Lisa Law's still, movie and video images have chronicled decades of social and cultural changes in America. And her film, ‘Flashing On The Sixties,' was described by actor-director Dennis Hopper as “the most compelling, moving documentary of the Sixties”. In 1966, Lisa and her husband resided in the renowned "Castle" in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, a hub that welcomed numerous prominent musicians, including Bob Dylan. She shares stories from Dylan's stay and offers her perspective on the recent film, A Complete Unknown. Lisa was also part of the Hog Farm commune, and they were tasked with keeping the peace at Woodstock ‘69. Yet, her efforts at the festival were integral to its success - from managing the trip tents to mobilizing members of the Hog Farm and other festival goers so that they were able to feed over 200,000 people! She also played a role in the organization of Woodstock '99, and was featured in the recent Netflix documentary, "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99." In our discussion, we explore the stark contrasts between the two festivals and how insights from '69 might have prevented the latter's challenges. Lisa was there for all the seminal pop culture moments of the 1960s, capturing them with her beautiful photos. And she's one of the very few people that can say she's been to all 3 Woodstock festivals!

Although she grew up in the freezing winters of New York, Keisha Cameron and her husband decided to move their young family to a rural spot outside Atlanta, Georgia, to set down roots and rebuild their collection to the land. They began with raising what their family needed for food and other daily necessities, but over the past decade, High Hog Farm has developed stocks of rare-breed sheep, angora rabbits, and chickens. In their gardens, the family cultivate produce as well as medicinal and dye plants. As returning-generation farmers, they not only love what they do, they also feel an obligation as stewards of their land. Rediscovering the traditional ways of cultivating and using plants, Keisha has sampled different types of indigo, madder, marigolds, and a range of dyestuffs. The farm offers naturally dyed fibers as well as dyestuffs and classes in natural dyeing. As she grows attuned to her soil, she appreciates the multiple roles that a single plant can play. As a seedkeeper, she focuses on not only preserving a diversity of plants but on reviving the knowledge of how they can serve a variety of needs. Although High Hog has been home to a variety of different farm animals, Keisha fell in love with sheep. She felt an instant affinity for Gulf Coast Natives, a rare breed that can carry color genetics and are exceptionally well suited to her location. Her insistence on participating fully in the lives of her animals has led her to explore fiber arts—but also to learn the demanding skill of shearing. As a crucial part of her animals' health, shearing is too important to leave undone if they can't locate a shearer when needed. For followers around the country, High Hog Farm is mainly accessible through their newly relaunched website and online store (as well as their enchanting social media accounts). For the community closer at hand, the farm has developed a variety of programs in fiber arts, photography, food preservation, and a variety of other agrarian arts. On being part of the grassroots fiber community, Keisha says, “I want to encourage everybody else, all the fiber artists and fiber and dye growers, to keep doing what you're doing, because we are the people who are bringing color to the world.” Links High Hog Farm website (https://highhog.farm/) High Hog Farm's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/highhogfarm/) This episode is brought to you by: Treenway Silks Treenway Silks is where weavers, spinners, knitters and stitchers find the silk they love. Host Mike Sakell sits down with Museum at Bethel Woods director Neal Hitch focusing on the 2023 Special Exhibit The Place Where Peace Happened, exploring how communes such as The Hog Farm promoted volunteerism and the idea that personal action helps a community succeed. Peace was the plan leading up to the start of the Woodstock Festival and peace prevailed. Hitch also reports on his recent travels across the country as part of the Oral History Initiative first launched in 2020, plus new research and mapping of trails on the site of the 1969 festival. Neal Hitch also has thoughts on the future, and how todays generation may focus on peace.
Rural commercial cellular coverage is spotty, and Wi-Fi is not always effective in poultry and livestock barns or, for that matter, in remote locations on the farm and in the country. A lack service and reliability can be frustrating at best but it also can cost farmers and ranchers dollars in lost efficiency and an inability to easily access and track critical data. In this episode, we turn to Sean Horan, Vice President of Sales for GXC, and Nick Moser, Vice President of JBI Distributors and Services, to learn more the operational, biosecurity, and safety advantages of deploying wireless communications utilizing private cellular networking. What is a private cellular network and a cellular mesh? How can they extend wireless coverage throughout an ag enterprise and what they might that mean for your operation or business. September 20, 2022 — Erosion is a form of pollution, especially alongside waterways, as pieces of the terrestrial landscape make their way into rivers and streams, damaging fishbearing habitat. Now, several private landowners in Laytonville are working with the Eel River Recovery Project, using EPA money distributed by the State Water Resources Control Board, to remediate over 600 feet of erosion on four creeks that feed into the South Fork of the Eel River. Patrick Higgins, the director of the Eel River Recovery Project, gave an overview on Saturday morning as he led a tour along Cahto Creek. The four projects are “relatively substantial,” he said. “Two on Cahto Creek here, along the Cahto Trail. And one at Mill Creek, above Little Case Creek. And one at Black Oak Ranch along Streeter Creek. And these are all salmonid-bearing streams.” Each site ranges from a hundred feet to about 180 feet long, so Higgins notes that “they're pretty big open sores, where dirt's pouring into the creek. And that's not good for the private land interests, but it's also a form of pollution,” which fills in downstream pools and salmon nests. It can also cause rivers to get shallower, widening and heating up as the cold water comes to the surface. The Eel River Recovery Project sent surveys to all the landowners in the basin, asking them if they had problems with riparian erosion, then chose to work on the four sites that had the highest potential for sediment pollution and the most significance for fish habitat. The work is scheduled to take place between July and October of next year. Mostly, it consists of engineering features that will affect the velocity of the river where its flows have been altered by human activity — or the lack of it, like building bridges and roads, and allowing conifers to overtop oak forests and absorb groundwater that some scientists believe would otherwise join the river.Dennis Hogan owns property near what he calls the Mulligan Bridge. He's working on improving forest health and remediating a section of riverbank that he says has receded steadily since he moved onto the place in 1989. He's also raising willow and other riparian saplings to plant on the newly engineered riverbank, once the heavy machinery gets out of the way. “The streambed is lower than it used to be, by quite a bit,” he told visitors on Saturday. The nearby bridge has concrete abutments, which could account for narrowing the river channel, causing the water to rush through with great velocity. And Hogan said the rate of erosion seems to have increased since a large oak on the riverbank came down about five years ago. Philip Buehler is the foreman of BioEngineering Associates in Laytonville, which designs riverbank stabilization projects. On Saturday afternoon, he told a small group of landowners and nature lovers about the forces at work in the creek under Mulligan Bridge. He's taken a lead role in designing the structures that will be installed next year, and will be in charge of the crew that puts them in“What's happening here is really common on creeks,” he said. “You can see we're on a slight outside bend of the creek here on this side. With any outside bend, the water is moving faster over here than it is on the inside…we have all this blackberry and other vegetation that is strengthening that side of the creek. You can see where Dennis has cleared, just behind the blackberry, it's really sandy, fine sediment. During high flows, when that part of the bank is inundated over there, you're getting slower water velocity in all of that vegetation. The vegetation is absorbing the energy of the flowing creek, and slowing the water down. When it's slowed down, sediment drops out and gets deposited over there. That's what's moving this creek eighty feet this way, is sediment being deposited over there, vegetation growing up over time. Over here (on the eroded side), we have no erosion-resistant vegetation, so it's stronger over there than it is over here.”Buehler took a few moments to talk more about bioengineering at the end of the tour on Streeter Creek at the Hog Farm. That's another erosion site where a section of fencing dangles in midair about ten feet from the edge of the riverbank. “Bioengineering is a type of technology where we build living structures, generally out of locally harvested willow plants,” he said. “So we build our structures out of rock, live willow, and erosion control fabrics…the gist of it is, the projects are living things. They grow over time, they stabilize the river bank, and they have a lot of benefits for the creek in general.”At Hogan's property, Buehler plans to put in five structures made out of boulders, live willow branches, and root wads to coax the river into creating more deep water pools for young salmonids. “What we want to do here is move the channel, so it's flowing in the middle here, more to that side, rather than against this bank,” he explained. He expects the root wads to create turbulence in the channel as the water flows over them, scouring out a pool downstream, giving the fish a place to spend the summer, “until it rains, and we get a creek here again.”The next day, Laytonville got well over an inch and a half of rain.
There is an old idiom that says when the pendulum goes one way, it's bound to swing back the other. Our guest, my old acquaintance and esteemed academic, Dr. Mariavittoria Mangini, has found that phrase applies to many aspects of her life. While we may be in precarious and difficult times, Mariavittoria has managed to stay positive, knowing that things can always change for the better. We sit down to have a full and wide-ranging conversation on politics, the state of the nation, privilege, and, of course, the profoundly lasting impression psychedelics have made on her life."I feel like I've had a lot more adventures and a lot more color and texture in my life because of those experiences."Mariavittoria Mangini, Ph.D., FNP has written extensively on the impact of psychedelic experiences in shaping the lives of her contemporaries and has worked closely with many of the most distinguished investigators in this field. She is one of the founders of the Women's Visionary Council, a nonprofit organization that supports investigations into non-ordinary forms of consciousness and organizes gatherings of researchers, healers, artists, and activists whose work explores these states. She is Professor Emerita in the School of Science, Allied Health, and Nursing at Holy Names University and a visiting scholar at the Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. There aren't very many original Beatniks left on planet earth and as of this writing, Wavy Gravy is one of the last original Beatnik poets standing. But Wavy isn't just an original Beatnik poet - he's also a improv comedy trailblazer and international comedic activist who's antics included running a pig for president. This series travels from Wavy's childhood to the Gaslight Café Beatnik years to San Francisco where the convergence of psychedelic and comedy history collided, steering Wavy to Hollywood where his comedy career soared, propelling him to the famed Acid Tests and the birth of his Hog Farm commune, bringing Wavy to the Woodstock Peace and Music Festival's stage enshrining him as a global symbol for peace, love and Rock'n'Roll. Wavy's historic and hilarious adventures include his involvement in countless cultural watershed moments in American history… like the fabrication of snapping for applause, the introduction of granola to hippies and in fact, the actual creation of the ethos of the hippie. American Prankster is a chronological deep dive with Wavy, unfolding never-before-heard stories about his life that even he had forgotten until interviews with Rainbow Valentine from Disorganized Crime: Smuggler's Daughter, retrieved them. Stories about Wavy's psychedelic shenanigans with countless icons like: Lenny Bruce, Groucho Marx, BB King, Janis Joplin, Tiny Tim, Del Close, Ken Kesey, Neal Cassady, Margo St. James, Thelonius Monk, Bob Dylan, Ram Dass, Albert Einstein, Peter, Paul & Mary, Marlene Dietrich, Severin Darden, Joan Baez, Martha Graham, Alice Cooper, David Crosby, Jackson Brown, Abbie Hoffman, Bob Weir, Mama Cass, John Coltrane, Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia, Paul Krassner, Bill Graham, Tim Harden, Robin Williams, Viola Spolin, Pink Floyd and many more. Guests on this series include members of the Hog Farm, the Merry Pranksters, Grateful Dead Family, KMPX, The Committee, the Family Dog, the Medicine Ball Caravan, the Yippies and other counter culture institutions. You've seen the signs; from your local diner to national retail chains and seemingly every business in between, the “help wanted” sign is practically everywhere you turn. Although the COVID pandemic created a complex and confusing labor market on a national scale, the agriculture sector has dealt with labor challenges for a long time, particularly in the areas of live animal production and logistics. One area where food animal producers and processors have turned to overcome domestic labor shortages is across the border.According to HR professional Silvia Castañeda with Eichelberger Farms, producers might be overlooking one specific visa program in their efforts to source foreign workers on their farms. In this episode, Silvia explains some of the specific challenges to recruiting and retaining employees in the swine industry, and about her company's experience with the Trade NAFTA Visa program. This episode of Feedstuffs In Focus is sponsored by Topigs Norsvin, the second largest swine genetics company in the world. The TN70 is the flagship parent sow of Topigs Norsvin, described as being a self-reliant sow capable of raising her own pigs and requiring less human intervention in the farrowing house. When challenged with finding qualified employees, hire the TN70. Visit tn70.topigsnorsvin.com to see what producers are saying about their experience with the TN70.
The biggest issue facing most hog farms today is a shortage of workers, according to Laura Bruner, DVM, Swine Vet Center, St. Peter, Minnesota.“If you ask (producers) what their challenges are in their day-to-day life, it's finding labor and enough labor to be able to take care of the sows and get the production they want,” she said.
"Woodstock 1969: I Was There"Stan Worth of Indianapolis attended the Woodstock music festival in August of 1969—an event that epitomized the 1960s counter-culture at its best. At least 400,000 young people came together at Max Yasgur's dairy farm to celebrate peace, love and great music. During an interview with Steve and Kate, Stan shares his first-person stories of being there: Candid, funny, and yes, inspiring. The Bands, the Mud, the DrugsStan remembers wonderful musical performances, from opener Richie Havens (forced to play three hours because traffic jams kept other groups from getting there) to breakout performances by then-unknown artists like Carlos Santana and Joe Cocker. Despite the huge crowd, he had an unexpected encounter with someone he knew. And the "trip" he took with Wavy Gravy's Hog Farm commune ... well. It Could Have Been a Disaster, But ... Despite the lack of food and water, and rains that turned the ground into a muddy mess, Stan's memories of the pure joy rising from the Woodstock crowd will make you want to tap into your own inner hippie.Popahallics #48 PlaylistGet groovy with our playlist with the artists who played at Woodstock, including CSNY (one of their first shows together), Richie Havens, CCR, and many more. Welcome back hog Stans - New York remains mayorless; Vin Diesel's real name stinks; and Sam has basically zero opinion on Regis Philbin. Seinfeld is off streaming, but luckily, it's burned into our minds indelibly (and available on DVD). Dan is yet again begging for 420 Twitter followers. He's also recounting some stories, including: spotting a Beto 2020 holdout, shouting at a moving truck driver, and discussing Israel-Palestine with an elemental denizen of Coney Island. The Army is now admitting that aliens exist, and China is to blame. We're thinking about fish, and of course we found a fish that is also a hog. We're also answering some tough questions: how do we navigate going back to maskless offices, taking it on faith that everyone in there is vaccinated, and attempting to relearn our social skills? And, more importantly, is calling the cocktail of whiskey, Irish cream, and Guinness an Irish Car Bomb the equivalent of naming a drink “The 9/11?” If so, what goes in the latter? His Shoes and a Note Fourteen of us got busted at Ken Kesey’s house for pot. We went to court, and our lawyer made a deal where we all got off except Ken. The reason was that Neal Cassady had already been busted twice for felonies. In California if he went down for another felony, he’d be in jail for another ten or fifteen years. So they made the deal that Ken would take the rap and the rest of us would go free. When it came time for Kesey to show up in court and get his conviction, he didn’t show up. He “committed suicide.” He left his shoes and a note on the beach in California and disappeared. What really happened was a buddy of his drove him down to Mexico in an old truck. We knew about it, but the rest of us were still doing the Acid Tests in LA. We had the bus down there, we had a place to stay, and we were doing these shows every Saturday night. The Hog Farm had joined up for that. LSD was going to become illegal the next day in California. So after the Acid Tests, we jumped on the bus and headed down to Mexico. We went way down in Mexico, on the ocean. We stayed there six months till our visas expired and we came back along with Kesey. During that time my first wife came down with my kids to visit. My second wife was down there and gave birth to our daughter Casa. Mountain Girl birthed Sunshine Kesey in Mexico. They’re about a month apart in age. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

If you follow agricultural law at all, you've likely seen news from North Carolina that a number of nuisance lawsuits that were filed against Smithfield Foods subsidiary Murphy Brown have resulted in two multi-million dollar verdicts in favor of the plaintiffs. Many of the operations targeted in these lawsuits have been in existence for years and were not violating any state of federal statutes. This has sent shock waves throughout North Carolina and the country and is particularly concerning to agricultural operations who wonder whether they could face this type of action. Our guest today is Jake Parker, State Legislative Director for the North Carolina Farm Bureau. Jake walks though the history of the lawsuits currently pending in North Carolina, offers some thoughts on various strategic decisions that have been made in the litigation, reports on the results of the first two lawsuits, and discusses a recent amendment to the North Carolina Right to Farm Act in an attempt to protect farmers from these type of lawsuits in the future. In this episode, Paul discusses the recent jury verdict in the North Carolina Hog Farm Nuisance Cases involving Murphy-Brown Farms. The verdict initially awarded the plaintiffs $50 million in punitive damages, but this has been reduced to $3 million. Prior to this decision, the judge had ruled that North Carolina's right-to-farm law did not apply. Paul points out what language was at issue in North Carolina's law and how it might play out in another state. Host: John J. Russell, MD After sitting at the feet of Martin Luther King at the University of Michigan in 1963, Larry Brilliant was swept up into the civil rights movement, marching and protesting across America and Europe. As a radical young doctor he followed the hippie trail from London over the Khyber Pass with his wife Girija, Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm commune to India. There, he found himself in a Himalayan ashram wondering whether he had stumbled into a cult. Instead, one of India’s greatest spiritual teachers, Neem Karoli Baba, opened Larry’s heart and told him his destiny was to work for the World Health Organization to help eradicate killer smallpox. He would never have believed he would become a key player in eliminating a 10,000-year-old disease that killed more than half a billion people in the 20th century alone. Host Dr. John Russell sits down with Dr. Larry Brilliant to discuss his book, Sometimes Brilliant and talk about his amazing journey from Detroit to counter-culture San Francisco to an ashram in India and beyond.

Lessons On Evangelism From My Hog Farm To Yours.
The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir once called Wavy Gravy “a saint in a clown suit.” Wavy started his career as Hugh Romney, a poet and avant- garde comedian in the Beatnik era of the late nineteen fifties. A friend and protégé of Lenny Bruce and Allen Ginsberg, Wavy had the idea to combine poetry readings with folk and jazz in Greenwich Village in the early sixties, and was Bob Dylan’s roommate when Dylan wrote “A Hard Rain A Gonna Fall” He was then a pioneer of the purest aspect of hippie culture, a protégé of Ken Kesey. Wavy and others then formed the commune The Hog Farm which toured America in the sixties bringing psychedelic notions of peace and love to the heartland and was famously in charge of security, food, and chilling out people with bad trips at the Woodstock Festival. Soon thereafter he was given the name Wavy Gravy by BB King. Wavy was also deeply involved in the movement to stop the War in Viet Nam. I recently went to a Graham Nash show where he told the audience that he wrote the song “Chicago” about the 1968 protest outside of the Democratic Convention explicitly at Wavy’s suggestion and Wavy was also involved with may direct actions to end the war. SEVA has been funded, in part by a series of benefit concerts Wavy has created over the years featuring the Grateful Dead, Jackson Brow, Buffy Saint Marie, Crosby Stills and Nash Bonnie Raitt and Steve Earle among others. "When Wavy Gravy calls, you don’t say no to the guy," says David Crosby. "All he wants to do it help people."
