Today we're reviewing Lisa the Skeptic, a classic episode of The Simpsons in which Lisa discovers an apparent angel skeleton at an archaeological dig. In this episode we dig into hoaxes, the use of AI in academic writing, and the work of Stephen J. Gould. But in a larger sense, this episode will settle the age-old question of Science vs. Religion (spoiler alert: Capitalism wins). Captain Norm Joins the Lunkerdog and gives us yet another history lesson. Getting sentimental about your fishing gear. A recap of the blockbuster Pat Ford episode. Show Notes Episode 337: Eating Big Brother's Peanuts and Drinking Billy's Beer This week Host Dave Bledsoe angrily denies he looks anything like Billy Carter and threatens to fight anyone who says different! (Then he fell off his barstool and passed out. Again.) On the show this week we examine the legacy of the Good Old Boy Brother of America's favorite living Ex-President, Billy Carter. (We love Jimmy and all,but Jimmy never pissed on the runway beside Air Force One. If he had MAYBE he would've served more than one term. We're just saying.) Along the way we are reminded that Jimmy Carter put his PEANUT FARM in a blind trust when HE became President. From there we learn about little Brother Billy, who despite his flaws was NOT the Black Sheep of the Carter Family. (That would be their Harley Davidson racing sister.) Then we dive right into America's love affair with Billy, and you bet your ass we talk about Billy Beer! Our Sponsor this week is Davey Beer, when you want a bland generic American lager like all the rest, but with Dave's face on it, drink Davey Beer! We open the show with Billy Carter talking about Billy Carter and close with Keith Reedy singing his love of a bad, bad beer. It's October 21st. In October 1978, the Falls City Brewing Company ceased production of Billy Beer, a cheap brew endorsed by the younger brother of President Jimmy Carter. Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss the rise and quick fall of Billy Beer, why Billy Carter was an ongoing headache for the Carter administration, and the role of presidential siblings in general. Season 2 begins! So please welcome to the microphone: entertainment! The very first. Journey back to November 16th 1922 - Day 3 of the BBC - to meet Auntie's first entertainers. But history being history, nothing's easy... Discover why the BBC's first entertainers weren't the first after all, whether London, Birmingham or Manchester brought us the BBC's first entertainment concert - and why each of them has a claim to it. Our fabulous guest is comedian, actor, writer and professional liar Lee Mack, with tales from Not Going Out, Would I Lie To You and his earliest memories of broadcast comedy (who remembers Wait Till Your Father Gets Home?). You'll also hear rare clips of the original broadcasters (there are hardly any recordings from 1920s' broadcasts, so these are clips looking back), including Percy Edgar, Peter Eckersley, Hugh Bell, Leonard Hawke, Helena Millais, Ernie Mayne, Tommy Lorne and the Ziegeld Follies. Plus BBC Radio Norfolk's Paul Hayes brings us a follow-up from the previous Percy Edgar special, with tales of Barrie Edgar, footballing firsts and archive clips of Jimmy Jewell and Richard Dimbleby. From Billy Beer to Bobby Ball, via the first BBC song (Drake Goes West - or was it?), the first song about the BBC (Auntie Aggie of the BBC), the world's first radio song (List'ning on Some Radio) and the earliest live British TV football coverage still available (from 1949), we've compiled everything that kickstarted British broadcast entertainment. SHOWNOTES: Read more of Billy Beer, the BBC's first comedian, written by his descendant Bill Beer. Lee Mack joined us as part of a fundraiser for a young woman called Jenny. Read more and donate here. Your host Paul contributed a guest episode to The History of England podcast - a summary of our season 1 on half an hour, via some new (old) clips. It sums up the story so far - you can hear that here from summer 2021. Paul Hayes' documentary The Lost Voice of Football can be heard here. Vice President Kamala Harris' lawyers have asked her niece to stop using her name in any business ventures. It's an interesting question. She IS the niece of the vice president. Can't she tell her own story? But maybe it's just not a good idea to profit in any way from the name while her aunt is in office. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson wanted to get the opinions of her guests this week on A Woman's View. Her guests this week are long time former communications director Heather Barney, principal of Mountain Heights Academy Dr. DeLaina Tonks, and president of Smedley Financial Sharla Jessop. Beer has a long history in the United States and the world. In America, we have had thousands of breweries through the ages. And when you've got history, you've got collectors. We talked to two dedicated collectors of "breweriana," Lee Dickson and Ken Jones. We were privileged to get a look of just a tiny portion of their collections, and talk about how you get started in collecting breweriana. Even if it's just for fun - and no, that can of Billy Beer your uncle gave you 10 years ago isn't worth anything. The annual Green Lantern Bar party for the Harry Dean Stanton Fest will feature Palisades and The Binders in a show of 1970s female-driven rock to pair with a showing of the 1979 trucking film "Flatbed Annie & Sweetie Pie: Lady Truckers." We got together with fest director Lucy Jones, music director Scott Whiddon and singers Alicia Cox and Robbie Morgan to talk about putting the show together, trucking, politics, Billy Beer, hubcaps ... lots of stuff. Photo: Scott, Robbie, Lucy and Alicia.
George isn’t with us for Episode 6, so we talk about him (all good things, we promise) with our special guest, Matt Dapkins of Massive Beer Reviews, drink some highly sought-after “whales” like Heady Topper by The Alchemist, Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company, and Hop Crisis by 21st Amendment Brewery, and explain why they’re so coveted. We discuss the collector mentality versus fans just looking to enjoy their hobby, the amusing origins of Billy Beer, character development in shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Dexter” and the acting career of Michael C. Hall, vinyl record collecting, grown men playing with toys, old phone pranks, customer stories from working at a tattoo shop in downtown Scranton, growing up with Monty Python and the effect of British humor, getting into punk rock music, how technology has changed through the generations and the mounting pressures and distractions associated with it, and good beer in cans. Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM), Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Every episode is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.
This episode, Larry and Chris (and Marisa) continue their visit with Scott Davis and touch upon such important topics as gaining super powers, the naming of episodes, our over-reliance on visual humor, Rip Taylor, Jerry Lewis, Memorials, and what beers you can get in kegs, including Billy Beer!
Join Frank White, Pepe and all the gang as the swelter through another disgusting, hot, humid, muggy, gross...you know what? This is crap man, seriously...I'm here in a cramped writer's office and they want me to tell you about how great they are, how funny they are, how they want to take your calls and listen to what you have to say about current events and things going on in your life. They want me to write about how they'll be talking about everything from new and politics to pop culture and sex...well it's not happening. It's way too hot for that crap. Instead I'll tell you what they'll really be doing. They're going to be sitting around, in kiddie pools filled with ice cubes, dousing themselves in stale "Billy Beer." Enjoy the show folks. Listen, Call, Love...
