Typically, growth happens incrementally. Over time, small steps begin to add up in a big way. If your max squat is 225 pounds today, chances are you won't squat 315 tomorrow. But when it comes to the mind, do the same limitations exist? Today, Kyle shares a brief story about a new initiative, letting go of stress, altogether. This episode is thanks to Clarence and Tona. The double-edged sword of life returns, this time in the form of how you think about and communicate your perspectives, beliefs and feelings. The question Kyle and Matthew attempt to answer with this one is: how can you hold strong, healthy convictions and stand for the things you believe in, knowing that 100% "certainty" is often a farce, and that we have to accept some level of uncertainty in order to move through life? It's a fun one and we hope it sparks some good thoughts. Wilmer Arias was shot through the neck in a rural and impoverished area of northern Guatemala when he was 9 years old. He wandered away from his grandparents house, where he lived with his brother and sister, to chase after a deer. A hunter's bullet intended for the deer, struck Wilmer instead. He spent two and a half months in a coma in a hospital in Guatemala city, and woke up in a world unfamiliar to the one he had known; now paralyzed from the waist down. Abandoned by his mother and father at a young age, Wilmer had only the support of his grandparents, who were getting old themselves and quickly realized they did not have the ability to support Wilmers needs given his new physical condition. With no money to keep up with hospital bills, they found an orphanage called Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos; a catholic organization that had the ability to help. 10 hours away from their life in Peten, along with his brother and sister, this orphanage became Wilmer's new home. Confused, angry, and completely dependent on others, Wilmer struggled through his adolescent years. He became accustomed to a life of difficulty; constant health complications, trips to the hospital, and feeling alienated from his peers because of his condition. He saw no opportunity to improve his life, and Wilmer became ashamed of who he was. When he was 18 he began to realize the power of his own mind. He credits the book 'Think and Grow Rich,' which was given to him as a gift, for his initial breakthrough. He learned that accepting himself as he was, and giving up were two completely different things, and his life began to change. He became obsessed with books, and applied himself to learning, finding strength for his own life through the wisdom of others. Combining self discipline with an eagerness to learn, Wilmer set goals, developed principles, and began taking giant strides in his life. He stopped looking for external validation and acceptance from others and focused more on his internal environment. By 29, he was working in public relations and partnerships for the orphanage, studying business in University, and simultaneously earning a masters in digital marketing. All the while putting together a business plan for a wellness center that is his dream to eventually open up with his brother. He began speaking all over the world, inspiring people with his story everywhere he went. Wilmer's life had taken a complete 180, he had made peace with his own life, and actualized the power of his own mind. He had found an upward trajectory for his life that inspired everyone he came in contact with. During this time, a lingering complication from his childhood accident became a life threatening issue, and Wilmer was told by doctors he had less than 2 years to live. The operation Wilmer needed had never been attempted in medical history, and Wilmer was turned away by as many hospitals as they contacted. Refusing to give up the fight, Wilmer began to manifest a future for himself despite his most recent complication. He remained positive and focused on his attitude, thoughts, and the energy he was putting out into the world, as he searched for an answer to his life's most recent curveball. We hope this episode brings a new perspective or at least makes you think about the power of the mind. How hard should you work? Matthew and Kyle discuss how hard work can be a doubled edged sword. Too much can leave you burned out or feeling like you're on the hamster wheel, while not enough ______ (hard work, discipline, commitment, focus) will most definitely lead to a bad outcome. But is it as simple as how hard you work? If it is, then explain how the entrepreneur building a business around his/her passions working 70 hour weeks experiences more joy and satisfaction than someone who works 25 hours doing something they don't enjoy. By no means is this episode intended to prescribe a specific work ethic. Everyone has different goals. But if you do want to excel, one thing is certain: your work ethic needs match your ambition. What lessons do sports and more broadly, competition (it could be chess, go-karting, climbing, or video games) teach that can be applied to other areas of life? “Sport, what it can do when it works, is it can show you that you can go beyond what you thought your limits were. And you also get to see what the people around you are really made of when there's no more energy in the brain or the nervous system to cultivate a persona - you can really know, do they show up when it seems like there's no hope?” - Kyle KinsburyHope you enjoy the episode. As another year comes to an end, self reflection and goal setting starts to creep back into people's minds. In this week's episode, Matthew shares some recent reflections and quotes from his daily journal that can help listeners reflect on their own progress over the last year. What are some of the things you've grown in this past year? What are some of the things you want to do better? Matthew discusses how putting things down into a journal can help you collect your thoughts, map out where you are, and where you're trying to go.
Who are you when no one's looking? What is more important - how you appear to other people? Or how you feel about yourself? Spending time alone in self reflection is an important piece of growing as a human being. Matthew and Kyle are joined this week by editor and collaborator Kid Brian to discuss the importance of working on the side of yourself that no one sees. How do you spend your time when it's only you? Is the message you're projecting to the outside world different from what's going on inside your head? Are you comfortable spending time alone with your thoughts? External validation can be fleeting and hollow. When we figure out how to become intrinsically validated through aligning our actions with our values, we create all the motivation we need to keep living happily from an authentic place. How you appear to others will never quite be the full picture. That's why you are the only judge that really matters. Can you look yourself in the eye, knowing all your deepest truths, and feel good about how you're showing up in the world? If not, what needs to change?
There are a few questions you can ask yourself to get into a reflective or introspective mindset. Matthew and Kyle dig into the question and open up about their current challenges. Ultimately we're all at different stages, circumstances and with different goals... so there won't be a one-size fits all solution. But if we really listen to our intuition and create the environment necessary for self-reflection, we can avoid falling into ruts and bad habits. What are you working on personally right now? When you ask yourself this question what are the top 2-3 things that come up? We would genuinely LOVE to hear your responses. There's no doubt, as 2021 comes to a close, that we are living through unprecedented times. For 4 years of the Trump presidency and now coming up on 2 years of a pandemic, the public has been victim to an-all out information war. Information channels from corporate media to social media push a narrative that political polarization is a given- never in history have we seen such division, blah, blah, blah... And it's partially true. Fear is a popular tool for persuasion. However, face-to-face, 1 on 1 communication often yields a conflicting observation. Anecdotally at least, we at the Symphony Co. have been having productive, open-minded conversations on the regular. We've noticed people becoming more interested and engaged- more awake than ever before. So today, we want to share an alternative view on this so-called polarization. Triggered specifically by the Rich Roll Podcast with Andrew Yang (recommended listening), Kyle and Matthew share their perspectives on this topic. And to be clear, this isn't a disagreement or claim that Rich or Andrew or anyone else for that matter is wrong... it's just another viewpoint on the situation. Hope you enjoy :)

It's easy to talk yourself out of something. There's always someone more qualified on paper. Self doubt creeps in, and lack of experience convinces you not to go for it. This week's episode talks about the benefit of throwing yourself into the fire. Kyle talks about his recent experience throwing himself into the fire of running sound for a film crew. Matthew discusses the unquestionable value that's been added to his life from throwing himself into new experiences. What works for me may not work for you, but here are 3 ways you increase your productivity so you can make time for what really matters most. 1. Pomodoro technique2. Game-ify the work3. Structure the day to reduce frictionAlthough it's not mentioned in the show, it's worth mentioning #4... outer accountability (via Gretchen Rubin). If you are someone who never misses a deadline at work, always has time for other people but can't seem to finish the passion project or the thing you set out to do... then outer accountability is the solution. Set up constraints and structure to make sure you get your stuff done!
"Above all else, be kind." -Aldous Huxley This week's episode is a conversation about death. When we lose someone we love, or have a near death experience of our own, we immediately think of our own lives in a different context. We awaken to how precious and fragile life truly is. But why does it take such strenuous circumstances for us to come to this realization? Are there ways we can incorporate this perspective into our day to day life even when things are going well? Kyle and Matthew share stories from close encounters with death, and how it ultimately changed their outlook on life. Lots of love being sent to Roddy Hanson this week, as he unintentionally became the inspiration for this episode with a health scare of his own. Roddy is doing well and recovering in the hospital, but he reminded us of how quickly things can change, and why we should never miss an opportunity to be kind, and show gratitude for everything we have in this beautiful life. What would it mean for you to take a step toward being the person you want to be? What actions would it involve? What dollar amount would it take? What is standing between you and achieving what you want? This week's episode covers the concept of investing in yourself. Matthew and Kyle discuss the different ways they have invested in themselves over the last few years and the opportunities that have come as a result. Spending time daily, weekly, and yearly investing in yourself can allow you to garner the skills, qualities, and mindset necessary to achieve the future that you want. What does it mean to invest in yourself? It means making your own personal advancement a priority. Reading, writing, learning, organizing ideas and turning them into tangible realities, exercising. Participating in any activity that will sharpen and advance your capabilities as a human being is investing in yourself. Unlike how it can play out in the stock market, you play a major role in the trajectory of this investment. Our Greatest Fear Quote: https://explorersfoundation.org/glyphery/122.html
With any challenge in life, mental or physical, your ability to overcome and move forward is determined by your ability to direct your thoughts. Feeling stuck or unmotivated? Give this episode a listen. With any occupation, there will inevitably come a time where you feel like your wheels are spinning, but you're going nowhere. No job, career, or craft is devoid of some routine or monotony that will ware on us. This episode is all about how to change your mindset and get yourself out of these ruts. Kyle discusses how intentionally infusing adventure into the day can massively change your energy levels and perspective - hiking, biking, taking a walk, giving yourself a change of scenery. It can even be as simple as checking out a new restaurant, calling a friend you haven't talked to in a while, meditating, reading, or playing music. Matthew talks about how to reframe the way you think about time, the compound effect of chipping away at something a little bit at a time, and how to find flow in any daily activity. Taking care of your mindset is a crucial piece of this practice - negative thoughts tend to remain at bay when we have a curious, optimistic, and grateful mindset.
