On today's episode, I talk to musicians Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson, the founders and 2/3 of the Bay Area band Sour Widows. Originally meeting and becoming friends at Camp Winnarainbow in their youth, Maia and Susanna formed Sour Widows in 2017, when they found themselves living near one another for the first time. Eventually they invited drummer Max Edelman to join them in the band, and since then, they've released two fantastic EPs, a self-titled one in 2020 and Crossing Over in 2021. In 2023, they recorded their first full-length album Revival of a Friend at Tiny Telephone, and it will be released on Exploding In Sound Records at the end of the month! So excited to share this exciting and absurd episode of #NoSuggestionPod with this week's guest, actor, clown, teacher, humanitarian, content creator, and improv comedian, the powerful Riley Soloner (@rileysoloner)! Guest co-host Christopher Morucci (@christophermorucci) and I run the gamut with Riley, learning about his epic journey, starting as a youth resisting his bohemian, hippie parents encouragement to attend the legendary summer Camp Winnarainbow, going back every year for more than a decade, working with the real Patch Adams, charitable clown trips, diving into the NYC improv scene at the UCB, his pandemic era Twitch show Googy Mornings, wide vs deep reach, meeting his wife as a result of part of the legendary Chris Gethard show, and much more more. In the midst of unspooling this epic tale, we really manage to get some really funny improv scenes in, including a deranged scene about a bodybuilder doing a hunger-strike at his gym. We loved recording this episode so much. Riley is so fun, and also so full of life, and sharp. We can't wait for you to hear this episode! If you enjoy it please rate, and subscribe, and tell a friend! You can learn more about Ralf, his comedy, his music (as Precious Gorgeous), his acting, his teaching, this podcast, find full episodes of this podcast, and more at preciousgorgeous.com!

You'll hear Wavy tell the guys about his friendship with Bob Dylan when they lived atop the Gaslight Cafe in New York City, opening for John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, and taking walks with Albert Einstein. The guys also discuss Wavy's Seva Foundation which helps develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight for the blind, the early days of the Grateful Dead, and Wavy's circus and arts summer camp, Camp Winnarainbow.Wavy Gravy is an American entertainer and peace activist best known for his role at Woodstock, as well as for his contributions to the counterculture movement in the 1960s. But these accolades barely scratch the surface in telling the whole story about the positive impact that he's had on the planet. Along with Jahanara, his wife of over fifty years, Wavy has brought joy and helped to relieve suffering for countless people around the globe, largely through his favorite projects- the Seva Foundation and Camp Winnarainbow. Wavy has been called “clown prince of the counterculture” by Entertainment Weekly, “a saint in a clown suit” by Bob Weir, and “the illegitimate son of Harpo Marx and Mother Teresa” by Paul Krassner. Phil, Jake and Jason are reunited with Natalie H. to rank Harry Styles and clowns on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help choose which item on the List of Every Damn Thing should be re-ranked in an upcoming episode (you can vote every day, and for multiple items). If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Harry Styles has a role in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. It's not a major role, but it's bigger than the role of Guy Looking at Camera. Charli XCX is a pop star and songwriter from the UK. You know her voice from the hooks on "I Love It" and "Fancy". Phil appreciates her but doesn't know the name for what her fans call themselves (a la Harry Styles' “Stylers”) so he's kind of noncommittal in his fandom. Harry Styles' fingernail polish line is called Pleasing and the pre-sale is already sold out. We make the obvious comparison of Harry Styles to Prince, and express doubts as to whether Styles is a songwriter on the level of Prince. Jake looked into it, and found that Harry Styles is in fact a songwriter (including songs for other artists), but unlike Prince he doesn't appear to have sole credit on any songs. Also, he's nowhere near as prolific a songwriter as Prince (at least so far). Natalie is right when she says Billy Porter wore the Christian Siriano tux dress design to the Oscars in 2019.  Here's the Vogue Magazine Harry Styles story that we discuss. “Hungry Heart” was written by Bruce Springsteen for the Ramones. If you listen to the song, you can hear how he sings it sort of like Joey Ramone and you can also imagine how Joey Ramone would have sung it. People have tried to recreate it. Phil likes to imagine it would have sounded like a song on End of the Century. It's not clear why they never recorded the song. According to Andrew Dice Clay, My Cousin Vinny was developed as a vehicle for him, but when The Adventures of Ford Fairlane flopped, they made it with Joe Pesci instead. In an impressive feat of inference and detective work, Phil and his wife figured this out by themselves. She said that it seemed like the part was written for someone younger and they just wracked their brains thinking of Italian-American comedic actors from the early 90s until they figured it out. Pee-Wee Herman maybe could have worked playing the title role in My Cousin Vinny but probably he shouldn't have done Italian-Face. We briefly discuss the Insane Clown Posse and how our podcast is pro-Juggalo. Bill Irwin is the king of clowns. Oscar-winner Julianne Moore plays a sexy clown in The Ladies' Man. “Tears of a Clown” by Smokey Robinson is one of the greatest pop songs to ever be recorded. Here's the Cecily Strong clown bit that was on Saturday Night Live. Bianca del Rio is the winner of Season 6 of Rupaul's Drag Race and is often referred to as the “Clown in a Gown”. Jake refers to “Wavy Gravy's Clown College” but it's actually a Clown Camp called Camp Winnarainbow. It's still in operation. Talk about glamping! Pickle Family Circus was a troupe in San Francisco in the ‘70's and is said to have brought back the circus trend.  The Man Who Laughs is a 1928 German film. Conrad Veidt's look in the title role is where the look of the Joker from Batman was pulled from in 1940.  None of us could say for sure what the capital city of Tennessee is. It's Nashville.  Jake was wrong when he said San Francisco was never the capital of California. It was temporarily made the capitol in 1862 while Sacramento suffered from flooding. There was naver a capital building in San Francisco, though; the state legislature was held at the Merchants' Exchange Building during the brief tenure in S.F. The I Love Lucy episode featuring Pepito the Clown that Jason refers to was actually a pilot episode that never aired during the original run of the show, and was apparently lost for decades. We ponder whether the term “hobo” is offensive, and decide that it isn't. But we might be wrong. Violator from Spawn is a pretty sucky character. It’s the End of My Trip by Dr. Larry Brilliant Sometime in the mid-90s we were on this land in Mendocino County. Wavy, Wavy’s wife Jah, my wife Girija, and I have a piece of land in Mendocino County, where Wavy has this remarkable Camp Winnarainbow. We were having a concert; it may have been called The Kate Wolf Concert at the time. There were about 5,000 people attending a Los Lobos concert on this land. At one point Wavy was on stage, and he had his microphone and a megaphone. While he was introducing them, he looked off in the distance at Route 101. You could see from the stage, coming down the road, coming towards the concert grounds, was a bus. As it got closer, you could see this was a psychedelic-painted bus. As it got closer and closer, I saw it said FURTHUR II. The crowd split in order to allow this bus to drive in, approaching the stage. The music stopped, Wavy was on stage, with his microphone, and as the bus got closer and closer Wavy was saying to the group, “I think it’s Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters.” The bus stopped like a Vulcan Starship looking at The Starship Enterprise decloaking. They’d all got their phasers on “stun.” Kesey made his way to the top of the bus and opened the hatch. He’d got a microphone and a megaphone himself. He yelled out, “Wavy, how are you?” Wavy says, “Welcome, Ken, nice to see you. You’re interrupting our concert.” Kesey responds: “I brought FURTHUR here and The Merry Pranksters, but I also have a great guest here. Wavy, don’t you agree we have failed to honor the elders of this movement we’re part of as much as we should?” Wavy and Kesey are having this conversation; 5,000 people were listening from the stage and the top of the bus. Kesey continued, “Well, I brought an elder with me that I think that we should honor. His name is Timothy Leary.” Making his way up the steps at the top of the bus from the inside was Timothy Leary in a sorcerer’s outfit and his little wizard pointy scepter. He was very thin and obviously dying of liver cancer. He struggled and got to the top of the bus, raised his wizard’s wand, and went around in a circle blessing all 5,000 people. Then he looked to Wavy and said, “Wavy, I’m dying; it’s the end of my trip. It’s been a wonderful trip. I’m not afraid of dying.” Kesey took the microphone and said, “Wavy, I think we need to honor Tim Leary now. What I have in mind is canonizing Tim Leary. Wavy, do you agree that Tim Leary should be canonized?” Wavy replied, “Yes, of course, but how will you canonize Tim Leary?” Kesey said, “I’m glad you asked.” We started to hear this sound of a motor grinding and something being elevated onto the top of the bus. After a lot of grinding, suddenly you saw he’d got this real cannon on top of the bus. Kesey announced, “I brought my own cannon to canonize Tim Leary.” Everyone was getting a little nervous. It was a crowded area and it was a big cannon. Kesey struck a match, the kind you would see in a comic book. He put it on the end of the cannon and there was a “boom,” but not a great blast. From the cannon came confetti and stars that showered down on everybody at the concert. Kesey said, “I hereby canonize Tim Leary.” The crowd went wild and Wavy went wild. That was the Theatre of Ken Kesey. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Hugh Romney, named Wavy Gravy by B.B. King , was one of the stage announcers at the three major Woodstock music festivals ( 1969 , 1994 and 1999 ), as well as other related events over the years. The counterculture figure also made a name for himself supporting the Seva Foundation , as well as hosting his own Camp Winnarainbow in California. But his story is rich with many other chapters and experiences, from meeting Albert Einstein as a child, to having Lenny Bruce as his manager at one point. Ahead of his return to MC at the sold out Seva benefit Saturday on Maui honoring Ram Dass , he spoke to HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence about his, no pun intended, colorful life. José García has a beautiful voice. I can always tell when he’s singing even if I’m not watching. I particularly admire that he’s been part of Camp Winnarainbow for the past 23 years. We met many years ago through our shared tribe of Pregones Theater and worked together on Promise of a Love Song, an original dramatic-musical created by Roadside Theater, Junebug Theater and Pregones Theater. His present passion is a music project in homage to Pedro Dávila Ortíz, a k a Davilita, one of the greatest voices to come out of Puerto Rico, and is a symbol of the Puerto Rican diaspora. José has known and studied Davilita’s life and works for years and with his band, The Rubi Band, Davilita’s work is refreshed and played on and with, the sounds of the times. Starting September 23 The Rubi Band will play at Don Pedro in Williamsburg, for 8-weeks on Fridays from 7pm -9pm.

The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir once called Wavy Gravy “a saint in a clown suit.” Wavy started his career as Hugh Romney, a poet and avant- garde comedian in the Beatnik era of the late nineteen fifties. A friend and protégé of Lenny Bruce and Allen Ginsberg, Wavy had the idea to combine poetry readings with folk and jazz in Greenwich Village in the early sixties, and was Bob Dylan’s roommate when Dylan wrote “A Hard Rain A Gonna Fall” He was then a pioneer of the purest aspect of hippie culture, a protégé of Ken Kesey. Wavy and others then formed the commune The Hog Farm which toured America in the sixties bringing psychedelic notions of peace and love to the heartland and was famously in charge of security, food, and chilling out people with bad trips at the Woodstock Festival. Soon thereafter he was given the name Wavy Gravy by BB King. Wavy was also deeply involved in the movement to stop the War in Viet Nam. I recently went to a Graham Nash show where he told the audience that he wrote the song “Chicago” about the 1968 protest outside of the Democratic Convention explicitly at Wavy’s suggestion and Wavy was also involved with may direct actions to end the war. SEVA has been funded, in part by a series of benefit concerts Wavy has created over the years featuring the Grateful Dead, Jackson Brow, Buffy Saint Marie, Crosby Stills and Nash Bonnie Raitt and Steve Earle among others. "When Wavy Gravy calls, you don’t say no to the guy," says David Crosby. "All he wants to do it help people." Wavy also started and still runs He started Camp Winnarainbow a circus and performing arts camp for all ages. He is the author of two books The Hog Farm and Friends (1974) and Something Good For A Change: Random Notes On Peace Thru Living (1992) and is the subject a great documentary directed by Michelle Esick called Saint Misbehavin’
