Episode Synopsis: Arthur and Quincey meet with Seward and Van Helsing in complete confusion as to why they had been summoned. At once, Van Helsing asks that the two men assent to committing themselves to Van Helsing's wishes, intent unknown. Quincey agrees immediately, but Arthur is more wary. He reluctantly agrees to hear what the professor has in mind. Before Van Helsing can go too far into the details, Arthur is enraged, condemning Van Helsing's intent on the desecration of the grave of the woman he loves. Van Helsing, however, swears that he must do what he will for the honor of Lucy, and the others reluctantly assent to see his evidence and then decide for themselves. Once inside the tomb, Van Helsing opens the coffin and peels back the leaden flange to reveal the empty coffin. Quincey questions Van Helsing's involvement in the removal of her body, but Van Helsing confirms with Seward that the body had been gone two nights ago, but present the preceding day. He asks the others to step outside and guard the tomb. The gentlemen take up spots where they can watch the tomb, and Van Helsing produces a piece of holy Eucharist, which he mixes with a putty, and uses to fill in the gap in between the door of the tomb and the doorframe. After some time, the group is alerted to the presence of a white-clad figure approaching. Cold and hard, and clutching an unconscious child to its breast is none other than the form of Lucy Westenra. Once her eyes touch the men, she snarls like an animal and tosses the child to the ground. She approaches Arthur and entraps him under a sort of seductive spell, but Van Helsing interjects with a crucifix which he uses to ward her away. Lucy tries to regain entrance to the safety of her tomb, but is confounded by the putty that Van Helsing used to seal the door. As he keeps her trapped between the door and the crucifix, Van Helsing again asks Arthur for permission to carry out his ghastly procedure, and Arthur assents. Van Helsing removes a chunk of the putty from the crevice, and all are amazed when Lucy's body slides through the small slice in between the closed door and the doorframe. Van Helsing replaces the putty to the crevice to keep Lucy trapped inside, and the party agrees to meet the following day at twelve noon. The following afternoon, Arthur, Van Helsing, Seward, and Quincey meet and travel to the cemetery. Once the mourners had departed and the gates had been locked, the men enter the tomb and open the coffin as before. They gaze with hate at the Undead body of Lucy, and Van Helsing sets out an array of ghastly tools. He states that once the procedure has concluded, Lucy will be purified, and that it should be Arthur, her lover, who performs the deed that saves her soul. Arthur does not falter as he pounds the long wooden stake through Lucy's heart, his friends empowering him with prayers. Once Lucy's body lay still again, all rejoice to see her reduced to her old self, worn with the care of her illness, and filled with peace. Arthur bids her goodbye, and he and Quincey exit the tomb leaving Seward and Van Helsing to remove Lucy's head and fill her mouth with garlic. Once outside the tomb, Arthur praises Van Helsing for his devotion to Lucy, proclaiming himself at Van Helsing's service. Van Helsing explains that they are still at the beginning of a perilous journey to eradicate the evil that killed poor Lucy. The men, now believers, pledge themselves to the task. Van Helsing receives a telegram that Mina is coming to join him, but he has to leave for Amsterdam, so he asks Seward to intercept her, giving him all the diary entries of Jonathan and Mina. Seward meets Mina at the train station and takes her back to his home at the asylum, whereupon Mina asks Seward to conference with her. In Seward's study, Mina sees Seward's phonograph diary, and after some coaxing, convinces him to let her listen to it. Mina explains that she must finish transcribing his diary to add to the collective pool of knowledge so that the other men might learn from his observations as well, so they can all set to catch the Count. Jonathan Harker travels to London to begin tracking down the fifty boxes of earth that the Count had sent from his home castle in Bistritz. Jonathan receives aid from Samuel Billington, and has the number of boxes confirmed by the harbormaster. Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 1, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe Main character Jonathan Harker is making his way to Castle Dracula. His journey starts in Budapest, and he enjoys many of the cultural delicacies, finding his basic German enough to get him understood. In the Morning he gets on the train and marvels at the countryside, so different from the British, flying by him. He is equally taken away by the dress of the local Slovaks.Eventually he arrives in Bistritz near the Borgo Pass, where the Count had instructed him to stay before making the final leg of the journey. On arrival the host greets him at the door, and she calls for her husband to get a letter for Jonathan. The letter is from Dracula, welcoming Jonathan to Transylvania, and tells him that he should get the coach at 3 on the following day. When Jonathan wakes, he finds that the owners of the inn are in a very strange state, and they refuse to answer any questions that he has about the count, and instead draw crossing on their chests with their fingers. Just as he is about to leave, the inn keeper implores Jonathan not to leave, to at least wait a few days. Jonathan says that he has to go, and the woman finally give in, allowing him to leave only after forcing he cross necklace on him. Getting into the coach he notices the coachman and the innkeeper talking evidentially about him, overhearing many repeated words in foreign languages translating to devil, hell, demon, vampire, etc. Just as they set off, he notices that everyone in the inn crosses themselves and give Jonathan a look of fear, and sorrow. They make their way through the beautiful forests of “the Mittle land” with blossoming fruit trees all around. Jonathan remarks their pace and is staggered at the speed that the coach is moving, the coachman is surely in a hurry. Night descends upon them the other passengers become excited and seem to urge the coachman to go faster and faster, afraid of what could happen at night. Eventually they make their way to an opening where Harker was supposed to meet the Count's conveyance, but no one is around to collect him. Suddenly out of nowhere, a caleche pulls up besides the coach, a tall man wearing a hat which covers his face, the only thing visible were 2 eyes that seemed to be red in the light. After getting into the caleche they set off at an equally great pace. Slowly Jonathan seems to think that they are going in circles, and eventually decides to test it, and discovers that they are looping themselves over and over again. A pack of wolfs howl in the distance, and slow they seem to be getting closer and closer. After midnight over and over again, a small blue flame seems to appear off of the side of the road, and the coachman descends the caleche to crouch near it and seeming collect something. On the last time, the coachman steps off a little further from the caleche than before, but as he is gone the pack of wolves get closer and closer until he is surrounded by them. Finally, the coachman comes back, and seems to make the wolfs move away with but a wave of his hand, as if they were but a fly buzzing in front of the caleche. They set off again and Harker falls asleep. When he wakes, he is pulling up to the most majestic castle, with a giant wooden door welcoming him to the Count.Get SurfShark and protSupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Boa leitura! This episode discusses Nicholas A.C. Read and Stephen J. Bistritz's Selling to the C-Suite and provides tips on how help those executives in the C-Suite understand the value that we can provide as lawyers. The authors suggests that “the new role of the CEO is to create value at the organization’s boundaries, to radically change relationships with suppliers, customers, and alliance partners.” So we have to think about how to bring value to our clients over and above providing great legal services, because that is what all clients expect. Bram Stoker Bram Stoker was an Irish author born in 1847 in Dublin. Stoker is probably the best known horror writer in the world (after Steven King!) and is famous for his fantastically best-selling novel Dracula. Interestingly, Stoker spent his first years in bed, stricken by an unknown illness , and then he went to school even becoming an athlete there! After school he got his Bachelor of Arts degree at Trinity College and then got a Master of Arts in 1875. Stoker’s early career was in the Irish Civil Service but on the side became the theatre critic for the Dublin Evening Mail, which was partly owned by Sheridan le Fanu, another Irish author of ghost stories who we have featured on the Classic Ghost Stories Podcast. Stoker also knew fellow Irish author Oscar Wilde. I guess Dublin was a small town in those days, especially in literary circles. In 1876, he became acquainted with the forceful English actor, Henry Irving after he wrote a nice review of Irving’s performance (Hint. You never know what good will come from nice reviews!) Stoker became Irving’s manager and followed him around Britain, which entailed a stay at Whitby (a place I love, and was last at just before Christmas) in 1880. Of course this is where Dracula comes ashore. Stoker died aged 64 in London. Though he is most famous for Dracula, Stoker obviously wrote other stories. This one, Dracula’s guest, which was later published as a short story was intended as the first chapter of the novel Dracula. In it, we have our nameless hero setting off on a day trip from Munich on Walpurgis Nacht. At the end, we realise that this young man is to be the guest of Dracula who writes from Bistritz in Transylvania. The hero of this story is obviously Jonathan Harker and Stoker’s publisher obviously saw no need for the first chapter in Munich, so Dracula begins in Bistritz. The style is very similar to Dracula. The hero does what all heroes in horror stories do, he goes somewhere he shouldn’t. Stoker paints a picture of Central Europe hooching with vampires. Young Mr Harker wanders into the tomb of the vampire countess from Styria (interestingly where Le Fanu (whom Stoker knew) set his story Carmilla — see previous episodes of this podcast. He is pulled out of the tomb by a might grasp, presumably Dracula’s and Dracula presumably blasts the poor vampire countess in her marble tomb with lightning, then sits on him, in the form of a wolf, keeping him warm in the icy cold. It’s a long way from Transylvania to Munich, but as Stoker reminds us: The Dead Travel Fast. LnR 023 Dracula by Bram Stoker (Replay) Bram Stoker: 11847-1912 http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/345 3 May. Bistritz.—Left Munich at 8:35 P. M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late. Buda-Pest seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets. I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible. The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of noble width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule. We left in pretty good time, and came after nightfall to Klausenburgh. Here I stopped for the night at the Hotel Royale. I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty. (Mem., get recipe for Mina.) I asked the waiter, and he said it was called “paprika hendl,” and that, as it was a national dish, I should be able to get it anywhere along the Carpathians. I found my smattering of German very useful here; indeed, I don’t know how I should be able to get on without it. Having had some time at my disposal when in London, I had visited the British Museum, and made search among the books and maps in the library regarding Transylvania; it had struck me that some foreknowledge of the country could hardly fail to have some importance in dealing with a nobleman of that country. I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of three states, Transylvania, Moldavia and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe. I was not able to light on any map or work giving the exact locality of the Castle Dracula, as there are no maps of this country as yet to compare with our own Ordnance Survey maps; but I found that Bistritz, the post town named by Count Dracula, is a fairly well-known place. I shall enter here some of my notes, as they may refresh my memory when I talk over my travels with Mina.

"3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8:35 P. M, on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late." The first line of Bram Stoker's Dracula makes it clear what the novel will be about: trains. As the book begins, the English solicitor Jonathan Harker is travelling across Europe by train, en route to meet his mysterious new Transylvanian client, complaining all the way about the late running of the service. "It seems to me that the further East you go the more unpunctual are the trains. What ought they to be in China?" In the Trainspotter's Guide to Dracula, Miles Jupp uses Bram Stoker's novel as it has never been used before, as a train timetable, following its references to plot a route across Europe by rail to Dracula's castle in Transylvania. Will Miles be able to reach Dracula's castle more quickly than Harker did, or will his journey be dogged by discontinued services, closed lines and delays? Produced by David Stenhouse. Readings by David Jackson Young.
