Award-winning documentarian Dawn Porter talks about bringing journalistic principles and standards to documentary filmmaking and treating documentary subjects as collaborators and partners rather than “subjects.” We also discuss the need to keep having the difficult conversations needed to keep up with the changing documentary landscape. We also talk about how she got into the business by way of another profession, and discuss one of my favorites of her films, Gideon's Army, which premiered at Sundance and was nominated for both the Independent Spirit Award for Best Doc and an Emmy.Dawn's 2023 film, The Lady Bird Diaries was called “mesmerizing” and “elegant” by The Guardian. She is also known for the HBO film Trapped, about the last abortion providers in Mississippi, as well as films about Civil Rights icon John Lewis and the Tulsa race massacre of 1921. It's Super Bowl weekend for cinephiles! The 2022 Academy Awards are tonight, putting an end to another unusual awards season. Everything has been so altered by the pandemic that I don't know if it'll ever feel the same again. But no matter what, it's always going to be fun trying to predict the winners, and the more unpredictable they are, the more fun it is.And this year is definitely one that I doubt anyone has completely figured out. A few curveballs have been thrown into the mix, especially in the Best Picture race. We have the ultimate “head vs. heart” scenario in The Power of the Dog vs. CODA, while the astonishing film Flee defies description to such a degree that it could win Best Doc, Best Animated Feature, and Best International Feature. A couple of the Actor races appear to be settled, but the others considerably less so.In short, I'm expecting some surprises tonight.I don't pretend to be an awards expert. There's no encyclopedic knowledge coming out of this brain. It's just me, a guy who loves movies and likes pickin' winners.Anyway, check out my final Oscar predictions below. They were recorded yesterday so excuse me if the timing is a bit off.

Was I productive today? Was I nourished today? These two questions are not mutually exclusive. As the great Rumi once said, “Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” Recalibrating how we evaluate our days opens up an important discussion around what really is the point of life? Are we just numbers on a balance sheet? Is our value to society measured in dollars and cents? These questions and more come up in our conversation today with filmmaker and climate action communicator Sanjana Sekhar. Sanjana's unique upbringing has unsurprisingly led her down a path centered around healing, applying age-old wisdom and sharing stories that uplift communities typically not represented in the outdoor community. When you think about outdoor adventure films, jaw-dropping Jeremy Jones snowboard films, Jimmy Chin climbing films and others are the first to come to mind. Two years ago, Dawn Wall and Free Solo shared the mainstream stage (with Free Solo winning the Oscar for Best Doc) and further elevated climbing in popular culture. But only a few of us are extreme professional athletes. Sanjana and her talented team at The Brave Space Project are soon to be premiering their film, Expedition Reclamation; the story of 12 BIPOC women connecting and healing through outdoor recreation aims redefine 'outdoorsy' and share nature's potential for healing, finding identity, and building community.  You can check out the trailer and stay up to date through the film's website and by following Sanjana on Instagram. As always, we are excited to hear your feedback- a 5 star review on your podcast platform of choice goes a LONG ways, and is one way you can contribute to what we're doing here at the Symphony :)
