Michael Gravitt has an amazing ability to be aware of his surroundings. It’s a necessity for him, you can learn a lot from this thoughtful conversation. Michael Gravitt has been legally blind since birth due to a degenerative eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa (or, RP for short). When he was younger he could read computer screens and regular print by simply placing his face in a book, and could see well enough to take photos, see folks up close, and get around without a dog or cane. Now, Michael uses special software on his computer called JAWS and also use voice-over on the iPhone, both allowing me to listen instead of looking at the screen. He has a beautiful guide dog Lola. Mike is originally from South Boston, Virginia, but have resided in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since early 1998. Mike is a manager with Bender Consulting Services works on-site in Bayer Corporation's Communications Technology Group. There is a talented and dependable pipeline of talent of people with disabilities wanting to enter the workforce and Joyce Bender, President and CEO of Bender Consulting Services, has built her career on over 30 years of executive search experience, placing this talent in formative jobs. Joyce began her career in 1979 as a search consultant, and in 1988, founded Bender and Associates International, Inc., an executive search firm specializing in technology and management search. In 1985, Joyce had a life-threatening accident due to epilepsy that caused a cerebral hemorrhage that required subsequent brain surgery. This accident left Joyce with a 60 percent hearing loss in one ear and a realization that she had epilepsy. As a result of her personal experience, she developed a passion for helping people with disabilities secure employment. Joyce welcomes Gerald Homme, chairman of the “Bender Lead On Team” and Ginny Miller, mother of the late, Sam Miller to the show. Based on Facebook, the Bender Lead On Team is a group of people who help Bender lead the charge to spread the news of employment and empowerment for people with disabilities. Working in high schools and on college campuses, members encourage young people with disabilities to set goals that align with competitive career opportunities. It also provides a forum for young people with disabilities to get support from their peers if they are being bullied, and provide encouragement to others who are being bullied. Gerald will discuss this group in depth, and his duties as chair. He will also share his personal experience having been bullied in high school, while living with his learning disability. Ginny Miller will reflect on her late son's life and share his struggle with being bullied. Ginny will also share what it means to her to have Bender's “Sam Miller Award” named after her son. The Sam Miller Award was established in 2012 by the Bender Consulting Services' “Bender Lead-On Team” to honor the memory of Sam, who was a dedicated member of the Bender Lead-On Team; Sam was himself a victim of bullying and died by suicide in 2011. Before his death, Sam supported other young people with disabilities and fought for justice for all people who faced bullying and other forms of discrimination.

Also discussed will be the impact that the class has had on the self esteem of students with disabilities. Joyce welcomes Diane DuFour-Gaudio, who is affiliated with the Beaver Valley intermediate Unit, holding various positions over the past 30 years, from instructor to her current position as Transition Consultant for the Beaver County School Districts. Also on the show will be Nathan Bowden, a sophomore with the Hopewell School District in Pittsburgh, PA. Ms. DuFour-Gaudio and Mr. Bowden will discuss their work to prevent bullying among youth in our schools. In response to the bullying crisis occurring among youth, Ms. DuFour-Gaudio, is collaborating with Bender Consulting Services, and the Beaver County Schools to educate students on how to deal with bullying. She has collaborated with Bender to create a county-wide anti-bullying program to stop bullying. The program is known as the Bender Lead-On Anti-Bullying Teams and empowers youth to stand up against bullying. Nathan Bowden will discuss his independent Facebook page , Raise awareness of Bullycide, to empower youth to stand up against bullying.
