Robert Guffey joins us to discuss his new fiction book "Bela Lugosi's Dead". We speak to Robert about some of the themes in the book and his fascination with the character and life of Bela Lugosi especially dealing with Lugosi's relationship with Manly P. Hall and his interest esoteriscsm. We also speak to Robert about his continuing series in Evergreen Review dealing with Qanon and the run up to the January 6th insurrection at the capital and how it was influenced by these ideas. Chris & Kelsey *would* have been watching graduation movies this week, but since there seem to be no ceremonies this year, we’ll watch teenagers have parties they shouldn't be having instead! The Classic Film: Night of the Demons (1988) "Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell” (IMDb.com). This B-movie was surprisingly fun, despite (or because of?) a complete lack of commitment to lore or reason. The Modern Film: Night of the Demons (2009) "A group of kids go to a Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons” (IMDb.com). Same thing; different day. This second attempt added some promising lore, but it has the absolute stank of post-2000 horror remake all over it. Sometimes you just have to go with the hits. I could have tortured you with their rendition of "Be My Baby" but I like you too much. CW: Sexual Assault, Suicide It’s Sexy Vampire(ish) Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey watch a lot of beautiful people do really violent things! Thanks to listener The Chickapedia for the recommendations! The Classic Film: The Hunger (1983) "A love triangle develops between a beautiful yet dangerous vampire, her cellist companion, and a gerontologist” (IMDb.com). We know that description sounds odd, but it’s a strangely accurate description of what amounts to one big montage of a film. The twist on the vampire trope is fascinating, but is it more style than substance? The Modern Film: Jennifer’s Body (2009) "A newly possessed high school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?” (IMDb.com). This fantasy story about realistic young women was written by the same screenwriter that did Juno, but don’t let that dissuade you from catching this kick-ass story if you passed it up a decade ago. Kevin Haskins's spare, hypnotic style laid the foundation for goth luminaries, Bauhaus. He tells Joe about: growing up in Northampton; seeing bands like The Who and Led Zeppelin; how the burgeoning punk scene gave him confidence to pursue music; playing the now-classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead" for the first time; the sense of devastation he experienced after the breakup of Bauhaus; working with subsequent bands such as Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets; and passing on his love of music to his children. Check out the new Bauhaus release "The Bela Session" out this Friday, 11/23.
