Obama once said if Republicans bring a knife to the fight Democrats should bring a gun. Eric Holder once said when they go low, we kick them. Maxine Waters once said to absolutely harass Trump supporters in supermarkets and restaurants and gas stations. The Democrat Party is in essence a gang of thugs. There’s no such thing as live and let live or agree to disagree. The Democrats want to destroy all dissenting opinions. When Ben & Jerry’s went woke conservatives stopped buying Cherry Garcia. When the spice company Penzey’s told Trump supporters they were not welcome, we just bought our paprika someplace else. And when Bud Light hired an ugly dude in a dress to promote its beer, conservatives found another way to quench their thirst. But when Democrats got triggered by Elon Musk, they firebombed his Tesla dealerships, burned down charging stations and doxed Tesla owners. We develop recipes for a living: over three dozen cookbooks, countless magazine and internet articles, and 20,000+ copywritten and published recipes. Here's a look inside what we do on an almost daily basis.Let's face it: Most recipes are developed in an existing frame--a braise, a cake, a short crust, a roast, a pastry cream. You accept the frame, then begin to work inside it to create something new.In this episode, we're going to take on the hypothetical of developing a trifle, a layered cake-and-custard dessert. We've also got a one-minute cooking tip. And we'll tell you what's making us happy in food this week. Here are the segments for this episode of COOKING WITH BRUCE & MARK:[01:04] Our one-minute cooking tip: buy great butter for toast but supermarket butter for baking.[03:21] How we develop a recipe. We're making up our own trifle, showing you the thought process and creativity it takes to create a new recipe.[23:45] What's making us happy in food this week? Ben & Jerry's dairy-free Cherry Garcia and a kale salad with a nutritional yeast vinaigrette.

In this week's podcast, I interview Briana and Nil in the second part of our series, and show how petty I Am. We delve into the rivalry between the Chainsaws of Scarezone 1, who are celebrated and honored on the "murder wall of fame" with cool action figures, and the hardworking but underappreciated chainsaws of Terror Tram get nothing. I put Briana on trial for sparking a war not just between the chainsaws but also among other scare actors of Horror Nights, highlighting the escalating tensions. Concluding the episode, I declare my intention to hunt down Briana and Nil at Horror Nights for a dramatic confrontation, until i get my Titanic drawn moment. This playful yet intense declaration of war and ongoing rivalry between me and Briana and the other scareactors will only make me work harder to develope my character in HHN until I'm imortalized so hopefully I can finally retire. The episode captures the humor and competitiveness of the scare actor community, with a focus on the emerging conflicts and the personal stakes involved.
We concluded the World Devon Congress adventure with the State that put these cattle on the map – okay, they're on the flag, anyway. We had a wonderful tour through the Green Mountain State of Vermont, on our way to meet up with Anson Tebbets, Secretary of Agriculture, Food and Markets. This lovely man took a walk down the lane on his family farm to talk about the finer things in agricultural life that are represented in Vermont – maple syrup, socks, adult beverages and ice cream, just to name a few. He believes in those who produce our food and fiber products, and works to support them with legislation, funding and promotion, and, of course, his valuable time.Vermont is a quietly beautiful agricultural state that is definitely worth a visit – even if you don't have time to hit the Ben & Jerry's Factory Tour (though we strongly recommend it). Connor and Josh learn about Cherry Garcia, and other various ice cream takes!
We finally gave our take on the Pokimane cookie controversy and Tsimfuckis and how there is a little piece of Jerry Garcia's beard in every pint of Cherry Garcia
“Our stupidity may be clearly proved by the fact that we hold that “buying” refers only to the objects for which we pay cash, and we regard as free gifts the things for which we spend our very selves. We are eager to attain them at the cost of anxiety, danger, lost honor, personal freedom, and time; so true it is that each man regards nothing as cheaper than himself.” -SenecaAlonzo Fields was President Harry Truman's butler, and he said, speaking of the President, “he never seemed to have a problem, and no one could tell when something was troubling him.”The issues that landed on President Truman's desk were not easy ones. The easy problems get handled before they hit a leader's desk. His choices were usually between awful and cataclysmic. That's not conjecture. It's a fact. After all, he was the one who decided to drop the first atomic weapon on mainland Japan instead of invading - two impossible choices. Truman was not the pure example of equanimity that Mr. Fields described. There were documented moments of losing his temper and being unhappy, but those were few and didn't last long. I'm fortunate to be close to several humans who move quickly through dark places and back into the light. I work with some, and I live with some. I have deep respect for those abilities. It's inspiring. We talk about happiness a lot. Do what makes you happy? Does that make you happy? I'm happy. I'm not happy. I'm happy if you are happy. Are you happy? Here's the problem with happiness: we can manufacture happiness pretty quickly. A bowl of Cherry Garcia. That's happiness. The sweet chocolate bouncing against the subtle tartness of the cherries. All of this is wrapped by the silky vanilla wonderfulness that I imagine originated in Madagascar under the watchful eye of a troop of ring-tailed lemurs. Put me outside eating said bowl of said ice cream with a warm breeze, preferably tropical, and good golly. I'm happy. That happiness lasts about as long as the sugar runs through my system. Then it's back to whatever state I occupied before. Stop trying to be happy. Work on being satisfied. You might be unsatisfied with where you live. Maybe it's where you work, how you look, who you love, or who doesn't love you. It might be how you spend your time or what you don't get to do. I don't get to wander enough back allies of places with people who don't look like me, talk like me, or think like me, taking photos and learning about other cultures as much as I'd like. That would make me happy, but I'm not sure it would give me what I want. I'd want more. And more. I'll never be satisfied until I control my need for more. After all, what I wanted ten years ago is what I have now. And, unsurprisingly, it's not enough. I refuse to believe that we can't get our insatiable appetite for more under control. Yes, it's ironic that the person who talks every day about being better today than yesterday is encouraging us to be satisfied. BTTY is about being better, whatever that means to you. For me, that is, in part, the quest to enjoy the way the world is now. Not the way I think it could have been or constantly focusing on the way I want to be. Doing both of those means, I miss what is here and now. Most of our perceived problems will work themselves out, one way or another. If you can do something about it, do it. If you can't, well, what will worrying do? While I'm very happy eating Cherry Garcia, that's not what I'm after. I'm after satisfaction. And that is work I need to do on the inside. Satisfaction won't come with a beautiful mountainside home in the desert or a bungalow on the beach. That will make me happy for a moment or two. Erich Fromm said it wisely, "To have or to be? That is the question. The difference between having and being is the difference between a society that is geared to have more and a society that is geared to be more."Satisfaction comes when I can focus my monkey mind on doing things that have meaning for myself and those around me. Being more, not having more. It means slowing down enough to see all that is good here and now and realizing what matters —relationships, meaningful work, and living our life to potential. Our satisfaction is a factor of what we desire. The more we want, the more we need to be satisfied. The less we want, the less we need. That is inside work and something you can change today. Want more from yourself, don't want more things. Want to be more. Not have more. Everything has a cost, and we don't always pay in cash. We pay with our very selves. The cost is freedom, anxiety, relationships, time, and more. Something to consider over the next bowl of your favorite flavor is what work you can do on the inside that will change how you see the outside. Take care, friend. You aren't alone.

Don't forget to tune in until the end for The Last Bite, when we reveal next episode's ice cream so your family can taste along at home.
Take a look in any supermarket ice cream freezer section and you may see a mystery. There are big containers of the typical ice cream brands: Breyers, Turkey Hill, and Edy's. And there are specialty brands that make gelato, low-fat and vegan ice creams. And then there are the fancy pints: which is mostly Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs.Häagen-Dazs has flavors like vanilla, chocolate, pistachio—the sort of flavors that run smooth. And then Ben & Jerry's specializes in chunky flavors: Cherry Garcia, The Tonight Dough, Chunky Monkey, etc. The two hardly ever cross into the other's turf. Why?It's possible they are experiencing something common to natural competition—they are specializing in what works best for them. But, as Christopher Sullivan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison suspects, the two companies may be engaging in what is known as "tacit collusion," where two parties silently agree to... stick to their own territory. We try to get to the creamy core of what makes up a conspiracy, and how the consumer eventually loses out in this cold, cold war.Today's episode was produced by Willa Rubin and Alyssa Jeong Perry. Ben & Jerry's is an American ice cream manufacturer and marketing expert Alma Derricks' favourite brand. It all goes back to the summer she was sixteen. Have you ever wondered why you sometimes react to situations the way that you do? Do you tend to lash out at those you love? Do you self-censor and try not to upset the apple cart? Do you bury yourself in work? Do you scrolling for hours on facebook and instagram? Or do you drown your feelings in a gallon of Cherry Garcia ice cream while watching re-runs of Grace and Frankie for an entire weekend? One of the things that we want to recognize, is that we all have circumstances or relationships in our life that cause us to be triggered. Triggers cause us to move out of this state of that warm, present cozy, state of connection to ourselves and push us into our safety patterns such as fight, flight and freeze. When we are triggered, we are in our survival brain-literally trying to survive whatever is happening outside of ourselves that we deem as potentially dangerous. Our rational thinking brain is turned 'off line' making it really challenging for us to respond in a way that is connecting and healthy. Often, we respond by shutting down, walking on egg shells, criticizing, demanding, or simply avoiding. Triggers can actually be a beautiful thing-because they show us where some of our deepest work lies. They can be a pretty awesome invitation to go inward and heal old wounds, untrue thoughts and unmet needs. The triggers you experience hold so much incredible feedback. They're really your key to understanding your healing. In this episode I talk about understanding your triggers and your glimmers-those things that bring you back home to yourself. I share with you plenty of ideas to get you started creating your own glimmer list, but I invite you to create your own so that you can learn exactly what glimmers or resources help you regulate your nervous system and come back home to you. Before listening consider: Do you snap easily at people? Do you find yourself sometimes questioning why you behave or react in the way that you do? Are you craving healthier more intimate connection with others? Do you often run from one activity to the next? Do you sometimes isolate for days or weeks? Do you sometimes feel resentful in your relationships? These can all be signs of triggers. And while triggers are not fun-I can honestly say that they are a gift. "Glimmers help you come back home to yourself. They create a sense of safety and connection to yourself."~Krista Resnick "When we don't know how to move through conflict, and be in the discomfort of our dysregulation. It's almost impossible to have rich relationship." ~Krista Resnick "There's a lot of important information in our triggers, I want you to start thinking about triggers being your new invitation to go inward."~ Krista Resnick "The triggers you experience hold so much feedback. They're really your key to understanding your healing."~Krista Resnick LINKS FROM EPISODE FAWN to FIERCE Krista Resnick

Episode Notes [“Don't Tell Me Your Major Theme” By Malena Ramnath] Malena: Hey guys, my name is Malena Ramnath. Allison: I'm Allison Rhee. Malena: And we are your hosts and juniors here at Northwestern. This is Don't Tell Me Your Major, an interview podcast where we avoid getting to know people on the surface level with questions like what their major is, where they're from, and how old they are, but try to get to know them on a more profound level. That's how you really know the kind of person someone is rather than judging them based on pre-established stereotypes. So, last time listeners, two years ago, – if you can believe it – we had our last podcast about Valentine's Day. We asked “What did you do for Valentine's Day?,” “Do you believe in soulmates?,” “What's your favorite romantic movie, love song, and flower?,” and “Is love at first sight real?” But now Allison and I are in very different places in our lives, cuffed now to two different men than we were with two years ago, in long term relationships, and I'd just say things have changed. And so I really wanted to revisit Valentine's Day, and kind of how our perspectives on it have changed and kind of how our view of love has changed based on our new experiences now. So to start off, how did you spend your Valentine's Day this year? Allison: Um, well, Valentine's Day is only like a week or so after my one year anniversary. So we went out for that. And then Valentine's Day was on a Monday this year. And the Superbowl was on Sunday, so we decided to just go a little more low-key. So we just ordered a party platter of sushi and then we had chocolate covered strawberries and watched The Haunting of Hill House. So it was… it was really casual. Malena: I can't stand horror movies, so I don't know why that's cute. But no, I get it. It's like “Oh, I'm scared” and then you get cuddles. I hate horror movies. They give me horrible nightmares. But I do appreciate a casual Valentine's Day because I will say once you've been with someone for a while, like you just start to appreciate that stuff more, I think. Allison: Yeah. Malena: Yeah, Valentine's Day for me, I am posh and I'll take any occasion to have him spend money on me. And so we decided to go to Etta which is a restaurant in River North I've been dying to go to. However, on Valentine's Day I get a call saying that my boyfriend tested positive for COVID. I tested positive two days afterwards. So we've been in quarantine for two whole weeks. Just got out, recording this podcast and we're going to the dinner tomorrow. Allison: Oh, that's nice. Malena: Yeah. Instead, he sent me, to the hotel room I was quarantining in, he had sparkling juice and chocolate covered strawberries and like my favorite ice cream delivered to me and some roses, which I thought was really cute. Allison: Sparkling juice? Malena: Yeah, sparkling. Yeah. I mean, I'm under 21. He's not but he had that delivered to me. And so what, you know, based on – I had chocolate, we both had chocolate covered strawberries –but what do you think is the best Valentine's Day food to get or receive? Like edible arrangements, chocolates? Chicken wings? Allison: Chicken wings? I would – probably not. I mean, I like chicken wings. I just I don't know if I would want them for Valentine's Day. I'm not a big like, pure chocolate person. Like I don't eat like chocolate bars. I think chocolate covered strawberries are always the best bet, but when you buy them they're so expensive for no reason. Some rustic homemade chocolate covered strawberries, I think that'd be, that's the perfect gift. Malena: I did appreciate my favorite ice cream. It's Cherry Garcia, Ben and Jerry's, listeners – in case you ever want to hit me up with some gifts for your loyal host. But I also like edible arrangements. Because it's like you get the vibes of like having a nice set of flowers, but it's edible. So it's like practical, they don't just like sit on your shelf and die like flowers, you know? And they do come with chocolate covered strawberries and like pineapples and things like that. So… Allison: I can make you that for like probably half the price. Malena: If you wanted to. It's the price of your time, Allison. Allison: That's true. Malena: That's what the issue is. Okay, on a more serious note, though. How do you think love - so you've been in a relationship with Noah. Hi, Noah! Sorry, I'm trying to be best friends with him. But you've been in a relationship for a little over a year now. I have my two year mark on Friday. How do you think love changes over the course of a one or two year relationship? Allison: I definitely think in the beginning of a relationship, it's more like butterflies and I'm so shy. I'm so nervous around you and like trying to always look your best or like, act your best. But I think that that might be sustainable in like shorter relationships. Once you reach like a point where you've been together for over a year or two years, you can't hide those things about yourself. You know, like they have to see you as you are. That's why I feel like – I've read this like, I listen to this podcast or some Tiktok about how around this six month mark or one year mark that's when a lot of couples break up because like you can't avoid who you are at that point. So if you're like, if you don't like the person that your partner is, you know, you'll realize that around then. So I think love changes, and you become a lot more comfortable and like real with the other person the longer that you're in a relationship. Malena: Yeah, I'm kind of hitting that point, too. This is my first like, really, really long relationship. And the first time I've got to a point where it's like, it's just your best friend at a certain point. It's like, I mean, obviously, there still is like, some romantic, I'm attracted to you element there. But really, it's just like your best friend. Like, I just want to come home and gossip in bed next to you. I don't want to do anything else after. So that's definitely an element. But then I think it's also like, it's interesting how you can almost get too comfortable. Like, sometimes you gotta, you gotta remember to mix it up a little bit. And stuff like that, which is weird. Like, I'm 20. I didn't think I would need to, like, add spice to anything. But it is funny how you get into your routines and stuff. Even at such a young age. But then the follow up to that is, do you think it's the same with a friendship? Like, because when you're first – I felt like when I was first thinking about this – when you're first friends with someone, you're like, worried about hurting their feelings, like tiptoeing around them, but then you get so comfortable, you can kind of just say and do whatever. Allison: Yeah, like kind of, I guess. I think relationships in general, just like friendships and romantic relationships mirror each other a lot. I think one thing is like, you have a lot more like – how do I say this – you're probably aren't as invested in the little small things about your friendship as you are in a relationship. You know what I mean, so like, if I had a friend and we were friends for a really long time, and like, at a certain point, I realized like, “Oh, we're not that compatible,” it's not like the end of the world. You know, you can still be friends with someone like that and still probably maintain a close enough friendship. But with a romantic relationship, once you reach a point where you're like, “Oh, I don't think we're that compatible.” It's like, you kind of have to end it. Or it's not as casual. Malena: Yeah, you can't like grow out of it. It's kind of like it has to be a sudden rupture. Yeah, I can see how that's different. Um, okay. I'm definitely thinking about this more and more as I get to be with people for longer in college. Because I feel like… some of my guy friends, I spend a lot of time with them, too, and like, they have their quirks and I'm like, “Okay, I can forgive this now. But if I just met you, and you were doing this, I don't know.” You know what I mean? Allison: Oh, yeah, it's true. It's like, you're okay with it because you know them. Malena: Yeah. Allison: Yeah. Malena: Okay, but on a lighter note. On a lighter note to wrap it up. And so that the listeners out there, if you want to take your girls on a date, we would really appreciate it. Because, you know, a free evening on the town. Always, always appreciated. Allison: You can take Malena out. Malena: I mean… Allison! Okay, but anyway, so this is my last question. What would be your favorite date that you haven't been on yet? Allison: Um, I think I'd really like to travel somewhere. I guess it's more of a trip than a singular date. But I think traveling somewhere new would be nice, because I'd really love to go places. A little more low-key, a cooking class. Malena: Oh, a cooking class would be kind of cool. I feel like it would be… Allison: I do love cooking. Malena: It might be kind of cringy, though. Like, if there's like a weird crowd. You know? Allison: Oh what, like, old people? Malena: I don't know, you can't discriminate against old people. Maybe like, you know, for lack of a better word, like a Karen. You know, who's like, “How do I do this? How do I do this?” Allison: Oh, that's true. Malena: You know, over and over? Allison: Maybe an advanced cooking class. Malena: I mean, Allison is probably going to culinary school later. So… Allison: We'll see. Malena: Well, that's what she's been talking about for a while. So, you know, maybe it'll end up happening so she can take the advanced one. I'll be in beginners trying to make an omelet. I think my ideal date…Oh, I always really wanted to go to a Michelin star restaurant. If any of my listeners really loves my podcast and wants to donate to the Malena really wants to go to Alinea fund, please feel free to do that. I know. But anyways, thank you, Allison. Allison: Thank you. Malena: We're so glad to have you back. She's been abroad, so we finally have her back as our third host. Hopefully, you'll be hearing from Hannah soon and once again, this has been a North by Northwestern podcast. Happy Valentine's Day everybody! Allison: Happy Valentine's Day! “If you start with, ‘This is the thing we want to change, we're happy to play our role and be part of a broader movement,' I truly believe that you can change the world, while making money.” Being kind has never been cooler — or more profitable — for businesses. This week, I learn from Chris Gale why he believes corporations really can be a tool for positive change — if leaders' hearts are truly in the right place. Gale is the Head of Social Impact for eBay UK, and was previously Head of Social Mission Strategy in Europe for Ben & Jerry's. (For the record, he's a Cherry Garcia or Chunky Monkey man.) eBay's global mission is guaranteeing economic opportunities for everyone in the world. In the UK, that manifests as free training schemes to help social purpose businesses find wider audiences, showcased in the eBay for Change marketplace. In our conversation, we discussed the pros and cons of businesses getting involved with social missions, mistakes to avoid, and how to balance the desire to do good with the drive for profit. In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, you'll also learn: Why Chris would love to move to rural India How moving from research to enterprise changed Chris' perspective on socially conscious business practices How Ben & Jerry's retained its social mission after the Unilever purchase How big business can help — and hinder — nonprofit causes The differences between a social enterprise, a nonprofit and a B Corp How eBay's UK office honed in on a mission it could manage Why the most success social enterprises start with a mission, not the market And so much more! This week I had the pleasure to speak with Stephen Pino Founder of Runfit, a local race management organization built out of a desire to curb childhood obesity by creating a community based approach to goal setting and racing for elementary students. As a non-profit organization, many of their runs directly benefit either students or other organizations, like the Barrett House. Stephen is a former elementary teacher and principal and you can hear his love of children and community in his voice. He saw a need that he felt was important to our community and created it and has grown it into something wonderful. He talks about getting into running, how he got into teaching, and his love of the sport. He also talks about the joys of watching runners of all abilities come out and do the best they can week in and week out. I hope you enjoy the episode and check out the upcoming races, such as the Cherry Garcia run, the NM Chips and Salsa Half Marathon, and the one I'm looking forward to the Tyrunnosaurus Run. The heat and humidity (for here) is rough. Be sure you're hydrating, checking the temps, and as always, keep running, New Mexico
An interview with Philippa Dowding, award-winning author of 13 books for middle-grade readers, including Oculum, Firefly, and Quinn and the Quiet, Quiet. She is also a poet, a musician, and a copywriter. Hear about her attraction to weird plot possibilities, her occasional tendency to spook herself while writing, and her encounter with a gargoyle in a curiosity shop that helped launched one of her book series. 20 minutes. All ages. Read the full transcript at CabinTales.ca Show Notes [0:00] Intro [1:15] Interview with Philippa Dowding CA: Do you ever do object studies or has an object ever featured in one of your books or sparked some ideas for you? PD: … The Lost Gargoyle series was inspired by …a funny little curio store with gargoyles on the steps…. I started a bedtime story that night with my kids about one of these gargoyles following us home… he had such a big personality, this gargoyle. He just came fully formed because of having seen them on these stairs. [2:30] CA: Cool Do you have any techniques that you use to increase the tension in the middle of a book? PD: …Try to build a cliffhanger. …. As you get closer to the end, you can shorten the chapters … And honestly you just have to write through it….One of the things that I do like to do when I work with kids in schools, we do “Wouldn't it be weird if…” a child says a line and then the next child says a line. And that sort of gives you the idea that there's no wrong way to write a story. … So you have to tell that internal critic that we're going to play this game now, “Wouldn't it be weird if…” and just be weird. … [3:50] CA: Do you have a favorite first line, either from your own worker from other works of fiction? PD: I guess my favorite first line of my own fiction is “This morning I woke up on the ceiling,” which was from the Gwendolyn Golden story. … CA: Have you ever opened with dialogue? PD: Yeah. Oculum starts out with the word “Mother.” … [4:35] CA: Do you tend to change your beginning after you've revised? PD: … I don't think I've ever really changed the beginning. … [4:55] CA: Do you have any advice to young writers on how to begin? PD: … The only way you can write it is to begin, and you can just tell yourself, “I can always rewrite this; this is just a draft” so that they can overcome that sort of fear of looking at a blank page. … The first idea that comes to you is fine. … [5:30] CA: And any advice on how to end a story? PD: Reading it out loud. There's a natural cadence to an ending. …You can feel there's a beat missing … It's the best way to find out how it's flowing. … [6:10] CA: Do you share your work with critique partners or family or friends? PD: I always do. … Basically people that you trust that are going to actually call you on it if something is not working. … It can be nerve wracking. Confidence is … something that we absolutely have to build. Because it's such a private job.... And you have to convince yourself that your private is … worthy of being public. [7:05] CA: Do you set aside certain times of day or certain parts of the year when you write fiction? PD: … You need that tipping point to make you write it at all because it's the thing that's has to be written next, and you also need the discipline to finish it, and then you need the staying power to revise, you need the skill to edit it -- it's a long process. …. I have a home office, I have the discipline of getting up and working. …. I write every day, and if I'm not working on … copywriting, I write probably four to five hours a day…. [8:25] CA: Do you have a favorite POV to write from? PD: So I've got 12 books out and a 13th coming and 9 of them are third person omniscient…. At first I found first person really hard. … But now I like it. … Gwendoline Golden is my first first-person story – and that's my fourth novel… -- and she told me how to write it. … it wasn't conscious. … [9:20] CA: Have you ever written multiple points of view? PD: Oculum is 2 voices. … One's a child that's living inside this perfect domed world, and there's another child living outside. And they speak quite differently, because he's living in a world that's quite degraded so his language is quite degraded. That was kind of an interesting challenge. … [10:00] CA: Have you ever written an unreliable narrator? …. I feel sort of an alliance with younger readers, that we kind of have to be reliable at least in the way that we're telling the story. … So I haven't really dabbled in that puddle yet. [10:35] CA: And have you ever written about siblings? PD: Yeah, most of my books have siblings in them. … [12:00] CA: Do you ever spook yourself when you're writing? PD: Oh yeah. …. I found portions of Blackwells and the Briny Deep really spooky. … I've been a sailor all my life. … Writing this scene in Blackwell's where the twins are at the tiller and their brother gets swept overboard -- that actually happened to me. So that was scary to write. … I had a child read Blackwells … and she read it and had no problem with it…. If you scare yourself, you probably need to check the scene… and get someone else to read it. [14:00] CA: Did you tell stories around a campfire as a kid or anything like that? PD: I didn't. I was probably the kid that was writing stories around the campfire, but it was all in my head. …. But my dad … and I would tell stories a lot. … That's an important part of being a writer, I think, is having someone that shares stories with you. [14:55] CA: And do you have a favorite scary story or movie? PD: My favorite kids' story, I think, would be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaimon…. And I think my favourite scary movie is Jaws…. It still spooks me when I see it. … What could be more scary than being at sea with a monster?... [15:45] CA: And what do you think is scarier: humans or monsters? PD: I think that you have to have both. …. Humans are scary because you can just detect the monster below the surface, and monsters are scary because -- or fascinating because -- there is just a touch of humanity in them. … I'm scared by humans and monsters. [16:25] CA: Do you have a favorite setting from your own fiction or from a favorite book? PD: I really liked writing the two different settings in Oculum… probably the world under the dome would be my favorite setting in my own books. And other books, I mentioned The Graveyard Book before … the setting of a graveyard to raise a child in, being raised by ghosts…. [17:10] CA: Did you do any worldbuilding exercises when you were creating Oculum? PD: Yes. …That's what I do in my journals is… spend a lot of time trying to illustrate some of the characters or some of the world. For me it sort of unlocks a way to write more about it or more accurately…. [17:40] CA: Tell me about your upcoming book. PD: So Firefly is coming in February 2021, and it's set in a costume warehouse in Toronto. It's got 7 million pieces in it. And it's a story about a girl who's had a pretty rough life, and her aunt takes her into this warehouse… And how really we all wear different costumes, and the story is about finding the right one, finding the right fit.... CA: And so that was inspired by a real place. PD: Yeah. It's actually based on a family business. … They specialize in period clothing …. She … was costume designer to 10,000 movies in her life… It seemed like such a beautiful place to tell a story. [18:55] CA: And do you have any favorite fictional characters? PD: …. I really love Elizabeth Bennett. I think she's a great female protagonist. … my favorite villain is probably Milton's Lucifer…. [20:00] Philippa Dowding introduces herself PD: I'm Philippa Dowding. And I'm a children's author. And I'm a poet and I'm a musician and I'm also a copywriter. And I like to sail. I like to walk my dog every day. And I live in downtown Toronto with my family. I can see the CN Tower from my backyard. And here's something that I don't tell many people, but my very favorite ice cream is Tom & Jerry's Cherry Garcia. That's the only ice cream that anyone ever needs. [20:55] Find out more about Philippa Dowding You can hear more advice from Philippa Dowding on Cabin Tales Episode 3, “Spooky Stories are all Around Us,” about getting ideas, on Episode 4.5, “Author Interviews about Plotting,” and on Episode 8, “The Never-ending story,” about Revision. We love Jon Tye here at Ransom Note Towers, in all his many guises. Last time we spoke to him was for a wonderful Label Love piece on the 20th anniversary of his Lo Recordings imprint. This year he's been busy as always, releasing the 'Peaks' album under his Brain Machine moniker with Guido Zen and Kyle Martin, as well as blessing us with 'Escape Hatch', the fourth Seahawks album. Jon has been so kind as to make us a mix of original material, so every track is either produced or co-produced by himself. With material from Seahawks, Brain Machine, Cherry Garcia and Pink Fluid nestled within, we feel pretty sure you're gonna enjoy it as much as us.
