Ever feel like you're getting less bang for your buck at the supermarket? Well you might be right. As production costs rise, many companies have been resorting to what's called ‘Shrinkflation'. Rather than raising the cost to the consumer, they make the product smaller while charging the same price. According to a Global Inflation Monitor survey in 2023, 46% of consumers said that they have noticed shrinkflation, with 55% of kiwi consumers noticing the tactic and the same amount stating the practice was an unacceptable response to rising costs. Today on The Front Page, we're joined by Massey University marketing professor, Bodo Lang to discuss the ethics behind shrinkflation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's growing concerns from experts about the impact social media has on the political landscape. It's been revealed that social media giant Meta has limited the reach of political content on its platforms- inspiring increased worry about censorship. Massey University marketing professor Bodo Lang says platforms like Instagram and Facebook specialise in short-form content - and he believes those outlets aren't suited for political content. "We want people to think about these things- and social media isn't the best way to get people to think about these things." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's growing concerns younger teens are being targeted by vape marketing. An Auckland University study shows people aged 14-to-17 are more likely to see vaping ads than 18-to-20-year olds. Half of the 3500 in the study had been exposed through social media. Marketing professor, Bodo Lang, says more needs to be done to control messaging around vape products. "It's really been shown to be a very powerful entry drug for young people, particularly non-smokers to get them into vaping- and then potentially get into something else." The Commerce Commission's launched investigations into the two big supermarket chains' pricing and promotional practices. It's looking into whether the practices of Woolworths, Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island, comply with the Fair Trading Act. It comes following a Consumer NZ complaint to the commission, after it asked shoppers for examples of unclear or misleading prices. They offered 600 responses. Massey University marketing professor Bodo Lang told Roman Travers that the Commission's options range from a compliance letter to court proceedings with fines. He says a charge is really just a signal but consumers would react negatively, leading to changes in practices. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The cost of living crisis is expected to change the ads we see each day. That's because younger people, and families, are feeling the sharpest pinch. Sanitarium has dropped Weet-Bix from the Warehouse stores, blaming supply issues. The Warehouse Group is questioning why only its stores are affected and the Commerce Commission is looking into it. Massey University marketing expert Bodo Lang told Tim Dower that it's unusual to target just one retailer. He says it's something we don't see very often, and the way Sanitarium has handled it doesn't help as it hasn't clarified why only The Warehouse has been shutout. There are concerns pyramid schemes disguised as mentorships are targeting a wave of young people. RNZ has spoken to more than a dozen people, mostly based in Wellington, who have been approached by strangers on the streets claiming to be 'entrepreneurs' and offering mentorship. Others have friends who have become involved. Once involved, members pay a fee to a mentor, and also pay to attend conferences which promise to teach them leadership skills, and eventually searches for new recruits. One man told RNZ he expressed interest and underwent several calls, with homework given each time. When he questioned the programme his mentor hung up on him. Another says they have several friends involved, who all use similar buzzwords like 'financial freedom' and 'breaking out of the nine to five'. It is not clear whether all were approached by the same scheme or whether several are operating. Massey University business school marketing professor Bodo Lang says due to secrecy around such schemes, getting exact numbers on its prevalence is near impossible.
There is an expectation McDonald's will address charging loyal app users higher prices. Users have taken to complain on social networking site Reddit, after pointing out a $3 difference between what app users and casual customers are charged. McDonald's says the prices may be different to entice some customers to return to the app. But Massey University marketing professor Bodo Lang told Roman Travers it's doing the opposite. He says companies want people to engage with it and this personalisation of prices is counterintuitive. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EY data indicates that 65 percent of people believe these home brand products satisfy their needs as much as branded products. The data also shows Gen Z are less willing to buy private label products than Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials. It's thought Countdown's $400 million rebrand is a waste of time, money and poor timing as many Kiwis struggle to pay for their groceries. The supermarket chain will revert back to Woolworths early next year, 12 years after changing to Countdown. Sign changes start next month, along with store upgrades. Massey University Marketing expert, Bodo Lang, told Kate Hawkesby there's a danger the Australian ownership becomes more noticeable in the rebrand, and puts New Zealanders off. New Zealand's supermarket industry could be in for a major overhaul today. The Commerce Commission will release its final report from its market study of the industry this morning. Last year's draft found a lack of competition between supermarkets. The commission could make a range of recommendations, including asking supermarkets to divest their wholesale divisions. Auckland University Marketing Lecturer Bodo Lang told Kate Hawkesby he's expecting meaningful change to come from this. “I think we will see something that is a fairly deep restructuring of the sector, otherwise a lot of people will say ‘why didn't we do more?' We're seeing more and more businesses and corporations coming out and taking stances on social issues.Basically, they want to show everyone how woke they are.A perfect example of that is pride month. Many brands launch new campaigns and products, to show, yes we too love gay people. But there's growing criticism for companies that use social issues as a way of promoting their business.Marketing professor Dr. Bodo Lang told Kate Hawkesby customers become sceptical when organisations appear to show support during periods that they know they're being watched.“Brands want to be seen as authentically supporting a cause.
