On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of singer-songwriters who came up in the social media age, and who, as you'll hear, have leaned on each other for support as their careers have taken off. It's Girl in Red and Gigi Perez. Girl in Red is the name under which Norwegian singer Marie Ullven started making intimate, sometimes sad bedroom recordings back in 2016 or so. Some of those songs, like 2018's “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” really connected with people, and she became something of an icon, especially to young gay women. Her sound has grown over the years and Ulven has embraced bigger opportunities, including opening shows for Taylor Swift—it doesn't get a lot bigger than that. Her last album, the hilariously titled I'm Doing it Again, Baby! was released last year, and as you'll hear in this conversation, Ulven is stepping into acting as well: She'll star in a film called Low Expectations, which she filmed earlier this year. Check out Girl in Red's “Hemingway” right here. Gigi Perez is another fantastic songwriter and performer whose “Sailor Song” was everywhere last summer, and for good reason: It's simple and gorgeous and undeniably catchy. Perez first started writing songs a few years ago in the wake of her sister's passing, and she's both created some incredible music and played big shows—including opening for Coldplay—in the past few years. Perez's debut album At the Beach, in Every Life came out earlier this year, and it's a thoughtful, sometimes uplifting, sometimes heartbreaking set of really personal songs. Check out “Sailor Song” right here. In this conversation, these two resilient ladies get into some real talk, touching on Girl in Red's recent stint in rehab and her upcoming movie role, the inevitable comedown after a big tour, songwriting camps, and Perez's favorite movie of all time. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Girl in Red and Gigi Perez for chatting. The gift of low expectations

When you receive help, do you perceive it as a transactional burden or as a gift? How do you support the people, ideas, and art you admire? Do you feel disappointed when they go against your views, or do you willingly allow them the freedom to grow and evolve into whatever they might become, despite potential disagreements? https://youtu.be/Ueyw7nSI6jc Last year, during a Haven Phrase Maze exploration around the prompt “The Money Changed Everything,” we discussed what makes a gift a gift. We asked whether, once given, the giver of a true gift can have any justifiable feelings about what is done with it. Or if a hope or expectation turns a gift into a conditional transaction. For example, when we give someone a present, we might expect them to use it in a particular way (and not to sell it on, exchange it, or give it to someone else, for an acceptable time at least). What impact does this obligation have on the receiver? How does this relate to our engagement with artists, public figures, and one another? Conditional vs Unconditional Support Are we conditional patrons, offering support only when we agree with the other person? Or are we unconditional patrons, standing by them because we believe in their how and why, even when we disagree with the substance of their particular "what"? This is on my mind because of a comment I received on a recent YouTube video. Someone explained why they disagreed with something I had said, which is fair enough. But I was struck by the intended sucker punch at the end of the comment... “Unsubscribed.” That word was like a weapon; it felt like an attempt at punishment and behaviour modification. It focused on the surface rather than the source. I know that subscribing isn't a gift, but I couldn't help but wonder if a similar mechanism exists in the distinction between conditional and unconditional gift-giving. This is why I don't tend to ask people directly to subscribe to my podcast, videos, or social media. I want it to be a choice, not a favour or transaction. I leave it for people to come and go as they like, with no pressure either way. If the time comes for us to go separate ways, that's fine. It happens. We don't owe one another anything. We've just had a nice ride along together for a bit. Unconditional Patronage and Disagreement Do we tie our support for people to WHAT they think or HOW and WHY they reach their conclusions? Think about the creators, artists, or figures you follow and admire. Do you find yourself withdrawing support when they say or do something you disagree with? What would it look like to support them unconditionally, focusing on their how and why rather than a particular what? Over the years, I have come to support people whose WAY of thinking I respect and value. Most people I follow express views I disagree with occasionally (in some cases, a lot), but I sincerely appreciate the how and why behind their ideas. The process inspires me as much as, if not more than, the outcome. It's only if their values (the drive of their why) change that I tend to consider whether or not I want to continue supporting them. It can happen. There is a flip-side to this coin... “Subscribed” It can feel validating when someone agrees with something I say and tells me they are subscribing or following me because of it. However, there is a subtle pull that can occur here. The connection between the statement they agreed with and their choice to subscribe creates a conditional presence. I might feel the pressure: "To keep them happy, I better keep saying similar things." This can lead to a slippery slope toward mediocrity, self-censorship, and audience capture - forces we see in abundance today. When we engage like this with people, we subtly encourage them to appeal to the crowd, avoid risks, and conform to expectations (to appease followers and provoke adversaries) rather than exploring new possibilities and navigating the...

“It's not really the place that you're going, it's the stories that reveal themselves in the place that you're going. You're fascinated by the lives and the experiences that people had before you, because you're finding this connective tissue emotionally to another generation, another decade, another era.” We're in great company with Tereasa Surratt, the Founder and Owner of Camp Wandawega, who was persuaded by her husband, David, twenty years ago to save this pocket of American history tucked away in the woods of Wisconsin, and they have been restoring it ever since as a getaway for the creative community. What was once an infamous lakeside property - living many lives over time as a brothel and speakeasy, a family resort, a Catholic retreat center and summer camp - was left to be condemned until David's childhood nostalgia got the best of him. Today, Camp Wandawega has become a retreat for creatives to gather, a maker of goods that help us explore the great outdoors, and a place to step off the grid and back in time. In this episode, Tereasa shares how a passion for preservation and a humility for the never ending work to be done, turned into a Reveille attracting other likeminded creatives to seek inspiration from and memories made in nature. Top Takeaways [1:40] Tereasa and her husband, David, spent the last few decades living two lives - one as executives in Chicago's advertising industry and the other restoring an abandoned camp in Wisconsin. After “burning the candle at both ends” they went all in on what would become Camp Wandawega.  [5:55] Read or Listen to 100 years of a celebrated American Getaway, which has lived so many lives and worn so many layers - from a modest lakeside resort to a rambunctious brothel and speakeasy, from a family friendly Catholic retreat center to the timeless camp it has become today. [7:35] How Camp Wandawega fell into David and Tereasa's hands…not by design, but by accident and by inheritance.  [15:20] Close your eyes and imagine getting lost amidst the woods, strolling along the hiking paths from numerous cabins to a sprawling lakefront - as Tereasa visualizes a tour of Camp Wandawega - where the focus has been to preserve and restore, rather than trying to recreate and renovate. [20:15] Tereasa and David realized early on that everyone is looking for different experiences, coming with different expectations. Thus, taking pride in their no frills accommodations, they set out to create the Manifesto of Low Expectations, setting the humorous tone for making fun memories.  [30:45] There are so many surprises in store during your Camp Wandawega stay, so be sure to pull out the drawers, open the cabinets, peek in closets, and immerse yourself as you discover an era gone by.  [33:00] Snack and sip in good company - from the Canteen stocked with old fashioned packaged goods reminiscent of your childhood, to the Farm Stand showcasing the bounty of Wisconsin's seasonal produce, to the curated picnic baskets and meals prepared by local chefs and bakers, growers and makers.  Notable Mentions All Together Now The Elegant Farmer Solemn Oath Brewery Chef Joe Flamm of Rose Mary Chef John Manion of El Che & Brasero  Stock Campfire Jamboree  Shoppable Collaborations The Tie Bar accessories  Wally's camping gear Into The Woods bedding Chicago Pop Up Visit For Yourself Camp Wandawega Website | @campwandawega  American Getaway Podcast | Wandawega Historical Society Wandawega Camp Store | CW Books  Tereasa Surratt Website | Tereasa Surratt on Intro Stay In Good Company Website

The Freedom of Low Expectations | Tullian Tchividjian | "Breaking the Law", Part 11 This is Pastor Tullian's final message in his “Breaking the Law" series. We've loved it. And we're sad to see it go. You'd have to be a robot to not be comforted by this one. The freedom that comes with lowered, realistic expectations of ourselves and others is no joke. Rest. Relax. Exhale. It is finished. Romans 7:15-25

Today we open with the dockworkers going on strike. I warned everyone yesterday this was going to happen and suggested preparing for the supply chain interruption. This will be part of an ongoing topic interlaced throughout, especially seeing the poor response of the Federal government to people suffering in North Carolina. Tiananmen Tim Walz was just discovered to have lied about being in Hong Kong during the uprising and massacre. He has been telling that story his whole life, including having it in the Congressional record. Maybe that's why Senator Claire McCaskill told the MSNBC audience to temper their expectations for tonight's debate. She gave a few low-blows to both Vance and Trump, but, ultimately, she's worried Tim Walz will not do well tonight. That may also be why Kamala Harris decided to tell a podcast that she was sleep deprived during such a “speedy, speedy time” and that's what led to picking Walz. Is she laying the groundwork for removing him in an effort to reinvigorate a flailing campaign? The next topic relates to the poor response time and action of our Federal government related to the flooding in North Carolina and elsewhere. They really do put Americans last. Maybe we should not be surprised. After all, Harris has said before that when it comes to emergencies, she uses her Marxist view of “equity” to determine who needs the most help and resources. Unfortunately for her, CNN had to admit that of the two camps, Donald Trump is coming across as much more presidential and empathetic for those suffering in the wake of Helene. They were not happy reporting that fact, but it was something they did tell their audience. And the Harris campaign is likely very aware of just how bad their numbers are at this point. Even Major Garrett of CBS, who did a random man-on-the-street segment in various restaurants in Michigan, found that everyone he talked to was supporting Trump. He said he knows the Harris camp is also aware of that fact. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media.
