Today we're joined by Jeff Cloud of Velvet Blue Music, known for his work with Pony Express, Joy Electric, and California dream pop band Starflyer 59. Cloud founded Velvet Blue in 1996, and the label has been home to pivotal releases by people like Richard Swift, with whom Cloud played in Pony Express and Starflyer 59, the Broadway Hush, an early project headed by Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw of Cotton Jones, Fine China, and many more. Totally blue collar in spirit and independent, the label continues to release new music from groups like the synth pop outfit Golf Slang, as well as Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric and Jason Martin's Starflyer 59 gem, Vanity. We're happy to have him on Transmissions to discuss it all—meeting the Martin brothers, Velvet Blue, David Lynch, and much more. You can support this podcast by checking out our Patreon page. Transmissions is written and produced by Jason P. Woodbury. Our audio is edited by Andrew Horton. Our show is executive produced by Justin Gage, Aquarium Drunkard founder. AD Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Rate, review, subscribe, and spread the word if you dig the show.
Jamie St. James from Black n Blue joins me to discuss releasing new Black n Blue music, working with Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, Warrant and much more! Jamie also talks about the Black n Blue / Bon Jovi connection and which BnB song almost ended up on a KISS album!

Growing up, spending many hours at his favorite indie record store in Riverside, CA, Jeff developed a love for music that was above and beyond the standard mainstream fare. His dream of one day owning a record label would finally come true in the mid 1990s. Little did he know that one day he would sell thousands of records and have songs featured on popular TV shows such as Homeland, Boston Legal, American Idol and American Horror Story and also work with organizations such as Apple, Pacifico Beer, Nike and Disney. As other record labels dropped like flies around him, Jeff continued to invest in top-shelf musicians and release new music for over 25 years! Chapter 217 - "Too Young To Be A Country Music Star" ...as read by Joey Esquibel of the Velvet Blue Music PodcastThe alternative title for this week’s chapter could’ve been "meeting the right people at the right time." Joey talks about meeting Travis Zimmerman and how the prospect of working with Jason Martin led him to join Jupiter James and how they became one of Velvet Blue Music’s first signings. That encounter led to Joey playing in Bon Voyage and Starflyer 59. We also talk about Joey’s time in Map and how he almost made it as a country music star in Hank Floyd. Jesse and Josh welcome none other than composer/musician, Steve Wilder Blumenthal (Lost Treasure Of The Valley; Rick And Morty; Big Town Improv) to Big Town! Steve talks about his recent attempts to cook for himself, as well as his childhood attempts to be an athlete! This leads to improvised scenes about the invention of the microwave oven, the world’s sneeziest baseball player, and a five-year-old with high standards of cleanliness! Then in a narrative improv inspired by a bird fact, two scientists explore the desert antarctic, only to discover a strange civilization whose inhabitants worship a strange creature! Original music by Steve Wilder Blumenthal (wilderbluemusic.com)!

This episode of Jack Dappa Blues Radio is part two of my discussion with scholar Tyler D. Parry, Assistant Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies Program and Book Review Editor: Black Perspectives, about his co-authored journal and the upcoming book titled ' Slavehounds and Abolition". Dr. Parry gives great detail of the role of the bloodhound before, during, and after slavery. He delves into the origins of the purpose this hybrid animal was created, where they were trained and how it's been utilized for centuries as a weapon against the freedoms and lives of the "Blues People" on America.
