This week we continue following Night Demon on their epic North American trek supporting King Diamond and Overkill in fall 2024. The narrative resumes with a rare appearance in Indianapolis. Band and crew describe the benefits and pitfalls of performing at ornate old theaters that were not designed for 21st century heavy metal productions. You will learn how Night Demon paid tribute to the late, great Paul Di'Anno at this show, and will hear exclusive details about a recording session and potential future single release. From there, the tour proceeded to Louisville, with visits from friends in Savage Master and chiropractic care courtesy of the Rock Doc. As always, we bring you live clips from the performances and behind-the-scenes recollections of how each show went down.LINKSOld National Centre - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_National_CentreMagnetic Eye Records -https://magneticeyerecords.bandcamp.com/Louisville Palace -https://www.louisvillepalace.com/ Listen at nightdemon.net/podcast or anywhere you listen to podcasts! It's playtime! Pop Screen is starting a themed month on "autobiopics" - films where pop stars play themselves, but in a different context to the standard rock doc. The nearest we'll get to documentary is this film by Morgan Neville, which sees Pharrell Williams talk about his incredible career and range of star collaborators - Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z and more - through the medium of, er, Lego.Joining regular host Graham, Mark Harrison talks about the history of "brickfilms", the Lego franchise's move from studio to studio, and the vexed question of whether 'Happy' is annoying or not. We also talk about the film's insight into creativity, the other Pharrell Williams movie directed by Michel Gondry that you'll never see, and, of course, try to imagine what he thought he was doing with that bloody hat. It's the podcast of the summer! Our Patreon brings all the boys to the yard, and no wonder - we've just launched Graham and Mark Cunliffe's exclusive new arts and culture podcast The Arts Hole there. You'll find that along with Patreon exclusive episodes of this show - listen to the end to find out what's next - written articles about The Twilight Zone and Doctor Who, and much more. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to find out more.

We're showing our age with the hope that is in 80's Rock Docs.On this episode we are seeing the collision of two of our biggest passions; film restoration and 80's Pop Culture Rock Docs. It's time for 'The Long Way Home'.From the late Michael Apted, and restored from the only existing 16mm print, supervised by producer Steven Lawrence and editor Susanne Rostock. 'The Long Way Home: Remastered and Expanded (2026) is a revealing, rollicking portrait of the Soviet underground rock legend Boris Grebenshchikov, who became the first to record in the West during the early, optimistic days of Glasnost. The film features Boris Grebenshchikov, Dave Stewart and members of legendary Russian rock band Aquarium, with special appearances by Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, Ray Cooper, Crosby, Stills & Nash and many more.Playing this coming Wednesday at To Save and Project: The 22nd MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation this is an event that is a must see if you're in New York.We got to talk with producer Steven Lawrence about restoring this story, the additional epilogue he shot with Boris, working with Michael Apted, this films place in Rock Doc lore and so very much more....

In 1983, Cameron Crowe — still early in his career — picked up a camera and quietly captured something incredible. The result? A grainy, gutsy, joy-fueled snapshot of a band still hungry, and still trying to figuring it all out. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in their hungry years. MTV aired it once in the middle of the night, then shelved it for being too raw.Now it's restored, with 20 extra minutes, There's no script, no polish — just raw moments, backstage vibes, late-night jam sessions. Greg kicks things off this week with a recap of the The Loman Brothers show at Bossa Bistro this past weekend in a 'Tales from the Concert.' Jay and Nick were in attendance and share their thoughts. If you missed it, it was an incredible show, but you can watch a solid recap of the performance over on Sandi Redman's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knKHDXUYzvESong: The Loman Brothers - “Actual Proof” (Herbie Hancock)Jay watched the Yacht Rock Doc that Greg covered last week and he loved it. YouTube perrsonality, multi-instrumentalist and music educator Rick Beato watch it too, and he hated it. Jay takes us down to Hot Topical to discuss.Song: Sam Fender - “People Watching”The Drummers of Frank Zappa was a special released on Drum Channel over 16 years ago, but it's new to Nick! He recaps the conversations had by Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson, Ralph Humphrey and Ruth Underwood about their time playing with the legendary composer. In this episode, we set sail on smooth waters with a deep dive into HBO Max's yacht rock documentary. We ask the hard-hitting question: Did MTV kill yacht rock? While we didn't settle on a definitive Mount Rushmore of yacht rock legends, we discuss some major contenders like Michael McDonald, Toto, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross.Mike joins us for a hilarious “Misheard Lyric Minute,” where we unravel some of the most misunderstood lines from classic tracks. Plus, we play a fun round of “Hot Yacht Rock or Yuck, Not Rock,” introducing two songs to determine if they have what it takes to glide into the yacht rock canon.Lastly, we pay tribute to baseball legend Rickey Henderson, reflecting on his incredible career, record-breaking accolades, and the lasting legacy he left on the game.Grab your captain's hat and join us for a voyage filled with smooth tunes and heartfelt tributes!Send us a voicemail at:https://www.speakpipe.com/The70sVsThe80s
Happy New Year! Nick kicks things off with Three For Thursday: 2024 Albums of the Year Edition. We've heard songs from these albums over the past year, but Nick believes they're the cream of the crop in 2024.Songs:Ghost Note - “Where's Danny?”Vampire Weekend - “Mary Boone”Plantoid - “Insomniac (Don't Worry)”Greg brings us up to speed on a documentary he's recommending we all watch over the holiday break. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary can be found on Max and recounts the rise in popularity of the, later dubbed, yacht rock genre that emerged from the west coast in the late 70s.Song: Doobie Brothers - “What a Fool Believes”Jay wraps the week (and the year) with a fantastic article in the Jan 2025 Harpers Magazine titled “The Ghosts in the Machine” [Harpers Magazine]. The article reports Spotify's internal program aimed at filling ‘background music' playlists with licensed sound-alike content that costs much less that the royalties paid to streaming artists. It re-raises a familiar question on the show, can the economics of the music industry ever result in a system that benefits and is fair to its artists.Song: Frank Zappa - “Andy” (checkout Tyler Bartrem's video about this song if you're interested -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Jq0DX0bfc )

Neil Ratner, MD, has played remarkably divergent roles in his life, initially as a rock-and-roll drummer and staging entrepreneur, working with the likes of Edgar Winter and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. But he always had an interest in medicine, so eventually he ditched his successful rock career and went to medical school, later becoming an anesthesiologist who embraced the then-novel concept of delivering non-OR anesthesia, which he helped pioneer. It was through his work as an anesthesiologist for a plastic surgeon that he ended up meeting Michael Jackson, of all people, who immediately liked Dr. Ratner and his rock-and-roll roots. His rock music and medicine careers enjoyed some precipitous highs but also significant lows, all of which he candidly details in his book “Rock Doc.”Perhaps surprisingly, however, our interview with Dr. Ratner is mostly not about his rock-and-roll past or his work doing non-OR anesthesiology, but instead about what he is up to today: serving as a kind of public health announcer for a radio station in, fittingly, Woodstock, N.Y. His work interpreting medical news—particularly as it relates to COVID-19—for the station (WDST; 100.1 MHz) has made a difference in the public's understanding of the complicated issues brought about by the pandemic.

This episode was first featured on our Patreon! This is my favorite episode of this seven part series for obvious reasons. It covers Nirvana and also introduced me to a bunch of other bands as well. Featuring one of my favorite people in music, Henry Rollins who gives his takes on the scene in the 80s. We hear from the producers on the construction of the songs, the fame aspect and pressures, and end on a somber note.Watch the episode: https://bit.ly/3ce8DGaThe rise of alternative rock in the USA. From its early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like R.E.M., The Pixies and Hüsker Dü. The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist whose triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.I made a playlist of the songs featured in the episode: https://spoti.fi/3qJEv9F----Get OVER 70 BONUS episodes on 90s & 00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more movies...) and to support the show, join the PATREON for $5 a month! www.patreon.com/fashiongrungeHosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactoryFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

When you think guitar gods, names like Hendrix, Frehley, Van Halen, Clapton, Iommi all come to mind, but one name in a very limited window of time will always stick out and that man was named, Randy Rhoads. In just a 5 year window, Randy Rhoads began his journey to guitar god with Quiet Riot, leading him to join Ozzy Osbourne on his first solo venture with Blizzard of Ozz. Sadly, at 25 years old, Rhoads lost his life in a tragic plane crash that left the entire music industry numb. Now, 40 years since his passing, director Andre Relis and rock legend, Tracii Guns (who narrates the documentary) revisit the life and times of Randy Rhoads, a musical prodigy from Southern California that within a few months was better than his own music teacher. In less than 90 minutes, Relis humanizes Rhoads who has been deified in the metal community and continues to live on in our hearts, minds and souls. If you can get your hands on an early release of Blizzard of Ozz or the first two Quiet Riot albums, you can hear the intricacies of Rhoads' musicality within each song. During our interview, I told Guns that I was terrified when initially finding out that he was the narrator, because although he is an incredible musician and vocalist, that does not always translate to voice over, but to my delight and everyone else's Tracii Guns knocked it out of the park and just like any L.A. Guns show, will leave the audience wanting to hear more! 'Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon' Releasing on VOD, Friday, May 6, 2022. Official Synopsis: Randy Rhoads, the legendary guitarist known for his unmatchable guitar riffs, re-shaped rock'n'roll as the lead guitarist for Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne. After forming Quiet Riot with bandmates Kelly Garni, Drew Forsyth, and Kevin DuBrow in the 70s, the band quickly became one of the most popular acts in the Los Angeles club circuit. However, their music failed to land them a legitimate record deal. After playing with Quiet Riot for over 10 years, Randy received an opportunity to be the lead guitarist for former Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne. Randy played with Ozzy for a few short years, recording legendary songs such as Crazy Train, which includes Randy's groundbreaking guitar solo. After touring with Ozzy in the early 80s, Randy was tragically killed in a plane crash on March 19, 1982 at the young age of 25. His body died that day, but his soul and music live on forever. 'Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon' is directed by Andre Relis. Narrated by Tracii Guns. Written and edited by Michael Bruining. Produced by Relis and Jessica Bennett.
