Sugar taxes are in place in several countries including Mexico and the UK. And they're evolving. Maybe you've noticed that some sweet fizzy drinks are getting more expensive? Buying drinks with added sugar has an extra cost, which is commonly known as sugar tax. It's a way to discourage people from consuming too much sugar - something which can lead to poor health if consumed in excess. But do these sugar taxes work? Research shows sugary drinks and alcohol intake are strongly linked to faster hair loss, with younger men experiencing baldness patterns that typically appear a decade earlier A systematic review covering over 61,000 participants confirmed low vitamin D and iron levels consistently worsen hair loss, highlighting how nutrient deficiencies directly weaken follicles Sugary drinks spike insulin and fuel inflammation, narrowing scalp blood vessels and starving follicles of oxygen and nutrients, which accelerates thinning and weakens regrowth cycles Men with male pattern baldness consumed nearly twice as many sugary drinks weekly compared to men without hair loss, proving diet is a visible risk factor Cutting sugary beverages, eliminating alcohol, restoring vitamin D through safe sun, and boosting iron intake with nutrient-rich foods are direct steps to protect hair and overall health

Australia: it's time for a sugary drinks tax. Sugary drinks are the biggest single source of sugar in our diets, and they increase people's risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes. While Australian health experts have been calling for a tax on sugary drinks for many years, our new report Sickly sweet: It's time for a sugary drinks tax, outlines why now and why Australia is lagging behind our international peers. In this podcast, report authors Peter Breadon and Jessica Geraghty discuss how a sugary drinks tax can improve Australians' health, with host Kat Clay. Many primary schools across the country have implemented “water only” policies, due to the low nutritional value of sugary drinks and their high impact on hospital visits among children. However, sugary drinks remain available at some primary schools and many intermediate and secondary schools, where they continue to greatly impact students' oral and physical health. Traditional soft drinks, juice boxes, and energy and sports drinks are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, an ingredient also found in many processed foods. The body processes fructose differently than other sugars, and fructose can lead to weight gain by encouraging the body to store energy. Dr. Richard Johnson and Dr. Dominic D'Agostino discuss the issues with fructose, how fructose can drive food cravings and overeating, how fructose might be an Alzheimer's contributor, and the potential benefits of a different sugar that might promote the release of GLP-1, the hormone that Ozempic and Wegovy help increase. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Stress and your perception of stress impact your brain and bodyManaging stress is about finding the ‘stress shields' that fit them, feel right, and they believe – for example, breathwork, reminding yourself of past successes, distance from stress, calling on confidant, etc.Stress can lead to obesity and insulin resistance: there's a tendency to a greater reward response from food – the more insulin resistant you are, the more your reward center lights up during stressCravings hijack the prefrontal cortex – body scan draws attention inward toward interoception and away from external stimulusAt our core, we want to know with certainty what's going to happen and control our future – being comfortable with uncertainty is a huge stress resilience factorTips to navigate stress: journal to create a coherent narrative; practice radical acceptance, learning when to paddle and when to give into the wave; practice breathwork and body scans to increase interoception and reduce exteroception; use exercise to burn negative energy and improve stress resilienceRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, my guest is Elissa Epel, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the author of a new book entitled The Stress Prescription. We discuss her work showing how stress impacts mood, eating behavior, mental health, physical health, and aging. She explains stress intervention tools using “top-down” techniques (e.g., radical acceptance, mindfulness, reframing), body-based methods (e.g., breathwork) including the Wim Hof Method, exercise, meditation, body scans, and environmental shifts proven to help people cease unhealthy rumination patterns. We discuss how stress can positively impact psychology and sense of purpose, how stress affects cellular aging, how our narratives of stressful events impact our mood and biology, and how to effectively reframe stress. She explains science-based techniques to break stress-induced cycles of craving and overeating and thereby improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic health. In this episode, my guest is Elissa Epel, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the author of a new book entitled The Stress Prescription.
