He added: “I felt like things happened to us, not because of us.”According to Martel, the closure of Newshub should be taken as a signal for action. “It was a strong and important part of New Zealand media. It's now gone.“We need to act. Because if we don't act, we can see the train that's coming down the tracks at us.“The problem is not the quality of what we do, it's the monetisation of what we do. If we don't change what we do now, if we don't embrace AI, if we don't embrace different ways of doing what we've always done, then there will be an extinction-level event for everyone in this room in ten years, if not sooner.”And Pritchard urged a rethink for where the industry spends its marketing budgets: “We spent a lot of time letting international technology players come to every market and sell, sell, sell at really low costs. And that disrupted the media. It challenged the content and the quality of that content. And then when they disrupted it, they decided to put the prices up.“And it's a pretty simple economic environment that we're all facing. The thing we can do to counter it is we can own our own content. We can own our own customer.“We decided that it was just better to throw money at something that continually worked, right? Those metrics of return on ad spend and cost of customer acquisition -they were really attractive for a long time.“Now they're less attractive, but everyone's hooked on it. So maybe we need to go cold turkey for a little bit.”The event was organised by Unmade with the support of NZME, Lumo and Scentre Group's BrandSpace.Ooh Media's turnaround beginsOoh Media will likely soon make it official with its acting chief revenue officer Mark Fairhurst after his first two months in the chair sparked a turnaround in the company's sales trajectory. The emergency appointment of Fairhurst, previously executive general manager of QMS, came in December following the exit of chief revenue officer Paul Sigaloff after just 19 months. In its full-year results released this morning, Ooh Media's revenue and profits were virtually flat for the year, up by 0.3% to $635.6m and 3% to $287m respectivelyOoh Media's 2023 and 2024 results were almost identical. However the company's momentum entering the first quarter has radically improvedOoh Media is on track to bring in 14% more revenue in the current quarter compared to the same time last year.CEO Cathy O'Connor again acknowledged that Ooh Media's sales operation has been slow and hard to deal with. She told today's analysts' call: “We heard from the market that we were slow to respond.”Ooh Media's said its new offering Reo - which assists mid-tier retailers enter the retail media space by outsourcing sales operations and assisting with the digital side - is also picking up momentum. Newly announced clients include Officeworks, Petbarn, and Australia Post, with others in the pipeline.Unmade Index buoyed by Ooh Media and IVE Group resultsOoh Media's improved performance saw it lock in a hefty 15.6% jump in market capitalisation during an action-packed day on the Unmade Index.IVE Group, which also reported solid results today, rose by 6.4% while Seven West Media gained 2.9%.Meanwhile, Nine lost 5.8% as the market continued to digest news of CoStar's bid to buy its majority-owned real estate platform Domain. As a result of the decline of Nine - the biggest weighted stock - the Unmade Index sank by 0.3% to 560.6 points.Best of the Day: News winners; Clems loser; Slater & Gordon's strugglesABC back at the topABC News moved back past News Corp's news.com.au as the site with the biggest audience. Unmade members also get discounted tickets to our events, including our retail media conference Re:Made, which takes place next month.‘The media business is a different game to retailing'Ahead of his appearance at next month's REmade conference, we talk to retail media evangelist and global consultant Colin Lewis about the state of play locally and globally. In the conversation with REmade curator Cat McGinn, Lewis says Australia can lay claim to being among the most sophisticated retail media markets in the world. He cites the media backgrounds of Coles360 boss Paul Brooks and Woolworths Cartology boss Mike Tyquin as key to the growth of the emerging sector. The duo both had deep media backgrounds until they moved across to the retail world. Brooks is a former CEO of Dentsu's Carat and former Sydney sales director for Nine; Tyquin ran outdoor companies Adshel and Eye. That's a mix not necessarily replicated in other markets.According to Lewis: “Setting up an ad network is actually the smallest part of the whole thing. The real thing is that you're in the media business - and the media business it's a different game to retailing.“This is one area where the Australian market is ahead of anyone else. I've worked with a lot of brands in the UK and they haven't quite worked out that ‘the game I'm in, is the media business'. But if you look at the two biggest retail media brands in Australia - Coles and Woolworths, they're led by media people - people who understand media and come from a media background.“Australia is punching above its weight and probably second in the world in terms of its forward thinking and its approach.”Lewi, who is the author of six best practice reports on retail media, focusing on Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, Target, and Instacart also writes a regular column for our RE:Made newsletter. His clients include the likes of Ferrero Rocher, Glambia, Colgate, and retailer clients like Superdrug, The Very Group, and Warehouse Group.During the conversation, Lewis also tackles the imminent arrival of Nine into the space with its RTLX play, announced at their Upfronts earlier this month. According to Lewis, he has “question marks” about the move. And he also addresses the growing presence of Amazon and offers a theory on how it has taken its hold . “We've got some new data showing that Amazon Prime is really far and away leading the pack in terms of TV on demand. It's almost as though Amazon has built it backwards. They've started with a marketplace and they've traveled up the funnel.”RE:Made returns to Sydney on October 11. Along with Lewis, Brooks and Tyquin are all among the confirmed speakers. With the current Delta outbreak we are confident they will act decisively and work with us to make it happen."He told the Herald relevant Government ministers had been willing to consider all options but he feared the push to import the tests for use within businesses could get bogged down at the Ministry of Health.''We asked for a workplace opportunity to try these antigen testing units three or four weeks ago but it was stymied by the ministry.''There was heavy demand for the kits - priced at around $10 - around the world and he was worried this could lead to a shortage if this country didn't act quickly to import them.Testing didn't replace vaccination as the most important way of fighting Covid, said Braid but was another tool.''Business has been trying to assist the Government and the ministry and we feel we have a vital role to play.''Rapid antigen tests are used widely overseas as an additional tool to curb the spread of Covid-19, providing on-the-spot results in minutes to help identify chains of transmission, provide reassurance to employees and ensure workplace continuity. The 25 companies, which are looking to procure 370,000 tests via medical supplies wholesaler and distributor EBOS Healthcare, have written to the Government seeking emergency clearance to import the tests within the next seven days. The tests, which would not take the place of existing PCR tests for border workers or those who are experiencing symptoms, provide results in about 15 minutes, unlike PCR tests which can take days to return results.Five of the six rapid tests under consideration are approved and in use in Australia with final option currently under an approvals process, the coalition says.Foodstuffs North Island chief executive Chris Quin said the company was focused on keeping its staff and cu...

Heather du Plessis-Allan: Business leaders need to stop pulling punches on Government criticism

Business leaders are going to have to be a little more courageous if they want anybody to care about the struggles that they're having with the government at the moment.Because from what I can see, they're pulling their punches. This morning, the embargo lifted on the fact that some of our most distinguished and senior members of the business community - Joan Withers, chair of The Warehouse Group, Patrick Strange, chair of Auckland Airport and Chorus, Rob Campbell, chair of SkyCity and Tourism Holdings - have joined together to call on the government for more transparency on how the government plans to get us back out into the world operating normally again. But if you liste4ned to the interviews they gave, read the press release they wrote, you'd have no idea what's really going on. You'd think most things are pretty good, but they just want to help a little bit and have a bit of a plan. That's not what's going on. The business community is extremely frustrated.  They are often being ignored when they make suggestions or try to help. They have no clarity on basic plans like even when there might be a trans-Tasman bubble. They are unable to get key workers into the country. And they have watched the power shift to Wellington bureaucrats who have no idea how to run an economy. But you wouldn't know that from listening to them this morning. They just said they'd like to see the plan and know when the vaccines are and we really want to be included in helping. Now I understand that there is a general fear of taking on this government because of the popularity of the pm and the health response. And I have been watching for nearly a year as more and more critical voices stop being critical. You tell me when the last time was that even Business NZ had something tough to say. I get that there is concern that if you go too hard you will get blowback. I hope that this is just the start of a campaign from these guys and that they will increase their criticism to a most honest level, because I'd like to see some courage form business leaders. There are holes all over the place here. Auckland is in its eleventh week of lockdowns. That's nearly three months, that's unacceptable when you compare us to Australia's New South Wales, as I did yesterday, that hasn't had a single lockdown across the entire state or even across Sydney - just ongoing restrictions. Unless our leaders are prepared to say it out loud and draw attention to the failings, people won't know that we can do better and that others are doing better.

While it's possible for any company to transform, the adoption of new technology doesn't constitute digital transformation. And it's not a big bang deliverable.Nor is it something that you can copy from other organisations - each transformation journey is personal. Transformation is a series of iterative change that a business undertakes in order to shift their model. And it has nothing to do with technology - that is only the enabler, not the outcome. Transformation is a goal, not a deliverable. Afterall, you don't make a butterfly by sticking wings on a caterpillar. So how do you deliver successful transformation?Where should the CIO sit during change? How do you communicate to different audiencesAnd how do you know you're done?In today's episode, I talk with Owen McCall about digital transformationAbout OwenWhile a qualified accountant Owen has worked with and in technology for all of his career.  He is a passionate believer in the power of technology to not only fundamentally transform how we live, work, and play but also to deliver tremendous value to organisations.  With that in mind, the premise of all of Owen's work is that organisations should only invest in technology because they believe it will make their business better. This however is easier said than done. Through his work Owen continually witnesses organisations struggling to deliver value from their IT investments.  Wondering why this is, Owen has dedicated high career to understanding this phenomenon and supporting organisations to improve the value they receive from their IT investments.   Owen is  the author of High-Performance IT, a collection of short stories and unique IP that provides insights into IT leadership and delivering on the promise of technology.  A qualified accountant, Owen was a partner in Deloitte Consulting  for over 5 years and led Deloitte's Australasian outsourcing business before returning to New Zealand to take up the position of CIO of The Warehouse Group.  He's  regular blogger and contributor to CIO and iStart publications, event speaker and judge of industry awards including CIO 100 and the NZ Hi Tech Awards.
