occasional feature on Stone Mad, a joint effort by a Cleveland man John Digney and the Dry Wall Association of Ireland to understand and preserve the story of stone walls prevalent throughout Ireland. The walls were not randomly built; you will be very surprised at the meaning and measure taken there. Plus, we have our Speak Irish monthly lesson; Safe Home wishes to Tom Bodle and Beverly Connolly. And of course, there is humor, opinion, Kid’s Craic and Coloring contest, profiles and history, book and music reviews and the monthly Irish Crossword Puzzle. The crosswords are a great way to learn or refresh your Irish knowledge, history and folklore, and all past issues, with the crossword inside, are available on our website, OhioIANews.com. Our April cover shot and Inner View this month is an extensive conversation with Irish American Melissa Fitzgerald, former West Wing show and other TV, live and film actor veteran, now leading Justice for Vets, a non-profit organization based in DC that works to help Vets. It was probably the most interesting Inner View I have ever done. The stories are shared on our Facebook, twitter and Instagram pages, of course. Part I in the issue comes out on Wednesday and all the stories, with more pics, more text and LARGER print, are lodged online soon after. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The definition of hope is “to expect with confidence,” but what do you do when you’ve lost confidence in everything? When you’ve watched your dreams go up in smoke? When you feel isolated from those you love and you start to question the God you’ve built your life around? How do you find confidence when all the things you had confidence in lay shattered all around you? Blindness became Major Scotty Smiley’s journey of supreme testing. As he lay helpless in the hospital, he resented the theft of his dreams—becoming a CEO, a Delta Force operator, or a four-star general. With his wife Tiffany’s love and the support of his family and friends, Scotty’s response became God’s transforming moment. Scotty Smiley is from from Pasco, a small city in Washington State. After high school he attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. After four great years, he graduated and moved to Fort Benning, Georgia and attended Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger School. Soon after he moved to Fort Lewis, Washington where he led a 45 man Platoon. In 2005 while leading his Platoon in Mosul, Iraq, Scotty found himself in front of a suicide car bomb. After the man blew himself up, shrapnel blew through Scotty’s eyes leaving him blinded and temporarily paralyzed, he woke up in Walter Reed Army Medical Center a week later. Though questioning his faith, Scotty made a decision to forgive and rebuild his life and continue to serve in the Army, becoming the first blind active-duty officer in military history. The Army Times named Scotty “Soldier of the Year” in 2007 and in 2008 he won an ESPY as the world’s Best Outdoor Athlete. After receiving a Master of Business Administration from Duke University, Scotty taught the core course in leadership at West Point and then commanded the Warrior Transition Unit at West Point’s Keller Army Medical Center. Scotty is a recipient of the Army’s prestigious MacArthur Leadership Award and holds an honorary PhD from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY. In 2010, Scotty received a Father of the Year award in New York and in 2011 received the Christopher Award for all he has given and continues to give. Since then, Scotty attended the Maneuver Captain Career Course in Fort Benning, Georgia, and then moved to Spokane, Washington where he held a position with the Gonzaga University ROTC Department, teaching and mentoring America’s future leaders. After many years of service, Scotty retired from the military in 2015. Over his military career Major (Retired) Smiley received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart; Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Airborne Wings and Combat Diver Qualification Badge. He currently works with the capital markets department at Drexel Hamilton out of New York as an investment banker for corporations and banks around the world. With a passion for using his story to build hope in this world, Scotty authored Hope Unseen in 2010 and now travels all over the country speaking and sharing his message of perseverance, courage and hope. He is an avid adventurer and has completed the Coeur d’Alene Iron Man, climbed Mt Rainer, gone skydiving, surfing and is always looking for his next chance to try something new. Scotty is married to his high school sweetheart, Tiffany and the couple lives in Spokane and are the proud parents of three wonderful children. For show notes, visit calwalters.me.

VIETNAM AMBUSH: SOLDIER IN THE BUSH by Daniel Seidenberg Jr. Vietnam Ambush tells the story of a young man answering the call of America to fight a war against the communist Vietnamese as a replacement with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in 1968/69. It tells of his days in training, combat, recovering from injuries, and his return home amidst the antiwar fervor that had engulfed the USA at that time. “This memoir will give the reader an invaluable insight into one’s participation in a war that today most Americans prefer to forget about.” –Bernie Weisz, Historian, Vietnam War “It is a well-written account of the war from the perspective of a soldier in the field. It should be read by every young American who thinks war might be glorious.” –David Krieger, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation At age nineteen, Daniel Seidenberg Jr. received a draft notice. Thus began his journey through army life, infantry combat, and nearly fatal wounds that left him totally disabled. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and two Campaign (battle) Stars. https://www.stratton-press.com/books/vietnam-ambush-soldier-in-the-bush/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/danseidenbergjr.mp3
Mark’s great friend, Democrat Congressman Max Rose, joins him on the podcast today. Max is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the London School of Economics, who has served as an active duty officer in Afghanistan from 2012-2013 and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Max is Ranger-qualified, continues to serve in the National Guard, and is the first post-9/11 combat veteran to represent New York City. The passage he has chosen to discuss with Mark is Exodus 32:4, the passage which he has decided will be his son’s Bar Mitzvah portion 13 years from now. Max begins today’s discussion by sharing his summary of the passage and how it provides an example of speaking truth to power, and then he and Mark offer differing perspectives on Aaron’s leadership within it. They follow with an in depth investigation into the nature of leadership both in the passage and in the world today, particularly in relation to Max’s work with the military and in politics, and they review the moral obligation we all have to question authority as Moses did. The conversation finishes with Max sharing the lessons he has learned about mankind. Today’s episode exemplifies the beauty of the Torah in its openness to interpretation as well as its timeless guidance. As Max states, everyone has an opportunity to lead at some point in their lives, and today’s passage and resulting analysis offer listeners valuable perspective to consider when their opportunity arrives. Episode Highlights: Max’s summary of the passage Speaking truth to power Differing perspectives on Aaron’s leadership The hardest thing to do in leadership The moral obligation to question authority Strong leadership in times of failure The lessons which Max has learned about mankind Quotes: “Moses subsequently speaks truth to power…pushes back upon God using God’s own words.” “One could also argue he bought some time.” “We don’t teach leadership enough to young people.” “Who among us knows what we would do if we were in Aaron’s position?” “It is confidence in God. It is confidence that God will not put ego first, will not put arrogance first, but that God will put His own sense of moral clarity, moral consistency, and rightness first.” “Moses always defends his people externally, and criticizes them internally.” “He leads his leader.” “We have far too much arrogance in our society today.” Exodus 32:4 This he took from them and cast in a mold, and made it into a molten calf. And they exclaimed, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” https://www.sefaria.org/Exodus.32.4 Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en
Mark is delighted to be joined today by his good friend, Senator Tom Cotton, to discuss his passage of choice: Isaiah 6:8. Tom grew up on his family’s cattle farm in Arkansas, graduated from both Harvard and Harvard Law School, and eventually joined the Army where he served in Iraq and Afghanistan. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Ranger Tab, and he has served with The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to the Senatorial work he does with a number of committees, Tom is also the NY Times best selling author of Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington National Cemetery. Tom begins today’s conversation by offering a summary of the passage along with the reasons why it is so meaningful not only to him, but to young soldiers, chaplains, and so many throughout the Army. He and Mark then discuss the partnership between man and God, the distinction of truly knowing and truly understanding, and Tom shares how The Old Guard, with whom he served, embodies the meaning of this passage. As always, our guest finishes the discussion by recounting the lessons that he has learned about mankind throughout his remarkable life. Tune in today to learn, along with Mark, just how important this passage is to those who serve in the Army, and the lessons it can offer to all of us. Episode Highlights: Tom’s summary of the passage and the meaning it holds for him Why it is meaningful to young soldiers How Chaplains use this passage in the Army The partnership between man and God Truly knowing and understanding How The Old Guard embodies the meaning of this passage The lessons that Tom has learned about mankind Quotes: “Probably one of the two most cited verses among soldiers, at least the soldiers I knew at the time I served.” “The Army’s way to purify you, to turn you into a true soldier who’d be ready to go forth and do the work, Lord’s work and the nation’s work.” “You should always do your duty and do what’s asked of you.” “It’s through that partnership of man and God that God’s work gets done on the Earth.” “There’s a difference between knowing of something and truly knowing it; of perceiving it and truly understanding it.” “Do the hard right over the easy wrong.” “Hopefully, the eternal wisdom and ever inspiring words of the Bible can bring us to an ever better place, politically and otherwise.” Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of my Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me.” https://www.sefaria.org/Isaiah.6.8 Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en
I’m not allowed to have favorite episodes and honestly, each one is pretty different. But my interview with Bud Isaacs is certainly one of my favorites. Mines grad, Vietnam vet, a career in oil and gas, lover of the outdoors, and most recently advocate for the water shed on the western slope. The co-authored book- “Oil and Water” is a fascinating dive into the world of water and what keeps 40 million Americans hydrated from the Colorado River. Water is THE crisis of the next 50 years and the book is a pretty powerful introduction to the concepts and thoughts around how society gets its water. Oh yeah, and he, his wife and most of his direct family had COVID in a February. Lots of learnings, insights and just a wonderfully enjoyable day for me to spend with Bud at his house. #hottakeoftheday podcast Episode 59 w/Bud Isaacs https://youtu.be/bsH5CDLiyOs Audio Podcast About Bud Vernon A. Robert Burr is an 87-year-old Delaware resident who served in the Korean War. Just before joining the U.S. Army in 1951, Burr was quarreling with his girlfriend and didn't like his job, he said. He had intended to join the U.S. Air Force, he said, but the recruiting officer told him the Air Force’s quota had been met. “But if I joined the Army, I could get training in any specialty I wanted,” he recalled the officer telling him. “I foolishly believed him.” Burr took infantry basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before being sent to Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Infantry Regiment. He was a gunner on the 57 Recoilless -- a 45-pound, 5-foot-long gun that shot 6-pound projectiles. “When you fired it, you had better be ready to run, as everyone would direct their fire on your position” Burr said. Burr volunteered for the front lines, he said. “If you were front line, you got four points per month,” he said. “And it took 36 points to rotate out and go home.” He was involved in two fierce battles in 1951 -- Bloody Ridge, where he became a squad leader after his leader was wounded, and Heartbreak Ridge, where he was wounded in October. Many of his comrades had fallen, and only a handful remained when a mortar shell landed behind him, showering him with shrapnel. Burr returned to Fort Knox and was assigned as a field first sergeant in a training company. He later attended leadership school and graduated at the top of his class. He continued serving in the Army as an infantry-tactics instructor until 1954, training young soldiers. He retired as a master sergeant. His decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Medal, the Good Conduct Ribbon and the Purple Heart. Burr was born in Clinton Township in Columbus and lived there until he was 14. He then moved to Pataskala and graduated from then Pataskala High School in 1950 and went on to attend Bliss Business College in Columbus. By the way, after his military career, he ended up marrying the girl with whom he was quarreling and returned to the job he didn't like, having retired there after 34 years. His wife died, and he later married Barbara. He has three children, two having died. Burr returned to Korea in September 2001 on the week of 9/11. His stay lasted much longer than intended because no one was permitted to fly out, he said. This podcast was produced by Scott Hummel, ThisWeek assistant managing editor, digital.
Don Jakeway of Johnstown is a 95-year-old World War II U.S. Army veteran who was dropped behind enemy lines just prior to the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, as part of the elite 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. His parachute landed in a tree next to a church in the middle of the night, with German fighters nearby and floodwaters below. The tree saved his life, and some in his unit were killed because of the waters. He enlisted in November 1942 and survived Normandy only to get shot in the lung during the Battle of the Bulge, which began in December 1944. While being extracted, his jeep hit a rough patch of road and flipped several times, landing at the bottom of the hill and killing everyone but him. Jakeway remained in the Army until August 1945. Staff Sgt. Jakeway has a pile of medals and honors, among them the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge and induction into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame. He has many, many more, and he has a street and some ball fields named after him in Johnstown, Ohio. He returned to Normandy for a visit in 2014 and saw the tree in which he had landed. Jakeway was born and raised in Johnstown and graduated from Johnstown-Monroe High School in 1942. He's married to Roselyn, and they have four adult children, several adult grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Now retired, Jakeway's post-military career included a stint at a Shell gas station, working for $25 a week. He later worked for a steel company and a drinking-fountain supplier, retiring from Tech International in 1992. Jakeway also is the author of "Paratroopers Do or Die!"
