From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, May 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. 'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed Saint Joseph Catholic Church has embarked on a significant yet bittersweet demolition project that involved tearing down its historic rectory in Marietta. Nearly two centuries of history are being torn down as the rectory undergoes demolition due to severe safety concerns. Monsignor John Walsh highlighted that mold, asbestos, and lead had made the rectory unsafe for its residents and visitors. The damage, which dates back to Christmas Day 2022, was caused by a burst pipe that led to extensive water damage, forcing priests to relocate. Despite efforts from Cobb Landmarks to preserve the historical Sugar Hill House portion, the church decided to demolish the entire rectory. Built in 1852 and used as a field hospital during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the rectory holds deep historical significance. Facing over $2 million in restoration costs, the church chose to build a new rectory for about $1.2 million instead. While the decision was difficult, Monsignor Walsh emphasized that safety was paramount. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we take a look an activist group called MOVE, and how they were eventually assaulted, murdered, and bombed by Philadelphia police via helicopter in the 80s. MOVE started out as a strange group that people considered one part Black Panthers and one part green-loving hippies. They fought for social justice and justice for all living beings, black, white, animal, you name it. But they were loud, and they swore through megaphones, and they had weapons. Some say they were an innocent activist group who was persecuted by the police. Others say they were a dangerous cult, and that the Philly police pulled a Waco on them. Description: The recent demolition of a $24 million historic home by Astros owner Jim Crane renewed conversations about the preservation of the iconic River Oaks neighborhood. Since its founding in the 1920s, the high-income Houston enclave became a quiet retreat from the rest of the city where the wealthy invested in building beautiful, architecturally significant homes. One by one though, many of these historic mansions are getting demolished and replaced with more modern designs. A handful of owners have renovated and preserved some vintage houses, but at great cost and effort. In this episode of Looped In, co-hosts Marissa Luck and Rebecca Schuetz talk with architectural reporter Diane Cowen about Crane's home, another $13.5 million mansion previously owned by billionaire Fayez Sarofim and why some preservationists are wary about changes underway in River Oaks. Journal of Biophilic Design

As many of our listeners know, the concept of Biophilic Design brings our contact with nature closer into our lives in the built environment, whether that's at home, work, hospitals, schools or our cities. In our podcasts we speak to people whose life's work has been to design and work with nature and also to understand more deeply how and why our connection with nature is so profound and why it has the positive impact it has on us. The underlying factor is our inheritance from our ancestors, how for hundreds of thousands of years we lived outside, close to nature. We are still dependent on nature for our food, air, water, life. In this podcast we speak with Mary Reynolds Thompson, founder of Live Your Wild Soul Story, and who is an award-winning author, internationally recognized speaker, and a pioneer in the spiritual ecology movement, her focus is on the transformative power of landscape archetypes and nature metaphors to reveal our true purpose and right relationship with the planet. We discuss how the way we are living now alienates us from real life, from the living planet, from each other, and from our own authenticity. It's not just a philosophy, it's proven that time in nature really heals you emotionally, psychologically, and physically, the effects are lasting – it has an accumulative benefit, extending into the stresses of the week. Therefore, simply put, the more connected we are to nature the happier we are. “It's an unfolding comfort, we feel the warmth or cold of the earth, almost like the heartbeat of the mother, security and happiness. For all human history we lived outside, it's part of our lineage, and we don't just cut it off. We don't lose that desire.” Mary goes on to describe a concept, Shadow wild – this disconnection which leaves such a gaping chasm that we tend to want to fill it with whatever is at hand because we want to feel alive (Joseph Campbell, the mythologist said – more than anything humans want to feel alive, and most of us feel alive when we are outside in the natural world. We are part of the earth's 4.5-billion-year history, everything that comprises us was there even before the big bang. There is a deep knowing that changes how we feel about ourselves, we are not inconsequential, we matter, we are matter, we have meaning. Mary takes this one step further in her practice, she helps people reconnect with themselves and this realisation is part of the beginning of this return to our passion for what we want to do. For her landscapes are archetypes, and they are inside us, we emerged out of these places. Have a listen to the different archetypes which Mary describes. For instance if we are constantly mountain woman or man, there are times in our life when we need water, or desert. As Designers, I imagine some would find this interesting, as we go on to discuss how we could take an office and create zones, creating spaces that resonate with different elements to help users of a space work through a project. The desert is calm and allows thinking time, the forest is an imagining space where we follow threads, we allow our passion to come into its own with the ocean, we manifest on mountains and then we take to the grasslands to share and serve the community, our purpose. Finally, we talk about the environment. Nature and what we're doing to nature mirrors what we are doing to our own psyche and souls. Razed forest is devastating, in many ways we are felling the most fecund creative aspects within ourselves as we do it, we are cutting down diversity, creativity, and rootedness. What we are doing to the earth is not unrelated to what we are doing to our psyches and souls. We as humans have a deep kinship with all of life. We are not just hurting the planet we are hurting ourselves in very profound ways.Did you know our NEW printed and eBook journal is out now https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/journal-of-biophilic-design-1 Please register for our newsletter https://mailchi.mp/4001fc945c4f/untitled-page and view previous podcasts with images here too: https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/podcasts-journal-of-biophilic-design.Credits: with thanks to George Harvey Audio Production for the calming biophilic soundscape that backs all our podcasts. We have a special Christmas event. Our season one finale is with actors Holly Robinson Peete and Nik Sanchez. They star in the new hit Hallmark Film: Our Christmas Journey. We sit down and talk about what it means to be a family around someone with autism. This move shows the love and truth one such family goes through in raising a son with autism. This is near to our hearts as both Ben and Dan relate to different sides of this very story. To find more about the film : https://www.hallmarkmoviesandmysterie... More on holly As a single mom and her teenaged son with autism come to a crossroad during Christmas, she must learn to let go so he can flourish as she finds her own heart healing in unexpected ways. Starring Holly Robinson Peete, Lyriq Bent and Nik Sanchez. Actress, author, talk show host, activist and philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete has been touched by the entertainment industry almost of her life. Her career as an actress dates back more than three decades and has led her to becoming a voice for her father, her son and her community. She was recently seen at the center of Hallmark Channel's new and very first primetime family docu-series, “Meet the Peetes,” which returned for its second season in February 2019. Peete also starred in five “Morning Show Mysteries” originals for Hallmark Mysteries & Movies, and recently co-starred in the Hallmark original movie “Christmas in Evergreen: Letters to Santa.” Robinson Peete had her first experience in front of the camera at the age of four when she appeared on television opposite her father, Matthew Robinson, who served as a producer and portrayed the original beloved character of Gordon on the iconic children's program “Sesame Street.” While she knew even at that young age her calling was to be an actress, Robinson Peete opted to lead a typical childhood rather than searching to be the next child star. In 1997, Robinson Peete and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, formed the HollyRod Foundation, inspired by her father's courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, with the mission to help improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson's. Then in 2005, inspired by their eldest son's autism diagnosis, HollyRod Foundation's mission expanded to provide support and resources to those affected by an autism diagnosis. Through the HollyRod Foundation and her family's personal experiences, Robinson Peete has become one of the most trusted advocates for consistent and reliable education, outreach and support for both Parkinson's and autism. Her autism advocacy also extends to her book co-written with daughter, Ryan Elizabeth Peete, entitled My Brother Charlie (Scholastic): a bestselling, NAACP Image Award-winning children's book about autism from the sibling's perspective. With her first book Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game: A Women's Guide to Loving Pro Football (2005, Rodale), Robinson Peete won the 2006 Quill Literacy Award. The follow-up to the children's book entitled Same But Different - Teen Life On The Autism Express –- which was co-authored by her twins Ryan Elizabeth & RJ – was released in spring 2016. More on the rising star Nik Sanchez Nik Sanchez is a budding young actor who just shot a lead role in Boris Kodjoe's upcoming film Safe Space opposite Nicole Ari Parker.
