According to the World Health Organization, of the estimated 80 million people in need a wheelchair, only 5–35% have access to one. In low-income countries, as few as 3% of people have access to the assistive products they need. That's why each year, dedicated Joni and Friends volunteers collect thousands of used manual wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. Donated wheelchairs are restored to like-new condition by inmates in prison-based restoration centers located across the United States. This restoration process offers inmates the opportunity to make a difference for others and experience redemptive purpose in their own lives. Each recipient receives a custom-fit wheelchair and hears the Gospel message. Recipients also receive a Bible in their language, get training in wheelchair use and upkeep, and have the opportunity to connect with a local Christ-honoring church. Last week, several local churches, in partnership with Joni and Friends, served as local donation centers for used wheel chairs, bringing the hope of the Gospel to those with mobility needs! https://joniandfriends.org/florida/ For volunteering opportunities, email: Florida@joniandfriends.orgSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's program, Operation Underground Railroad founder Tim Ballard sues for defamation after six women accuse him of sexual assault. We'll have details. And, MinistryWatch reporter Marci Seither visits Joni & Friends in Tennessee as the ministry ships off hundreds of donated wheelchairs. They head to a prison, where inmates are repairing the equipment, even as they work to repair their own lives. Also, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference announces the launch of new health initiatives, including mental health and financial health. We'll take a look. But first, relatives and scholars of Dietrich Bonhoeffer have issued a warning to Eric Metaxas and others, accusing them of misusing his legacy for political reasons. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Bob Smietana, Kim Roberts, Marci Seither, Aleja Hertzler-McCain, and Brittany Smith. Until next time, may God bless you. MANUSCRIPT FIRST SEGMENT Warren: Hello everybody. I'm Warren Smith, coming to you this week from our nation's capital, Washington, DC. Natasha: And I'm Natasha Cowden, coming to you from Denver, Colorado. And we'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Natasha: But first, relatives and scholars of Dietrich Bonhoeffer have issued a warning to Eric Metaxas and others, accusing them of misusing his legacy for political reasons. Warren: In recent years, author and radio host Eric Metaxas and other conservative Christian supporters of Donald Trump have compared themselves to the famed German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer — who was put to death, in part, for participating in a plan to assassinate Adolph Hitler. In a recent interview on Flashpoint, a Christian television talk show on the Victory network, both Metaxas — author of a bestselling biography of Bonhoeffer — and the show's host called the current election a “Bonhoeffer moment” and urged Christians to rise up and oppose evil. His newest book, “Religionless Christianity” — a phrase used by Bonhoeffer — describes America's current politics as a spiritual war and sign of the end times. Natasha: A group of Bonhoeffer scholars — and the theologian's descendants — have had enough. Warren: In a statement issued Friday (Oct. 18) members of the International Bonhoeffer Society called on Metaxas and others to stop comparing the current election to the rise of the Nazis. The statement, in particular, called out Metaxas for social media posts featuring a gun and a Bible and his support of Jan. 6 rioters. “This portrayal glorifies violence and draws inappropriate analogies between our political system and that of Nazi Germany,” the scholars said in a statement, which has been signed by more than 800 Bonhoeffer scholars and other Christian leaders. Natasha: What prompted the statement? Warren: In part by the upcoming release of a new Bonhoeffer biopic, which will be out in theaters in late November. One of the posters for the film shows Bonhoeffer with a gun, and a trailer for the film shows his involvement in the plot to kill Hitler. Some of the early social media tweets about the film included messages about the “battle against tyranny” and a line from the trailer,

Joni and Friends team member Wilame Leal Silva and his wife Erica Leal were overjoyed to hear they were pregnant with their second child. Then doctors gave a diagnosis that sent them reeling. Their son, they were told, had trisomy 13, a condition likely to end the baby's life soon after birth. Even if Daniel survived, doctors said, he would be severely disabled and not live long. Grieved facing the loss of their son—and pressured to terminate the pregnancy—Wilame and Erica experienced disability in a new way. And while their son—to doctors' amazement—was born without a disability, Wilame and Erica live with lasting deep empathy for families living with disability. Wilame joins the podcast to tell his family's story, and share how God led him into disability ministry. On call around the clock, often without pay, caregivers can experience discouragement and burnout. Rebekah Dowhy knows the rigors of caregiving. She joins the podcast to offer help and hope to caregivers, and the communities called to support them.“God placed the idea of the Caregiving Support Network on my heart when I was still caring for Mom around 2015. When an unexpected disability or disease turns your life on end, how do you journey through each day without letting fear, depression, or discouragement overtake you? Dr. Jean Sutherland can answer this question from personal experience; she has leaned on the Lord through three bouts of aggressive cancer (and treatments) that have significantly altered her life, abilities, appearance, and even the way she eats and speaks. Dr. Sutherland joins the podcast to share how God has sustained her through suffering and taught her to rely on his strength in her weakness. Like Dr. Sutherland, Joni often leans on Scripture and hymns during long, difficult nights. She shares some of her favorites in her book Songs of Suffering. If you or a loved one needs encouragement this season, Songs of Suffering will help you find faith, peace, and comfort in the fight.Listen to Dr. Jean's Spotify Playlist of Hymns KEY QUESTIONS:When unexpected difficulties come do you fall into fear, depression, or discouragement? How can you trust God in your weakness today? How might God work through you to show himself to others? Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.” Psalm 40:1–3“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
