Barbara ist geil und ruchlos is the title of a 17th century description of emperor Sigismund's second wife, Barbara of Celje and it goes on as follows:“Barbara, was a German Messalina, a woman of insatiable lust; so nefarious / that she had no god / nor angel nor devil / nor heaven nor hell/that she believed in. When her handmaidens fasted and prayed / she scolded them / that they tortured their bodies / to worship a fictitious god. Instead she admonished them / in her good Sardanapalian way / that they should in every way enjoy the pleasures of this life / because after this there is no other to be hoped for. This godless harlot / sought paradise on this foul earth in doglike lust / although she was already close to 60 years of age.” End quote. But this is not where it ends. The Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu described her end, in an abandoned church in Styria thus: The features, though a hundred and fifty years had passed since her funeral, were tinted with the warmth of life. Her eyes were open; no cadaverous smell exhaled from the coffin. The two medical men, one officially present, the other on the part of the promoter of the inquiry, attested the marvelous fact, that there was a faint but appreciable respiration, and a corresponding action of the heart. The limbs were perfectly flexible, the flesh elastic; and the leaden coffin floated with blood, in which to a depth of seven inches, the body lay immersed. Here then were all the admitted signs and proofs of vampirism. The body, therefore, in accordance with the ancient practice, was raised, and a sharp stake driven through the heart of the vampire, who uttered a piercing shriek at the moment, in all respects as might escape from a living person in the last agony. Then the head was struck off, and a torrent of blood flowed from the severed neck. The body and head were next placed on a pile of wood, and reduced to ashes, which were thrown upon the river and borne away, and that territory has never since been plagued by the visits of a vampire. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate

“And since these especially ruinous harms to all of Christendom are not to be tolerated or suffered any longer, so we have completely agreed – with a well-considered disposition, by means of much and various discussion and counsel, which we have earnestly undertaken concerning this among ourselves and with many other princes and lords of the Holy Empire, for the assistance of the Holy Church, the comfort of Christendom and the honour and profit of the Holy Empire – that we want fully and specifically to remove and depose the above-written Lord Wenceslas as a neglectful procrastinator, dismemberer and one unworthy of the Holy Empire from the same Holy Roman Empire and all the dignities pertaining to it with immediate effect.” End quoteSo concluded the Prince Electors of Cologne, Mainz, Trier and the Palatinate on August 20th 1400. King Wenceslaus IV, son of the great emperor Karl IV, king of Bohemia and duke of Luxemburg was to be deposed for his “evil deeds and afflictions [that are] are so clearly manifest and well known throughout the land that they can neither be justified nor concealed” end quote How could that happen. Last time we looked at the house of Luxemburg, they directly held almost a quarter of the German lands, controlled two of the seven electoral votes, had manoeuvred themselves into pole position to gain the Hungarian and the Polish crown, with even a long-term option on Austria, Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol . But now, a mere 22 years later, the great second Carolingian empire lies in tatters. How is that possible? That is what we will look at today. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/HistoryofthegermansTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audiible.com: https://n9.cl/nxwnn Carmilla By Sheridan Le Fanu Narrated by Linda Barrans When the tale begins, a strange and sudden malady is claiming the lives of the local peasants in Styria. Laura, an innocent girl of eighteen, lives a lonely life there with her loving father and two governesses. Then a dramatic coach crash on Laura's doorstep brings a mysterious, beautiful, but languorous young woman to stay with them. This is Carmilla. Carmilla becomes deeply attached to Laura, and embarrasses her with her wild outbursts of affection. Laura is deeply drawn to her, but also repulsed. When Laura falls gradually ill, exhausted and melancholic, she is unaccountably loathe to tell anyone. She has vivid dreams—one of a huge black cat prowling her bedroom, another of being kissed and caressed. Eventually her mother's voice warns her to beware the assassin, revealing Carmilla in a blood-stained nightgown. Innocently, Laura interprets this as a sign that Carmilla is being murdered. She rouses the household, but when they break down the door to her room, Carmilla is gone.

on a visit to Munich before leaving for Transylvania. It is Walpurgis Night, and despite the hotelier's warning not to return late, the young man later leaves his carriage and wanders toward the direction of an abandoned "unholy" village. As the carriage departs with the frightened and superstitious driver, a tall and thin stranger scares the horses at the crest of a hill. After a few hours, as he reaches a desolate valley, it begins to snow; as a dark storm gathers intensity, the Englishman takes shelter in a grove of cypress and yew trees. The Englishman's location is soon illuminated by moonlight to be a cemetery, and he finds himself before a marble tomb with a large iron stake driven through the roof, the inscription reads: "Countess Dolingen of Gratz / in Styria / sought and found death / 1801". The Englishman is disturbed to be in such a place on such a night, and as the storm breaks anew, he is forced by pelting hail to shelter in the tomb's doorway. As he does so, the bronze door of the tomb opens under his weight and a flash of forked lightning shows the interior, revealing a "beautiful woman with rounded cheeks and red lips, seemingly sleeping on a bier". The force of the following thunder peal throws the Englishman from the doorway (experienced as "being grasped as by the hand of a giant") as another lightning bolt strikes the iron spike, destroying the tomb and the now screaming woman inside. The Englishman's troubles are not quite over. As he painfully regains his senses from the ordeal, he is repulsed by a feeling of loathing, which he connects to a warm feeling in his chest and licking at his throat. The Englishman summons the courage to peek through his eyelashes and discovers a gigantic wolf with flaming eyes is attending him.Military horsemen are the next to wake the semi-conscious man, chasing the wolf away with torches and guns. Some horsemen return to the main party and the Englishman after the chase, reporting that they had not found 'him' and that the Englishman's animal is "a wolf—and yet not a wolf". They also note that blood is on the ruined tomb, yet the Englishman's neck is unblooded. "See comrades, the wolf has been lying on him and keeping his blood warm". Later, the Englishman finds his neck pained when a horseman comments. When the Englishman is taken back to his hotel by the men, he is informed that it is none other than his expectant host Count Dracula who has alerted the Maître d'hôtel of "dangers from snow and wolves and night" in a telegram during the time the Englishman was away. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/audiblyaudiobooks/support

Did you know that Austrians drink more beer than any other country in the world?! Well, besides the Czechs. Austrians love their beer so much that they give it cute nicknames, like Bierchen and Bierli. They're also passionately loyal to their favourite local beer, whether it's Ottakringer in Vienna, Puntigamer in Styria or Stiegl in Salzburg. In another of the chapters from our book, Schau ma mal, we explore the Austrians very special relationship with beer. The Wurst Guide - am worst day - Immer Montags - Immer deppat. This week we will look at what the poor count Rudolf of Habsburg does once he had been elected King of the Romans. This is not the first time the electors have chosen a man of much more modest means than themselves. William of Holland and Hermann von Salm had failed to leverage their elevated status into tangible gains. But Rudolf is different. Through a combination of charm, cunning and fecundity he managed to wrestle the duchies of Austria, Styria and Carinthia from its current owner, the immeasurably rich and profoundly vain king Ottokar II of Bohemia. A story of political acumen, personal bravery and dishonourable tactics on the Marchfeld. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historyofthegermans

SPOOKY TIME. Welcome back, Herders! In folklore, a werewolf[a] (from Old English werwulf 'man-wolf'), or occasionally lycanthrope[b] (from Ancient Greek λυκάνθρωπος, lukánthrōpos, 'wolf-human'), is an individual that can shapeshift into a wolf (or, especially in modern film, a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature), either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction (often a bite or the occasional scratch from another werewolf) with the transformations occurring on the night of a full moon.[c] Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction, called lycanthropy,[d] are Petronius (27–66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150–1228).The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the medieval period. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs also spread to the New World with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel to the belief in witches, in the course of the Late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland (especially the Valais and Vaud) in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century. The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon, albeit a marginal one, accusations of lycanthropy being involved in only a small fraction of witchcraft trials.[e] During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf-charming. The case of Peter Stumpp (1589) led to a significant peak in both interest in and persecution of supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with persecution of wolf-charmers recorded until well after 1650, the final cases taking place in the early 18th century in Carinthia and Styria.[f]

Synopsis We probably have the irrepressible playwright, music critic, and ardent socialist George Bernard Shaw to thank for this music—the Third Symphony of Sir Edward Elgar. Shaw had been trying to persuade Elgar to write a Third Symphony, and, early in 1932, had written to Elgar: "Why don't you make the BBC order a new symphony. It can afford it!" A few months later, Shaw dashed off a postcard with a detailed, albeit tongue-in-cheek program for the new work: "Why not a Financial Symphony? Allegro: Impending Disaster; Lento mesto: Stone Broke; Scherzo: Light Heart and Empty Pocket; Allegro con brio: Clouds Clearing." Well, there was a worldwide depression in 1932, but the depression that had prevented Elgar from tacking a new symphony was more personal: the death of his beloved wife in 1920. Despite describing himself as "a broken man," unable to tackle any major projects, when Elgar died in 1934, he left behind substantial sketches for a Third Symphony, commissioned, in fact, by the BBC. Fast forward 64 years, to February 15th, 1998, when the BBC Symphony gave the premiere performance of Elgar's Third at Royal Festival Hall in London, in a performing version, or "elaboration" of Elgar's surviving sketches, prepared by the contemporary British composer Anthony Payne. It was a tremendous success, and, we would like to think, somewhere in the hall the crusty spirit of George Bernard Shaw was heard to mutter: "Well—about time!" Is minerality a flavour or a texture? What does it feel or taste like? Why do wines made from hybrid grapes deserve your attention? What can winemakers learn from Jimi Hendrix? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm interviewing Aleks Zecevic, wine writer and host of the Vintners podcast. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Highlights How does Ewald Tscheppe of Werlitsch get a unique texture to his wines? How did carrots help Aleks improve his understanding of and appreciation for biodynamic wine? What distinguishes Werlitsch Ex Vero I, II, and III? Which common characteristics will you taste in most wines from Styria, Austria? What will you experience when tasting Werlitsch Ex Vero III? Is minerality a flavour or a texture? What do I especially love about the mouthfeel of Rockway Vineyards Small Lot Syrah? How does Slovenian influence show up in the wines of north east Italy? What is the Carso? Gut Oggau is a project in the small town of Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, started by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck in 2007. Before starting the winery, Eduard made wine with his father in Styria, and Stephanie's family owned and operated the Michelin starred restaurant Taubenkobel. They restored the 17th century winery that had been abandoned for 20 years. Their vision to farm responsibly and apply some of the biodynamic principles started at the very beginning and their wines have always made with very low intervention in the cellar. They are one of the leaders of the natural wine movement in Austria, but also in the world at this point. The episode explores their journey and some of their life and wine philosophies. They speak about their farming methods and touch up on a few food and wine issues that are very relevant today.

Potzinger Sauv Blanc • Winery in southern Styria has existed since 1860 • Styria is a mountainous, forested state in southern Austria, known for its wine, spas and castles. • The Sauvignon Blanc is a cross between Traminer and Chenin Blanc. o The name is composed of the two French words sauvage (“wild” or “natural”) and blanc (“white”). And wild is quite apt when it comes to white wine and its characteristic bouquet. o The Sauvignon Blanc impresses with its unique freshness, the taste is often reminiscent of gooseberries, currants with a citrus note, and usually has a rather slender body and crisp freshness. o The fresh white wine is also considered an excellent culinary companion and goes well with fish and seafood, light starters and cheese Torre Aragonese Ciro Rosato • The historic Capoano family boasts a range of illustrious figures, dating back over thirteen centuries, in the fields of science, history, law, art and religion. • Their passion for wine production, to delight their own palates as well as those of their guests, is equally ancient. • The estate extends between centuries-old olive groves and native vineyards for about twenty hectares. From these lands DOC wines and oils are born that have given, for over two thousand years, authority and prestige to the true Cirò, just think that it was offered as a gift to the winners of the Athene Olympics. • CARDINAL OF AMALFI PIETRO CAPOANO TO HIS BROTHER RAFFAELE (circa 1180): o “Brother, I ask you for that nectar for his holiness that asks me for a commission." • 100% Gaglioppo Grape o What is Gaglioppo Grape? A delicious, rare find from Calabria that is the child grape of Sangiovese and sibling to Sicily's Nerello Mascalese. Wines often deliver dusty fruit flavors. o Fresh bouquet with hints of wild berries. Lemon Spina, limoncello calabrese • The La Spina Santa farm-holiday farm is located in Bova Marina, a small tourist center about 40 km from Reggio Calabria. Located 500 meters from the sea and its beautiful beaches, immersed in a circle of hills among the green of the bergamot plantations, it enjoys an excellent position in the center of the Grecanica area. • The farmhouse “ La Spina Santa”Is the ideal place for hikers and for those who love a holiday in direct contact with nature. Ideal for those who want to live healthy and immerse themselves in nature without giving up the comforts of life. • The characteristic environment with its folkloristic evenings will allow you to spend a stay of excellent quality. Amelia B Edwards Born in 1831 in London and died in 1892 aged 60 in Weston Supermare at the seaside near Bristol. She was a novelist, traveller and enthusiastic amateur Egyptologist. Her mother was Irish and her father had been an officer in the British Army and then became a banker. She was married, but her emotional attachments were with women and she lived with and was apparently in love with Ellen Braysher, widow, and Ellen Byrne a school inspector's wife. A Night on The Borders of the Black Forest was recommended by Nadia Astorga in May 2022 This is the third story by Amelia B we've done, the other's being The Phantom Coach and Salome. This is the first of hers that is less a ghost story (if fact not a ghost story at all) and more an adventure. The collection of stories is also entitled A Night On The Borders of the Black Forests and was published in 1890. For comparison Le Fanu's Carmilla set in Styria in Austria was published in 1872 and Stoker's Dracula was published in 1897. Elizabeth Gaskell's The Grey Woman was published in 1861. It reminded me most of The Grey Woman because it is set in the border area of France and Germany at about the same period and there are brigands in the woods in both. It's a definite nod to the Gothic but also a right rollicking adventure story and so reminds of The Grey Woman but also the Scottish set A Journey of Little Profit by John Buchan from 1896, because it is also a tale of wanderings on foot and George Borrow's Wild Wales was published in 1862, which deals with supposedly true wanderings in the Wild. Mary Braddon's The Cold Embrace and Hoffman's The Sandman also have people tramping all over Germany and venturing into France and the Netherlands. It must have been busy on the roads. Wordsworth had an edition of the Prelude out in 1850. This thrilling love for mountainous wild places titillated the middle class urban readers on a trivial level while Wordsworth was aiming for the spiritual, but each to their own indeed. The story structure: Neat. Enjoying the milieu as much as anything. The tramping over the countryside. On his own, meets up with Gustav, on to the village, the coach trip, wandering at night, the inn, suspicions mount. The innkeeper won't drink the wine. It tastes bad. It smells funny as does the coffee. Burned! Why not set the dogs on them? Why not just poison them dead rather than drug them with a soporific? I think that's a plot hole. And if they don't sell the stuff they steal (it's in the granary) what's the point of murdering strangers? But a good read and nicely written, easy to narrate. A sprinkling of German terms for colour. Gustav shows too much interest in the slow-witted peasant girl Annchen for my liking. After all, he's got a madchen at home. She won't drink the wine either. The beer seems fine though. The landlord checks how much Gustav as drunk. Jack Unterweger was born in 1950 in Graz, which is the capital city of Styria, a state in southeast Austria (and fun fact it is the second largest city in Austria after Vienna). His early life was somewhat turbulent, and it is thought that a combination of events from his early childhood caused a sever hatred of sex workers. As you can imagine from a true crime podcast, he was a murderer. And this is where the story gets crazy... In fact, I think that this is the absolute craziest story we have talked about on this podcast to date. Just a warning, this story is difficult to listen to and mentions sexual assault and murder. And it's another one of those cases that's absolutely infuriating because so many deaths could have been avoided. We hope you join us for this absolutely crazy story of an episode!
