Her career spanned 25 years, first with an in-depth cross-reference of the Warren Report that revealed inconsistencies in the official JFK assassination story, and eventually broadcasting her findings on radio, publishing articles, teaching, and lecturing around the country. John Lennon donated money so Paul Krassner could afford to print Mae Brussell's work in his magazine The Realist.Mae Brussell's research library contains extensive handwritten cross-references and analysis by Mae on such topics as the assassinations of John F. There are thousands of documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence and notes totaling 39 file cabinets, along with hundreds of books (many rare and out-of-print) and two copies of the Warren Report. It is very likely that Mae documented the early activities of current political figures who were just beginning their rise to the positions of power they hold today. The mission of The Mae Brussell Project is to digitize this vast archive and make the materials available online. The Searchers and Rebel Without a Cause were two of his favourites. Always a dreamer, Ochs fantasised that one day he could be a stoic cowboy like John Wayne, a teenage rebel like James Dean, or a rockabilly sex symbol like Elvis Presley. He took his early love of Hollywood with him to New York, where he became one of the most celebrated folk singers in the world, culminating in an album that has just turned 50: Greatest Hits, titled with a savage, knowing irony.Ochs came up in the Greenwich Village folk scene, rattling off songs at a pace that caused Bob Dylan – with whom he had a friendly rivalry – to complain “I just can't keep up with Phil”. But Ochs couldn't cross over like Dylan did. His sole hit song There But for Fortune, which reached No 50 in the US and the Top 10 in the UK, was performed by Joan Baez. The peak of his career took a different form. In 1968, aged 27, Ochs agreed to help organise and perform at the Festival of Life demonstration against the Vietnam war in Chicago's Grant Park, at the Democratic National Convention. During his performance of I Ain't Marching Anymore, one of his most acerbic and damning anti-war songs, bursts of fire sparkled throughout the crowd as young men from across America took the song's message to heart and burned their draft cards. It was a defining moment in Ochs's life and one of his greatest personal achievements. “This is the highlight of my career,” he told journalist Paul Krassner as he walked off stage. He felt like a Hollywood hero...

There aren't very many original Beatniks left on planet earth and as of this writing, Wavy Gravy is one of the last original Beatnik poets standing. But Wavy isn't just an original Beatnik poet - he's also a improv comedy trailblazer and international comedic activist who's antics included running a pig for president. This series travels from Wavy's childhood to the Gaslight Café Beatnik years to San Francisco where the convergence of psychedelic and comedy history collided, steering Wavy to Hollywood where his comedy career soared, propelling him to the famed Acid Tests and the birth of his Hog Farm commune, bringing Wavy to the Woodstock Peace and Music Festival's stage enshrining him as a global symbol for peace, love and Rock'n'Roll. Wavy's historic and hilarious adventures include his involvement in countless cultural watershed moments in American history… like the fabrication of snapping for applause, the introduction of granola to hippies and in fact, the actual creation of the ethos of the hippie. American Prankster is a chronological deep dive with Wavy, unfolding never-before-heard stories about his life that even he had forgotten until interviews with Rainbow Valentine from Disorganized Crime: Smuggler's Daughter, retrieved them. Stories about Wavy's psychedelic shenanigans with countless icons like: Lenny Bruce, Groucho Marx, BB King, Janis Joplin, Tiny Tim, Del Close, Ken Kesey, Neal Cassady, Margo St. James, Thelonius Monk, Bob Dylan, Ram Dass, Albert Einstein, Peter, Paul & Mary, Marlene Dietrich, Severin Darden, Joan Baez, Martha Graham, Alice Cooper, David Crosby, Jackson Brown, Abbie Hoffman, Bob Weir, Mama Cass, John Coltrane, Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia, Paul Krassner, Bill Graham, Tim Harden, Robin Williams, Viola Spolin, Pink Floyd and many more. Guests on this series include members of the Hog Farm, the Merry Pranksters, Grateful Dead Family, KMPX, The Committee, the Family Dog, the Medicine Ball Caravan, the Yippies and other counter culture institutions. John Lennon donated money so Paul Krassner could afford to print Mae Brussell's work in his magazine The Realist.Mae Brussell's research library contains extensive handwritten cross-references and analysis by Mae on such topics as the assassinations of John F. SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTRONICS #58: AN ELECTRIC TOOTH! (And Emergency School Board Meeting) This week's tutorial: Hear a Synthesizer recreate getting a Dental Crown Hi, everyone, welcome back to the show. This week the subject is dentistry. I've always been good about going to the dentist. Give me the chair, man! It's like getting a tattoo every six months on your teeth. But due to the pandemic I hadn't been able to get a cleaning for seventeen months, and one of my few fillings (the silver kind from the 1980s) didn't survive. So, pandemic delay accepted, I received the rough prognosis: I NEEDED A CROWN. So this week is dedicated to that very noisy drilling procedure. Make your own tooth: Using a blend of contrasting highly modulated voltage into filters and pitch on a few synths, we emulate the musical scraping and drilling of the experience. Eurorack and event generators provide a good amount of variety to add in sounds of water, random bits of flying pieces, suction, etc. Dental crowns are fascinating, really. Not too painful, but it turns your mouth into a lego set. The mouth is like a small workshop in your face. There's nothing it can't do, or become! Hear our electric tooth tribute in this week's introduction. Contrasting the discomfort and humor of the dentist, audio this week is a montage of some of the best parent protests against forcing masks on their children. Hand a microphone to a pissed off parent and there's no end to the surprises! You find that in the raw audio section of this week's episode. We also visit a coin fountain and travel back in time. But there's no time travel for teeth! Don't miss your cleanings. In between, be sure to floss! Postscript: In memory of video artist NANCY CAIN This week's show is in tribute to Nancy Cain, who passed away on Sunday August 22. Nancy is well known to video art activists for her work in Videofreex. SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTRONICS #20: A Tribute to Anne Sexton Greetings, all. This is the final set of SWWE for a few weeks. This has been a crazy experience to put together an hour-long show every week for around twenty episodes, and I need a little time off to regroup, record some new music, and write out a few other pieces. This final episode catches me up, personally, with posting a bunch of work, too. Much of this show originated as a proposed album series on writers I love. It became a weekly show, partly out of Covid changing my focus and time. But there have been a number of writers I love included here from those earliest recordings: from David Berman, Henry Miller, Kathy Acker, e.e. cummings, Paul Krassner, and even performers like Mel Blanc or Belle Barth. The final piece from those original set of music are two tracks I'm posting today. It's a tribute to Anne Sexton, and I suppose a subheading could be "Romancing our worst intentions". — I think about Anne Sexton a lot. I think about her from her work, which has an indelible effect on anyone who ever reads it, to the final beautiful book title, "The Awful Rowing Toward God", and to her poised and amazing speaking voice. Few poets speak their work as well as Anne Sexton, which I think you'll hear in the two tribute pieces in the playlist. I think about taking care of ourselves this challenging year, too. If you have people that matter in your life, tell them. And if you're feeling worried about your own health or happiness, mention it to others, anonymously or directly, too. The talking cure is real, either clinically or with a friend. Be well, and, to quote Sexton, "Live Now". Life is an amazing experience, both dark and bright moments included. Ever since the shockingly gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders of August 1969, The Manson Family have cast a long shadow over not only the 60s counterculture and its images of free loving, acid-dropping, Establishment challenging, hippie flower children but also American culture as a whole. Rather than ushering in the fabled Age of Aquarius where peace and love would reign supreme, it appeared that the promise of "The Psychedelic Sixties" had ended with an unimaginably wanton act of violence and bloodshed. The clarion call of Dr. Timothy Leary and the Woodstock Generation to "Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Out" seemed to take on a much more sinister meaning as Charles Manson and those who lived by his side in the desert mountains of California became popular culture's de facto avatar for evil in the latter 20th century. Coupled with the January election of President Richard Nixon, who successfully campaigned under on "Law and Order" platform that promised reaffirm the Establishment status quo, the saga of the Manson Family spelled the grim end of an era and its dashed hopes for the so-called Age of Aquarius. Perhaps that is why, a half century later, the faint echoes of the Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders reverberate within popular culture. Through the decades there's been endless documentaries, movies, TV shows, books, and more either inspired by, based on, or seeking to make sense of it all. There's even been alternative theories proposed to challenge prosecutor's Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter telling of the whole twisted affair. Some, such as the controversial Nikolas Schreck, have argued that the Tate-LaBianca murders were a drug burn gone awry. Others, most notably the late conspiracy-minded radio host Mae Brussell, have speculated that the murders were a plot to crush the counterculture and that the Manson Family were products of the CIA's Cold War-era mind control experiments with the now infamous MK ULTRA project. Ed Sanders, the poet and counterculture icon of the seminal hippie folk-rock band The Fugs, attempted to draw a connection between Manson and a little-know cult with the ominous name The Process Church of the Final Judgment in his 1971 chronicle of the case THE FAMILY. And, of course, there are those who believe that Bugliosi's account of the events, as detailed in his 1974 best-seller HELTER SKELTER, remains the definitive final word on the whole matter. After all these years one could be forgiven for thinking that Charles Manson's death on November 19, 2017 from a cardiac arrest would be the nail in the coffin for his and The Manson Family's hold on the popular imagination. And yet multiple major motion pictures since have been based on, inspired/influenced by, or involved the Manson saga including the Hillary Duff-starring THE HAUNTING OF SHARON TATE, heavy-metal-rocker-turned-horror-filmmaker Rob Zombie's gory 3 FROM HELL, American Psycho director Mary Harron's CHARLIE SAYS, and, of course, Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Additionally, new books continued to be published on the subject including CREEPY CRAWL: CHARLES MANSON AND THE MANY LIVES OF AMERICA'S MOST INFAMOUS FAMILY by Jeffrey Melnick, which offered a cultural study of the Manson Family and its influence on the American psyche to this very day, and CHAOS: CHARLES MANSON, THE CIA, AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE SIXTIES by journalist Tom O'Neill. The latter book challenged Vincent Bugliosi's generally accepted HELTER SKELTER by delving into alternative theories related to the Family as well as the murders and became something of a sleeper hit covered by outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian upon its publication in the summer of 2019. What is it the continues to fascinate so many about The Manson Family? Why the continued popularity of alternative theories to explain the murders? What, if anything, does the Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders mean in the context of the peace and love counterculture of the 1960s? Filmmaker Lonnie Martin attempts to address these questions without finding the elusive answers in his fascinating and engrossing new movie THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS. Based on the essay "My Acid Trip with Squeaky Fromme" by late counterculture legend and self-described "investigative satirist" Paul Krassner, THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS follows Krassner's (played here by Elliot Kashner) attempt to investigate and unravel The Manson Family saga after being spurred on by the conspiracy-minded California radio fixture Mae Brussell (Robin Reck). Despite his admitted skepticism toward Brussell's theories, Krassner find himself drawn into chasing the phantoms of the Manson story and, in an effort to find them, decides to spend an acid-tripping day with the three remaining members of Charlie's Family that aren't confined to a cold cell: Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme (Jen Bevan), Sandra Good (Cindy Marie Martin), and Brenda McCann (Sarah Taurchini). Alternately scared and attracted to the trio, Krassner ends up not only chasing phantoms but also getting to know THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS and confronting his own demons in the acid-drenched process. Elliot Kashner as Paul Krassner hanging out with THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS (Cindy Marie Martin, Jen Bevan, and Sarah Taurchini) Cindy Marie Martin as Sandra Good in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS Jen Bevan as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS The director of THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS, filmmaker Lonnie Martin, joins us to discuss the movie, its character-driven nature, the role of gender in the movie, how the male gaze plays into the story, how it started out as a Master's thesis, his correspondence with Paul Krassner, what interested him about "Squeaky" Fromme as a primary subjective for a narrative film, working with the actors and actresses on who starred in it, the film's major themes, the Sixties counterculture, and much, much more. The History of Computing

Welcome to the History of Computing Podcast, where we explore the history of information technology. Because understanding the past prepares us for the innovations of the future! Today we're going to look at the impact Stewart Brand had on computing. Brand was one of the greatest muses of the interactive computing and then the internet revolutions. This isn't to take anything away from his capacity to create, but the inspiration he provided gave him far more reach than nearly anyone in computing. There's a decent chance you might not know who he his. There's even a chance that you've never heard of any of his creations. But you live and breath some of his ideas on a daily basis. So who was this guy and what did he do? Well, Stewart Brand was born in 1938, in Rockford, Illinois. He would go on to study biology at Stanford, enter the military and then study design and photography at other schools in the San Francisco area. This was a special time in San Francisco. Revolution was in the air. And one of the earliest scientific studies had him legitimately dosing on LSD. One of my all-time favorite books was The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, by Tom Wolfe. In the book, Wolfe follows Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters along a journey of LSD and Benzedrine riddled hippy goodness, riding a converted school bus across the country and delivering a new kind of culture straight out of Haight-Ashbury and to the heart of middle America. All while steering clear of the shoes FBI agents of the day wore. Here he would have met members of the Grateful Dead, Neal Cassady, members of the Hells Angels, Wavy Gravy, Paul Krassner, and maybe even Kerouac and Ginsberg. This was a transition from the Beat Generation to the Hippies of the 60s. Then he started the Whole Earth Catalog. Here, he showed the first satallite imagery of the planet Earth, which he'd begun campaigning NASA to release two years earlier. In the 5 years he made the magazine, he spread ideals like ecology, a do it yourself mentality, self-sufficiency, and what the next wave of progress would look like. People like Craig Newmark of Craig's List would see the magazine and it would help to form a new world view. In fact, the Whole Earth Catalog was a direct influence on Craig's List. Steve Jobs compared the Whole Earth Catalog to a 60s era Google. It inspired Wired Magazine. Earth Day would be created two years later. Brand would loan equipment and inspire spinoffs of dozens of magazines and books. And even an inspiration for many early websites. The catalog put him in touch with so, so many influential people. One of the first was Doug Engelbart and The Mother Of All Demos involves him in the invention of the mouse and the first video conferencing. In fact, Brand helped produce the Mother Of All Demos! As we moved into the 70s he chronicled the oncoming hacker culture, and the connection to the 60s-era counterculture. He inspired and worked with Larry Brilliant, Lee Felsenstein, and Ted Nelson. He basically invented being a “futurist” founding CoEvolution Quarterly and spreading the word of digital utopianism. The Whole Earth Software Review would come along with the advent of personal computers. The end of the 70s would also see him become a special advisor to former California governor Jerry Brown. In the 70s and 80s, he saw the Internet form and went on to found one of the earliest Internet communities, called The WELL, or Whole Earth Lectronic Link. Collaborations in the WELL gave us Barlow's The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a safe haunt for Kevin Mitnick while on the run, Grateful Dead tape trading, and many other Digerati. There would be other virtual communities and innovations to the concept like social networks, eventually giving us online forums, 4chan, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, and corporate virtual communities. But it started with The Well. He would go on to become a visiting scientist in the MIT Media Lab, organize conferences, found the Global Business Network with Peter Schwarts, Jay Ogilvy and other great thinkers to help with promoting values and various planning like scenario planning, a corporate strategy that involves thinking from the outside in. This is now a practice inside Deloitte. The decades proceeded on and Brand inspired whole new generations to leverage humor to push the buttons of authority. Much as the pranksters inspired him on the bus. But it wasn't just anti-authority. It was a new and innovative approach in an upcoming era of maximizing short-term profits at the expense of the future. Brand founded The Long Now Foundation with an outlook that looked 10,000 years in the future. They started a clock on Jeff Bezos' land in Texas, they started archiving languages approaching extinction, Brian Eno led seminars about long-term thinking, and inspired Anathem, a novel from one of my favorite authors, Neal Stephenson. Peter Norton, Pierre Omidyar, Bruce Sterling, Chris Anderson of the Economist and many others are also involved. But Brand inspired other counter-cultures as well. In the era of e-zines, he inspired Jesse Dresden, who Brand knew as Jefferson Airplane Spencer Drydens kid. The kid turned out to be dFx, who would found HoHo Con an inspiration for DefCon. Stewart Brand wrote 5 books in addition to the countless hours he spent editing books, magazines, web sites, and papers. Today, you'll find him pimping blockchain and cryptocurrency, in an attempt to continue decentralization and innovation. He inherited a playful counter-culture. He watched the rise and fall and has since both watched and inspired the innovative iterations of countless technologies, extending of course into bio-hacking. He's hobnobbed with the hippies, the minicomputer timeshares, the PC hackers, the founders of the internet, the tycoons of the web, and then helped set strategy for industry, NGOs, and governments. He left something with each. Urania was the muse of astronomy, some of the top science in ancient Greece. And he would probably giggle if anyone compared him to the muse. Both on the bus in the 60s, and in his 80s today. He's one of the greats and we're lucky he graced us with his presence on this rock - that he helped us see from above for the first time. Just as I'm lucky you elected to listen to this episode. So next time you're arguing about silly little things at work, think about what really matters and listen to one of his Ted Talks. Context. 10,000 years. Have a great week and thanks for listening to this episode of the History of Computing Podcast.

Chuck Ochelli, host and producer of the Ochelli Effect radio program/network, is an eclectic figure within the world of online media. He has a keen interest in the JFK assassination, got through a rough and tumble early life that brought him into contact with organized crime and outlaw bikers gangs, and was heavily involved in the East Coast punk and metal scenes. Both articulate and street-wise, Chuck Ochelli has managed to do a great deal in his lifetime. And, inspirationally, he's done it while overcoming the limitations of being legally blind. I've appeared on two Ochelli Effect network shows, The Age of Transitions and Porkins Policy Review (both of which the workman Ochelli produces in addition to his own show!), and thought it was high time to have Chuck on Parallax Views. We discuss a number of topics starting with a little background on Chuck's life, specifically his wild childhood years onto his experiences amongst the criminal underworld and the outlaw biker gang known as The Pagans. From there we delve into his affinity for the Black Panthers and shows he's done covering the little known Civil Rights figure T.RM. Howard.Chuck's also gives a firsthand perspective on the rise of Trumpism through his experiences, as an online talk radio host, with the eerie proto-Trumpist militia and Patriot movement. He's got some thoughts on these so-called "Patriots" and their ties to the white nationalist movement. Additionally, Chuck tells listeners about the crackpot conspiracy shock jock and generally distrainable figure James Fetzer. During this portion of the conversation Chuck goes no-holds-barred on many elements in the so-called "alternative" media. We start wrapping up the conversation by discussing a very fun story from Chuck's days in the East Coast punk/metal scenes. Specifically, Chuck tells the tale of how he was offered the role of lead vocalist for the infamous Murder Junkies after the passing of the infamous G.G. Allin! Questioning Authority... Now And... Then On this edition of Parallax Views, the them is questioning authority with two guests who highlight resistance in both the present and our historical past. First up, investigative reporter Arun Gupta, founding editor of The Indypendent, joins us to talk about his work organizing the No More Concentration Camps movement. Firecracker congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caused a stir recently by referring to ICE detention centers for migrants and refuges as concentration camps. Some pundits have decried AOC's statements as a bridge to far and argue the concentration camp characterization is irresponsible. Arun Gupta, however, agrees with AOC's take and joins us to explain why in this pertinent conversation. Paul KrassnerApril 19, 1932 - July 21, 2019 Next up, Joseph E. Green, a contributing writer at Garrison: The Journal of History and Deep Politics, joins us to celebrate the life and times of investigative satirist, Yippie activist, and all-around counterculture icon Paul Krassner. A consummate rebel and subversive humorist who proved a thorn in the side of the establishment thanks in part to his groundbreaking underground press 'zine The Realist, Paul Krassner passed away at the age of 87 in late July of this year. Alongside Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, Krassner helped found the Youth International Party, or Yippies, who pranked on right-wing authoritarians throughout the turbulent times of the Vietnam war. Green, who currently publishes his own underground zines through Microcosm Publishing, was heavily influenced by Krassner's work and helps us celebrate the legacy he left behind. Be sure to check out two book reviews that Green mentioned on this episode here and here.

Are Trump’s recent racist tweets part of a political strategy, or an uncontrollable personal impulse?  Harold Meyerson comments – and also proposes ways to end the potentially devastating divide among Democrats over a Green New Deal.  Harold is editor-at-large of The American Prospect. Also: Was Al Franken railroaded, when he was forced to resign from the Senate in the face of #MeToo complaints about unwanted sexual touching and kissing?  Jane Mayer wrote a long report on the case for The New Yorker and concluded “Yes, he was railroaded,” but our national political correspondent Jeet Heer disagrees. And we’re still thinking about Paul Krassner, the sixties anarchist activist and editor of “The Realist” – he died July 21st – we re-play an interview where he talks about how he got Norman Mailer to come out against masturbation.

This week's Tell Your Friends! History's Greatest Podcast! is a corker, as this week's guest, writer/showrunner/show creator/comedy force of nature SHADI PETOSKY starts busting Liam's ball immediately. Shadi has created some great TV for kids and adults, from segments for Yo Gabba Gabba! to her own beloved show, Danger & Eggs. Shadi sat with Liam at the great Hollywood coffee shop Sabor y Cultura and talked about her career, why her very successful TV show had to go away, about why she left standup comedy after a group of her friends were forced to fight with a Midwestern hack over her honor, and why she doesn't want to consider herself a transgender role model. We also get into her time as podcast network owner during the most difficult time of her life, living in a house where she would see famous people coming in and out all the time, and a touching encounter with the late Brody Stevens. Also, Liam outs himself as a total bougie fancy lad. PLUS, in a mighty intro, Liam talks about the Gilroy Garlic festival shooting, weird hotel toilets, and how Paul Krassner helped inspire him to create an alternative high school newspaper that somehow failed to get him into trouble. A founding member of the Yippies, he turned on to LSD with Dr. Timothy Leary, rode the bus with Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, and took Groucho Marx on his first acid trip. Liam was fortunate to talk to Krassner a few years ago, via phone, as he plugged his latest book, Patty Hearst & The Twinkie Murders, and we play their conversation here unedited. It was recorded at ShowBriz Studios in Manhattan by Alex Brizell. Earlier this month the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards were announced at the Comic-Con International website, and as Andy and Derek like to do every year, they're devoting a full episode of The Comics Alternative to a discussion of the nominations. On this week's show, the Two Guys give their impressions of the various nominees, both as a whole and on a category-by-category basis, making observations and trying to understand any trends underlying this year's selections. However, Derek and Andy resist the urge to play armchair quarterbacks, so they don't second-guess the six-member panel of judges or focus on what they would have chosen if they had been on the selection committee. As diligent comics scholars, they judicial and discerning in their commentary. At the same time, they don't shy away from pointing out a few inconsistencies and a few head-scratchers when trying to make sense of this year's nominations. You can find a complete list of the 2017 Eisner Award nominees below. Discussing cannabis and satire as Vivian McPeak is joined by legendary American satirist and marijuana advocate Paul Krassner. Krassner was a child violin prodigy and was the youngest person ever to play Carnegie Hall, in 1939 at age six. Krassner is firmly secular, considering religion "organised superstition," though his parents were Jewish. Paul majored in journalism at Baruch College, the transitioned into performing as a comedian known as Paul Maul. Paul was active in politically edged humor and satire in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was a founder of the Youth International Pary (Yippies) in 1967 and a member of Ken Kessy's Merry Pranksters for prankster activism. In 1963, he created what Kurt Vonnegut described as "a miracle of compressed intelligence nearly as admirable for potent simplicity, in my opinion, as Einstein's e=mc2." Vonnegut said "With the Vietnam War going on, and with its critics discounted and scorned by the government and the mass media, Krassner put on sale a red, white and blue poster that said FUCK COMMUNISM. At the beginning of the 1960s, FUCK was believed to be so full of bad magic as to be unprintable... By having FUCK and COMMUNISM fight it out in a single sentence, Krassner wasn't merely being funny as heck. He was demonstrating how preposterous it was for so many people to be responding to both words with such cockamamie Pavlovian fear and alarm."

Paul Krassner is was one of the central figures of the counter-culture of the late nineteen sixties. He was one of the founders of the Yippies . He was a member of the Merry Pranksters. He first took LSD in 1965 at Millbrook when Tim Leary and Richard Alpert (now known,of course as Ram Dass) lived there. He was the Editor of Lenny Bruce’s autobiography ,”How To Talk Dirty And Influence People,” Most notably he was the Editor and The Realist an indispensable magazine for hippies and those who try to understand us. He was a contemporary and friend of Allen Ginsberg, Wavy Gravy, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs ,and Abbie Hoffman among others. In the decades since, Paul has written a couple of dozen books, recorded six albums (for labels I ran) and remained an important satirist and social commentator. At various times he has referred to his spiritual beliefs as a “radical atheist,” , “zen bastard,” and “free thinker.” Referring to his first LSD trip he says . “I realized I had to play with the mystery. Absurdity became my religion”. Yet when I turned off the microphone after this podcast and said goodbye and “God bless you Paul,” he instantly replied  “God bless you too. Fooled you didn't I? Paul quotes Mark Twain as saying that there is no laughter in heaven. For the record, I disagree with both of them. In fact when Paul laughs and makes others do so---that itself is a neighborhood in heaven.

This show ended up even more chaotic than I, Stang, expected, and I expected chaos. For the first time ever, I let somebody besides Lonesome Cowboy Dave phone in and participate: Priestess Pisces. This was also the first time we've had live guests in the studio besides Dr. Hal, Dr. Sinister or Paul Krassner, if my memory serves me -- much less TWO Space Princesses. After the requisite 15 minutes of songs/collages/mini-sermons (Rev. Frodis "Suds" Pshaw, Little Jack Melody, The Puzzling Evidence Show, The Duke of Uke and The Rudy Schwartz Project), it's all talk. Subjects include: the Buzz of Dave; scrapple; the new Google+ and Twitter sites by which I am gradually being replaced by tough women who use me as their plaything; The Rudy Schwartz Project videos; horrible recent news-making events and even worse puns derived thereof; controlled nose hair growth; pepper spray as a sex aid; "Bob's" DePends; some talk of Thatan's problems at Starwood and 14X-Day Drill; and Lonesome Cowboy Dave's habit of saying "I'm sorry" a lot. It ends with a special recent cut by DEVO. TO DONATE: http://subgenius.com/ts/hos.html SubGenius Foundation Google+ page Ivan Stang Twitter Page

Guest speakers: Ram Dass, Timothy Leary, Paul Krassner, and Tom Van Sant Ram Dass & Lorenzocirca: 2001 PROGRAM NOTES: "LSD produces religions experiences, but it's less evident that it can produce a religious life." -Houston Smith [NOTE: The following quotations are by Timothy Leary.] "The origins of most great religions go back to groups of people who made this discovery that you don't look for god, you don't look for power in the Caesars or in the temples or in the churches and all that. You look within." "The fun has hardly begun." [NOTE: The following quotations are by Ram Dass.] "But inside myself, as you all understand, that what you see [during a psychedelic experience] to turn it into what you be is a really subtle and sensitive trip." "And that's part of the integrity of this experience, of growing into seeing the relative nature of reality and the paper mache quality of social institutions and the way in which personalities turn into style rather than substance." "And it's interesting that it's taken many years to grow into the kinds of visions that [Leary] was having in those days and to appreciate how much what happened to me through psychedelics transformed my consciousness in such a way that death meant something different to me that allowed me to be in the presence of somebody that was dying in a way that honored the drama of the process without getting lost in it." "What I have experienced in the past twenty five years, if I were to look at what the essence of the matter is, is that having touched the unconditioned and having seen the relative nature of reality and the way the mind creates the dream, that has given me a faith in the possibility of who we are." "And it feels to me that as long as I live I will still be growing into what happened to me on the first psychedelic experience." "And allow my heart to be open, like keeping your heart open in hell, keeping your heart open in the presence of suffering, because even at the moment when the suffering is most intense, right behind it inside you is an incredible equanimity, because one of the things that I touched through acid was an extreme appreciation of the perfection of the laws of form, the perfection of the unfolding of the law." "But I can feel, when I look at what our spiritual journeys are on this plain, it feels so obvious to me, that the stuff we are handed is the grist for the mill of awakening out of the illusion until we can be in the form without being entrapped by it so that we can play lightly. We can dance sweetly. We can have joy in the presence of the hell-realms and do what we can do to relieve the suffering without getting burned out and lost and bitter and cynical and frustrated. And we have the tolerance to deal with chaos and uncertainty." "What has happened is that the Sixties unleashed something extraordinarily powerful that is still reverberating and echoing in this culture, and actually in the world. And what that released was a recognition in people that they were free to change, institutions and themselves." Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option
