S11 E202: "Now The Role Will ALWAYS Be Black!": - Revealing The True Colors Of Wicked With Broadway and TV Star Angela Robinson Whitehurst

Black Like Me

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2025 72:32

Angela Robinson Whitehurst returns to the show to bring her Broadway experience to discussing Wicked and the translation from stage to screen. Dr. Gee and Angela discuss the timing of seeing race brought to the forefront of this version of Wicked, compared to when the stage musical was first a part of our culture. The power of fantasy and musical stories is that deep ideas about culture can be explored through an alternate version of our world. It allows us to see the realities of our world through a different lens.  Angela also exposes the way that Black women were not allowed into the Alphoba role before the film version, but now that will be the standard as the significance of the character has been redefined by Blackness. They continue their conversation about Black voices and stories in Hollywood, including having to make representation happen for themselves.  A native of Jacksonville, FL, Angela Robinson is best-known as The Ice Queen Veronica Harrington of Tyler Perry's The Haves and The Have Nots. For her work as Veronica she is the 2015 recipient of the Gracie Award (Best Female Actress – One to Watch). Angela has worked on Broadway, off Broadway and on stages throughout the US and abroad. Broadway productions include The Color Purple with Fantasia, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On! She has participated in National Tours of The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt. Her television/film credits include Law & Order: SVU, Another Bed and several regional and national commercials. She is the Winner of an Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award for her work as Shug Avery in The Color Purple, Angela has been nominated twice for a Black Theatre Alliance Award (The Color Purple, Dreamgirls), and for an Audelco Award (Radiant Baby). She is also a member of the Tony Award winning Broadway Inspirational Voices. In 2008 Angela and her husband Scott founded the WhiteRobin Group. WhiteRobin Group is a consulting firm for aspiring and seasoned artists; providing training, inspiration and direction via acting workshops, private acting coaching, blogs and mentorship programs.   Listen to Angela Robinson's podcast - Art and Spirit   Follow Angela Robinson: Facebook Instagram   alexgee.com Support the Show: patreon.com/blacklikeme Join the Black Like Me Listener Community Facebook Group

‘The Character to Compete'“You will behave yourself in, or you will behave yourself out. The choice is yours.”The role of leaders is to create the conditions that get the best from a group with all of its idiosyncrasies. No team is the same and will always require something different from its leaders.Does your team understand (and believe in) what they are collectively trying to do, and are they profoundly motivated by this potential and making measurable progress towards its achievement? Do they understand their role, and those of their teammates, in this? Our next guest on ‘In the Arena' is Todd Viney, who has seen it all. An outstanding 233 game playing career at the Melbourne Football Club, he was Captain, won Best and Fairests, an All Australian blazer, played in a Grand Final, and was selected in their Team of the Century. In my view, he was the fiercest competitor of his generation. But then again, I am a tad biased, having recruited Todd to the Demons from the Sturt Football Club in South Australia all those years ago after he converted to football at age 18 from playing tennis on the world circuit. It is quite a story. As CEO of Melbourne FC twenty-five years later, I recruited Todd Viney back to the club. We needed what Todd brought: the ‘character to compete'. Whilst never the plan, he would be required to step up as interim Senior Coach, but the real reason we recruited him was to build the playing list. This he would do, focusing on character and competitiveness as much as talent, and he and his astute recruiters, led by Jason Taylor, would accumulate enough talent to take the Demons to their first Premiership in 57 years in 2021.My firm belief is that ‘effort' can be coached, but not in the shouting, red-faced, vein-popping, finger-pointing ‘try harder' cliche of coaching, so often the expectation. As with all things leadership, the process is complex and nuanced, and will ultimately be the difference maker. The prevailing belief, so it seems, is that great leaders can ‘extract' performance from a group, and there is some truth in this. We all need a hurry-up from time to time. But this practice must be used sparingly to retain its impact and value, for it will have diminishing returns. In my experience, great leaders have the capacity to ‘unlock' performance from both the individual and the team, often by recognising capability and opportunity they are yet to see in themselves, and then by providing a pathway to achieve it.Todd Viney is an unlocker.Play On!Cam

The Prince arrives on the scene and finally ends the melee, warning the rival factions that if there's another brawl, they'll pay for it with their lives. In the aftermath, Lady Capulet asks Benvolio about her lovesick son, Romeo. Benvolio promises Lady Capulet he'll try to talk him out of his melancholy. Romeo appears, strumming his guitar, and confesses to Benvolio that his crush, Rosaline, has sworn to live a life of chastity as a nun. Benvolio tells Romeo to start looking for other women to woo, but Romeo says it will only remind him of his heartbreak. Back at Lord Capulet's house, Count Paris asks Juliet's father for her hand in marriage. Lord Capulet is reluctant because of Juliet's age but he invites Paris to a traditional feast he'll be hosting at his house that evening where he will be free to woo Juliet on his own. If she is receptive, Lord Capulet will agree to their marriage. After Paris leaves, Lord Capulet gives his servingman, Peter, a list of guests to invite to the feast. Peter, unable to read, goes out to the street to find someone to read the list of names to him so he knows who to invite. Outside the house, he encounters Romeo and Benvolio, who are passing by. Romeo reads the list of names out loud and comes upon the name of Rosaline. Peter thanks Romeo and Benvolio by inviting them to the feast, provided they're not of the house of Montague. Benvolio convinces Romeo to go in disguise so that he can see not just Rosaline, but all the other beautiful women who will be there. Romeo agrees to go, not to see other women, but to gaze on Rosaline's face. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hillary is traveling, and will be back next week with a new episode. In the meantime, we're bringing back one of her favorites..   “Believe in yourself.” For some people, that's a lifelong challenge. Then there are those rare folks, immensely talented and hard working, who always knew that they would be somebody. This week, Hillary talks with two of them—multiple Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile, and Broadway legend André De Shields—about the dreams (and setbacks) that led to where they are today.   Brandi Carlile is a six-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, and producer. Since her debut in 2004, she has released six studio albums and was the most nominated female artist at the 2019 Grammy Awards with six nominations, including Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Her memoir Broken Horses is a #1 New York Times bestseller.   André De Shields' acting career spans over 50 years. While currently best known for his performance in the musical Hadestown, he also appeared in The Wiz, Play On!, Ain't Misbehavin', and The Full Monty, and has directed and choreographed several shows and appeared on film and television. André has won numerous awards throughout this career, including an Emmy Award, a Tony Award, and a Grammy Award.   You can find a full transcript here.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dedicating six episodes to each play (one per act, plus a Q&A episode), this podcast explores the themes, scenes, characters, and lines that make Shakespeare so memorable. Like us, they hope to eventually cover every play The Bard wrote, thus permitting an ongoing contemplation and celebration of the most influential writer of all time. In this preview episode, join host Tim McIntosh in the first part of his conversation with Dr. Chris Perrin about how to teach Shakespeare, the neglected virtue of prudence, and the promise of classical education. The Play's the Thing is presented by The CiRCE Podcast Network. If you've listened to any of these episodes, you'll know how absolutely passionate I am about people staying connected with sport and movement, in any form. So when I saw the facts about the drop in participation in kids sport (it's so bad it's called a participation cliff), I wanted to be part of a solution. A movement. To keep kids in the game.  I'm jumping into your feed to bring you an episode of a new podcast I've been working on with Rebecca Sparrow (tween/teen author and advocate) and Georgie Trickett (kids coach and my cohost on The Sport Social). It's called Play On: Helping teens stay in the game, and I'd love you to take a listen.  Off the back of the Matilda's epic World Cup campaign, a wave of tweens and teens are thinking about starting a new sport. That can be tricky, and often, no one's as good as they'd like to be. Stick around and let us unpack that for you..... What to do when...you're the worst player in the team Ouch. What do you do if you're the worst player on the team? Bec, Georgie and Libby offer solutions for staying in the game including asking yourself to check the story you're telling yourself about your performance. Libby shares how sucking at netball helped her find swimming and Georgie discusses the pain of being moved UP a level and being the weakest and youngest link.  If you love this episode, we have more! My guest again today is director Sheldon Epps, and this is the third and final part of our recent conversation about his long and successful career as he relates it in his new book: My Own Directions — A Black Man's Journey in the American Theatre. If you missed the previous episodes it may be helpful to listen to those before joining us for this one. In 1997 when Sheldon was appointed the Artistic Director of the Pasadena Playhouse he became the first black person to lead a major theater company in Southern California and one of the only three artists of color to hold that position nationwide. And as he writes in his book, “in the words of a song from Hallelujah, Baby! being good wasn't going to be good enough. Aiming for greatness was required as there were those who were there to support that goal, and there were others who most certainly were waiting for me to fail.” In the last episode Sheldon shared with us how he met the many challenges of revitalizing what at the time was a somewhat faded theater company and successfully transforming both its audience and its Artistic Mission. And he was able to accomplish all of that despite the severe financial challenges that the Playhouse faced mostly due to a large loan that had be taken out decades earlier. As we ended that episode Sheldon was telling us how those economic problems finally became so overwhelming that it was decided that the Playhouse needed to close down for a time and take what Sheldon called an “Intermission” so that that the debt issues could be addressed. But it was not at all clear to him or anyone else if the PP's curtain would ever go up on a second act.  And that's where we pick up our conversation today.   Later in the episode we have what I think is a very illuminating discussion about the challenges that Artistic Directors now face, especially in regard to the way that Boards of Trustees of non-profit theater companies have changed over the last 25 years. It 's my favorite part of the episode. And we also discuss Sheldon's all black production Kiss Me Kate, and his Broadway musical Play On!, which took Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and reset it in Harlem in the 1930's using the the songs of Duke Ellington. My guest today is Sheldon Epps whose new book is titled, My Own Directions — A Black Man's Journey in the American Theatre. There he shares the story of his long and successful career during which he has often been “the first”, “one of the few”, or even “the only” person of color to reach various levels of achievement in the world of theater.  At the center of the book are the two decades Epps served as "Artistic Director" of The Pasadena Playhouse, one of the oldest and most well-known regional theaters in America, and at the time Sheldon took that job, it was also one the whitest! How he met the many challenges of revitalizing that somewhat faded theater company and transforming both its audience and its artistic vision could not be more instructive at a time when theater companies nationwide are struggling with many of these same issues. This is the first of three episode in which you will hear about Sheldon's very prolific freelance directing career Off-Broadway and at theaters across the country, as well as the two hit musicals he created — Blues In the Night and Play On! — that took him to Broadway, London's West End and around the world.   Today we will start at the beginning of his story with his childhood in Teaneck, NJ, the inspiration he received from the Broadway musicals of the 1960s and 70s, and the remarkable roles he played in high school. Then we follow his intense acting training at Carnegie Mellon University, his professional debut in multiple productions of Jaques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris, and the co-founding of his own Off-Broadway theater company, The Production Company, where Blues In The Night had its premiere. Reduced Shakespeare Company Podcast

The African-American Shakespeare Company production of Richard II, in a new Play On! translation by Naomi Iizuka, runs this weekend and next April 15-24, 2022, at the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco. Director L. Peter Callender and star Lijesh Krishnan discuss the creation of this production; the return to live performances with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] (and how it will travel to Shakespeare in Detroit in May, 2022); the open secret of how Shakespeare gets adapted and translated all the time; unnecessarily nice words about Reed Martin; the distinction between common people and the masses; the difference between the quality of the jokes and the people saying the jokes; the promise of opening night drinks; and the importance of rewarding audiences for returning to live performances. (Length 21:31) The post Hail, Richard II appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.
